Hotwheels Model S part 1

  • Apr 21, 2015
    TMS doc
My source at Mattel tells me the Model S for Hotwheels is on its way. Look for perhaps two versions in the collection to be released in 2015. Also, there is also a Model S Matchbox coming as well, presumably to appear more as a stock version. Phil Stillman, your petition may have paid off.

I still have my HotWheels Roadster in it's original box hanging up in my office cube from 2008. The model S, and owning a Tesla, was just a dream at that point. Sometimes, if your lucky, dreams do come true!

I didn't know either... looked it up on Wiki and found this:

I'm hoping its just shadow or something... but it looks like the one in packaging has a huge pronounced rear spoiler?

Little more info for people looking to find it, based on the package I was able to find this wiki site

    Toy#: CFH03
Col#: 217 (also noted on the packaging)
Series: Garage (seems to be interchangeable with "Workshop")

On the official site, you can see a few of the cars from the wiki set listed in the Workshop collection online (such as the Crate 8 or the 2014 Stingray): 2015 Workshop Series Toy Car Collection | Diecast Race Cars & Trucks | Hot Wheels
But the Tesla is not listed :(

Franchised dealers are not allowed to carry them, but you can go to the website and place a $5.00 refundable deposit for a reservation #.
Also there's showrooms at select retail locations where you can schedule a test-play.
  • Apr 30, 2015
    mmh
After I put down the deposit, how long until it goes into production? And when can I expect the delivery specialist to contact me?
  • Apr 30, 2015
    EchoDelta
I think there's a forum full of crazy folks going bananas until their delivery dates, excitedly configuring their options online and doing extrapolations of their reservation numbers in hopes to predict when they get theirs delivered. As soon as they get them however, HotWheels releases another model with even hotter wheels, so the fun cycle continues.

    - - - Updated - - -

I found this link to order them: http://is.gd/hotwheels_TeslaModelS

Yikes, based on the looks of that nosecone and spoiler, I'll be waiting for the Matchbox instead. If only Maisto or Bburago or one of those would make a nice 1:18 or 1:43 Diecast model, with serious details. Or better yet, AutoArt.

Darn you Bonnie. Brianman spent over 14 hours over 3 days driving to every toy store and Walmart the nav could find looking for a Hot Wheels version just about a week ago. (He even got forced to take a ferry against his will, but that's another story). I thought I might have a chance to spend some time with him this weekend, but when he sees this he'll just want to do that trip all over again looking for the Match Box version. (Which I agree is way cooler!)

Actually, since his Sig Model S is red and his P85D is silver, I bet he'll drive to the ends of the earth to be sure he gets one of each! You for one know first hand he never drops an idea once it's in his head.

Except you can't find them anywhere.

The Hot Wheels and Matchbox "dealers" (aka Walmart, Toys R Us) offer a horrible experience compared to the direct-from-manufacturer purchase model used by Tesla Motors.

It's trivial for me to order 10 actual vehicles directly from Tesla. It's been frankly impossible to just find a single Hot Wheels or Matchbox variant at every Walmart within 100 miles of me (and some Toys R Us, Fred Meyer, Target ...).

I suspect many of us will bring whatever we can find in stores to TMC Connect. :) Though Hotwheels/Matchbox are the only things that have consistently gotten my backpack searched by TSA, so anyone flying in might keep that in mind. In fairness, the reactions upon digging out the little hunks of suspect metal are usually totally worth it!

Mattel policy has always been not to sell individual models of the basic Hotwheels/Matchbox. But in the days of Roadster Hotwheels, Tesla was able to buy cases of them for the stores to carry- I in turn purchased a total of several cases from my local store and gave them away to kids and EV fans for years. I imagine similar arrangements could be made with the new ones.

The Hot Wheels version is easy to find. I've looked in 4-5 stores around NYC and that one always seems to be in stock. Even at $1.09 I didn't want the stylized version.

On the other hand the 1:18 Model S from the Tesla site was worth every one of its 21,000 pennies. It's awesome and pretty much everyone who stopped in my office today made compliments. My CEO had so many questions I think he's almost ready to ditch his Jag and order a P90D.

I'm embarrassed to say how much time I've spent looking through through Matchbox racks in a fruitless effort to find the red one. Finally broke down & bought a couple from a Buy It Now listing on eBay last Saturday. Think it was $9.49 each plus a couple/three bucks for shipping.

What's the difference between the hot wheels short card vs the normal packaging? I've never seen a short card one at the stores near me.

The hot wheels paint jobs for the Tesla isn't all that appealing to me. Matchbox is way better but the retailers carrying matchbox cars have tiny selections in the stores. I'd buy so many of them if they were in stock for the normal price.

Afaik, the short cards are used in Europe, while the long ones are for the US market (probably to fit all the warnings and disclaimers on the back of the card  ) But I'm not a Hotwheels collector / expert, so maybe there is a completely different explanation.

Btw, I also saw the red version on long cards, and the silver version on short cards.

Well since I was out in Missouri visiting my sister we happened to be in a WalMart and thought, hey I should look and see if I can find some, since noone out here where I am even knows what a Tesla is nevermind trying to go find the Matchbox/HotWheels of them.

Well we found a bunch and this has started a scavenger hunt from store to store looking for these now. Been to all the WalMarts, Dollar General, KMarts, and any other store that might have a toy section with possible cars and we have cleaned them out.
