Winter Floor Mat Options? part 1

  • Aug 8, 2012
    PattyChuck
With all the threads talking about winter driving, snow tires, etc., it got me thinking... does anyone know if Tesla is going to offer winter floor mats? Salt collecting on the exterior of a car is one thing, but it will absolutely destroy carpet floor mats in just a few short years. I have always bought winter floor mats for my cars to swap out once the snow/salt comes. If Tesla isn't going to offer this, does anyone know of any after-market solutions that will fit the car?

I believe South Florida Author is going to be making some from rubber he hand milled from trees in Miami and rolled on the thighs of supermodels.

Kidding! I'm guessing most any rubber mat will fit--the only question is if it is anchored. I can look for an anchor point this weekend if someone doesn't have the answer before then.

I would love it if these guys made them:

    http://www.weathertech.com

I have them in my current car. They are custom formed molded "pans" that are kind of expensive, but unlike regular rubber mats where the dirty crud just rolls off and onto the carpet underneath, these really protect.

I think a set of cocomats would fit the character of the car. I have three sets in my vehicles from cocomats.com and they are substantial, attractive and comfortable, even with bare feet.

When I lived in Colorado, I swore by these mats. Teenage boys plus slushy|muddy ground - the mats handled it all. I'm sure they'll be able to find sizes that are close, someone may need to just send them the measurements or stop in one of the stores and make paper templates to send them.

Hope WeatherTech is more responsive to you guys. I know a bunch of us Leaf drivers sent in requests to WeatherTech to consider making mats for our cars and none of us ever heard back from them.

Pretty sure they laser scan to get the 3d dimensions. Someone in Illinois needs to donate their car for an hour. I would definitely be interested in these if we could get them made. I have used Huskyliners in the past for my trucks and they survived years of abuse. "OEM" (Toyota) weather mats traditionally have been less successful.

I expect my Model S to be delivered with rubber floor mats, as all other cars are in Norway. Carpet mats are useless here, we use rubber floor mats year round. When I got my Leaf last year, it was delivered with (anchored) rubber floor mats only.

I'm sure you're right - I was thinking that the paper templates would help them identify if they had mats for another make/model that would work.

Well, as luck would have it, their factory is only 25 minutes from the Tesla Store in Oak Brook. Nonetheless, I would be more than happy to lend them my Model S for a day if it included a set of free mats

I put in a request at WeatherTech for All-Weather Mats for the Model S. Am I correct that Model S carpets are always black, regardless of the interior color?
  • Oct 1, 2012
    shokunin
Yes, the carpet is always black, including the frunk and trunk. The color choice is simply that of the leather and leather-like surfaces, below the lacewood/obeche/CF trim on the dash, armrests, back seats, front seats, and doors.

I asked this question on the Lloyd's thread, but but I don't think as many people are reading that one. I'm planning on getting rubber mats, and but I don't know what all the pieces refer to. There are obviously the front & 2nd row, a frunk and trunk (without jumpseats), but there is also a rectangular one that, by it's description, sounds like it may go in the rear as well. So where exactly does that fit?

I will be getting jump seats; do you think I can just cut or fold the large trunk mat myself, is the smaller rectangle piece for where the kids' feet will go, or is it better just to wait until the jump seats arrive and Lloyd's has a design for it? (although I'd prefer to have it all in one order for shipping efficiencies) .
  • Nov 29, 2012
    JakeP
I believe that last piece is the one that fits in the footwell where the kids' feet would be, if they were seated in the jump seats. I think I saw that described early on in the Lloyd's thread, maybe posted by Artsci?
  • Nov 29, 2012
    KBF
They call it a "small deck mat", with a note under saying, "cargo well - no jump seats". It's cryptic to me. Artsci won't have his S until spring, colinb also won't get his car until after me. I think I've read all the threads pertaining to this and haven't seen any pics of Lloyd's mats in the trunk... Although it is difficult to keep up with the sheer volume of info produced these days on TMC!

I have a couple of days before I need to order (yes, I'm a sucker for limited time offers...)

    - - - Updated - - -

Thanks, ChadS. Do you think the size would be sufficient to keep the floor clean with kids' snow boots?
  • Nov 30, 2012
    ChadS
I like the Lloyd's mats in general; but I was disappointed with the one for the footwell. I think kid's snow boots would be hitting the sides of the footwell, and the Lloyd's mat doesn't even completely cover what I might consider the bottom (hard to say exactly where the bottom ends as it curves in there). Personally, I'd want more coverage.

At my local O'Rielly's auto shop, for $10 they had a roll of black auto carpeting that matches pretty well. I think it's 3' by 6', and could probably be cut to fit in there nicely. It's not waterproof though; water from snow boots will get through it, but I think it would do a pretty good job of stopping the dirt.

Weathertech is located in Bolingbrook, IL. I've heard from good sources that they have been in repeatedly to measure Model S at the Oak Brook, IL showroom, and should soon have mats available.

I thought the same thing. That sure looks like a WeatherTech design. Wonder why Tesla only has a frunk version? Seems an odd place to start. (I'm a huge fan of WeatherTech mats. Have them in all my cars and they're great).

Agree that the frunk is an odd place to start. Need the interior more than anything else first then the back (particularly if you have jump seats).

make sense if you consider that it is probably the easiest one to design and make. The interior would be the hardest.

Spoke to WeatherTech yesterday. They acknowledged that they have measured the Model S, and that mats are "in engineering" with availability listed as "7 weeks", though "it could be sooner, so keep checking website". They also indicated that they update their website frequently, so Tesla should show up there promptly when available.

I emailed WeatherTech over the weekend and got a reply as below. I suggest we all put in a request - note Tesla is not in the pull-down on the request form itself so tick the "Check here if you do not see your vehicle" and type it in. If we all do it, I expect they'll make it more of a priority and speed their production plans.

Can't hurt - and it's what their customer support person requested. "7 weeks" could be like "check's in the mail"...
  • Feb 7, 2013
    Ceilidh

FWIW: WeatherTech told me "in 1-2 months" repeatedly over a 12-14 month period for availability of mats for the new Sienna when it first came out. I hope they have a better time frame for the Model S, but in my case the "check's in the mail" syndrome was quite accurate.

For that reason, I got the Lloyd mats as a temporary solution as I have little faith that the WT mats will be out soon but YMMV. I also like their mats the best. Wish they had a more accurate track record in terms of availability info.

    Cheers

The Lloyd's rubber mats are very stinky - I recommend getting them well ahead of time and airing out in your garage, for weeks if possible. They are only getting to a non-stinky stage now for me after 4+ weeks of airing and 4+ weeks in the car. I have developed a habit of leaving the windows open in the car overnight (heated garage) to help the smell dissipate.

I got the interior mats for the front and back (they come together anyway) and for the trunk. Really happy with them; the grey goes well with the black leather and the piano black trim and brightens up the interior too. The fit's very good all around.

The Tesla-provided front ones were very wimpy and are now relegated to a dark corner of the garage.

A couple more pics (I just needed an excuse to go to the car again ;)):

As a general rule, I would recommend folks hold off on going too nuts with getting accessories before the car arrives. As it makes it harder to wait and fills up your garage. ;)

But, speaking first hand I was very uncomfortable with the rear carpet being unprotected when giving a number of rides in the first week. So much so that I got a temporary rear matt ($12) as a stopgap and ordered Lloyd's immediately.

Thus, adjusted advice: definitely consider getting a rear floor matt before your car arrives if you plan on getting one. And...
... this suggests another reason to order early: you can let the airing process begin before the car arrives.

I just opened my Lloyds rubber mats, and frankly they weren't very stinky. But I'll let the air out anyway (and flatten out as they were shipped rolled up). They look like a good simple rubber mat, but won't hold a ton of slow/slush ice as they don't have edges. Better suited for wet shoes than a lot of melting stuff on your boots. That said, they look good and simple, each circle is recessed so they will certainly hold some water. I don't have a car to put them in yet... but here are pics. I ordered the whole set...frunk...front seats, rear seat, rear trunk, lower rear trunk.

My only complaint with the tesla mats vs the others I've had is that they feel more like thick plastic than rubber. Otherwise, good fit, they go higher up the walls of the floor and I've already had a chance to muddy them up.

FYI, just received notice from weather tech that their product is available. Looked at it online, and it is clearly same mat tesla is selling with weathertech vs. tesla name on it. So, as most of us suspected, Tesla OEM'd from weather tech.

PS, Tesla version $50 less expensive too.

    Yup. Got the same update:

2013 Tesla Model S | WeatherTech FloorLiner - car floor mats liner, floor tray protects and lines the floor of truck and SUV carpeting from mud, snow, water and dirt | WeatherTech.com

But, there seem to be some subtle differences though; the WeatherTech version has a small hump-like section in the middle of the rear mat while the Tesla version is flat. Tesla's is obviously cheaper at $200 vs WeatherTech's $250.

I'm pretty sure that the photo on the WeatherTech website is a generic photo, not the actual mat for the Model S.

And there were never any suspicions about WeatherTech being the OEM, since MacNeil Automotive is clearly written on the back of the Tesla mats...
  • Sep 25, 2013

    1) McNeill Automotive is the parent company for Weathertech. They are ABSOLUTELY weathertech mats. You just confirmed.
    2) There IS a generic photo if you just select 2012 or 2013 model S. But, if you select front matts only, there is a picture that is unambiguously the same mat I bought from Tesla except with Weathertech logo instead of Tesla.
