Dogs in a Model S?? part 1

  • Dec 10, 2012
    Zextraterrestrial
I plan on taking my dogs down to the Bay Area for X-mas
    ..and driving the S
Any good solutions for dog in an S?? I have 2 Sheppard mixes that don't seem to like keeping their hair on their bodies!

One ~65-70 lb and one 90+ lb dog.
    Soft crate maybe?

Perhaps get them lightly shaved and then washed first? MY Lab sheds like crazy, but after a fresh shave, not only does she look more adorable, but we get about a week of no significant shedding.

Brush them like crazy, put close-fitting t-shirts on them, and get a liner for the back

Never. Negative. Nope. Cooper gets the Armada if anything (hates rides). He jumps out of the Gator every chance he gets when we run the property. If it were just hair, fine. But, literally, five seconds after you get his nails to a decent length, they have grown razors.

    Not my leather.

Get in that Armada that has pen, crayon, and french fry lines all over it.

    + 1 to AnOutsider's tip
Also, I bought this $20 rolled up carpet from Home Depot and cut it up to the shape of the trunk of my current car, leaving some flaps. That seems to do the trick catching most of remaining hairs and mud. Plan to do something similar with my Model X in the future; hoping they keep the flatness of trunk + folded 3rd row.

We have one of these: Large Dog Throws and Pet Blankets by Crypton at Home that we lay on the folded down seat. We use the 60/40 split seat so baby is in the middle and dog on the 40 side folded down with the blanket on it. She went on her first ride last night and although put her paws on the window sill the sill looks no worse for wear. But my girl has almost no hair so don't have to worry about shedding.

I think a pet crate is your best bet, really. I've seen custom divider barriers to separate the cargo area from the last seat, but that seems to do nothing for the finish up to the window sill. I have metal wire crates and they do have a lot more air flow, so it will probably make them more comfortable for temperature, but will also allow gossamer tufts of shag to ascend into the breathable air in the cabin. Also, going to the extra effort of spending $50 on some heavy rubber flooring and trimming to fit would be a worthwhile investment if you make lots of trips with the dogs. I agree with the suggestion of brushing along with some pet clothes as well, but I think dogs shed the most from their underside and rear.

I know a Roadster owner with a very keen eye for detail. He had a custom made body suit for the dog for when he had to ride in the Roadster. The dog looked like a superhero sidekick.

You must have one of the Wegman designs, judging from your pretty Weimaraner. I have one in toile for a leather chair that my terrier is fond of.

My dogs wont go for the tight clothes, at least one of them won't. I do have a decent bit of car carpet left over from doing the rear floor mat and will probably cover the back area regardless of dogs. I'm thinking something enclosed somewhat so they don't 'stand' on the window sills of the rear doors, and to keep noses off of the alcantara roof.

I haven't shaved my dogs ever but that may help. They have the German shepherd double coat and lots of hair.

BTW, when I first shaved my dog, I'd held out for a long time because I didn't want her to look like Mr Bigglesworth. In the end, she looked the same, just with shorter hair (she wasn't at all bald). She also always seems to be extremely happy (and vain) afterward ;)

You can get a rubber mat from these guys:

It's a little odd, but you need to select 2013 for the model year in order to get the Model S options. I've ordered a whole set of these things and I'll let you know what they look like when they, and my car, get here.

I took my 8 pound cockapoo with me to visit relatives this most recent weekend. He was well behaved but I should get a cage for the future. Towels on the seats don't stay. I was anxious the whole trip. No damage done. 400 mile round trip over two days.

I started making the dog carpet for the back of my S
    DSC006181.jpg
you can see the carabener that is attached to the rear seat latch which holds the carpet up and flat.
    DSC006191.jpg
It started raining So I didn't quite finish the second piece that covers the front area but it is all cut and I just need to do clips for the front corners
Just upside down carpet like I used for the floors/ rear and the center
    DSC006171.jpg
I think I'll do the driver and passenger floors too. It looks a lot better

    Here is the front part
    DSC00643.jpg DSC00639.jpg

really just meant for travel with the dogs since it takes a couple of minutes to unroll and put the screws through the wood and carpet for stiffness in the front
we will find out how it works this weekend

I did it tonight going to look at and locate the Atlanta Tesla Service location.

Here are some pics. I put sheets all over the back of my car.

They seemed really comfortable; at least as comfortable as they could be not sitting in my lap.

Sam-I-Am (the greyhound) could turn around and look out the back glass, but could probably have used another 2-4 inches of head room. But she had no problems looking out the front, or lying down. Fiona (the white mutt) was bouncing around like a pinball back there. She isn't used to being trapped in a car away from me or my wife. She had more than enough room.

Unbelievable! My blue heeler *owns* the navigator seat. Requires full view of highway. Guests relegated to back seat. I tucked an old cheap (acrylic?) blanket into the passenger seat and it stays in place. Textile seats. So far (800 miles) so good.

Do you have any trouble keeping it from falling down? Most of the ones I've seen so far want to latch around the anchors on the head rests, but the ones in the Model S don't adjust, so nothing to latch them around.

We had a wonderful Blue Heeler named Bellie. She's been gone for at least 10 years. She used to open and close the windows on her own. We called the button that locks out the window controls the "Bellie Lock." Now, years later we still call that button in any car the Bellie lock.

    Dog loves Model S

Over the years my dog has come to hate my now previous car. I think it was something about the noise of it which drove him crazy. He had major anxiety issues; I tried everything, even tranquilizers, nothing helped.

Guess what. He hopped in the Model S yesterday, and from the first mile his anxiety was gone. He's a new dog and now loves the car like he used to when he was young.

He also used to try to climb from the rear area into the passenger seats in the old car, I think to get away from the noise. Now he loves sitting like this:

That is awesome... wish the guy on 'Noisy Tesla' post on the main tesla board would realize that everything is subjective and if he has an issue, just turn up the music or just put in some earplugs!!! I am sure our dogs will love it (once we let them in it...).

GREAT pic! That is exactly where I was planning on having my furry (and shedding) Golden Retriever ride. My only concern was temperature/airflow back there. How does the A/C work for that area? It gets hot in Texas, so I want to make sure that back window doesn't create an oven.

    Zex,

Nice job! Do you think you could post a template or some measurements so I can leverage your work?

Also, I've heard about folks cooking their kids in the third-row seats due to poor ventilation and sun exposure through the back window, but that doesn't sound like a nice thing to do to a dog. Are dogs able to cope with or avoid the heat problems in the back hatch area somehow?

If you don't want to have to do the work of trying to get carpet to fit the back of a Model S, check out Owners delivery stories, photos and first impressions - Page 80 post 800. My wife makes custom fitted BackMats that protect the sides and backs of the seats and they allow you to put one or both split seats down if you don't have human passengers and want your dog to have more room. My rear windows are tinted so it helps a lot with the sun heat. I can try and measure but it was pretty easy to just fit it and cut with really good scissors. The rear area is easy, it is the front part for the folded down seats that was a little hard to figure out. it all works great, my 100 lb dog can rest her head on the wood between the front seats even( seems uncomfortable but she likes it).

I wanted to take my corgi with me on my trip up to Upper Michigan over 4th of July. But I didn't want dog hair all over the car, as it's really hard to get out of the carpet. After reviewing this thread, I decided I needed something that would cover not only the trunk area but also the back and top of the back seats, as my corgi likes to jump up on things and has sharp little nails. She put holes in our couch in less than 2 weeks when we first got her. So, I decided to break out the sewing machine my mother-in-law gave me, grabbed some newspaper, and dusted off my JR high sewing skills and got to work. Well after 4 days, several sessions of seem ripping, a lot of swearing, a partial nervous breakdown, and a couple of glasses of wine I finally finished. Won't win any prizes on Project Runway but does the job.

Here's my solution. Carpeted the entire rear area with tan carpet that matches the Lloyds and attracts, traps, and disguises all the lab dog hair. Works like a charm. The rolled carpet unfurls to protect the bumper for the dog's ingress and egress.

    A little update:
We had to return a few days ago to Cactus Window & Tint to get the windshield's film replaced....upshot of it was I got the accolade "Well, you won First Place". Wary of the set-up that obviously was coming, I asked, cringing, "In what?"

"That's the dirtiest Tesla I've ever seen!" Even with our blankets in place, what two malamutes and their endless hair do to any vehicle's interior is, indeed, something else.

And in other news, poor Borealis has had a truly wretched 2014. Here he is yesterday, in further consequence of his New Year's Eve fall. That's inclusive of a bone marrow transplant. Tesla-related in that its rear door is far more patient-friendly than, say, the pickup's rear door would have been:

Jumped or fell off a 4-5 foot retaining wall and evidently landed wrong. New Year's Eve afternoon. Dead ruined our plans for that evening, and a month of convalescence (including horrific near-fatal reaction to meds) showed he'd not heal, so off to splint-&-graft surgery. Poor fella. But 36 hours after surgery, he's already bouncing back and little to no more whimpering about the pain. He's a real Buddha and a real trooper.

My 85 lb long hair german shepherd LOVES my MS. Its easier for her to get into than the X5, and with the seats down she can be closer to me than in the way back of the SUV. I have the following, which has nice adjustable 'loops' that can go over the front seat headrests, OR over the backseat headrests if you don't want the seats down (she can barely stand up in the way back though....so, I haven't left her back there yet). It reaches all the way to the back and even slightly covers the bumper for added protection in/out. The sides go up the wheel wells, though I'm thinking of adding some velcro to hold it a bit better.

Hope Bo is recovering welll. And just to clarify: he had a fracture repair with a bone graft, not a bone marrow transplant, correct?
  • Feb 11, 2014
    AudubonB
First, he is doing well, and back to good humor. The significant damage now is to our furniture, as we finally had to put on his Elizabethan Collar to keep him from worrying the cast, and his crashing around the house with it is quite traumatic to things leather, wood and plastic.
But no: he did not fracture anything: he had a carpal hyperextension - that is, he stretched the ligaments that span his "wrist" to the point that they never again will be able to perform their appropriate functions.
To treat, all "joints" within the carpal ("wrist") area are indeed packed with bone marrow, which was donated from the upper humerus. In addition, a st.steel splint now spans the carpals, screwed in to the metacarpals at one side and the lower radius/ulna on the other. Eventually, the marrow will induce the formation of bone mass, thus fusing the entire carpal area into what is effectively a solid bone mass. That, plus the steel splint, will give him immense strength - but loss of flexibility - at that "wrist". He'll likely have a bit of difficulty when crashing through tundra, as it is more difficult to lift or even flex the left paw; other than that if (WHEN!) he fully heals, his job as Official Cabin Greeter, and full-time mattress tester, will be unimpaired.

And the link to you, Huntjo, is that both his surgeon here as well as our 'normal' vet surgeon back in Alaska both trained at Fort Collins's CSU Vet School. Thanks!

Hahah, but the Model S is great car to get to and from sledding ;) If you lower the seats it can easily fit a sled and the whole dog team in it ;) And even with the seats upright the rear easily fits 4+ huskies :) Partly because huskies (and I guess malamutes) are naturally tight packing ;)

(not a Model S, just packing algorithm display) ;)

And this is our friend and former business colleague, Sebastian Schnuelle, resting after he won the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest. AFTER Jenny and I came upon him....and the dogs....like this, I decided to sell him this cabin:crying:. True story!

    Newfoundlands have better traction control.

P.S. Kudos to Roseanne for the backmat. Drove all day, no slippage and no messes, an accomplishment with Newf drool. She even designed a foldout flap that covers the bumper for us.

How is Bo doing? We have two huskies and really feel the pain of having your dog hurt.

    Borealis update:
March 10 is 70 days after the New Year's Eve accident. He's been to the vet more times in that period than all my malamutes over the past 30 years combined - not good. He still is not walking on all 4 - but now it's fairly obvious it's "pain memory" that's holding him back. So we're working with him on tricks to get him to use the affected limb - like getting him to "crawl" using that leg to get a Yummy Chummy treat and so on. His bone marrow donor site scar and the stainless splint scar have nicely healed; on the other hand, insult to all the injury revealed itself a week ago when his support bandage was removed: When they shaved his leg (his fur is intensely thick and matted - he's what's known as a Wooly Malamute - they mowed right through the dewclaw pastern, removing it entirely - OUCH! No wonder he's been in pain. Poor fella.

I thought I'd share the below with all. With the onset of warm weather, I know that there are some central Arizonans - including LEOs, possibly - who take umbrage...or a hammer....when they see animals inside parked vehicles. I completely empathize with them, but with the Tesla App and its climate control, Model Ss are the ideal vehicle for your pooch.
So this is the notice we created, made copies for both sides of the vehicle, and slipped into clear sleeves. We close the door on them as we exit the vehicle. Happy to hear of others' suggestions, but we like the responses we've noticed as we've surreptitiously spied on passers-by.

Doesn't the A/C still automatically shut off after 30 minutes or so after it is turned on by the remote app?
  • Mar 12, 2014
    AudubonB
Yes - that's a good point. We know that, and have to continuously monitor it. You can re-turn it back on.

Okay, wanted to make sure that was still true so that someone else doesn't put a similar sign in their car and unwittingly roast their pet if they are away for more than 30 minutes.

I guess one could attempt to use the VisibleTesla scheduler to setup periodic points in time when it would turn the A/C back on, but that probably is more of a hassle to setup than just checking the car status using the remote app every 30 or so minutes.

You might want to change the url from tesla.com to Tesla Motors | Premium Electric Vehicles

    oops!
I put that last line in for two reasons: one as a smidgen of a cop-out...so that anyone would think there was something a bit "official" in this otherwise obviously homemade piece, and second, for a bit of marketing. It was at the end of a long afternoon and I didn't get the url quite right there...... :(

IN OTHER NEWS>>>>> Borealis today took his first steps! He put together a series of as many as thirteen steps - the first time he has put any weight on his paw; until now he has been hopping around on only three. What a long road to recovery this has been - but at least we now think he'll re-join the dog-world and stop being a bunny rabbit.

Since I don't consider my Tesla as a luxury car, I take my dogs in it. I got a custom made backmat that works great with my 2 Labrador Retrievers, one ~80 and other 90 lb, from [emailprotected].

That's not fair! In Hawaii you get license plates that say "ELECTRIC"...

Congrats on the award too! My Maltese isn't quite to that level.

I didn't know that Cali doesn't have EV plates? In Hawaii, you can opt for personalized plates but then you don't get all the EV benefits the State has (free public parking, carpool lane privileges, etc).

Good luck with your Maltese..I haven't seen any doing agility here.
