So cool! They're right, you really don't get a sense of scale on the presses unless you're standing next to them. It's impressive. How they managed to move some of those from Detroit to Fremont, CA is beyond me.
  • May 29, 2012
    ibcs
If I remember right, one of the large presses was from Saturn and it came from Georgia. They had to disassemble parts to be able to make the journey. So neat to see it all coming together.

I love the last part. Looks like they are going to announce something cool. I guess it's a network of fast charging stations
  • May 29, 2012
    AnOutsider
Yeah, the train tracks actually ran up to the factory. IIRC, they had to lower the floor of the factory to get the behemoths in there. The only ":(" part of this post for me was that it said you'd get your email approximately 4 months prior to delivery. It was 3 months previously, and most were hoping for sooner than that. Boo indeed.

It's most likely just related to the increasing numbers as Tesla ramps up production and won't impact the actual delivery dates. You'll be getting your mail pretty soon.
  • May 29, 2012

Maybe the difference between 4 and 3 months is just the 30 days (or so) you have to decide, after receiving the email.

The video could pass off as a movie trailer for Transformers 4 ;) Great production values!

Thanks, GeorgeB; looking forward to next Tuesday already!

I liked how light the panels appear based on how they are picked up by the workers at the end.
  • May 29, 2012

My favorite part is that a single man is picking up a completed door frame without trouble. Try that with any other car door and you will be struggling.

Well, its only a aluminum sheet after all. The rest will be added in a later stage.

Dramatic music like the cold weather testing video. This one sounded like a Batman soundtrack. Is this going to be the next batmobile. ;)

    Very nice video!
Glad Tesla is giving us an inside look at the factory. As each day passes by I'm happier I put my deposit in. Wish I did it sooner.
Now I've got to try and prevent myself to committing to even more that I can't afford as far as options go.

  • May 30, 2012

Watching the Video, I want to ask someone: How many individual metal stampings are necessary to construct 1 model S? Did anyone ask this at the Fremont event and Factory Tour?
  • May 30, 2012
    gg_got_a_tesla
    Isn't it 11?

    - 4 doors
    - 2 front quarter-panels
    - 2 rear quarter-panels
    - hood
    - rear lift-gate
    - roof
  • May 30, 2012
    dsm363
No, I think it's the car that goes to 11:smile:
  • May 30, 2012

plus a bunch of stampings for frame.
  • May 30, 2012

+whatever for the underbody, wheel wells, so forth.
  • May 30, 2012

The amazing part to me is that it appears QUIET, like the cars.

While there was considerable mood music, the workers were not wearing ear protection so it must be.

I expected stamping to be noisy enough to be heard in SF.
  • May 30, 2012

The gallery photos have a picture of the dies which each seem to have numbers on them as well as several rows of dies sitting.

Inside Tesla 5/29/2012 - Stamping Line | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

In the photo you can see a numbers 22, 23, 24, 25 and 51. Does necessarily mean there are 51 dies but I would expect somewhere around that number.

It wasn't at all noisy during the factory event. They weren't pressing any metal but all the machines were running.
  • May 30, 2012
    Jaff
Are you referring to the force of the stampings Eric?

"Our state-of-the-art Kuka robots move aluminum blanks into the press, and then, using over one thousand tons of force, the blank is formed, trimmed and pierced. Its very impressive to watch as flat aluminum blanks go in one side and shaped, paint-ready panels come out the other."

  • May 30, 2012
    Lloyd
One thousand Tons is correct. These machines were made to stamp steel parts. The aluminum is a piece of cake for this and really overkill.
  • May 30, 2012

I'm pretty sure many/most/all of the structural components (i.e. the frame of the car) are also stamped, and who knows how many of those there are. Plus you have things like the floor of the trunk and frunk, the firewall (if they call it that on the Model S), etc.
  • May 30, 2012
    drbradfo
I do wonder what they call it. frunk wall?
  • May 30, 2012
    Beaker
During the tour our guide told our group that it takes more than one press to form a completed part. in the Video you can see that there are multiple places for stamping in in just the stamper which was shown, even though we only get to see one of the presses in action.

Tesla had a poster showing the number of metal stampings needed to construct the model S. Fortuitously, someone snapped a photo of that poster and thou a bit blurry, the total count appears to be 83!

I count 74 from the poster, but it is a little fuzzy.
  • May 31, 2012
    ElSupreme
    It looks like 22 + 38 + 19 + 4 = 83.

22 - Schuler Press line - Outer Sheet metal
    38 - 3A Press line - Body Structure
    19 - 4D Press line - Smaller Body Structure
4 - 1B Press line - High strength STEEL Body Structure

The steel looks like the 'B' pillars this is sort of fuzzy.

    So deliveries have started!!

I'm assuming the first one is Jurvetson's followed by Elon's. I was expecting these to be the first two to be delivered on 6/22 as part of the Founders' series, maybe they will be delivering a few Special Sigs that day?

It's not called Muir Red anymore. It's "Sunset Red" as per the Options page and is still slated for 2013.

If the paint shop can paint it already, not sure why Tesla's holding it back till next year; to preserve Sig Red's exclusivity for a few months?!

After looking at way too many Blue Priuses on the road and several not-so-great-looking Green BMW 5s and 3s not to mention Green VWs and Camrys, still considering Sunset Red if Tesla can make it available by January...

Might have already been mentioned, but I just noticed that that count down is now for a more sensible 3:30 pm PDT instead of midnight.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    AnOutsider
Yes, and oddly, it also goes to 3:30 EST. Guessing their code doesn't localize -- or it does and it's not realizing the target is 3:30 PST and adjusting for the local time.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    JRod0802
The blog says "3:30 p.m. PST". Do you think he meant PDT? I'm betting he did, since California is in Daylight Savings Time right now, and a lot of people don't know how to denote Daylight Savings Time. I just wanted to make sure...
  • Jun 19, 2012
    Zextraterrestrial
Stoopid 'savings' can't we just get rid of it and switch to metric too while were at it?

  • Jun 19, 2012

Same issue here in CDT. The countdown code must only be calculating from a static 3:30PM without factoring in time zone differences.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    ElSupreme
It is Daylight Saving Time. No 'S'!

And yes many many people mess up PDT/PST.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    doug
That's odd since a countdown is an absolute thing (e.g., "5 hours from now" is five hours from now, independent of timezone). The code shouldn't need to be localized. They must be using the system clock.

Edited to add: Just confirmed the count down changed by simply adjusting the clock on my laptop and reloading the page.
  • Jun 19, 2012
    jomo25
[JOKE]Wow, I hope the software on the car is designed and coded better than their web page countdown![/JOKE]

  • Jun 19, 2012

Oh, but I hope it is the same. That way you could bring up your battery to 100% just by driving into a different time zone. Right? totaltgalen.gif
  • Jun 19, 2012
    AnOutsider
I've run into this myself. The solution I came up with is to have a target countdown date (a unix timestamp) then to also have a variable stating the current server time (inserted into the code via whatever they use, likely PHP). Then the Javascript can do a diff on the machine's date and the date of the server (which is likely the same timezone of the target countdown date). This way it can use that difference to offset the countdown forward or backward as needed.

    TM if you're reading, you're welcome :)

In the power industry, you'll often see "EPT" "CPT" "MPT" and "PPT" -- where the middle "P" is "Prevailing". This notation lets you write market rules that say "offers must be submitted by 10:00 EPT" with zero ambiguity about the time intended.

  • Jun 20, 2012
    ckessel
Sort of off topic now on the counter, but I'm not sure why they'd screw with dates at all in the countdown timer. Just send across the number of seconds left until launch, a number that has no time zone dependency, and let the Javascript/Html5 widget convert it to days/minutes/seconds and count down.

Academic anyway, the event is close enough it's probably not worth them spending time to fix and deploy a new web page for something that trivial.

Very cool. 50 cars produced, and there will be 50 more in the next 2-3 weeks. Thats averaging 50/15 = 3.3 cars per day, possibly 50/10 = 5 cars per day. So they are basically doubling the rate. If they are producing fewer than that rate now, the rate at the end would have to be higher than what I stated. They could easily be at 5 cars per day in two weeks. And they plan on boosting it up at 2-3 week intervals. 39,000 total miles driven. Looking forward to the next update.
