Modeler I picked up my new Model S 4 days ago and I'm already starting to regret the purchase. To start, the car came with a horrendously loud constant popping/creaking noise from somewhere around the top of the windshield. But the big issue occured today. I parked the car and got out to walk around it to the passenger side. While I was walking around, the car locked itself with my keys, cell phone, and everything else still in it. Thankfully I was able to find a phone to call home. My wife used my iPad to remotely unlocked the car. But I'm left very angry that something this idiotic can happen on a $100K car. Wish there was a return guarantee...
Oct 28, 2015
ToddRLockwood The car probably wasn't actually locked. The handles will retract automatically after you shut the doors, but if the key fob is within range of the car, the car will not actually lock. The door handles will re-present just by pushing on one of them.
There has been a sunroof squeak issue on some vehicles. (Mine never had it.) It is an issue that can be fixed by the Tesla service centers, and they may even be able to fix it at your home.
Oct 28, 2015
Soolim Locking your key inside the car is very strange and should never happened. Please bring it to the attention of your local service center and they should look after you. Did the delivery specialist gave you a tutorial on the functionalities of the S? If you feel more interaction with the DS is needed please do not hesitate to ask them. If you are still dissatisfied with the remedies of the SC, then escalate to the higher management as necessary.
Oct 28, 2015
tstafford Not sure how you bought it but there are some return guarantees. I know that my lease thru Tesla would have allowed me to return inside of 30 days.
Sorry you are disappointed in the car. I'm sure you can find a way out of it. I'd speak to Tesla about your options.
Oct 28, 2015
andrewket Todd is correct, but it is possible that the car did not detect the keys in the car. The sensors/antennas don't seem to be quite as sensitive as other brands. There are known dead slots in the trunk.
You should have your service center check out the creaking. While Tesla has made huge strides on the fit and finish of the S since 2012, small items still sometimes make it past Q&A. Focus on the major positives - you're not using gas, it can almost drive itself on the highway, it's fast and super smooth, etc, and give Tesla an opportunity to fix the other items.
Congrats on your purchase, and welcome.
Oct 28, 2015
sandpiper I had my key locked into the car once. And I find that the odd time the handles don't present when I approach. But, in my case, I found that the problem is the two other RFID tags on my keychain. If the Tesla key is behind or under them, it sometimes doesn't work. But that's not unique to Tesla; it's just the way that these tags are.
Oct 28, 2015
ecarfan To the OP: please tell us where the fob was located in the car, and was a cell phone or table lying on top of the fob.
Also, when you got around to the passenger side to find the door handles retracted, did you push on the handle to see if it would open? Or did you try to open the trunk with your hand?
I'm sure the noise at the top of the windshield can be fixed. Do you have the Panoramic roof option?
Oct 28, 2015
skboston I've had my car locked itself with the keys in a few times, it's not uncommon actually even with the key in sitting in the center tray. I usually have my phone with me at all times, so that have saved me, but it's not pleasant for sure.
Oct 28, 2015
mobe I have a friend who bought a brand new Mercedes Benz 450 SL with the pneumatic locking system. The car was constantly locking him out. Strange thing is, when it did, even though he had the key, he was unable to over- ride the system. Despite visit after visit to the dealer, they were never able to get it fixed. He finally traded the car back to the dealer because he never knew if he would be able to get into the car.
So yes weird things happen to all mechanical devices from time to time.
I think that it was probably just the handles retracting though and that it wasn't really locked.
Give the SC a chance to fix the squeak. I think you will be delighted at how they take care of you.

bonnie Suggest until the OP knows the cause (use error/the doors weren't actually locked, key fob in dead zone, or service visit rq'd), that the driver control settings be set so that the car doesn't lock on walk away.

Caligula Interesting. I've accidentally locked all manner of things in various vehicles throughout my life. It's never occurred to me to blame the car for this, however. I've apparently been too hard on myself all these years?
Oct 28, 2015
apacheguy Not always true. I had same issue as OP. Car locked itself with keys inside. Tried all door handles and even trunk to no avail. Had to remotely unlock.
Key was under the 17".
Oct 28, 2015
rcarpen22 My question is why anyone ever takes the key out of their pocket? I know it's not a super uncommon issue (as I've seen a number of people write about getting locked out). I have yet to purchase a MS, but I imagine when I do, the key will never leave my pocket. You don't need to use it for anything do you?
Oct 28, 2015
SabrToothSqrl I don't find it comfortable to have the key in my pocket (While driving). so it goes in the center tray thingy. It's never locked me out. I leave the key in it, in my garage at home. I'm lazy that way lol.
If it's a black on black 85D... would it happen to be for sale?

BoldSharpe 1. Disable the auto lock feature. I also disabled the auto present door handle feature as I found it to be annoying as they'd present when I'd go into my garage to take out the garbage, etc.
2. Call the service center and schedule an appointment to get the rattle fixed. It's unfortunate and annoying something so obvious wasn't noticed during the inspection process.
3. Post back here with your results.
Oct 28, 2015
tezzla I have to agree with rcarpen22. I've only locked the keys in my car twice in my life, once when they fell out of my hands getting something from the back seat (1980's) and once in my Mercedes (accidently dropped keys in trunk). NOT the car's fault!
Oct 28, 2015
Cyclone My mother leaves her key in her purse. If she was just walking around the car, she could leave her purse in the car. For me, if I am wearing jeans or most of my shorts, I keep the key in my pocket. If I am wearing dress slacks or a bathing suit, the key sits in the center console raceway. That said, I've never been locked out before either.

Oct 28, 2015
Mark Z My auto present handles were turned off years ago. I don't mind tapping the handle to open it when it needs to be opened. When the garage door is used as the main entry/exit to the house, walking next to the car is a daily occurrence. A double tap of the key fob center also presents the handles. With Model X, I am not going to want the door to automatically open unless physically requested.
Oct 28, 2015
donv The beauty of the Tesla is that you were still able to unlock it remotely! In the old days, you would have needed a coat hangar, or a locksmith to accomplish that-- both considerably more difficult than a phone call.
Oct 28, 2015
mikeash Speaking only for myself, it's because all my keys live on one ring, which I put in my pocket in the morning and remove at night, and otherwise they stay with me. They're small so it's not any trouble, and it ensures I never forget them.

Nigel Tufnel Prediction: Once you experience Tesla's service/repair/replacement procedures, learn to program your car to your liking, and enjoy the wonderfulness of driving this car you will want to go back and erase your post.
Oct 28, 2015
dsm363 You don't need it for anything else so leaving it in your pocket or turing off auto lock would prevent this from happening unless some other issue at play.
To OP: Sorry to hear about the creaking, that definitely should be fixed. It sounds like getting locked out might have simply been a mistake since you left the keys and your phone inside the car. As mentioned above, if the keys and phone are next to each other it can sometimes lead to the car having a hard time recognizing the key fog. I wouldn't let locking yourself out (if that's what happened and not some problem with the car) make you regret such a great car. If anything, your experience was better than almost any other car with this feature. You were able to get someone to remotely unlock your car without a locksmith. And people usually have their key fob or their phone on them at all times so this issue is very rare. You can always turn the auto lock feature off too if you wanted more control and a more manual process. Good luck.
Oct 28, 2015
AmpedRealtor You should definitely return the car because you spent $100,000 and probably didn't even read the manual.

Oct 28, 2015
zer0cool Where's the OP?
Oct 28, 2015
dsm363 Is the car designed to always recognize the key fob left in the car and unlock or does it depend on where in the car the key fob is located? I've had it not be recognized at times in my pocket sitting in the car but just moving the key around solved it.
This really seems like one of those situations with a new product where you say "oh, now I know" and move on. I would be hard pressed to lose thousands of dollars returning such a car after 4 days over this issue. The creaking windshield is annoying but hopefully Tesla fixes that right away.
Oct 28, 2015
Cyclone I still don't get it. When when you are entering the garage that you go pick up your key and put it in your pocket? That's the part that doesn't make sense to me. I go into my garage often during the day, but I only pick up my key and put it in my pocket when I'm going to the car, so I'm confused why the key would be in your pocket outside of you just being on the way to/from the car and grabbing the mail or trash while doing so.
- - - Updated - - -
Maybe the part that is confusing me is that I take out my key and hang it up when I get home, so each time I go out to the garage, they key isn't on me. Is that unusual and other just keep their key on then 24/7?
- - - Updated - - -
Aha! Mine are also on one ring, but sit at the key hanger by the door until they are needed, which ends up being when about to get into the car.
Oct 28, 2015
Marcboy This happened to me and I can repro easily.
The issue is conflicting rfid/whatever wave interaction between the phone and the keyfob.
If the keyfob is close to the phone, then the car can not detect the keyfob, hence it does not see it inside the car => locks
You can also verify this if you have keyfob + phone in the same pocket, the car won't recognise the keyfob.
I have a Samsung S5, if it matters (probably).
Oct 28, 2015
Max* Well for one thing, if he were in the car reading, he wouldn't get locked out.

Oct 28, 2015
ToddRLockwood I've found that attaching the Tesla fob to a keyring with a bunch of keys on it can also lead to problems. If I have the fob in my pocket with other keys, the car has difficulty sensing the fob, even when inside the car. For this reason, I recommend carrying your fob in a separate pocket from your keys.

Read my post up thread. There is no way to unlock the door even by pressing all handles and trunk. This happened to me after I had owned the car for over 2 years. RTFM? I think not.
Oct 28, 2015
rcarpen22 The other thing I find interesting, and I'm not criticizing at all, just interesting, is that the OP is so upset about these small issues. It just goes to show you how different people are. I have been reading about this company since 2008 or earlier (well before there was a Model S). I am finally about to order a car (this week hopefully). I have agonized over whether to get Pano because of the noise and leak issues. If I do opt for it and it ends up being problematic, there is no way it would cause me to regret buying the car, because it's a known and thoroughly documented issue. It may cause me to kick myself a little for getting the roof, but that's about it. I'm guessing OP is absent from the discussion as of late because the regret has already kicked in for the remarks in the original post.
Oct 28, 2015
dsm363 I had some issues with Pano roof when I first got my car 3 years ago but they fixed them in the first few months and no problems since. I believe the number of complaints on this issue are less now than they used to be judging just from lack of posts on this topic here until this one.
Oct 28, 2015

tomp I don't think it's that unusual. In my situation:
1) I take the garbage out by going through a side door off the garage, for which I need my keys. When I walk by the car, the handles present.
2) I often get the mail right after getting home, with keys still in my pocket. Handles present when walking by.
3) I often do small chores or play with my kids after we get home. I don't take my keys out of my pocket until we actually go inside. Every time I walk by the car, the handles present.
4) my wife keeps her key in her purse. When she goes to her car, the tesla's handles present.

Oct 28, 2015
ozweepay The fob is large (esp if you keep it in its leather sheath... please, no sheath jokes, thank you).
So a lot of people don't want to keep it in a pants pocket, especially women, who prefer empty pockets. This puts it at risk for being left in all sorts of places... I left mine in a backpack and, like the OP, the car decided it couldn't see the fob, locked itself, and wouldn't present handles.
Worse, in my case, I was out of cell range, so I couldn't use the mothership to talk to it either. I honestly wish the car could make a direct connection with my cell phone (the technology is trivial, 802.11 is already in the car and in any smartphone), but instead you have to go through the Internet to talk to the car 1/2 a meter away. Ah well...
I'm still overjoyed with my purchase and love my car. My only real complaint is that the 17" is painfully slow and way out-of-date. I wish they would put new hardware in these things.
Oct 28, 2015
Modeler I pushed on the handles (all four) with no luck. It definitely locked itself. I just dropped it off at the service center.
- - - Updated - - -
The key was in my briefcase on the floor of the car in front of the passenger seat. The cell phone was far away in the center console. Yes, did try all the handles and the rear trunk.
I do have the Pano, and originally thought that may be it was what was creaking. However, the noise is there regardless of whether the Pano is open or closed.
Thanks.

Electricfan I'm curious - did someone talk you into buying the car - a friend or relative? It just seems you're ready to give up on the car very quickly to me, so maybe it wasn't your idea to buy it in the first place?
The reason I'm asking is - if all the body panels fell off my car I'd still drive it. I'd complain to Tesla, but I'd still drive it. Most people who buy this car are avid EV fans, or anti-oil, or whatever, but very few who buy it aren't passionate about it. You don't appear to be in the same club, so its strange to me.
Oct 28, 2015
Chris TX Were you driving with the key in your briefcase? Odd that it would allow you to drive the car, but not detect that the key was still inside. Did you put the key in the briefcase after driving, or possibly place the briefcase on the floor after driving? If the car can no longer detect the key, your butt isn't in the front seat, and you close the door, it's going to close up and lock.
Oct 28, 2015
Cyclone Thanks. The key (excuse the pun) in the confusion was that some keep their key on their person outside of to/from the car and I didn't realize that was somewhat common. I do all the above as well, but not with my key unless I was on my way to/from the car (typically the mail when that happens for me). But then I'm not concerned about the handles extending as that is the exception, not the rule, for me.

artsci Decades ago, on a freezing night in NYC, my wife and I drove downtown to see a play and parked our Ford Taurus on the street. When the play ended and we tried to access the car I realized that we had locked the keys in the car. We froze our butts off waiting for triple A to help us. Did we blame the car? No, as it was quite clear that the human in control -- me -- was the fool.

Oct 28, 2015
Soolim Sometimes, buying a car could be an emotional exercise. I can understand the OP's reaction on the two issues for a $100k car. The expectation varies from person to person, so if it does not meet his expectation of reliability and quality of finish, it will be his choice to dispose of the car with as small a loss as possible. On the other hand by posting on this forum, I guess he is seeking advice from the members. Advice has been given, so let us wish him the best.
Oct 28, 2015
RAW84 I'm sure it was locked if his wife unlocked it from the app. I once left my fob in my car in a friend's driveway. When I returned the handles were in, and I thought I was locked out. Luckily I had my phone, so I opened the app, but it said the car was unlocked. I'm on an Android phone, but I'd imagine the iPad app would also show an unlocked car as being unlocked.
With that said, I can't see why this angers you so much. I understand being angry in the moment, but now that you know that you can disable "auto-lock" so this will never happen again, why does this bother you?
The noises suck, and have been a complaint for many customers since the beginning. I've been luck to have avoided that problem on my S. You'll have to work with your SC to fix those issues, which I'm sure will be a trying experience.

David29 I've had my 70D a little over a month, and I made what is perhaps a "newbie" mistake with my key. I was carrying it in my jacket pocket, but as the day went on I took off the jacket and left it in the car. At one point I went into a hospital to visit someone. When I came back, I realized I had left the car in the busy hospital parking lot with the key in it! So in theory, anyone could have hopped in and driven it off.
I hope I don't do that again, but then again, I doubt it'll be the last mistake I make!
On another point, I was grateful for the comment someone made that a cellphone can interfere with recognition of the key. I normally carry my phone on my belt, on my right hip. (Yeah, old school, I know.) One day i had the Tesla key in my right jacket pocket, and the door handles did not present or respond. All I had to do was to move the key away from the cellphone and all was well.
This is the first car I have had with this type of key technology, so it has definitely been a learning experience -- but having to put a key into a door lock or an ignition (as I had to do today to drive someone else's car) already seems very old!

supratachophobia Whoa whoa whoa, this guy heard a creak and allegedly locks his FOB in the car then regrets the purchase? I need to check myself out at the doctor because not even 21 service visits got me to the point of regret....

AmpedRealtor So you're the Consumer Reports survey respondent that ruined it for the rest of us... lol!

Modeler Update: just got the car from the service. The creaking issue was with some bracket at the front of the Pano. It's been fixed. No more creaking!
They found no issue with key detection, but that's understandable given all the posts in this thread. The antennas are just not that good, and one has to be careful where the key is placed. I will just have to turn off auto-lock.
By the way, I also asked them to put felt on the bottom anchors of the seatbelts. These are large plastic parts attached to the bottom of the car -- when the car goes over rougher roads, these bump on the hard plastic of the seats and make noise. Just a bad design; some felt should be placed on these parts at the factory.
All is good for now. I'm certainly keeping the car (until it bankrupts me).

dsm363 Hope it's back soon. I actually love the auto lock feature. You'd just need to get used to a new workflow and that is keeping the key with you at all times. But of course it works just fine without it on.

SW2Fiddler Still going to keep the key in a briefcase?

Shaggy Yup, my 2013 Ford Fusion Energi does this. The app is cool I can see state of charge, lock, unlock, it was one of the selling points for me when I go it. Cool is watching it move ont he Geo locate so when it's in for service I see when they move it out of the shop area to the dealer's charger...

Canuck Does On Star count? I remember my wife locking the keys in our Tahoe Hybrid in 2008 and calling On Star to unlock it for us.
Glad it got resolved. It seems your frustration resulted more from the stress of the cost of the vehicle, and making the payments, than the problems. The problems seem to be just the straw that broke the camel's back. I have only bought vehicles I could afford to buy outright, and saved borrowing funds for buying investments. I only bought more expensive vehicles when I had no mortgages, sound investments, and more than enough cash in the bank to afford them. Growing up without much food in our cupboards, I have a real fear of being broke and can't live with financial stress. I now look back at that as a blessing.

Archer I always have the FOB in my pocket so that it can never be in the car without me. I love the convenience of auto-lock. My wife, however, always puts the FOB in a different place all of the time - sometimes her front pocket, sometimes her purse - so it makes it easier for her to forget where it is.

Max* I thought only my wife did that. "Can I have the keys back?" "I have no idea where they are, let me check my pockets, purse, jacket. O yeah, it's in the cup holder"

Cyclone Hopefully with the cover retracted so you can see in the cupholder?!

Max* I... don't remember. But thankfully that only happens if I step out of the car and she stays and I leave her the key (once I took the keys and she went to park in the shade, as the kids were asleep, and she couldn't start the car, lol. Remote start FTW!)
Otherwise it's pockets, jacket or purse.
