For new visitors to this thread, the Model S Owner's Manual thread/discussion may be found here.
---------------------- now for the regularly scheduled discussion:
I thought it might be interesting to start compiling an FAQ for the Model S.
Is there one of the Roadster maintained by one of the TMC members? I figure it might make a good starting template.

brianman It looks like Tesla Motors Club - Enthusiasts & Owners Forum FAQ should be targeted to the Roadster forum with a new link created for the Model S forum.
I'm curious how the editing of the FAQ works vs. regular posts. Is it limited to moderators?
Perhaps one of the mods can chime in.
Jul 1, 2012
Andrew Wolfe That FAQ is great - but it is for noobs. We need a FAQ for owners to handle the myriad details of owning the car.
What is the safe way to tow the car?
Where can I get a NEMA 14/50 extension cord?
What is the best way to sync music with the hard drive?
Does anyone have a speed/range chart?
etc.
Jul 1, 2012
jerry33 FAQs are supposed to be for noobs. Their main purpose is to reduce the number of repetitive beginner questions. New owners certainly need this information but clogging up the form with them is not the correct way to deal with them.
The details of owning a ground-breaking car aren't likely to be known until a number of people have had some serious time with the vehicle (I'd suggest about two years to get 80% of nuances down). As common questions are answered, they can be added to the FAQ.
The speed range chart is here
Jul 1, 2012
AndyM The trouble is, there's different levels of "noob-itude". On one level, you get the "Did you say 'regence'? oh, 'regen'! What's that?"*, and on the other you'll get "Why doesn't the Model S support CHAdeMO or 3-phase charging?" Both are frequently asked.
A good FAQ is organized well - with hyperlinks at the top so viewers of all levels of "noob-ness" can navigate quickly to their area of need.
* I heard this myself from a guest of a reservation holder at the Oct 1 factory tour. And they got to ride in the front seat with the Tesla pilot. (grumble). Noobs come in all flavors.

bonnie I brought this to the other mods for discussion. If one of you wants to start an FAQ for the Model S, then that would be great. But it feels a little too early right now - only a few cars have been delivered - and as I said to Brianman in a pm, we should at least have an owner's manual released so that we have some real facts. (My personal opinion is that noobs should be willing to at least read everything on the Tesla Motors Model S section and actually learn about the car they're buying or thinking of buying. I'm not real fond of spoon-feeding. )
We really need to get a wiki feature installed to do this type of thing justice. Then the community could help fill it out and maintain it. But, like all of you, we have lives, too, that includes work, family, community. So wiki-capability is 'on the list', but perhaps not as soon as you would all like. And again, if one of you wants to step up and get it going, I'll help you out.
Jul 2, 2012
AndyM Thanks, Bonnie!
I've started collecting the bits of Model S lore - some known, some speculative - and trying to organize them in a Google Docs spreadsheet. I would love to find the "right" spot to land them in when enough are collected.
Anyone who's willing to help compile/edit, please send me a private message.

mikevbf Model S FAQ -- Brainstorm
I think the faq should include a couple of highlights from TM's site with a link to it, but mostly contain information beyond what is on TM's site. Instead of organizing the information at first lets just try and dump it all here. I volunteer to organize all the info in what will hopefully become a separate sticky faq thread. If someone else has also started compiling the information, please feel free to step up and take over. I just want to get it started because it is something long over due given the incredible amount of repetition in any forum this active.

Aug 6, 2012
mikevbf I've had a chance to glance at AndyM's spreadsheet. One of the nice features of it is it has column for status with open or verified as the options. This helps us proceed with what Robert Boston has pointed out the ratio of questions to answers being skewed towards the former. The way I envision the FAQ is as something dynamic that changes as our questions and answers change. Bonnie is probably right that a wiki function is probably best way to handle this. In the meantime efforts such as AndyM's spreadsheet and some brain storming here is a great way to start.
Upon further reflection, a slightly more focussed approach might help here on this thread. Maybe we should start with a top 10 questions we as a community have and up to 5 questions you personally might have if they are different. If you know the answer to the questions feel free to provide the answer as well with preferably a source listed ie a link or talked to sales person.
Aug 6, 2012
mikevbf For example: I do not think one of our top questions is what the general dimensions of the Model S is. Most of us know we can over to TM's site very quickly and get that. On the other hand one of our top questions might be the change in the dimensions in the back seat head room with and without the pano option or just more generally how of much a difference having the pano roof has for the back seat drivers. One of my top 5 personal questions is how difficult it is to drive with the air suspension up for times over 30 seconds at the required slow speeds.
For the first question there is a whole thread related to it here
Panoramic sunroof
As far as I know for the air suspension question is specs for speeds limits which the various levels work at and reps telling us it will work at those speeds. I would love it if someone could point me to test drive where someone actually tested beyond raising it for a second to go over a bump or sat in one place raising and lowering it.
As a side note: this, however, is not a place to go off on long tangents theorizing answers, but more a place to concisely state or point to an answer. The more extended conversation on a single topic are for threads dedicated to that topic. Please help us mods by moving extended conversations not about building an FAQ to their appropriate threads.

Aug 6, 2012
AndyM I'll have to do some editing onthe sheet, and some more testing. The one file I tried with multi-channel FLAC encoding did not sound "right" in the Model S. But the multichannel WAV did sound OK.

Aug 6, 2012
mikevbf Ok I will take a stab at what I believe are the 10 most commonly asked questions in this community:
1) When am I going to get my Model S?
2) What color should I get?
3) What type of internal driver/passenger storage options will there be?
4) What is the status on fit and finish?
5) How robust will the battery be over the long haul?
6) How is the audio in the standard and upgraded systems?
7) All sorts of console tech questions (please someone help me be more specific)?
8) Range related questions such as how cold and hot weather effect it, normal mode vs extended range mode, etc?
9) Where are they going to put the Super Charge Stations?
10) Charger and adapter questions (need help here too)?
11) Which wheels/tires to get for winter and bad road conditions.
I couldn't resist going to 11. After all the volume goes to 11. What do you think are the most common questions?

Sorry for my delay in responding to your tire pricing question. Tesla Motors just released the information on tire pricing last week, shortly after we spoke. Here is all of the information that I have on tire pricing:
19 Winter Wheel/Tire Package with Pirelli Winter Tires
o $2400
19 Winter Studded Wheel/Tire Package with Nokian studded winter tires
o $2800
 19 Wheel Package -- set of 4 19 wheels
o $1000
 19 Wheel (single)
o $275
21 Wheel/Tire Package -- set of 4 21 Silver Wheels with Performance Tires
o $5,200
 21 Wheel (single)
o $950

aviators99 Suspension question:

Aug 6, 2012
brianman I don't know if the January information is still valid or not.

Aug 6, 2012
aviators99 I'm confused, because on this page: Model S Specs and Standard Features | Tesla Motors
It shows the 6" "ground clearance" specifically pointing to the rear of the vehicle, at the point where it is the *highest*. Is that an error in the diagram, or is this not really the ground clearance?
Aug 7, 2012
brianman To my eye, the Specs page is showing the low point of the clearance (the battery) rather than the high point (rear). Note the gap between the top of the "I" and the rear end of the vehicle.
Aug 10, 2012
raptorweb I asked about this today when my rep called and they do include the TPMS sensors. Also over the phone I was told 2300 for all seasons, rims, and TPMS.
I haven't check to see if it has been added but I also was told the price of an extra UMC with 14-50 will be $500

Had a couple more questions:
Has anyone tested running the car while charging (Like for A/C here in Florida Summer)?
Does the DC outlet still work when the car is off? Just while key fob is in range?
Is the key fob water proof or at least water resistant?
I asked these at Santana Row and they did not have final production answers 6/21
Aug 11, 2012
teslasguy Does anyone know if the S has any 120 volt AC outlets? My Sienna has two and we use them a lot to charge laptop, etc from while driving.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Aug 11, 2012
Robert.Boston No, it does not. Many devices can be charged directly from the USB, which are high-power ports. I have a charger for laptops that plugs into a standard car 12v outlet. It's really a little silly to charge devices from an AC plug, which requires the car's native DC power to be converted to AC and then back to DC.
Aug 11, 2012
teslasguy I wasn't just referring to charging stuff. One of the things I was looking forward to was actually running 120 volt stuff from my 85kw battery. For example I have a 20" stand fan I'd love to be able to run from the S at my grandsons baseball games. Would be neat (and unique) to have a nice breeze blowing thru the ezup tent from my S!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Aug 11, 2012
dmetcalf Do you know ifthese ports are active even when the car is unoccupied?
Aug 11, 2012
AndyM Good Q's. I've added them into the FAQ list.
I suspect the answer to the DC outlet question is "yes." The key being in the car only affects driving functions. The car is always "on." I have seen the displays go to sleep if there is no one sitting in the driver's seat. Unless you tell the car to power off completely, I suspect that the DC outlet will be ready to go. Then again, it's all software controllable, I'm sure, so it could be anything. I'll let you know in December.

mulder1231 Update on the "When can we get the Sunset Red" question:
I was told at the Palo Alto event: mid 2013. Reason is that there are 10 paint setups in the factory--one for each color. Sunset red is the 11th color and will take the place of signature red once all sigs have been produced (incl. international).
Edit: must have misunderstood, as there are only 9 colors in production currently. So the correct statement is:
Sunset red is the 10th color, and will replace the signature red paint setup once all signature red orders, incl. international, have been built, likely mid to late 2013.
Aug 12, 2012
Lyon That makes sense, unfortunately it means that "2013" probably means "late 2013." I don't expect international signature deliveries to be concluded until Mid 2013.
Aug 12, 2012
Zorba Does that mean the radio or whatever will not work when I leave the car, with someone sitting in the passenger seat?
Aug 12, 2012
mulder1231 I posted some pics of the Sunset Red with solid black roof here. It's gorgeous, almost worth the wait.
Aug 12, 2012
AndyM Correct, and confirmed. When I did my testing in late July in VIN #50, I was sitting in the passenger seat. When the driver wasn't there, I had to put my hand down on the driver's seat to keep testing and music going. There's a timeout after the driver leaves the car, and when the door is closed after the driver leaves the timer is stopped. The displays turn off and the music stops. This might be configurable, but I don't recall seeing the option on the screens.
Aug 12, 2012
Todd Burch If playing music while outside the car is not currently possible, it will almost certainly come in a software update in the near future. It's just too common a situation to overlook:
-Playing music while working in the garage.
-Playing music while washing the car.
-Playing music at a barbecue in the park.
-Spouse sitting in the passenger seat wants to continue listening after the driver parks and goes inside to grab something from the store.
I tend to think it can already be done--we just haven't read the manual yet.
Aug 12, 2012
AndyM This is very true of a good chunk of the "faqs" in the FAQ. And a strong reason why Tesla is tight-lipped about confirming very many things so early in the game.
I try to make an effort to write down which car it was I confirm things on, because they are getting older and older every day.
Aug 12, 2012
Zorba Thanks for the confirmation AndyM, but I'm sure it will change with further updates.
Aug 13, 2012

jomo25 So, I want to make sure I understand. Currently, in my Volt, which has the keyless entry/pushbutton starter, if I'm in the driver's seat and my wife in passenger seat, and she has her key in her purse with her, and I can park, go into a convenience store (my key in my pocket), with her and the kid still in the car running with AC.
Are you saying everything will stop stop once I leave the car, even though she's still in there with her key in the S? That would suck, esp in AZ summers.
Aug 17, 2012
J in MN Just send her into the store.
Aug 17, 2012
RichSh Definitely send her into the store, otherwise she'll be in the drivers seat when you get back. Especially if everything stops.
Aug 17, 2012
ModelS1079 Dude, you leave your Tesla with the key in it at the Gas Station, and I'll be in the driver's seat next to your wife before you get back. Ha!
Aug 17, 2012
jomo25 Um, she can lock the doors til I get back. And it wouldnt be at a gas station since I wouldn't need gas.
Anyways, it's a hypothetical. The point is, if the car's accessories (music, AC) will stop when the driver's seat is vacated, even with a second person in the car, with their key fob, that is unlike the behavior of every other remote key-based vehicle and will lead to inconveniences in some situations.

ChrisHenryOC Can we pull performance & charging data from the computer?
I was reading through the Roadster forums to learn about Tesla EV driving in general, and found a thread about people pulling data from their Roadster by plugging in a USB memory stick, then analyzing the data on their home computer. As a data guy IRL, this sounds really cool.

dmetcalf If you leave the car and the passenger touches the screen, everything-A/C, radio, web, nav all come back on and stay on for quite some time. Longer than the 15 min in my experience, but I did come back near the car a couple times so it might be 15 min but reset when the fob is back n proximity. Hard to tell, but practical use has been good. All functions can be run while charging whether in the car or near it. Hope this helps.
- - - Updated - - -
Key fob is not waterproof or resistant. Plastic bags and no beach solution like a valet key available.

Mr X Sorry to bring it up but how many Tesla fires have there been exactly? Just want a total number
I mentioned Tesla with the owner of the store I work at yesterday when we were simply discussing cars and he immediately spoke with contempt about tesla and the first thing he said was those cars are always catching on fire they are no good. So i calmy started to explain to him the about the fires amongst 3 other co-workers and he clearly didn't expect me to have the knowledge i had and I felt he started to see me as condescending when i was simply explaining what really happened.
And then after a few minutes he said "get this guy away from me" Lol.
It's always unfortunate when people that have minconstrued thoughts are against listening to you because they simply do not understand what you are saying to them. I wasn't even attacking him, i was smiling and was very respectful but he was getting uncomfortable and walked away from me when i was talking which was kind of rude.
Aug 29, 2014
JPP I think maybe we are up to 4....2 pack fires from debris puncturing the underside (now less likely after titanium shielding added), 1 in Mexico from someone driving 100+MPH through a concrete wall, 1 in LA when perp stole an S and drove 100+MPH through city streets before destroying the S and dying as he was ejected through the windshield (Darwin award). Haven't heard of any others.
And, BTW, how many ICE car fires are reported to authorities in the USA every day...close to 100. How many people died in the USA last year in a car fire...almost 1 a day.
Aug 29, 2014
Mr X
Thanks. I told him there have only been a few fires as i wasn't sure the correct number and i explained to him that they were high speed impacts/unlikely occurrences and were not spontaneous and also mentioned each one, the high speed impact in mexico (in which the driver lived), the tow hitch, etc. And then how Tesla created a special underbody shield which is offered as a free upgrade also how it has the highest safest rating out of any car.
He said that the percentage of Tesla's that have caught on fire is higher than any other car and i mentioned about how many gas cars catch on fire everyday and he said "that is not true, hundreds of gas cars dont catch on fire everyday"
My co-workers were there and the guy that hired me took the store owners side intentionally as if i was attacking him which i was not asking me if "i was serious" when i was talking and i was like Yes? All i did was explain what happened, that was all. Clearly they don't want to be enlightened and thats too bad.
