chriSharek Why do you think I bothered sharing this with the forum? Everyone wants me to "pay" even if it's with my time and convenience.
I did what everyone always thinksabout doing. I'm not sorry I did it at all and would do it again if given the choice. Life is too short to live by some super-subjective, highly interpretive, archaic law about burning out, which you can't do in a P85D even if you tried.

bonnie Nah, I don't think about showing cops my car is faster. I think about not wasting my time on silly things. But you showed him. That law will be changed in no time!
Do I accelerate? Do I take curves at the max? Oh yeah.
Do I choose my battles and decide which ones are worth fighting? Yeah. The battle you chose, imo, didn't prove anything to anyone. But it made you feel good, to the point that you took a selfie of yourself grinning away with the lights going behind you. Let's not play the game of you were doing it to take on "some super-subjective, highly interpretive, archaic law about burning out". Because you're not fighting that battle.
fyi - I doubt the cop wasn't working today. They just sent you away so you'll have to come back again. Major power move on their part, pulling those puppet strings.

breser I think it's easier to burn out with the RWD cars than the AWD cars, but that's just my perception, I've never tried to do it with my 85D.
I wish I could find it on youtube but Jeremy Clarkson once proclaimed that the fastest car in the world was a rental car. Let's just face it. The OP has just gone accelerated as quickly as he will ever will in a P85D. It's a real shame he did it in Sport mode instead of Insane though.
May 26, 2015
Cyclone I believe that is the episode where Clarkson is racing a Blue, then Red (or was it Red, then Blue) Toyota across New Zealand while May is at sea on a custom sailboat. Clarkson really used Avis' insurance in that episode.
May 26, 2015
breser Yup that's the episode and it was blue and then red.
May 27, 2015
chriSharek These are all terrific examples of drifts and burn-outs with a RWD car. (P85)
As Breser correctly points out I don't believe a burn-out or even chirping of the tires can be done with a P85D. I'm confident that the traction control system is smart enough not to allow the slightest slip.
Brianman, you claim that I was incorrect. Can you provide such a video?
May 27, 2015
breser I'm pretty sure there are burnout videos with P85Ds. Don't have time to look for them. But you have to use the slipstart option or pull the fuse for the traction control. I suspect the burnout videos of the P85s required similar efforts to achieve.

Now he's an idiot? That's not a good way to speak about our law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day. You could have chosen your words a bit better.
- - - Updated - - -
I never think about doing something like that. I believe someone who thinks about doing what you did has a fundamental issue with authority, and so finds a way to act out in some way against that authority. Perhaps you might notice a similar trend in your working relationships, in your life, etc., i.e., reacting negatively to people in positions of authority... your boss/manager/supervisor, your parents, etc.
This kind of behavior is rarely an isolated incident and it doesn't occur in a vacuum.

NigelM So the OP just did what the vast majority of folks here have done (seriously, more likely everyone has done) in that he launched away from a stop light....the only dumb thing he did (and it's pretty funny IMO) is that he did it in front of a traffic cop. The cop was clearly trying to figure out what exactly OP did wrong and talking to folks here it seems Chris didn't actually break any laws except for forgetting his DL. There was no danger to anyone and Chris was within the speed limit. And yes, the cop was clearly confused and managed a royal mess of the paperwork which (it turns out) he had to correct himself; LEO's are mostly pretty good around here but wearing a badge doesn't guarantee you'll never make a mistake.
I saw Chris this morning and he's a nice toasty golden brown already so it would be nice if we could give the flaming a rest now.

Pollux IMHO, funny post re something barely in a grey area, not the crime-of-the-century it has seemingly escalated to in some folks' minds. Didn't even break the speed limit. Most of all, went to considerable trouble to straighten out what would have been an unpleasant surprise for someone else. I wouldn't've even bothered with a comment were it not for the 16 pages of piling-on over something so minor.
Land of the free, home of the brave is becoming land of the google, home of the backbiting. Gotcha, you hypocrite / master criminal / borderline personality defective, you! Sheesh.
I just spent the past two days dealing with some of my daughter's problems, which turned out to involve police departments from two towns (very helpful people all around), a highly-dysfunctional birth mother, a stepfather, an eighth-grade dropout boyfriend, at least one person unknown who I'm still interested in identifying, the department of children and families, and a ton of completely unnecessary drama and attitude. There was even a P85+ "borrowed" at 4 in the morning for a refreshing trip to the local pond, ? mile from my house, which journey somehow consumed a total of 52 real-world miles -- an unexpected jaunt meant not to be discovered by this father, which wasn't even the main show. So on returning to TMC, and this particular thread, it's impossible for me to work up any sympathy for the outpouring of outrage.

AmpedRealtor Why do you think I don't use my real name? LOL! j/k
This guy has a problem following rules and respecting authority, and I was simply showing that there is a larger pattern of behavior here. He's the one who broke the law in such a spectacular fashion to have articles written about him that are now in the public record. It's fair game as far as I'm concerned. It goes to credibility. If you don't want yourself researched, don't use your real name in a public forum. Done.
May 27, 2015
NigelM Because you've got your own dirty laundry? ;-) As I have, as we all do. Just because you can do it anonymously doesn't make it right to dig through other people's dirty laundry; that goes to credibility also.

chriSharek And the same thing should be asked of you . . . if you don't want yourself researched, then don't use your real name either. You obviously have something to hide. I don't - hence I use my real name.

Thanks for this post. You are absolutely right. I thought I was sharing a funny story - didn't mean to get everyone wrapped around the axle. I did something not so smart - right in front of a cop - sure. No problem. I get it. Lesson learned. But, I did have to go down to the courthouse, now three times (their credit card machine wasn't working - had to go get cash) and I took my son to learn that there is more of a "cost" than money. He completely understood and learned firsthand the true "costs" of such dumb decisions. I've always told him, the whole point is to make him better than me. He will be. I'm certain.
Then again, he was driving our Volt, getting credit towards his license, and also not burning gas. Good lesson all around.

And in fairness to you (your snarky comments to me, aside .. but "you're amazing", too!), my only amazement has been wondering why you'd challenge a cop. And didn't buy your 'because the law is archaic' response.
This thread probably wouldn't be quite so long it was just owned as a really bonehead thing to have done (idiot cop, archaic laws, wasn't breaking any law = excuses). But I think it's beat to death at this point. No stone has been left unturned.

We've all done stupid things. Bad decisions make for great stories (and lessons learned.)

stopcrazypp For those saying flooring it on public roads is harmless, I'll leave this video I came across recently (it was roughly 5 seconds after launch when he lost control, so he was going about 80 at the most going by MotorTrend's numbers):
http://jalopnik.com/watch-this-c7-corvette-z06-crash-into-a-tree-1706493325
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1502_2015_chevrolet_corvette_z06_first_test/
While most would say it would be "impossible" given the AWD and traction/stability control of the P85D to lose control in such a way (and the tires wouldn't be struggling to get a grip like it did in that video), keep in mind the "exhibition of speed" laws are designed to cover all vehicles (many of which are not AWD and may not have traction/stability control). I would say there is some legitimacy to such laws.
On a drag strip, if you lose control in such a way, you crash into a barrier. On the road however, you may crash into another car or pedestrian. It is best to save such shenanigans for the track.

May 27, 2015
kuttakamina I wonder how many people buy a new Model S for 57K. Lets be realistic please, this is for all practical purposes atleast an 90K car.
Nice car, cutting edge technology, dedicated community, environment friendly and fanboyism I get it, I get it, I really do!
But don't tell me this is being sold at 57K.
The creative math on Tesla's ordering page reeks of a used car salesman with a yellow clip-on tie.
Lets do some reverse creative math.
Add sales tax, minus tax breaks.
Add the cost of clear coat/xpel etc.
The 1200 delivery fee.
Add the cost of your hourly rate * time you will spend charging on long drives + invconvenience of finding chargers.
Seriously, lets be realistic. This is NOT a 57K car. 90-100K is more realistic.
How much did you spend on yours?
And yes, for that much money, it is a shame that you have to step outside in the cold, take your gloves off, and check each tire, one by one, AT A GAS STATION!
May 28, 2015
Yggdrasill The 70D has pretty much everything you need as standard. If I lived in California, I wouldn't have any problem with buying a 70D + metallic paint for about 73,900 USD after incentives and including tax and 1,200 USD delivery fee.
That is the lowest price I would consider realistic. So 90k is too high, and 57k is too low.
May 28, 2015
kuttakamina Exactly! 74K with,
70D
all base options, not even tech package,
and not counting registration/plug installation/xpel/opticoat etc. etc.
74K is the entry ticket to this party! I don't know why people throw around the 57K number.
Gas savings are nullified by higher insurance costs IMO. But even if you count gas savings, IT STILL ISN'T 57K
And lets be honest, if you are buying a Model S, even if it is 70D, you will at the very least get the tech package, atleast 99.99% of us will.
MOST buyers will go for 85D plus a few options = slightly over 100K.
Even if you go for 70D, it's still slightly over 90K.
And majority of us don't live in CA, most states don't have any income tax reduction benefit (only 6 of them do).
So yes, in reality, it is a 100K car, give or take! Stop throwing the 57K number around.
BTW, in Norway, 100K = 775K NOK (600NOK a year ago) bought you a decent car, but not a crazy high end car.
100K here buys you Audi A7, MB S430, etc. And EV benefits here are nearly not as good as they are in Norway.
Its still a nice car, don't get me wrong.
But people need to stop throwing around the 57K entry price sticker, because that is a bunch of horsepoo.
May 28, 2015
Yggdrasill The tech package has been discontinued. After they rolled a lot of those features into the base model, I don't see any reason why you need to equip a car much more above base. Metallic paint is the only thing I would really recommend to a potential buyer that they should include. (Plus winter tires here in Norway.)
Also, most people don't do xpel/opticoat or the like. And a plug installation doesn't have much to do with the car, it will still have value in 20 years, long after you've moved on to another car. If you count the plug installation you could just as easily count the cost of the garage.
I think 85D sales will suffer with the introduction of the 70D. Those extra 15 kWh just aren't worth 10k. And while most buyers will probably opt for a few options, there's absolutely no reason why not to buy a base 70D for 74k.
A large percentage of Tesla buyers live in California.
I agree 57k is too low a figure to use. 74k-145k is more realistic.
May 28, 2015
Cyclone Darn, my winking smiley wasn't explicit enough. The owner of the BMW M4 that LetsGoFast linked to posted in one of the Bimmer Forums a long explanation of what happened and included how one tire had was 1.5 psi over inflated compared to the others and how he should never had left the imbalance like that. It was a running joke on Jalopnik everytime there was a post about a boneheaded move that someone would chime in that the tire pressure was off by 1.5 psi.

Ugliest1 I get your main point - there are a few things that aren't included in the Model S that kind of raise eyebrows given the price. I agree (especially with tire pressure measurement!!), although someone on TMC pointed out to me several months ago when I made the gas station comment that one can use a cheap 12V air compressor and check/inflate tires anywhere. Since I had purchased a compressor with the car for *ahem* something that hasn't happened yet and I don't want to jinx it *ahem*, and STILL went to a gas station every week or so for the tires, I should probably post *that* on the "Idiot Tesla Moments" thread.
But I have to take exception to the charging time and inconvenience comment. Mainly because of the FUD that non-EV people have about using EVs. They take comments like that and use them as proof that there's no way EVs will EVER be practical or useful. I've taken a few long trips, and I've come to the conclusion that the time spent charging at superchargers on long drives (usually, 20-30 minutes) is actually a *benefit* from the "less fatigue" perspective. It makes a huge positive difference, and only adds 1-1.5 hours to the day. I remember TV ads in the 60's or 70's saying "Arrive Alive" by taking breaks -- yeah, right, who ever does that on an ICE trip -- I never did. But now that those breaks are sort of forced, I actually find them highly valuable. I now think it's a way better way to travel.
I've just realized this has nothing to do with the OP. Sorry about that.
Jun 8, 2015
ecarfan Strongly agree, except that I find the time spent charging adds almost no additional time during an all day trip compared to driving an ICE.
For example, on the San Francisco to Los Angeles drive that I do a few times a year, charging adds less than 10 minutes of time to the trip. On Interstate 5 in the Central Valley I always used to stop for at least 10 minutes at each of the three state-operated rest stops to stretch my legs and maybe use the bathroom, make one of those stops a longer lunch break (I prefer to pack my own lunch), and then there was a gas stop.
Now, I stop at both Harris Ranch and Tejon to charge, and maybe snack at Tejon. I may make one other short stop somewhere to stretch and snack. I hate to sit for more than 90 minutes at a time.
Overall trip time is basically the same, ICE or EV.
If you are the type of driver that can sit and drive for multiple hours at a time, then sure an ICE trip will be somewhat faster. But that's not a healthy way to travel, and the time saved is minimal.
