NapaValleyMike i am waiting for Roadster #115 to be delivered. I have found out the destination charge is not being waived even if you pick the car up and do not have it shipped. Also there appears to be an issue with warranty info being transcribed into purchase paperwork. Has anyone here been able to negotiate for a hard top or did your Roadster just happen to have one already? curious about any other issue or problems anyone currently buying CPO has come across? thank you
Jul 11, 2013
Curt No doubt, the CPO process isn't as smooth as it should be. Tesla are focussed on sales of new Model S, so the CPO Roadster program does not get much attention. While every single employee I dealt with was very good and willing to help, the lack of communications makes the whole delivery process take MUCH longer than it should.
That said, I am still glad I bought a CPO Roadster, and I feel it's the best deal you can get anywhere.
My Roadster had a Hard Top with it, so it was just a part of the purchase.
If you care to read my blog post about the CPO experience, you can find it here: http://www.uswet.com/blog/2013/06/22/is-it-time-for-my-mid-life-crisis-already/
Jul 11, 2013
sethr I had to do some negotiating for my CPO Roadster; persistence and also some insistence was needed, but I got the hardtop installed on my Roadster, and they put that, and all the PEM and front fan upgrades, the warranty, and even what UMC adapter I wanted (6-50 in my case), under "outstanding work to be completed" in the contract. I did not pay a delivery fee, and my Roadster travelled from California to Virginia. Though it took some time, I got everything I asked for. Do be sure you inspect everything carefully on delivery before you sign; I got sent the wrong plug adapter and simply put the problem on the delivery receipt. I too, am now very happy I got my Roadster. Best of luck to you!
Jul 11, 2013
Adrian Cockcroft We're also working our way slowly through the CPO process for #889. I have found that sending SMS to Dan and Ryan gets a much quicker response than emailing them... I don't think we will run into all the shipping problems that Curt did, since everything is in California, including us. We didn't have the warranty info on the first try at paperwork, but the latest version (today) does have it. We're waiting for the service to be completed, but it is in process as they found a few things like the iPod connector wasn't working.
Jul 11, 2013
NapaValleyMike Adrian,
Does your paperwork have the destination charge? Also what about the hard top?
thank you
Jul 11, 2013
PokerBroker Put my deposit down on CPO Roadster #105 this afternoon! Looking forward to joining the club!
Jul 11, 2013
shrink Congrats everybody in this thread on the new/used Roadster! I'm in the middle of buying Roadster #501. This process is indeed quite slow and confusing, but the fact that it's certified pre-owned, with a warranty, and reconditioned by Tesla makes it worth it. What other used car has that kind of backing?
Curt, I found your blog very helpful. Thanks for posting that and your replies in the other thread.
Adrian, it's good to know the warranty info is in the latest paperwork. I'm waiting on that language myself.
NapaValleyMike, in my initial inquiry I was told the destination and doc fees are non-negotiable, but I've also never heard of destination fees on used car. I am happy to see others, including out of state buyers, do not seem to have been charged the destination fee and the destination fee was not present in my purchase paperwork. I also highly doubt the hardtop is included with all CPO's. I think it's car specific and depending on what was traded in and if the previous owner had one.
I do have a few other questions for other CPO buyers:
1. My original purchase paperwork included a Delivery Declaration form. I told them I didn't want to sign it yet because I obviously had not received the car yet. You signed this after delivery, right, and not before?
2. The also send me an application for California Clean Air Vehicle Decals. Since I'm in Arizona, I asked if I had to fill that out, but still haven't heard a response yet. Did any other out of state buyers have to fill out that form?
I put my deposit down on 6/28/2013 and told them I'd definitely buy the car on 7/6/2013. The said they put my car on a truck to Phoenix, AZ on Monday, 7/8/2013 for reconditioning at the local service center here. I'm not sure how long that will take, but was originally told the car would be ready for final delivery the 2nd or 3rd week of July. I found it curious they shipped the car before finalizing my paperwork - and before I sent them full payment for the car. Regardless, I'm not backing out at this point and I'm just waiting for them to put the CPO warranty and hardtop in writing before I sign and send them the money.
Good luck and congrats to everyone else. I know I'm very excited. I have a Volt and LEAF already, but I'm looking forward to adding the best of 'em all.

ipdamages A few answers and info on my experience...
- Ryan was recently out of town. I suggest sending emails to [emailprotected] and if you aren't getting prompt replies, say so. They will reply. They're very busy with all the sales to process, but I found it was WELL worth it to work with them.
- I didn't want the hard top since I have the glass top for my other Roadster so I dunno about negotiating for one. But generally I found that they weren't negotiating much. Just pricing well. But as some cars don't move, I suppose anything is possible.
- my (wife's) CPO is having stereo issues and the guys are exhibiting great responsiveness. Superb.
- people outside Calif don't need to get the Calif HOV stickers. Ignore the form.
- my delivery guy was very flaky, but that's the world of shippers. I felt like I was on an episode of Shipping Wars. But the CPO guys were doing everything they could to get the car delivered.
- the car is in excellent condition. 5,000 miles and just got 186 ideal miles on a 220 charge. Tires have lots of tread. Happy they were AD07s, even with a Sport.
If anyone has a question, PM me. From deposit to delivery was 13 days, even with 2 extra days because they had been asked to rush a car so I agreed to have the other car get serviced before mine. I think maybe I went faster bc my car was already in Menlo Park.
My wife now also understands what Tesla time is and people are constantly giving her nods and thumbs up - way more than when she drove that boring 911!
Jul 11, 2013
andy-sf I am picking up CPO roadster #532 this Sunday, just one day ahead of schedule.
My purchase process has taken about a month, but I am glad that it is over. I did NOT get charged for delivery, its not even a line item on the paperwork I have. I was able to negotiate for a free J1772 adapter, which was important to me, because my company has free chargers in the garage, and I would not be able to use them without this adapter. I was unlucky with negotiating for a free hardtop, so kudos to SETHR on that one.
Now I have to find out about the PEM and front fan upgrades.
I didn't sign the delivery declaration form, will only do that once I pick it up. I am glad that they took care of the California Clean Air Sticker for me.
Jul 12, 2013
sethr Just to clarify - I did not get the hardtop for free - I paid for it. The PEM/fan upgrades were free. Still happy.
Jul 12, 2013
Curt Shrink,
You are correct - not all CPO Roadsters include a Hard Top. Each Roadster on the CPO page lists what is included. For instance, #281 (Racing Green) does have a Hard Top. It all depends on what the previous owner had.
I had no Destination Fee in my purchase. Wasn't ever mentioned, and wasn't in any of the paperwork.
1. I didn't see the Delivery Declaration form until delivery, then it was the first thing I was handed to sign. I refused to sign, listing several things, (Hard Top, Tags/Title/Registration, Front License Plate hardware) that were required. That's when my delivery guy produced the "Outstanding Work to be Completed" form. We filled that out, then I signed the Delivery Declaration.
2. As has already been stated, there is no need to fill out the California Clean Air forms if you're not driving in California. My Roadster already had them from the first owner, and I haven't yet removed them. Who knows? Maybe I'll do a cross-country drive just to get some use out of them!
One more thing that could be useful for Non-Californians - ask your Delivery guy for a copy of the "To State Law Enforcement" letter they include with the Model S. I got it in pdf form, so I did a quick edit (in PDFPen) to change "Model S" to "Roadster". I have been stopped several times by Police in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware because I don't have either a permanent or temporary tag displayed (Califonia doesn't issue temp tags, just a slip of paper taped to your back window). The letter has helped in these cases.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any other info from me.
Jul 12, 2013
shrink That's a great suggestion. Thanks. I'm going to request that as well.
I guess I'm lucky. My CPO is coming with with the matching color hardtop. The hardtop is very helpful during the desert summer in Phoenix. It's too hot to take the top off until October.
One more thing I wanted to add - as the other original owners with much more experience and knowledge about the car have already suggested in other threads, get the CAC value from Tesla to get a sense of the battery health/remaining capacity.
Jul 12, 2013
shrink Two more things about a CPO Roadster and I'm sure this will vary by car.
I asked about remaining tire tread and was told:
I had also asked about a J1772 adapter because I already have two Blink EVSE's in my garage. They said they would throw one in for free instead of the UMC, but since the UMC is $1500 and the J1772 adapter is $750, I kept the UMC and bought a used J1772 adapter from another owner on these boards.
Jul 12, 2013
PokerBroker I was told by Kevin that my battery would be reconditioned to 220mi (i understand that's not real miles). I am not getting a hard top with my car but Ryan threw in a J1772 charger for free (although they are out of them and he has had to request more so I may get this later). I was told the same thing about the tires. Was also told that the reconditioning would happen at the Dublin, OH service center because CA is a little backed up right now.
Jul 12, 2013
NapaValleyMike Unfortunately I have not heard from the CPO team since Monday and Ryan's VM is full when you call it. No response to texts or email either. Frustrating......:cursing:
Jul 12, 2013
shrink Same story on my end, but I'm trying to be patient. Maybe they're busy at TESLIVE?
Have you seen the CPO website? They had 8 listings about 10 days ago, 5 over the weekend, and only 3 now. That 2.5 Very Orange Sport with CF and black forged wheels looks amazing. I imagine they have even more trade ins to list in the coming weeks. I'm still kind of surprised used cars at this price point seem to be moving so well. However, we are all here for a reason, huh?
Good luck, everybody, and thanks for sharing your experiences. It's been very helpful. This slow and sometimes frustrating process will hopefully end sooner than later with us all enjoying our Roadsters!
Jul 12, 2013
shrink Wow. Only 2 CPO Roadsters left now and the aforementioned 2.5 Very Orange is no longer listed, which means someone put a deposit down.
Someone at Tesla is working through the CPO new deposits at least.
Jul 12, 2013
PokerBroker I think they're moving through them pretty quickly, mine never even made it to the web or ebay! Word is spreading about the warranty I imagine, such a huge value vs. other pre-owned. I wouldn't be surprised for private parties to have to dip below $50k to move their 1.5s, a little higher for others.
Jul 12, 2013
NapaValleyMike I finally heard from Ryan tonight in the early evening. The word is my car is next in line for reconditioning and should be delivered next weekend. I put my deposit down on 6/12/13. I agree worth the wait especially with the warranty and reconditioning. My garage space is ready and waiting!
Jul 16, 2013
andy-sf I am happy to report that I picked up CPO Roadster #532 over the weekend. I have been using it as my daily commuter for just 2 days, and love it. The car was immaculate when I picked it up, hard to tell that it was 3 years old. Very happy to be joining the Tesla family. Ryan was my point person for the pick up at Menlo Park and he did a thorough walkthrough.
NapaValleyMike, make sure you ask for whatever you can before you sign the delivery acceptance. We were able to get some small things like the Tesla license plate covers, a bunch of Tesla keychains, and a promise to fix the front bottom piece, had some minor chips and scratches. I do cringe whenever I pull in and out of my driveway, since the car definitely touches pavement and makes a scratching sound. This car really sits low. I have to drive diagonally over all speed bumps. Your car is sitting in the Menlo Park showroom, looking very nice!!
Now I will start saving up for a Model X, which will take me 5-7 years.

Jul 16, 2013
shrink What a beauty! Congrats!
Thanks for the tip about the low clearance in the driveway. I was really worried about that at my house and am going to try to do something about that before CPO #501 comes home.
RE: extra goodies, I actually asked for a t-shirt and they said yes, but I am not demanding that be in the contract. If it happens great, but I'm not going to hold them to it.
How long was the process for you from deposit to delivery? Did they give you a list of work that was done in the reconditioning process?
Jul 16, 2013
Curt If you're going through the CPO Roadster process, you need to double-check everything they do, and possibly keep bugging the CPO folks to deliver what was promised. I wish it weren't so, but my past two months (aside from the time I've spent actually driving my Roadster) have been extremely frustrating.
Today, I finally received a copy of the Warranty documentation, and it states that my battery is covered for only 90 days or 3,000 miles, even though the wording on the specific CPO page for my Roadster stated "37 month / 37,000 mile bumper-to-bumper Warranty (including the battery)" on the day I wrote the check!
Looks like another round of threats are in order. I'm making updates to my CPO saga on my blog here: http://www.uswet.com/blog/2013/06/22/is-it-time-for-my-mid-life-crisis-already/, if you're interested.
Jul 16, 2013
blavenn Andy, congrats! I couldn't help but to say that I took delivery of my car 3 weeks ago. Same color same wheels same top same no ext carbon fiber. I almost gulped when I saw it coz I thought you took a picture of mine haha. Then when I noticed the orig style front bumper I sighed relief. Mine is a 2.5 #1159. Happy Tesliving!
Jul 16, 2013
PokerBroker If I was provided with any sort of updates along the way this process wouldn't be so bad. I realize that there are little things that may cause delays but I'd at least like confirmation that the process is still progressing. Sounds like they have their hands full and are lacking a bit on the communication with others too.
Jul 16, 2013
shrink I finally got a small update, but not from Ryan. Spoke with the local service manager, whose email was given to me by another local owner on these boards. My car arrived in Phoenix last week but without firm instructions. The service manager said it took 2 days to for Ryan to respond with clarification. Ryan reportedly said he is working on 20-25 CPO deals at the moment. So the slow post deposit communication is understandable but frustrating. Anyway, because they are so swamped, it looks like non local buyers are having the reconditioning done in their region to take a load off Menlo Park.
In my case, I guess Menlo did an inspection and recommended some work be done. The local manager will be redoing the inspection and updating and seeking approval for needed work. Mine will include front bumper repainting, rebadging some missing ones, new carpets, new tires, and I think touch up scratches around the chargeport and on the rims. Other than the tires, just cosmetic I guess based on Menlo's inspection. He did say the thing slowing down the process is that Roadster parts are hard to get and he may have to wait a while for them to come in based in whatever else needs to be done. They are outsourcing the paint to a local body shop. I asked about PEM and fan upgrades since I'm in the Phoenix desert and he said those would have to covered under warranty if there are issues in the future. I'm fine with that.
However, speaking of warranty, the service manager did not know what the CPO warranty was. He said I would know better, but he guessed a year. I quickly reminded him of the 37/37 including the battery and he said, "That's great. We honestly don't know here because it keeps changing."
All the more reason I want that warranty in writing!
He told me 2-3 weeks from today, so that makes my process about 4-5 weeks. I sat on the deposit for a week before telling them I'd proceed.
Jul 16, 2013
PokerBroker That gives me a little hope that my car is possibly on it's way to the Dublin, OH service center at least... I have met those guys so I'll probably give them a call... thanks for your update shrink! It's worse than waiting for Christmas morning for crying out loud!
Jul 16, 2013
andy-sf Hi shrink, my process was about 4 weeks. I just went to the Fremont, CA factory, where they had about 10 roadsters that were up for sale. I put a hold on #532 right away. I then requested that they provide me with battery health on the #532 and the history of the car. It took them about 2 weeks to get me this information. Then I went in and signed all the paperwork and gave my check. From that point they said they needed 2 weeks to recondition the car. They delivered it to me one day early.
As part of the contract we wrote in that they need to provide me with an inspection report, specifically what was done during the reconditioning and so on. I am still waiting for this.
Curt, the warranty for CPOs did change. We started our process when the battery warranty was just 90 days, but everything else was under a 37 month / 37,000 mile warranty. The CPO program went through 6 iterations, so it did keep changing. They were charging $7,000 if I wanted to add a 37 month / 37,000 warranty on the battery. I declined. But then what the CPO program did was get rid of the $7,000 battery warranty option, and automatically included it on all future CPOs. However, they also added $3500 to every CPO roadsters price. We now have the option to purchase the 37 month / 37,000 battery warranty for $3500, and we have 90 days to decide. So your warranty all depends on when you started the process.
Jul 16, 2013
NapaValleyMike Andy-SF thanks for the update and information. Your car looks stunning! Should you make it up to Napa Valley in your Roadster let me know...
Jul 17, 2013
Curt Andy,
You're absolutely right, and I knew that there had been several iterations. That is exactly why I have been requesting some sort of documentation, and was upset when they finally sent me a Warranty document which did not agree with what was promised when I made my purchase.
After some angry emails and threats, though, they came through with a new Warranty document which reflects the full coverage.
Once again, if you're going through the CPO process, be sure to check everything very carefully. I know they mean well, but the lack of communication within Tesla Motors is leading to the appearance of incompetence in the CPO program.
Jul 17, 2013
shrink Congrats, Curt. Glad they finally came through for you. Your persistence will actually probably help subsequent CPO purchasers such as myself. Thanks again for the great advice and sharing your experience.
Now enjoy your car!
Jul 17, 2013
PokerBroker I got confirmation from Ryan that my car was on a truck yesterday! Hopefully one of the guys from Shipping Wars got it and is hauling ass! It also sounds like there is very little that will need to be done before delivery and he gave me the option of taking delivery of the car while waiting on some interior parts that would need to be replaced as there might be a delay in getting them right away. I said that would be fine as long as it was explicitly stated in the paperwork what would be done. Only a few short months left of great driving weather here in Ohio!
Jul 17, 2013
ipdamages Great news. Congrats - I'm supremely confident you're gonna love it!
Jul 18, 2013
Adrian Cockcroft We're picking up #889 Blue/Tan Sport 2.0 tomorrow. The one shown here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=141000261810#ht_1922wt_1182
Last time I looked there was nothing on the Ebay or Lemonfree sites, and only one car on the Tesla CPO site, so I think they have stopped advertising while they clear their backlog. It's been slow dealing with Ryan and getting the car serviced. We also got the J1772 thrown in for free, and didn't want a hard top. I also took the tires as-is for $1000 off so I can put my own choice on. The existing AD07 tires have some useful life left, but not enough for CPO spec, and I want to put Toyo R888's on next
I also test drove the Green #281 car that has a hard top, nice car but we decided we didn't want a 1.5 or that color.
Jul 18, 2013
Curt Congrats, Adrian!
I'm looking forward to seeing it next time I'm out your way.
Jul 19, 2013
NapaValleyMike Still waiting on #115 here. I received my paperwork but there is no mention of the warranty for the car or the battery. That was back on Sunday 7/14/13 and no response since that time. I did reply back to Ryan asking about this paperwork issue regarding the warranty and asking for update on the refurbishment of the car but no word as of today. I'll keep you posted as I move through this VERY slow process. Probably a good thing they pulled back on marketing the cars as the process is already very slow. I was able to get a copy of the master list of all available Roadsters it is big number of cars in inventory.
Jul 19, 2013
shrink Other CPO buyers - sounds like a few of us might be in the market for a J1772 adapter. Tesla offered me one instead of a UMC, but I ended up taking the UMC and buying a used J1772 adapter from these boards. If you can't negotiate one from Tesla, The Can product looks like a better option and had I know about it, I would have snagged one of these instead:
The CAN - Tesla to J1772
Looks way more convenient than the big cable from Tesla. I think one of the Roadster owners here might make them. Anyway, looks pretty solid if anyone else is looking. Wish I had know earlier.
Jul 19, 2013
Doug_G Yes, he's a forum member - see Short and sweet J-1772 to Roadster adapter - lockable for his original thread.
Jul 19, 2013
Adrian Cockcroft I think we saw #115 (Red) in the Menlo Park showroom, when we were picking up our car today.
Jul 20, 2013
NapaValleyMike Adrian,
Thanks for the update one step closer I suppose....
Jul 21, 2013
NapaValleyMike well I heard from Ryan today. My car is located in Menlo Park now and is in cue to be completed this week. including fan and PEM upgrades. The target delivery date is Monday 7/29/13. I put my deposit down on 6/12/13 so this has been a bit of a wait but worth it. We also got the 3/37 car and battery warranty paperwork finished. According to my conversation with Ryan today the Roadster CPO program is now sold out! He said all cars are sold and they are working through refurbishment. I really feel like I got a great deal on abetter than new car in the exact color combo I wanted. So yes the wait has been annoying but worth it. Last week the electrician installed my NEMA 14-50 with 50 Amp service and the kicker it is color matched to my car Fusion Red and Tan

Jul 22, 2013
shrink That's great. Congrats! I haven't heard anything from Ryan since 7/8 despite 3 or 4 e-mails. I'm actually financing the purchase because my investments have been earning way more than the 1.7% lender rate, but my rate expires on 7/30 and I've told Ryan I want to wrap it up this week. It is very frustrating.
I was, however, actually able to see the car in person over the weekend at the local service center. It was really nice to see the car since I was essentially buying it sight unseen, although I did test drive one locally before deciding to proceed. I took a few photos and went for a ride on the test track - and WOW! That was fun.
I cannot wait!
Jul 23, 2013
ipdamages I heard from another person in the CPO group and this isn't quite accurate. They have sold all of the cars that were ready for sale, but there are still lots of cars that have not yet been refurbished and which are in the loaner program. They are all for sale and will in time be refurbished and put up on eBay and/or the CPO site. But the best thing to do is to email [emailprotected] with your parameters and they will try to find a match. Also, as regards CPOs abroad, Tesla will be making some offers for such cars where they are permitted to do so.
Jul 23, 2013
PokerBroker I spoke with the local service manager at the Dublin service center today. He informed me that my Roadster is scheduled to arrive Wed or Thurs this week. He said that barring any major issues he would expect to have the car reconditioned for me for delivery next week. Communication from the service center has been phenomenal and has helped me through the times of hearing nothing from the CPO team. Hopefully the final paperwork is ready when the car is!
Jul 23, 2013
shrink I've heard that, too, and it makes me wonder about the listing criteria. Specifically at what point does a Roadster move from "in queue" to "Ready for Listing." Many of us who put deposits down on the listed CPO Roadsters have still had to wait several weeks for reconditioning to be completed. So a listed Roadster is certainly not fully reconditioned yet.
It's been a very slow process thus far.
I hope it improves with the next round of availability for future buyers.
Jul 23, 2013
PokerBroker I don't believe any of the Roadsters are reconditioned until after they are sold... some are demos, or loaners and I'm pretty sure Tesla is just selling them, then reconditioning them as they have interest in their inventory of vehicles.
Jul 24, 2013
skadax New member here. Just got interested in Tesla about 2 months ago when a business partner of mine bought a Model S. I was immediately taken to it and now I'm in the process of buying a CPO roadster. Just got the docusign paperwork tonight and noticed no charges for destination/registration/tax/etc. I can't imagine they're not gonna charge me sales tax? Wanted to see what some others here had seen on their purchase orders. Also the warranty clause still seems to be the same generic phrase with no mention of the promised 37/37 including battery. In any event, can't wait to get it. I think I've read just about every possible thread on this forum in anticipation.
Jul 25, 2013
shrink skadax, welcome! Good seeing you over the weekend. I think we both had ridiculously wide grins after finally seeing and riding in our cars in person.
I finally received some paperwork tonight as well. Mine did have some warranty info and I can e-mail that to you. Just send me a PM.
RE: taxes, Tesla won't charge us, but we will be responsible for paying the taxes when we register the car at the DMV. I think Maricopa county is 6.6% You'll need that several thousand dollar amount at the DMV when your register. Then a few weeks later, since the laws changed a few months ago, your municipality will bill you the use tax. In Phoenix, it's 2%.
Yeah, all that hurts, but the good news is that we can register the car for a super low price. As you know, it's typically based off the MSRP of the car, so my $40K+ Volt was about $700 to register the first year. By contrast, my LEAF was about $21. I believe the Roadster will cost about the same. At that rate, I just might do a 5-year registration for $100 or so.
Good luck!
Jul 25, 2013
shrink ...and for anyone still looking, 4 more CPO Roadsters just got listed on the Tesla site.
Jul 29, 2013
PokerBroker Ugh... my Roadster reconditioning is expected to be completed this week at the Dublin, OH service center (those guys have been great!)... however, apparently Tesla missed a signature line from the previous owner on the title and cannot move the title to their name so they can sell me the car... now I have to wait until the original owner signs the appropriate docs, sends them back to Tesla, and the title is transferred to Tesla's name... pray to God this all happens in a timely fashion, I'll be pretty annoyed if my car is all done and waiting and I can't even pick it up
Jul 29, 2013
shrink I'm very sorry to hear that and hope it resolves quickly. You'd think Tesla would have caught that before offering the car up for sale? Weird.
My car was sent to the body shop for touch up repainting on Friday and I was told that - barring any surprises - the car would be ready by the end of this week. I received the warranty paperwork the middle of last week and overnighted my final payment to Tesla Friday. Per my tracking information, it arrived today. I asked Ryan for confirmation and he said he had e-mailed someone but had not heard back yet. I don't anticipate any issues, but if someone overlooked a signature line for you, I'll feel better once they confirm they have my money and paperwork.
Good luck!
This process really could be much smoother and faster.
Aug 7, 2013
PokerBroker Well I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Ryan Kennedy and the CPO Roadster program... as a sales professional I expect much better follow up and communication than I have received from Ryan (my customers would have lynched me by now)... I have not heard from Ryan since my last post 9 days ago in spite of two follow-up emails... it had taken him more than 7 days to follow-up on my previous email as well... we are now approaching 30 days since I started this process... as far as I know we are still waiting on a signature from the previous owner which has taken 4 weeks to obtain??? I can't help but think that Ryan's follow-up with the previous owner is likely as poor as his follow-up with me and is dragging this process out... I know that there are many Tesla-enthusiasts who might say this is just part of the process but I still expect good customer service... am I nuts? Anyone know who Ryan's boss is or someone further up the sales ladder that I can reach out to?

sethr I, too had difficulties (very similar to yours) with my CPO purchase. Similar timeline, too. Difficult, but in the end worth it. I only spoke to Ryan once, at the very beginning. In any case, Kevin Yu was the person who got things done for me. I found him to be very responsive. Perhaps you should send him an e-mail and see if he can get things done for you. Send it to kyu(at)teslamotors.com. My understanding at the time was that he was in charge of the CPO program. Best of luck!
Aug 7, 2013
PokerBroker thanks for the note! Kevin was the person that kickstarted my process although I believe he has been relocated to China to get things moving there... this process is worse than waiting for Christmas morning
Aug 7, 2013
shrink I was told Kevin was in charge of the CPO program and that Ryan worked under him. I still don't have my car yet, but they told me this Friday, 8/9/2013. I'll post an update on my process after delivery.
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time, PokerBroker. It really dampens the initial excitement. This whole process needs to get better. I do imagine that in the end it will be worth it, but you deserve better much better communication. Good luck! Hope you have your car soon.
Aug 7, 2013
thefortunes +1 for Kevin.
Even though he is over in China, he has still been very responsive as I consider the various CPO's that come available.
Aug 7, 2013
skadax Another 2 cents here. I'm going thru the same process now as well and have been promised a Friday 8/9 delivery. I'm in Phoenix along with shrink and I understand both of our cars are being reconditioned here locally. Ryan helped me at the very beginning as he was the first person to call me. Since then it was basically Brandon De Leon ([emailprotected]) who did everything else and was very responsive. More so by email than phone call, but still usually same day updates. Ryan is now much more involved in these finally stages. Although the process can be slow at times I genuinely believe they are all trying very hard to keep the whole program moving. Good luck to all and I'll update on Friday once I (hopefully) take delivery...

PokerBroker Aside from my frustrations (sounds like everyone had some) it looks like I will be taking delivery mid-next week! I'm sure I'll forget about all the 30 day process and frustrating communication once I'm sitting behind the wheel of my British Racing Green beauty! In the end it is well worth the process for any prospective CPO buyers and hopefully the process gets better and better as they go! I'll probably be first in line for a CPO Model S once they start arriving as trade-ins on the Model X in late 2014, early 2015!
Notes:
(1) Although communication with Ryan Kennedy was frustrating at times, it is evident in the end that he was working diligently towards our mutual goal the whole way (a little better responsiveness on emails would be nice, I would rather hear "I'm still working on it" than get no response for 9 days).
(2) USAlliance Federal Credit Union was nothing less than SUPERIOR to work with! They were on the ball every time I spoke to them or emailed them. Special thanks to Jon Krumdick.
(3) Dave and Doug at the Dublin, OH Service Center are superstars of customer service and communication.

shrink Roadster #501, the very first 2.0 I believe, found its way to its new home today via the CPO program
I just got home from a cruise around town including a show and tell at my fiancee's workplace. She happens to work at the local utility company (power and water). A lot of engineers were gawking.
Wanted to share a couple of quick pics below. I have definitely have some more thoughts about this long process that I might share later. I just want to enjoy the car for now.

skadax Another update from Phoenix as well, shrink I'll see you on the road in your beautiful orange 501 - congrats!
After the long wait I am proud to have taken delivery of Roadster 545 today.
First impressions, I'm blown away - the detailing job on it is amazing.
Couple gripes I do have are I didn't get any education on the car or how to charge etc. There is no user manual included. And finally they are out of UMCs so I have to charge on 110V until they can get one to me.
Nonetheless, I'm thoroughly enjoying.
Here's a couple of pics as well (the boxster being replaced can be seen in background).

Aug 18, 2013
asgard I took delivery of 474 in Menlo Park. Process was a bit slow and it was hard to get their CPO sales dept to respond initially, but when they got going it was smooth.
I did not get any of the freebies that others are getting - the J1772 adapter. I did not ask for a PEM upgrade (should have read this thread) but the PEM looks absolutely new and the battery hold 192 miles on ideal.
The 37/37 warranty is some peace of mind, but I do worry about whether Tesla plans to support the vehicle after that.
Aug 18, 2013
AEdennis No freebies here... And UMC AND J1772 from Tesla are both backordered.
So, L1 charging and occasional visits to Tesla's store (20 miles away) for some charging for my wife's soon to be delivered #78 Roadster.
So, how many of you that jumped into a CPO Roadster was driving another EV/Plug-in Hybrid before getting your Roadster?
I'm an Active E Driver myself (That's why AEdennis on all the boards, rather than pick the more generic EVdennis).
Car should be arriving in Southern California today, and be at the Service Center getting prepped tomorrow (or longer if they find other things) and delivered Monday night at earliest.
We're excited... Just not about L1... I placed an order with hcsharp for the "CAN", but he's waiting on parts, so that's delayed too. My wife will have to go L1.

Aug 26, 2013
AEdennis Looks like I spoke too soon...
Still waiting on #78. We did get to visit it and drive it this weekend. There was a portion that failed the CPO process that is waiting on a part. Car is drivable, but we decided to wait until it passes all the CPO things before we take delivery.
Of course Tesla has received the check and our first payment will be due three weeks from now... So, here's to hoping that the fix is sooner rather than later.
There is definitely room for improvement in the CPO Roadster process. Let's hope that these are fixed by the time that Model S are in the CPO pipeline.

My Blog (mainly Active E for now and Tesla stuff as it grows...)
Active E driver with 42,500 miles in 18 months. Roadster #78 when they finally complete PDI (missed the new estimate of Saturday August, 24) Now wondering when we're getting this beauty, waiting for new feedback on the stuff they have to "bring up to CPO standards". The positive aspect of this delayed delivery is that my manual sig line is often longer than my actual posts AND gives me more material for my blog, when I officially announce the arrival of our Signature Green Roadster. Oh and a Tesla Model S modified request to October 2013 (moved up from November because of our ongoing CPO delivery experience) delivery in Blue/Tan WITH Sub-zero Package in Southern California... Because COLD is a relative term.
Aug 26, 2013
Timbrewer Not yet since the techs had an electronic part act up late last week and they are waiting for delivery of the new part...which is fine with me! They were great about calling me so I didn't drive out there! Ryan also called me and txtd me to make sure I knew what was happening.
I'm talking to them today about plans for this week, including getting a Maryland safety inspection done so i can register the car ASAP!
I'll post an update later today when I hear from Nathan at the Rockville service center
Aug 26, 2013
shrink I've had my CPO Roadster for 2-1/2 weeks. I'm still not sure how to register the car. I was told the "DMV team" would be sending me some paperwork. I sent in an inquiry last week and they asked for my driver's license number and expiration date. I had previously given them that information when I put my deposit down on the car - back on July 6th.
The CPO process is, um, unusual and inefficient, but I am very happy with the car.
Aug 26, 2013
Curt I think that statement sums it up nicely!
Aug 26, 2013
PokerBroker I also love mine but am waiting on paperwork so I can register in Ohio... has been two weeks and I'm pretty sure the temporary CA registration is only good for 30 days! I also did not receive my UMC or 120 spare chargers (just a MC240) and have yet to get an update from Ryan on the availability/timing for those. There are also a few parts my service center is waiting on (I took delivery early and had some items due billed) including the stereo (bummer) and the seats.
Aug 26, 2013
Curt Fortunately, the California Temporary Registration is good for 90 days. Otherwise, I would have ended up with a Roadster that had to sit at home for a month waiting for the Maryland registration to come through.
Aug 26, 2013
Chris A fact that didn't prevent a Montgomery county cop from issuing me five (!) tickets for missing Maryland registration, plates, etc. and impounding the car (it had the CA temp registration displayed)
Aug 26, 2013
shrink Oh wow. That is most unfortunate. I am very sorry to hear that. Curt, was it you who mentioned something about a "Letter to Law Enforcement?" for just such an instance?
Aug 26, 2013
Curt That was me!
I was also stopped multiple times by Montgomery County cops. Never got a ticket, though...
The first time, I explained the situation to the cop, who strongly suggested that I take the car home and not drive it until I had Maryland tags. I asked at the Rockville Service Center the next day, and they gave me the Dear State Law Enforcement letter. I continued to get stopped for two months, but the letter (along with copies of all of my purchase paperwork) seemed to do the trick.
Aug 26, 2013
ipdamages Holy schnikies! Wow, that is ridonculous. We are still waiting on our plates and tags after 7 weeks, but loving the car every day. My wife has gotten pulled over twice - in California.
I understand there was a backup on paperwork getting processed, but much of that recently got pushed out (birth analogy intended) so hopefully this will all soon be a fading memory.
Aug 26, 2013
skadax I also have not received any title paperwork and it's been about 2.5 weeks for me as well. I did go to the AZ MVD and get a temporary 90 day registration. I still got pulled over this am by the highway patrol because he "couldn't see" my registration. I got lucky though and was let go with just a warning. I mostly think he just wanted to look at my car and ask me questions. Which is annoying because it made me late for work!
Aug 26, 2013
shrink 7 weeks!? Yikes. Did you buy a CPO?
I heard some new staff was party responsible for the delay. I hope it gets resolved soon. I'm not too far from skadax and I don't even have temporary AZ plates. I've been driving around with the temporary CA ones, which sadly look easily forged. I also put in the glove box my purchase paperwork, e-mail thread including my request for registration paperwork and Tesla's response, and my insurance card.
I feel lucky I haven't been pulled over. I'm even luckier I don't need to drive the Roadster daily right now since we have other daily drivers right now.
skadax, hope you weren't too late for work!
Aug 27, 2013
JohnnyLounge21 Reading through this thread, I must say that comparatively, I had an outstanding experience start to finish (now - being - we'll say, 99% the way there).
I found #1190 on eBay in mid-June and pounced after a few days of personal debate having been a Roadster fan for about 2 years now. I went ahead and paid the full asking price and asked for nothing beyond the car as it sat. An additional SPANK was the 9.5% sales tax that I had to cough up on top of the purchase price. Talk about a BEAT DOWN. Bottom line: A few emails went back and forth between Ryan and Kevin Yu - and I decided if I wanted the vehicle and not have someone else take it, I was going to have to pay the full price and quick.
My Roadster didn't come with a hard top - and I was less than concerned b/c I ordered the Glass Hard Top the very next day (which I think is the top that was meant to be sold with the Roadster in the first place). After about 7 days of reconditioning, they put #1190 on the truck, sent me a picture of it (on the truck), and 48 hours later it went from San Francisco to Chicago. I mean - really? That's amazing. The service center in Chicago was all smiles when #1190 rolled up (they mostly deal in the Model S so this was a treat). When I called they said it was a "husband and wife trucking team" that they had used in the past to get it home so quick. How cool is that? The Service Center in Chicago has, I must say, amazing people that work there. They really love what they do and make you feel part of the family. Delivery of the Roadster was a bit thin b/c they were all Model S guys there. So I still need a full vehicle delivery. . . I was delighted to see #1190 had been fitted with brand new tires on the front and back (still had the nubs). And overall, it was gorgeous. However, I made notes of about a dozen imperfections (and I am the most anal person I have ever met) and they were noted and ordered and promised to be remedied once the parts were in. Driving the vehicle the last 6 weeks has been a dream. I've luckily never been pulled over now thinking its just a matter of time. . . Although, I got an email from Ryan earlier this week asking for my license and proof of insurance (good sign). I let him know that the folks @ Chicago Service had this info the Chicago guy sent Ryan my DL immediately and I had the insurance papers on my harddrive so I pinged those over too. Anxious to get my IL plates!
I've discovered a few more imperfections when I detailed it myself so those have been added to the list. I also had a low voltage warning the night I first plugged #1190 in - I sent a picture message to the 4 folks @ Tesla who's mobile numbers I have - and got immediate responses! On Independence Day! So fricken helpful and so awesome. Even literally said "We take care of family - especially on holidays" from Kevin Yu.
Start to finish, it took less than 3 weeks from putting down my deposit to getting the Roadster in hand 2,500 miles away (delivered on 7/2, deposit mid-June). I'm bringing in the vehicle next week and letting them keep it for 10 days to tie down all loose ends. I just wish I'd had my hands on this beauty quicker. It's truly my dream car!
An additional aftermarket item (beyond the Glass Hard Top) I purchased was The Can adaptor (the only adaptor that ever should have been produced). Im now looking into a possible power steering mod and a mod to get daytime parking front lights running. Its like honing a perfect 104 mile per hour fastball to go right over the center of the plate. What a car!
Aug 28, 2013
shrink Hey Johnny -
Thanks for sharing your experience. I grew up in Chicago (city, not the 'burbs) and didn't leave until after grad school. GREAT city! Just don't like that weather. If they'd cancel winter, I'd move back from the desert in a heartbeat! ;-)
I'd love to drive the Roadster top down along Lake Shore Drive into downtown at night - less traffic and amazingly lit skyline.
But you've had the car almost 2 months and still no plates? I'm sorry folks, that's not right - especially when one of our Maryland owner's car was recently impounded with multiple tickets issued. Tesla needs to fix this. State specific dealership issues aside, this is a nonetheless a rather basic and necessary part of selling a car. It really needlessly puts an owner at too much risk.
My Roadster is going into storage mode in my garage until I get some plates. It's not worth a ticket or potential impounding. How can you even get it out of impound without proper registration? I remember daily impound rates being rather painful as well.
Aug 28, 2013
JohnnyLounge21 The weather in Chicago is absolutely unacceptable. I couldn't agree more. But being the super-city that it is, I'm happy to have lived here the last 12 years after college and had an amazing time. And I've done the LSD drive several times - with no particular place to go! And it's fantastic in the Roadster with the skyline front-ground. Good news: we live in a country where there are climate options. Lord willing, I'll be moving to SoCal at/around Christmas. So that should close the book on living with only 4-6 months of tolerable weather.
Regarding the plates - yes! This is an open item Tesla needs to fix ASAP. I thought I'd have mine by now, no doubt. My GF's bro got a new BMW and I think he drove off the lot with the plates. . . So I'm nowhere close to that. I'll take a look at my temporary IL registration and see how long I've got before it gets scary (I think it's 90 days). IL also requires front plates (which are going to look pretty ugly, but there's no stopping that). . .

Timbrewer Hey Botbldr45..heard the news today that Tesla HQ has overnighted a working electronics unit with the correct firmware to Rockville so I'm planning on picking up this Friday!!! I will let you know the Annapolis electric road rally dates I'm available.
Since putting my deposit down July 8th I've had an overall good experience, of course huge thanks to Curt!! I think not paying for the car until last Friday made a difference in my mindset. I'll post my experience and thoughts once I get the car and drive it a few days.
Again this forum and all of your invaluable experiences and information have been a huge help to me.
Until I talked to Curt at an EV meet up July 6th, I didnt even know I wanted a Tesla Roadster...now I can't wait for this to be in my garage stable

Aug 29, 2013
neroden I suspect that the problem is partly that Tesla still does not have specialist teams for paperwork in each of the 50 states (every state's DMV process is different), and partly that Tesla still has terrible internal communications (Tesla *had* a NY specialist when I bought my model S, but my information was not *forwarded* to him until I asked to get his phone number directly). It's possible that asking for the name and direct number of the "Maryland DMV paperwork specialist" will get satisfaction... if there is a Maryland DMV paperwork specialist.

ipdamages Huge congrats, Tim and Johnny.
While I had some delays in getting plates for my wife's car, they came about a week ago, so all is good. She put the front plate on. I can't bring myself to do it, and I've yet to be pulled over in two years of driving it (knock on wood).
All in all, I had a very positive experience with the CPO team. I know I was part of a massive wave of activity, which is somewhat to be expected when you seize upon a unique opportunity. But they did me right and I am happy to cut them a little slack due to the circumstances.
Sep 12, 2013
shrink I finally received my registration paperwork today, 9/11/2013. I took delivery on 8/9/2013, so it was just over a month.
On the one hand, I can see why it took a bit. They had to find the title and complete the proper forms on the title, then find and complete some Arizona specific paperwork. Not being an Arizona auto dealer, I can see how that take some work.
On the other hand, buying a used car without a title is a bit strange. Also, considering the initial deposit of $2500, it was the first time I have ever spent that much money and did not receive a receipt.
So, for me it was 1-month between deposit and delivery, and another month between delivery and registration paperwork.
Now I get the pleasure of paying some taxes. Woo hoo! LOL.
Sep 12, 2013
PokerBroker I received my paperwork earlier this week as well. The only items I needed were the CA title and Bill of Sale/MVPA. Shouldn't have been that difficult. Other than that I am still waiting on a few cosmetic parts (seats, sills, etc) that they had to order for my purchase to be behind me... in the meantime I've been loving my car!!

shrink The Roadster CPO inventory has been updated. There are currently 9 for sale. I find one rather interesting. There's a twilight blue Sport with all options and 40,300 miles with a list price of $106,100. Seems high but listed among the options is:
Battery Replacement Plan
I'm guessing the original owner prepaid for the battery replacement and it will transfer to the new owner?

Oct 23, 2013
jeremyz It seems like all the stuff they post to the CPO website is really expensive. For instance, they have a 1.5 Roadster listed on the CPO site at $77k that doesn't have many options. Last week, they had a similarly optioned car (radiant red instead of of Thunder Gray) not on the CPO site that they were asking $58k for.
Oct 23, 2013
hcsharp The battery replacement program goes with the car and transfers to the new owner. Most people paid $12,000 or $15,000 for it, depending on when they bought it. They don't say the new (replacement) battery will be new. They only say it will have 53 kWh of storage capacity. You can exercise the option as early as 5 years but you have to pay an additional $2,000 at that time to get one that early. If you can wait 9 years, they will pay you back $2,000.
- - - Updated - - -
It looks to me like prices have gone up lately. Apparently there's more demand now. Either that or the wave of people trading in for Model S has begun to pass.
Oct 23, 2013
shrink Prices have definitely gone up. The 2.0 I bought in 7/2013 and took delivery of in 8/2013 was less expensive, had fewer miles, and had a couple more options/accessories than the Thunder Gray 1.5 with 13,600 miles currently listed for $77K.
I guess a market correction has occurred.

Roadrunner13 Thanks for your reply on the other thread, I just caught onto this one.
It sure looks like the price went up, but it seems odd to me that they would raise prices as the summer season is over...
Convertible/sports car price's usually go down at this time of year and I would expect to still see trade-ins from people wishing to have their model S for winter.
Also, some expensive one (like the blue, #911) and cheaper ones have been on the site for quite some time now.
I'm really into getting one but I think I'll wait to see if they actually sell some cars in this price range before committing to one now!
