Stoneymonster Sigh, she claims she pushed the brake and it accelerated. The mantra of those who crash into solid, non moving objects the world over.
Mar 29, 2013
carrerascott Elon has the data.
I do notice that my foot hits the gas and brake more often in the S than other cars. I've had to move my seat back a bit more to keep that from happening. But I never get acceleration from it, just a warning from the Tesla. Sounds like she hit the wrong pedal.

Mar 29, 2013
yobigd20 I'm probably going to get reemed for this, but a 71 year old lady driving a brand new Tesla Model S? Really? Probably doesn't' even know that it doesn't run on gas, blind as a bat, clearly can't even tell the difference between the "gas pedal" and the brake, and probably had no idea how to put the car in "park". Maybe it might have helped if she turned creep mode off...that is if she could even figure out how to use the console, let alone read and understand all of it.
Mar 29, 2013
carrerascott Not going to ream you, it all depends on the 71 year old. My parents are 73 & 76. Own luxury cars and drive them fine (Lexus & Mercedes). Why not buy an electric car before their time is up? The car isn't hard to drive. This happens with ICE cars often, sometimes ending with disaster. At least this had no injuries/fatalities. This could have easily have happened to a 17 year old or a 35 year old.

Mar 29, 2013
Banahogg Pedal misapplication/confusion is a very real issue (happened to one of my older relatives). With a car as powerful as the Model S, there's really no hope of recovery once you've stomped on the gas thinking it's the break.
Personally, I think that part of the problem is the design of the interface itself, but that's a bit off-topic...

Mar 29, 2013
yobigd20 Ok, I'll admit that shouldn't really be a blanket statement then. I really hope 71 is the new 51. I'm talking from personal POV, where both my grandparents were blind as a bat at 70, and the fenders on their cars were soooo scraped and dinged up from hitting things...god knows how many cars they actually scraped every time they parked...and I'm 100% sure they never knew they even hit other cars when parking either.

SCW-Greg I'm not sure I buy this photo. The impact force on the nose cone and front end - to break through some wall structure, studs, possible foundation straps, etc. should cause more deformation of the car... don't you think?
I always check reflections too, light angles, etc, to check for consistency, which otherwise looks legit.
Edit: Yeah, the more I look at this, the less I believe it. Bushes outside where the cabin of the car should be, reflections on the hood and left side front, don't appear to match the inside surroundings.
Instagram effects conveniently mask other nuances.
Just sayin.

Todd Burch "She said she put her foot on the brake and the car jumped forward."
For this to happen, she must have really pushed down on that pedal. Why can't people just admit they pressed the wrong pedal instead of just claiming that the car magically did something completely different than what was commanded?
Sigh. Shouldn't need more than a light tap of the brakes in a parking stall anyway. Back to driving school for her.

SCW-Greg Steve, my bad. The photo just didn't seem to add up. Interesting too that the two inside shots (one through the outside window looking in, didn't seem to match the wall conditions of the one taken from inside.

Mar 30, 2013
mhpr262 I presume the woman was trying to back out of the parking space. That sort of thing seems to happen often when elderly drivers attempt to drive backwards. Looking back over their shoulders messes up their coordination, they confuse the pedals and instead of easing off the accelerator and hitting the brake they just mash the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor in their panic.
Exactly the same thing happened to my grandmother (or maybe I should say she did the same thing, it is not something that maghically "happens" to one). she backed out of her parking space at the supermarket, hit the gas and backed full throttle into another car. Thankfully she was only driving a 45hp compact car ...

wycolo 1. Public buildings need protective posts to keep cars off sidewalk & out of the buildings. Why is this not an insurance requirement?
2. Case in point for TM removing that Nanny Gong whenever we apply both pedals at the same time. With an 'automatic' car one should ALWAYS have both feet on respective pedals when negotiating in close quarters. Especially negotiating in close proximity to pedestrian traffic.

GSP "For this to happen, she must have really pushed down on that pedal. Why can't people just admit they pressed the wrong pedal instead of just claiming that the car magically did something completely different than what was commanded?"
This is simple. They really think they are on the brake. They press harder when the car starts to accelerate. It is over before they can realise what is happening. Afterward, they think it was the car, since they are sure they were pressing on the brake pedal.
This has been an issue for decades. See the 60-minutes episode from the 1980's about the woman who killed her son with her Audi 5000. Very sad.
GSP
Mar 30, 2013
yobigd20 I actually have never used Instagram, so I wouldn't know. But what about all the other picture differences between the two? So if Instragram touches up the photos, that could definitely explain the color difference, and that it makes the car look white. Theres still a lot of debris differences though.
- - - Updated - - -
Uh...say whaaaaatt? BOTH feet on respective pedals?? Are you kidding? Fail drivers ed 101. I'm glad I never have to get in a car with you....seems like a recipe for disaster. I'd say you're more likely to get in an accident than anyone else that uses 1 foot. And you probably have destroyed more brakes than anyone else too.
- - - Updated - - -
hah, and she drives off....classic.
Mar 30, 2013
wycolo > BOTH feet on respective pedals [yobigd20]
Added another 'negotiating' to my post for clarity. N.b. negotiating means 'not yet underway', as in pulling into or out of slots, or parallel parking, or turning around on a narrow crowned muddy road. Anywhere you don't completely trust your sightlines, mirrors or rear camera. Left hemisphere of brain = STOP. Right hemisphere of brain = GO. No slack in brakes because you are purposely slightly dragging. No slack on accel pedal since you are constantly applying creep as a minimum. Add right hand doing D > R > D and you now have complete synergy.
As opposed to raising foot off floor and stabbing at a pedal, any pedal, whatever. With the results we see here and elsewhere on a regular basis, unfortunately. But fully sanctioned by the 'driver's ed' industry. :frown:

jerry33 While getting used to one pedal driving, after allowing the regen to brake to 4 mph, I pressed the gas and wondered why the car wasn't stopping at the light. I didn't press very hard so it only went a couple of feet before I realized that I hit the wrong pedal. Now that I'm aware of this, it's not a problem, but that first time was "Wow, pedal confusion happened to me".

Thumper As mentioned, not all drivers are equal. Paul Newman was still racing successfully at 70! Per Wikipedia:
Newman was an avid auto racing enthusiast, and first became interested in motorsports ("the first thing that I ever found I had any grace in") while training at the Watkins Glen Racing School for the filming of Winning, a 1969 film. Because of his love and passion for racing, Newman agreed in 1971 to star in and to host his first television special, Once Upon a Wheel, on the history of auto racing. It was produced and directed by David Winters, who co-owned a number of racing cars with Newman.[41][42] Newman's first professional event as a racer was in 1972, in Thompson, Connecticut, and he was a frequent competitor in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events for the rest of the decade, eventually winning four national championships. He later drove in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans in Dick Barbour's Porsche 935 and finished in second place.[43] Newman reunited with Barbour in 2000 to compete in the Petit Le Mans.[44]
24 Hours of Le Mans career
Participating years 1979
Teams Dick Barbour Racing
Best finish 2nd (1979)
Class wins 1 (1979)
From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, he drove for the Bob Sharp Racing team, racing mainly Datsuns (later rebranded as Nissans) in the Trans-Am Series. He became closely associated with the brand during the 1980s, even appearing in commercials for them. At the age of 70 years and 8 days, he became the oldest driver to be part of a winning team in a major sanctioned race,[45] winning in his class at the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona.[46] Among his last races were the Baja 1000 in 2004 and the 24 Hours of Daytona once again in 2005.[47]
Agree with wycolo, always drive with left foot braking in non-stick cars. It improves reaction time and minimizes chance you will hit the wrong pedal.
Mar 30, 2013
digitaltim I was recently driving in a pair of flip flops that I had not worn before in the car. I accidentally hit both pedals and they were fighting each other. I ended up pressing harder because I was attempting to stop for a red light - that made the car lurch forward a bit more.

Mar 30, 2013
mitch672 I don't have much to say about the incident, it can happen to anyone. My mom was driving right up until she became ill at 72 with Pancreatic Cancer, in fact she had just bought a new 2010 Camry 2 months before she was diagnosed. My dad, well we had to take his license away in his early 70's, he managed to clip an MBTA bus, and he realized he probably shouldn't be driving any longer (but he always regreted not being able to drive), he had onset of Parkinsons, so muscle control was starting to affect him.
That South Park episode has a lot of truth in it (and a lot of humor), the grandpa "calling in the AARP", and having them parachute in, although funny, they do operate that way, only politically, rather than as comandos with guns. Still some weirdness with the interior building damage. The two interior pictures have been taken at different times. The Instagram shot does look like it's been staged a bit. The gray sheet to the right of the fender looks like it has been propped up on on-end box.
Other points:
Car looks silver.
Car looks pretty good for having crashed through a wall.
The article calls it a "luxury electric sedan".
Mar 31, 2013
dsm363 I don't disagree that age makes this more likely just that driver skill is a big factor. The mashing down of the pedal, not pushing the wrong pedal then realizing you made a mistake after the first few feet.
Mar 31, 2013
TheAustin As mentioned, a big part of the appeal of Instagram is the ability to apply color-enhancement filters and blur effects that mimic the use of a tilt-shift lens (Google it, I'm not going to start a photography tangent here, but there's so cool photography out there that utilizes actual tilt-shift lenses, and not just after-effect filters)...And that's clearly what is going on in the original photo. As for the car looking white/silver, you can see from the the additional VCStar.com article that the car is indeed white, and only looks silver because the photo you posted was clearly shot through a window, and was causing some glare that made the car look darker and more grey.

Lloyd I drove for 18 hours with my dad (81 yo) yesterday. He is fully functional and sharp, but I realized that he could never operate this vehicle as he does not have visual accomodation at the distance of the center screen. He had vision correction and now has a focal accomodation of 20" or so. In order to see the screen he has to lean over and put his face in front of the screen. I don't think he could be safe in this car without the information on the center console. Any new owner should be willing and able to learn new systems and routines that are necessary in operating an electric vehicle. A full test drive is in order for elderly considering this purchase.

My parents, in their early 80's, don't drive as well as they used to. Luckily they are aware of this and avoid driving at night, and have not been in any accidents.
As for men discussing how women look, you'll need to become a member of a different species if you don't want to be exposed to that. It's part of our genetic programing.
Apr 6, 2013
bonnie Right. But this thread is pretty nonspecific. Are we talking 50? 80? A 35-year old with COPD might be more dangerous than an 85 year old who plays softball twice a week (like my dad). Using age or gender to draw conclusions is inappropriate. I'm 59, looking at the big 60 shortly. Yep. There are some assumptions made here that my 'age group' perhaps shouldn't have a car as powerful as a Model S, perhaps because it's believed our reaction time might not be as good due to age. It's an arrogant assumption.
There is a reason many people quit driving at some point. But it's also easy to make the broad claim that a 40 year old driver is a safer driver than a newly-licensed 17 year old.
Regarding discussions about how women look ... lots of forums for that. This forum would also not be the place for discussions about child birth, pedicures, quilting bees, house-cleaning tips, etc. We want to keep this forum welcoming to everyone. Discussions about women and how they should look just seems like it belongs somewhere else.

JRP3 It's not arrogant at all to realize that as we age eventually our abilities diminish. This is an irrefutable fact, proven by our ultimate failure at life.
Indeed, and that claim is backed up by statistics, as is the claim that older people are more likely to be in these unintended parking lot acceleration accidents.
Fair enough, though if there were a thread discussing what suit, or speedo, a man should wear with his Model S it would not offend me in the least.

bonnie That wasn't my point. I also said that everyone reaches the age where they need to stop driving. It was the sweeping generalizations that I was commenting upon, saying that those generalizations were arrogant. Some of the ages quoted as 'too old for a Model S' were laughable. (For the record, I have had to help more than one person out of my Roadster ... and every one of them was younger than I was, some by quite a bit.)

bonnie Hahaha. Thanks for the good laugh this morning. (I'm assuming it's a joke, because I'm sure you're not saying that Model S sales should be restricted to certain age groups.)
Note the clarification I had added, since some seemed to miss the point:

neroden I think the problem is not so much age, as amount of time since last driving test / last serious practice.
There are some serious problems with people who took their driving tests 65 years ago or more, but who continue to get their licenses renewed without question. The driving tests didn't even require the same level of skill 65 years ago. There should probably be a periodic retest required, every 10 or 20 years.

Benjam On point 1, the probability of something like this happening compared to the cost of installing protective posts around all public buildings is likely not worth it. It would be like someone in the Sahara buying flood insurance - - I guess it's entirely possible but not worth the expense.

Doug_G Three times in the last three days I have had an "older gentleman" pull up to a red light, not really look, then pull out right in front of me as I pass by. Slam brakes, swerve lanes, HONK!!! Definitely past their driving expiry date.
Mind you, this is a growing problem with Ottawa drivers of all ages, but younger ones look first and THEN cut you off.
