Best Car in The Doctor's Lot part 1

  • Jan 25, 2013

It seems that many Tesla owners may be physicians like myself and one of the best parts of my day is pulling into the physicians parking lot at the hospitals I frequent. The Model S really stands out among all the Mercedes, BMWs, Porsche, etc already in the lot and daily I get one of the my fellow colleagues asking about the car. Most have already heard about it but have not seen one in the flesh. They are all very impressed with the car and of course I give it a great review. I think a few also have gone on to make reservations. I think the Tesla is going to become the new "it" car for physicians.

Any other Tesla physicians with similar experiences?

Don't know about physicians, but I can tell you that it certainly will be for the only respectable choice for a Software Engineer.

I work (or at least have been for a year) onsite at a manufacturing plant. Word got out Wednesday afternoon there was a Tesla parked out by our companies trailer. I can hear everything going on outside.

Sitting at work (surfing TMC) I have randomly heard "Oh, $H!7" or "D4MN!" almost a dozen times in the past two days. As more and more plant employees come out to gawk.

My coworker commented that my car is making a lot of people smile. I told him we call it the 'Tesla grin'.

I'll be the first in the physician's lot with a Tesla. Waiting to see if the guy with the Fisker comes over to inquire...come to think of it, he hasn't been parking his Fisker in the lot lately...

I am a neurologist and for past 2 months when I parked my car in the hospital lot, many colleagues ask me about it as well.
Lots of them think this is hybrid car and or combined gas and electric I have to explain them it does not use any gas
Zero emission is the way to go

I'm also a pediatrician, but I decided to pull the trigger. Waiting for mine in 2-3 weeks. Mine should be the first Tesla for my group, but it's a very large group with other specialties, so won't be too surprised to see another one.

Yep, getting lots of attention. I started the trend of hybrids with my Prius almost 10 years ago, now there are a dozen or so docs with those. Very few cars that can even come close to the Tesla...my fellow ED doc has an Audi S7 that is sweet and I know one of the ophtho guys is a huge car guy, but he never drives his best cars to work.

I'm a nephrologist. Former driver of a Honda Civic Hybrid, now driving this amazing car.
Getting lots of questions/thumbs up at each traffic light stop on the way to the hospital, and at the hospital parking garage itself.
Slowly but steadily spreading the word about Tesla and Model S around here (and converting naysayers by taking them out for a quick spin :)

Still waiting patiently but will surely be the first one at my hospital. Neurologist. But also GP and planning ongoing back to my family pratice next year. Over here family practitioners/GPs make better money than the hospital specialists (even the attending) - go figure! :)

I'm guessing once the model S is parked in your lot, the Aston won't even get a second look anymore.

And I'm wondering if there are more pilots with S's than doctors?

We may be in the same group :) Maybe not, but I have not seen any others in my lot thus far and pick up the car tomorrow.

But at my hospital there is no "Doctor's Lot." there are just the parking lots, a few of which are employee only. But that's everything from Janitor to Physician so I may be the first one in the Janitor's lot :D

    Cheers.

    Interventional cardiologist here.

As my canuck colleague pointed out, I have been saving for my S, trigger pulled.

I should be the first at my hospital to get one (AFAIK), but some of my colleagues have already bought TSLA stock after hearing me talk about the car and company off/on for two years.

Most are waiting to see how the car will perform in winter before they consider getting one, lots of skepticism about that, it is by far my most common question (our winters, however, are no joke!).

Well Doc, your gonna have to give up some of your Tesla exclusivity come April when my bright Multicoat Red Model S is parked next to your brown one! Even though we both drive EV's I'll be the one passing gas to your patients :)

We test drove the Model S at the same time so I guess it left a lasting impression on us. I blazed the trail with my Nissan LEAF and I loved it but it doesn't have the street cred of the Model S and I certainly looked like a dork parking it in the physicians parking lot. The honeymoon was over and I got rid of the LEAF because the AZ sun was just killing the battery and I couldn't make it to Scottsdale and back home on one charge! Good thing TM cars have TM to make it through the hot summers. Now I'll be able to make it to Flagstaff or Tucson from Phoenix on one charge!

I've been trying to get myself on the schedule with you just so I can drool all over your car. See you soon!

I'm pretty sure that I'll be the first Model S in my hospital garage. I should have delivery in 3-4 weeks.

We don't have a doctor's lot but we do have a "dedicated" portion of the parking lot which is loosely enforced.

Being an anesthesiologist, I get to the hospital early enough that I can get a good spot.

Now to convince administration that putting in charging stations would be a good PR move...

I got my S delivered the same time as another M.D. got their 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo. The cars are basically parked next to each other, and the Tesla is absolutely the grand prize winner next the Porsche. People have come to see both cars and usually state how much better mine looks with the bigger wheels, a sleeker body, and a better looking rear. At almost half the price of the Porsche with tax (no EV tax here), I got a great deal too and can beat the Panamera off the line even if its 0-60 is slightly better.

    Anesthesiologist.

Mine's the first Tesla (of any kind) at my hospital. We don't have doctor's lot, just an employee lot. But as an EV, I can park at the EV/Hybrid spots that are close to the front entrance instead of over 2 buildings away in the employee lot. It's too bad that we don't have chargers to take advantage of all the solar panels all over the lots and buildings. PG&E is claiming that the hospital would be an electricity producer and distributer, which it is not licensed to do in the state. Just another reason for me to dislike PG&E.

As an anesthesiologist, I tried to get GAS SUX from the CA DMV for my plate, but they rejected it for be offensive?!? All I was trying to say is that I use anesthetic GAS and SUX (succinylcholine) all the time at work! I ended going with ELEC3CT.

Just about every day, I spend 5 minutes talking to folks about the car as I try to leave work. I love putting my bag in the frunk just to amaze folks as I leave.

That's a great thing to do for EV adoption. Even if those with big-battery Teslas don't need to charge at hospitals, we LEAF (and other EV) owners sure appreciate being able to extend our meager range. It would help if we could charge at doctor's offices and hospitals, since we usually have to wait.

Will be parking in a VA hospital parking lot. Very big facility lots of physicians however so far do not know of any others however there are a few that I think I can convert .

Hoping to also help persuade nationwide the Veterans Administration to start providing electric vehicle charging 1 would think this would be already going forward however so far it is not to my knowledge. Interestingly they just installed a giant carport with significant solar charging system that I will be parking under.

Doc's seem to love their Tesla Model S's! I am an Ophthalmologist scheduled for Feb-Mar delivery of an 85kW Performance S white/grey/pano/21" grey/tech/sound/air (replacing my 2010 Porsche Panamera 4S-(anyone interested? PM me), my cousin is an Anesthesiologist, his 85kW Performance S brown/tan/21"/tech/sound/air was picked up from factory about 3 weeks ago, and another Anesthesiologist here has a grey 85kW Performance S that he got in December. These are just the ones I know about for sure, there are probably alot more coming soon!

Where the dentists at!?! I practice in a very large multi-state group. I doubt we'll see many at our offices, but I'm sure my MS will have some folks talking in the spring. Internal Medicine--the Queen of the specialties--per Sir William Osler!

I have the only Tesla (Roadster) among phyisicians in Santa Barbara. Tons of questions--in and out of the hospital. In the physician's dining room it is always a big topic of conversation.

One of my colleage's father from LA (he is a cardiovascular surgeon, his father is a pathologist) drove up in a Model S a month ago. I expect to see a Model S belonging to one of the hospital staff members soon.

I tried to get the hosptial to put in charging stations--even with a grant that would do it for free--to no avail.

For those that own your own practices, have you discussed with your accountant if it is reasonable to consider the electricity costs of charging your MS a business expense? (assuming multiple offices or hospital affiliations) Gas expenses are of course considered a practice expense so by extension charging costs should be as well.

    Pediatrician @ CHLA.

Definetely the nicest car in the lot. Ocasionally park in a row of 4 EV spots....usually flanked by Chevy Volts (I've seen a Leaf park there as well).

It does give me a smile when I walk back to the lot and there are people circling the car :)

highly annoyed that we are a major children's hospital (quaternary care referral center) and our EV charging stations are just 110V plugs!

Was scrubbing into a case last month and another surgeon asked me if I had gotten my MSP yet? Had him reach into my back pocket (since neither of us are hospital employees, that didn't qualify as sexual harassment) and pulled out my FOB. Told him to take it for a spin while I started my case. About 45 minutes later he opened the door to my OR with that B-I-G Tesla Grin! I asked him how it was and he apologized that he would have been back 10 minutes sooner but had to stop by his office, jump on his computer and put a deposit down! The per mile deduction is a per mile deduction for fuel, not specifically gas, and it will actually more than pay for all the fuel I use in a year. In fact, it will pay almost x 400% what fuel costs me in my Model S. For work-related driving, that is...So if, work-related driving makes up 1/4 of my mileage - free driving it is in me Model S. Imagine that.

    - - - Updated - - -

Was a bit of an upgrade from my $9K, 195,000 mile wagon to the Model S. Has made quite an impression in the parking lot. Always hated docs with shiny nice cars, though - makes too much of a status statement. That said, I saved for years, during my 42-month reservation, and spent less on all the cars I have had in my life combined than on the S, so no guilt; just fun. A lot of fun. First in the lot with a Model S, won't be the last I can tell...

Hmm.... Not all docs have fancy cars. In fact all but one doc in my department drives a nice car. I drive a camry..before that was 1997 accord w 185k on it and broken auto window. My senior partner drives early 90s Saturn in worse shape than mine and other senior partner drives 2002 odyssey. Only one drives MB S 500, which is fancy. Perhaps I should work for your institution.

Apparently (somebody told me...I didn't hear it myself) Elon Musk himself stated in an interview that each MS owner sells 1-2 MS's (just through word of mouth and exposure).

i have likely sold 2....they haven't actually pulled the trigger yet but it's all they can think about!!!! (It's almost cruel to give someone a test drive of a P85 and then send them back to their luxury ICE vehicle. 1 of the guys owns a a Mercedes (don't know exactly which kind) and the other has a Lexus IS 350. Sending someone back to a NON luxury vehicle I wouldn't feel so bad....but with a luxury vehicle they go back and wonder why they spent all that dough and the MS just puts it to shame. Makes them want to do a trade in (rightly so!!!).

I'm still the only one at my primary hospital, although I convinced an ENT at out sister hospital to get one and he's been thanking me ever since. I got my Roadster in May of 2011. It is still the only Tesla at my hospital. Lots of chatter in the doctor's dining room though. One of my friends asked a lot of questions about the Model S--and bought a Beemer instead! Said the Tesla was too expensive. And he's a surgeon. Us Internists always love it when surgeons complain about money.

I have been trying to get my hospital to put in an EVSE (charger) since I bought my car and even with grants to help them out--no dice!

    Timothy,
I am in the process of working with my hospital. It appears they are looking into an outlet rather an EVSE charger. Were you looking at any particular charger? Also where did you find the grants (local or federal?). Looking for anything that will help my case?
    Thanks

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctor here. No one in my area has a Tesla. My plan is to get one by end ofvthe year. Have a cardiologist also interested but I don't think his wife will let him get it. Thinking black on tan or pearl white on black.

The least expensive would be for them to just put in a NEMA 14-50 outlet--240v/14amps. They could put an 'EV parking only while charging' sign up as well.

In my case I contacted the Community Environmental Council here in Santa Barbara and they contacted the hospital with all options. My contact at the CEC is Michael Chiacos 805-963-0583 x 110 [emailprotected]. I'm sure he would be able to give you some direction wherever you are located.

    Good Luck!

xray, I'm guessing you're a radiologist too. Any other radiologist Tesla owners on the forum out there? I have had my P85 for about 5 months, and absolutely love it! My only concern has been the 21 inch wheel, which looks great but is easy to damage (already dinged by my dad on his first, and last, test drive:eek:), and the tires wear quickly. I'm still the only doc in town with one, as far as I know, but an MRI tech just got his recently- they must make more than I think.

... another Rad here. There are two MS in my group, but we're the only ones in the whole hospital. I'm sure all the docs think the rads are making too much!

BTW, I think you'd be surprised how much the MR techs make. They are only surpassed by the specials techs.

I am a radiologist in the East Bay/SF. First Model S in the hospital was a pathologist with a Signature black (late 2012), then a cardiovascular surgeon with a pearl white (Jan 2012). I'm #3, and there also is an ENT (black) and a cardiologist (white). No other rads in my practice yet, but 2 reservations for Model X. Still many BMW/Mercedes/Porsche in the lot. The ChargePoint spaces are filled with Leafs & Volts. Just got the hospital to add 4 SemaConnect chargers (240V 30A)--less expensive than ChargePoint--and the spaces are in the doctor's lot/floor with proper signage.

Have you checked how much your sono techs make with overtime/call?

I am the only physician here driving a Tesla, but the radiologists have 3 Teslas--all in their MRI!

I have given test rides to a gastroenterologist, a pediatrician, and several radiologists, but no sale yet. Guess I should stick to my day job. I did clinch a sale to one of my best friends, who's in a much higher income category than docs. My wife, who's an internist, has also given rides to her colleagues. We are doing our best, Elon!

They are probably struggling to pay for the 3 Tesla MRI; should have bought 3 Teslas (or Tesla stock) instead!

About a month ago I went to see my G.P. about a cough I'd been having. He asked "how've you been?" I responded that I was loving life since my TSLA stock was rocketing up. He said "Tesla huh? Did you see my Model S out in the parking lot? I've had it since December, I was waiting 3 years for it!!!"

Turns out my own doctor is a Tesla nut like me, only he has the car already and I don't... in fact he was way ahead of me (Tesla didn't really come on to my radar 'til the end of last year).

He is SUCH a Tesla nut that he insisted on giving me a 20-minute ride in it after we were done with the medical business!!! Which was a lot of fun of course, esp. since it was raining and I wasn't used to such acceleration in the wet.

He says he constantly evangelises it to other people and thinks he has "sold" about five cars. LOL

Heh! I remember learning about NMR in physics at Berkeley in the 60s. I thought, "Gee, that's interesting. I wonder if it will ever be good for anything?" And 20 years later I found out!

Looking at your link reminded me of one of my favorite Tesla license plates: 10K Gaus. Not many will get it, but I sure got that Tesla grin when I first saw it!

@MSPRad. Wow. I snoozed and missed a whole bunch of posts on this thread. Yes. I am also a radiologist also. There's another guy in our rad group with a Tesla but the other Teslas at the hospital are owned by various other specialists. And I know that others are waiting for the Model X since that's more what they are looking for.I'm pretty hard on the rims myself, especially the passenger back rim gets dinged up all the time. I keep thinking I should get it repaired but I figure I'm going to ding it up as soon as its repaired so I'll just live with it.

Not sure if you use Powerscribe, every once in a while, it will do a word transposition and "Tesla" will pop up indadvertedly. I think it's trying to tell me something.

Several in my group bought Tesla stock (and I didn't), so they tease me that I bought the wrong Tesla.

Another Rad here too in SoCal. Been loving my blue P85 for the last two months. Just got my HOV sticker early this week. Our hospital medical director (Peds) was the first one to get one in our hospital (I'm second).

Another radiologist here but I'm in Miami, FL. Had it since July 10th and I love it. No other Teslas in the hospital parking lot. I got a matte wrap and am thinking about upgrading to some aftermarket wheels. We'll see.

My main hospital has 6 ChargePoint hookups in the garage, open to all and free (with a ChargePoint account & card). Thus on a daily basis they are fully occupied with Volts & Leafs. I lobbied facilities management and they just installed 4 SemaConnect hookups on the physician parking floor, which will be locked down (card needed and physician only):

Per the picture is says "PHYSICIAN EV PARKING ONLY" at the top--hopefully that's not the case, as ALL EV's should be able to charge, not JUST docs. If so, you may want to get them to remove that.

It's a physician only parking lot.
I'm just tickled it doesn't say "provider" like everything else does. I wanna work at YOUR hospital!

Ugh! Don't get me started! The OGM for both CVS & Rite-aid just changed to reflect that shift from "if you are calling from a doctor's office" to "if you are calling from a provider's office"! I guess everyone "provides" something! :cursing:

texex91--if you read my post, there are 6 pre-existing ChargePoint hookups open to all comers (no charge/$$--pardon the pun) with a ChargePoint card. Physicians were getting boxed out and also had to park on upper public floors, thus the new stations on the physician parking floor.

xray--you are in CA also. The hospital should be promoting good health, pollution reduction, etc. Maybe send them a link to this post....

Hope the Docs fill them up with Tesla's!
