Let's see your white Model S part 1

  • Jan 15, 2015

    Hi all,

Recently took delivery my white p85 in December. I've been back and forth between wrapping the chrome accents vs leaving the car completely stock. If I decide to wrap the car, my main concern is the handles. If I wrap the chrome accents in black, I don't know if I should wrap the door handles in white, black or leave them chrome.

All white model S owners who have chrome accent wraps, let's see what you've got!

leftside: i wrapped mine with satin pearl white vinyl and wrapped the chrome window sidings with matte black vinyl. Here you go:

perfect timing on this thread .. Also been considering de chroming the car with Black wrap .. Also had wondered about wrapping the black solid plastic "radiator grill" in white and the chrome bits on that into black as well

sickfox: thanks for the pics. I actually really like the white satin on the handles. but i have the plain white. any suggestions for this color?

I save random pictures of Model Ss. Here's some of them and their owners.

gdavison - Search for Tsportline. They have a white car with white nosecone. I'm still not sure if i want the chrome pieces in the front nosecone wrapped in black. To me, it looks like a big hole in front of the car. we'll see.

Here's one from Logan. He matched the top part of the nosecone with the color of the car. Now it looks like it's part of the Frunk. I like this one better than the whole blacked out nose cone.
    hxvHXZ0.jpg

    xc0zze7.jpg

leftside - i have a pearl white and my door handles are satin pear white. the color is off by around 2%. It came out nice because it's a small piece and it's a subtle change in color that highlights the hidden door handles.

You have a white car and if you wrap it with white vinyl, it will completely blend in with the door. All you see is the outline of the door handle. if that's what you're aiming form, it will look really nice. When you go to a shop that does the wrap, ask for some swatches and some pics of their previous work. Or if you know photoshop  That will give you an idea of the look you're going for. Good luck!

Sickfox: you nailed it on the head. I wanted white vinyl for the blended look, but after seeing yours I do not know what I want anymore... I know that with a white car, my color options for highlighted handles are limited. I do not really like the black handles look either, so I'll most likely go with with white vinyl. Logan's car is beautiful, but it requires more money and time than willing to put into it

I've come across your username in these forums many times while doing my specific searches. I think we both took delivery of white P85s at a similar time, so I've been monitoring your activity in case you notice something before I do.

I had the same concerns over the LEDs, so I just ordered the Abstract Ocean LEDs.

I plan on dechroming within the next couple weeks, so I'll update with pics soon.

the nosecone is separated from the hood therefore it should not be the color of the hood, doesn't even look right either.

Nice! I may look into that. Is your color white or pearl white? I hear pearl is tough to match, I suppose since this is a whole piece it shouldn't be as big of an issue. Thanks again.

This is the reason I decided not to get a white car. It just doesn't look good with the chrome accents (not enough contrast). If I did have a white car, I would wrap the chrome either black or white... probably black to get the contrast. I have had other white cars but they all have had black accents and looked great.
Black Plastidip is supposed to work well or you can choose your favorite plastic wrap.

I wanted to wrap my MS in matte black or grey and also considered the 3M matte blue metallic, but after seeing your satin white MS thread I cant decide what I want to do..... One of the best looking Teslas on here Logan.
  • Jan 26, 2015
    logan
Originally the standard gloss white. I wanted to wrap the car in Satin Guard to both protect the paint and for the satin finish. But because I wanted the lower rocker panels to match, we would have to first sand down all the rocker panels, paint them, let the paint cure, and then wrap them in Satin Guard. So instead of dealing with that hassle, the car is wrapped in Satin Pearl White. Much simpler. :)

Thank you. I've seen one in the 3M Matte Blue Metallic; it's definitely beautiful!

    Joining the pearl white club...

Just ordered a Pearl White P85D. Checked every box on the order (except the jump seats).

I ordered Tan Interior with Carbon accents/ black headliner. Anyone have that combo; especially tan with carbon? I also ordered the exec seats. From looking at the pictures, the two tone seems to adds a lot of contrast to the "shapely" rear exec seats that I am hoping looks good.

Those of you that had your rocker panels/skirts painted white, have you had any issues with paint chipping or pealing off?
  • Mar 23, 2015
    REBroker
Those of you that had your bottom trim painted, can you tell me if they had to remove the parts or were they just painted in place by taping/covering the other areas? Reason I ask is because I got an estimate but the shop says they have to remove the front and back bumpers and the rear doors, in order to remove the bottom panels, then prime, sand and paint the parts and put everything back in. Obviously that's a lot of work and the estimate is more than double what Jerry paid in New York of all places (assuming a bit here, hope you don't mind :). The shop is reputable and they do a lot of work with Tesla and other high end cars.

In any case, your help is greatly appreciated as I really want to get this done sooner rather than later.
  • Mar 24, 2015
    yearofthedragon
@REBroker, my shop that I commissioned had to remove front apron (and front bumper), side skirts and rear bumper. The shop I worked with had experience with performing this modification, so they knew exactly what needed to be done. I confirmed with them removing the rear door is not required to get the rockers (side skirts off the car). However, they did notate that 1st time shops might have a tricky time getting the rockers off without removing the rear wheels.

  • Mar 24, 2015
    sickfox
@REBroker - Panels have to be removed in order for it to be done right. Shop around and look for paint shops that have experience with Teslas and compare prices. In my case, I asked for assistance in TMC (see original thread here) and one of the sponsors helped me out. After we picked the shop, I was told that there was going to be some extensive work to remove some of the panels.

Below are the before and after shots.

I paid $1200 for my paint job. Shop around and/or ask for help from sponsors like Tsportline or TMC members who have done the paint job. I suggest posting it it TMC > North America > Floria section. $2,700 seems high for me. When I was looking for shops, Tesla was not even on their database so a lot of them didn't want to take on the project and some just pretended that they have experience with our car. You can tell that they were fishing for info during the conversation.

Good luck and post pictures of your finished project. Looking forward for pictures.

Anyone willing to help with this? I'm still working on the saga of getting my lower trim painted body-color. I got a recommendation from Tsportline, awesome shop BTW, but pricing was along the same lines as the previous shop I had inquired with. So working with that previous shop, he sent the following message to me this morning:

"Good morning---I spoke to the owner of our company and he wants to work with you on price as discussed. Do you have access to what the other Tesla owner paid for their refinish work. Maybe a bill or estimate from the other shop.?
If we see what was done and how much then we will create a repair plan that matches the work and more importantly the price."

I'm sorry to post this off topic here but since we have a good concentration of white Tesla owners in this thread... did you do cquartz or opticoat on your white car? Was it worth it? White doesn't show imperfections as much as other colors, plus it won't show the shine as much either. I was waiting until after painting my trim to do it, but now I'm wondering if I should at all. Thanks!
  • May 6, 2015

I went with Cquartz finest on my pearl white 85D, looks great and I am very happy with the end result. Before investing in a coating Id do Xpel PPF on the whole front end, to me that is a more worthwhile purchase.
I hear the Opticoat leaves your tacky vs a smooth just waxed feeling.

I have a pearl white TMS and still went with Opticoat and have no regrets. It looks really stunning and the dirt comes of SO easy. It seems to stay or at least look clean much longer. I hand wash it and it's a breeze :)

    - - - Updated - - -

Your car looks great as always :) I live in Denmark, but my TMS is originally from Norway and it was my impression that Norwegian TMS' did not have the fog lights+led strips in the front (mine does not - it only has the cornering lights). Did your TMS have it stock or is it something you installed afterwards?

My personal preference is gray interior w/ black headliner or black interior w/ white (standard or alcantara) headliner. I do not like how the white headliner doesn't match either the tan or gray seats and personally, I'm not a fan of the tan. I would be ok with black interior w/ black headliner as well, especially if you have the pano. My neighbor bought a 85 w/ Autopilot, white exterior with gray seats and black headliner (no pano) and it is gorgeous! Breser and llavalle have posts on here about their cars with gray seats and black headliner, which makes me salivate even more!

    Jerry,

I love the red accents. Just enough. I think I am going to do that on mine as well. I am trying to figure out if i want to black out the chrome around the windows and if so, if I should do the chrome strip on the back. The other thought was black out the "T" logos on the nose and back and leave a little chrome on the back. I'm trying to find the perfect balance for me.

Yes but I don't like the feel of the plastidip. I'll probably get it painted instead. I have a great body shop that did the door handles and calipers for me.

That looks gorgeous. I'm seriously thinking of getting my calipers painted red. I like the Carbon Fiber overlay on your Tesla side indicator. Nice touch! You did a great job with your car!

Thanks! I got the carbon fiber turn signal and nose cone accents from RPMTESLA. He was awesome.

I wonder if I can wrap the chrome around the windows instead of plastidip. Should look nicer and not committed to painting the chrome.

I have read some threads were people say they have wrapped it, so at least we know it's possible. And thanks for the lead. Right now I have Roger's red decals for my center caps and the TESLA appliqu in the back - but I haven't applied either yet.

I am in the process of doing a complete chrome delete/black out right now with a friend who has expertise in wrapping. We are probably going on about 70 hours total now spread just over a week. We are very detailed so that could be why it's taking us so long, but I feel that all the curves and angles make this task very difficult. It's looking great and I'm very happy with it, but it's taking much more time than I anticipated. The hardest parts are the chrome just under the mirrors and the mirror skull caps. We started with the window trim and I think it's probably the easiest part. Even so, it probably took us 6 hours total for both sides.

A picture of my white 70D at the Hagerstown Supercharger. I had the roof rack installed before delivery. I love this color.

Stig O love the Tesla "T" logo in the headrests. Can you show us a closeup and share how you did it?

REBroker - Congrats! Your car looks muscular and lowered. Looks way better IMHO. Favorite shot is the rear!

Stig - I love the headrest logo! Hmmm.... maybe my next upgrade. Thanks for the inspiration.

Here is my Pearl White P85. I had originally wrapped all the chrome in satin white but it appeared to be more of an off-white in comparison to the paint, so I had it all re-wrapped in matte black. Rear Diffuser is wrapped in Carbon Fiber, as is the top of the nose cone. Then I added the Avant Garde 590s in Matte Black. Next is to paint the calipers yellow. Would also like to paint the rockers and front and rear trim in pearl white.

Look's like a rolling advertisement! Is that a private customers car? I never got the white center grill with horizontal chrome lines, doesn't look right.

Been thinking about how close I could get a custom plasti-dip color to match the pearl white for the black ground effects. I would think being so close to the ground the color match wouldn't need to be perfect. Not too interested in having a shop tear apart my car to paint the items.
