Nice. Ordered the gray one. Now, the big questions... wrap? opticoat? tint? when will they have the premium center console? ;)

I want to know when they will offer a battery swap so you can put in a battery and drive it with your phone via bluetooth.

I wonder if any shops would actually perform those jobs on these models. LOL. I need to get mine blacked out to match the real deal.

What would really be cool is if Tesla offered a 1:18 model exactly matching the actual configuration purchased by each Model S owner. They could charge a premium of like $500 since it would take a lot of work to create models with identical paint, interior colors, wheel selection, etc.

I would love to see someone take one to an XPEL installer and see what they said. $500 for a full wrap?:)

I just got my red one.

Price perception is value perceived. I think it is worth every penny. All doors open, fantastic detail inside and out, steering works, paint is flawless. I know some people who go out to eat and spend this much every week.

I am very pleased. Tesla quality or above.

I was going to buy a $200 dollar USB SSD, but it was out of stock. I kind of want to get one and put LEDs in the exterior lights, and maybe do some kind of simple interior lighting. That's if I can find small enough lights and a non destructive way to install them, and make it look good. For $210 I'm hesitant as an engineering student, but if it came in MC white...

Anyway, do the seats fold? I think it would be neat to show off the space. Also, any chance the price will decrease?

Ugh, I'm not the kind of person to make purchases on a whim, but I'm tempted. I've been following all things Tesla since 2013, the idea of buying something from them and contributing even the tiniest bit, before buying a Model 3, seems great. I think I just got a taste of the feeling shared by all the creators of the "need help deciding color, battery, sound, etc." threads.

@ commasign -- great model. My favorite color combo. Is that the new "midnight silver" or is it the old "gray" color?

I would buy one in a heartbeat, but I just shelled out $100 for the 1/43 Schuco Pro.R resin model of the Tesla Model S P85 in Multi-Coat Red/Black with the silver turbine rims, so I can't justify $210 for a 1:18 scale...yet.

Similar here. Around 230 USD for shipping to Germany. That is just crazy.
I will ask at our local Tesla store here in Frankfurt if I can get it there also. 210 USD is a steep price to begin with, but I would pay that for the quality and amount of detail the model offers. But 440 USD including shipping? No way.

Got mine today.... Red model. It's beautifully done. The steering wheel even works the front wheels. Even has the rear windshield defrost strips. Doors and rear hatch open as well as the frunk. Definitely worth it. Considering what Amalgam and others charge for a similar model I think it's a bargain.

Anxious to see if it has LTE and 7.0.

The fact that Tesla can make a high quality toy that so many people are pleased with, but that actually accomplishes nothing, yet can't get their act together enough not to disappoint thousands of customers who were on the waiting list for center consoles in finishes other than piano black is:

    a) ironic
    b) pathetic
    c) disgusting
    d) all of the above

I'd start a poll, but I'm too disgusted.
  • Jul 4, 2015
    LuigiV
I wasn't aware that there was such an issue with the centre consoles (again not an owner) and I can emphasise with you're frustration but I can't imagine the development of these scale models affects the development of the centre console in any way. Trying to draw any sort of connection between them is somewhat contrieved and doesn't do your point any justice. Other than some CAD models and a little supervision from the Tesla design team (neither of which would take up much time or resources), the entire development and manufacturing of these models was handled by an external contractor. By comparison the centre consoles are an internal product from Tesla. The only way one could affect there other would be if the two products were fighting for the same development dollars, but I highly doubt that. Don't hate on the scale models just because the external supplier can do their job competently.

  • Jul 4, 2015

Or different vendors, one who delivered as promised & another who failed miserably. (Again, I'm not excusing Tesla's accountability on that.) But c'mon. It's not like they just sourced this in the last couple months. Difference is that if this hadn't met quality expectations, we would never have known because there was no wait list. And there probably wasn't a wait list because they weren't trying to figure out what combinations to order. (And who knows how many other things never made it to the shop because of issues...).
  • Jul 4, 2015

Agreed, though I would phrase it as "Trying to draw any connection between them is irrational."
  • Jul 4, 2015

As a collector of 1/18 die cast cars I reckon that is about a ballpark price. Exotos are up to $1000 and many quality makes in the $250-300 bracket!
Two things I am curious about :- are they "Made in China" as most model cars seem to be? And who makes it - Minichamps; Maisto; GMP; or......?
Can someone flip one over and let us know?
Do you think other European Tesla shops will have them soon? Would love to pick one up in London.
It also seems a heavy model for 1/18 scale so extra quality? Maybe it is the batteries.....
I think Tesla would do themselves a really good PR act if they gave one away with every new car! Minimal cost for massive goodwill - and mini Teslas on numerous desks at work and home. Cheap and appealing 'advertising'!!
To the person who was talking of lighting a car, just Google/YouTube LED-lit 1/18 scale models - there are many and they look great!

Maybe you can use the scale model as a console... with the frunk up, it might actually hold a cup of coffee.

    - - - Updated - - -

Tesla really should have made a Signature version and sent it, free of charge, to all Signature owners. That would have been the right thing to do.
  • Jul 4, 2015
    Andyw2100
Of course I recognize that there is little connection between the scale model cars and the center consoles. Even so, Tesla offering these in the Tesla Store now feels a bit like Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

No connection at all? Irrational? Fine, I'll bite.

The Tesla Store seems to be a pretty darn small operation, with extremely limited resources. Is it not possible that one of the reasons Tesla decided not to continue trying to make things work with the console supplier was because they knew that the Tesla Store's very small staff was going to have to be working on processing orders for these toys? Is it not possible that at some point along the line someone was doing something related to these toys instead of doing an extra quality control check on the consoles, that would have caught the problem sooner and prevented the current situation? Is it not possible that the time that it's going to take someone continuing to work with this toy vendor on reorders and modifications couldn't be better spent coming up with a replacement part for the center console?

It seems to me the only thing that would be irrational would be to state definitively that there could be no connection whatsoever between the toys and the center console fiasco in a department so small that all correspondence is apparently answered by the same person who often takes days to respond.

    :D
But Hey, wait, there's another idea germinating from that one... Now I want this: A frunk-shaped center console, with its own lid (hood [bonnet])... and its own recessed "microwave" section of course that fits into the under-tray recess (and holds a couple of phones?). "Just the Frunk, Ma'am." Hopefully at a fraction of the price of a trad CC or the Model Model S.
  • Jul 4, 2015
    roblab
I am sorry that the center console issue is so important to you. I'd figured it would never happen, and then I got mine last month. Before that, for two and a half years, it was boxes on the floor. If I had not been contacted, I was happy with the boxes.

It seemed apparent to me that Tesla Store is simply outsourcing these jobs. If the consoles were made poorly and had to be rejected (mostly trims other than piano black), they were rejected. If another supplier contracted to make car models and are done beautifully, well and good. I don't see how these are connected at all. You seem to feel that the consoles would have been fine if Tesla Stores had spent time - where? - at the contractor's shop making consoles? instead of having some other contractor show his product and subsequently sell it through Tesla Stores.

I guess I never had the idea that my desires are so important that a tiny company should give me whatever I want. I see they tried. I see it fell through. I see a lot of people did not get what they wanted -- YET. It doesn't mean it will never happen, either. And it doesn't mean that their staff doesn't care.

Like any company anywhere, you have failures, and sometimes you hit it out of the park.
  • Jul 4, 2015
    Andyw2100
I appreciate your concern. You point out one of the big differences between our situations: you ordered your car before a console existed, so in that sense being able to get one was a "bonus" you did not expect at the time you placed your order for the car. I, on the other hand, always expected to have the obeche matte console as part of my purchase. I now have a mismatched interior, and no indication that I ever won't.

I don't think the consoles would have been fine with more time spent on them. I fully recognize, as I said above, that there is little connection between the two items. But when challenged by those who said there could be "no connection" and that it was "irrational" to think there could be any, I felt the need to point out how there --COULD-- be some connection between the two, in a department as understaffed as the Tesla Store seems to be.

It's not a question of giving me whatever I want. It's a question of honoring their promises. I spent somewhere around $150,000 on my car, HPWCs, an extra set of Cyclone wheels, paint correction, Opticoat Pro, etc, and one of the things I was expecting as part of this exceedingly large purchase was a console that matched the rest of the car. Tesla was offering it on their website. In my opinion they have an obligation to deliver it, and they have chosen to not meet that obligation. This is wrong.
  • Jul 4, 2015
    Drucifer
I would be amazed if the fulfillment operation of the Tesla store isn't outsourced to a fulfillment house. Almost nobody does their own fulfillment.

I imagine that beyond licensing/legal, Tesla had zero involvement with these die cast models. Likely the maker got the license, and once they produced the model, gave the store the option of carrying them. This is completely different than the vendor on the center console - probably even a different continent since die casts are are all done in Asia and the center console was likely sourced in North America.

Just got mine. Really nice quality. Took some pics outside with my iphone, but with a proper lens you'd be hard pressed to tell it's a model. In fact I sent the pic to a few people and they thought I got another Tesla!

Here are some unboxing pics. I noticed the little square Tesla logo block they included.

Do you have the product number at hand? I can't seem to find this model anywhere. Searching for "Matchbox Tesla Model S" in Google only brings up pages with news about the sales launch, but no pages actually selling the thing. Also no luck on Amazon, Toys R Us or Ebay, nor on any other site I know that sells model cars. Our local Toys R Us store has never heard about the model and even on the official Matchbox website there is no mention at all about it.
Very strange. That model seems to be more elusive than the CCI in other colors than piano black ;-)

    - - - Updated - - -

Is that so on production models also or just on the (perhaps protoype) model shown in the online store? Would be a shame to have to pay more than 200 $ for a model where not even the trim lines up correctly. Then again, as you said, even the 1:1 version had this problem early on.

Now I will have to check the Tesla store daily to see when they get new stock so I can grab a red one !

I hope the handles present when I approach with my fob, those doors are tricky to open without handles!

Just push the rear view mirror to open the door. Can't do that with your 1:1 version!

Doesn't work with the rear doors though.

Just got a note that the models will be back in stock tomorrow.

The "silver" model is more like the gray vehicle color. It doesn't match Mercury's color. FYI.

    Sweet, thanks.

You still unwilling to spec out that one off SC for me?

    ;)

Sorry, must have missed something... Which SC are you referring to - the 1:18 model, or the mobile phone charger?

    Heh

Ah, yes...forgot you had a couple you've shown us pics of. I was thinking 1:18 as I intend to order a model when the restock is available tomorrow.

Anyway, I know you have production constraints. Please put me on the 2017 waiting list.

    :)

That's because "Midnight Silver" is the new name for "Steel Gray"

Also just ordered the red one (in addition to the gray one that's already on display) - my son convinced my wife that we need both

Have to build the Gigafactory first... Will send you a PM in the next couple of days - there's probably a way to get it before 2017 (which would actually turn out to be 2020, if things go the Tesla way  )

I finally got around to opening mine up. Ironically it's been sitting in the garage for a few weeks. I took a picture of my garage where my model S normally sits and used that as a background. I need to take a larger pano to fill in the gaps, but for a quick and dirty job it looks pretty good!

    I disagree.

I think it looks --VERY-- good!

I still don't like the fact that the chrome trim doesn't align properly. See the rear passenger door in the above photo, for example. I can't spend $200 on a model if there is such an obvious flaw.

Suit yourself. I'm very happy with my 1:18 model, minor flaws and all.

How can it have such obvious flaws? Is the head of Tesla manufacturing also in charge of this model? lol

Haha. Just like with my P85D, I don't focus on the negative. There's more than enough positive things to completely outweigh any negatives. But of course if you choose to focus on the negative that's a personal choice. :)

I finally got the sign off from the wife to occupy one compartment of our living room cupboard...
I'll need to add the red 1:18 model once it arrives later this week (unless my son seizes it for his room...), but other than that, I think these are all the models available off the shelf.

For now, only the little stand for the 1:43 model lights up - if I have some time, I might add the lighting to the Supercharger (at least the big one) as well. Oh, and I need to hide that cable a bit better, I just noticed
