My experience with buying an inventory car part 1

  • Dec 25, 2013
    Adden Lee
I've been in the market for a Model S for a few months. I kept going back and forth from buying used or buying new. S60 vs S85 vs P85. Textile vs leather. Solid roof vs Pano...(I have never used my sunroof on any of my cars)....black vs white...coil vs air....cash or finance

I was also interested in several cars for sale on here as well. Got very close to buying a S85 from the East Coast. Buying used however, you do not qualify for any tax benefits. Here in CA it is 10K (7.5K Fed +2.5K State). I had to figure this with shipping as well and every time someone was always willing to pay more than what I was willing to offer.

This is the deal I got for an inventory car. I pick up next week. I hope it'll help someone who might be on the fence and also provide someone with an alternative they never considered. If you are open to colors and options and don't mind some extra mileage then buying an inventory car might be the way to go. For those that don't know: an inventory car includes showroom, demo and loaner vehicles for sale and is available immediately. The down side obviously is that you get what you get. Usually these are P85s that are well equipped. Sometimes you might find a S85.

I asked for both a S85 and P85 in black or white. The options I had to have was tech, 19" rims and tires and rear seats. I didn't care about anything else although I did prefer coils over air.

The S85s go fast and the ones available were hardly discounted at all since they were brand new. At most 1-2k discount. One was no discount but was available now.

I found a Silver P85 with 7k miles. Fully loaded including performance leather, rear seats, twin chargers, 21"s, everything except pano roof. MSRP 109k discount 14.5k. Sale price 94.5K. Tax deductions 10K. Final 84.5K (of course I still have to pay tax and license on top of that).

The beauty of buying an inventory car is that if it was manufactured before 8/13 price hike then you would get premium lighting, leather, alcantara, extended leather and fog lights as stock options and rear seats, sound for about 1k less than today. If this car is built today it will cost more than 117K but you do get new options like parking sensors which I wanted but was told it can't be retrofitted due to costs to Tesla. They were offering it in the beginning but now have discontinued. I honestly think all luxury vehicles should come with parking sensors and blind spot monitoring as standard.

I was waiting to jump on this car but couldn't reserve until this week. I didn't want to take delivery this year since I want my tax benefits for next year. Sadly, this car was sold. =(

So this is the car I ended up with. P85 fully loaded including pano roof, twin chargers, 21", performance leather with 3.5k miles. MSRP 110-2250 credit for coils. MSRP 108K discount 10k. Sale price 98k-10k tax benefits=88k for a P85. This is the price of a S85 new depending on options. If you get a S85 fully equipped it gets to 100k very easily.

No wait, warranty starts on the day I pick up, qualify for tax benefits, discounted and about the same price for a S85. I am a happy camper although I'm trying to swap my 21" for 19" at the moment and I didn't end up with either black or white. Can't win them all. Msrp today would be 119,220. 21k savings + tax benefits.

I have heard about someone who found a car with 16k discount and Tesla gave them credit for swapping 21" and rear seats. Overall got the car for around 25k discount without the tax benefits included. This was an insane deal. Around 7k better than mine although I'm sure this one had higher mileage.

Good luck everyone if you are in the market for an inventory car. They do go quick. I hope you found this helpful. Merry Christmas.

Congrats on the new ride! I ran the same route and love it. Was going to try to do the pick up at the factory thing until they explained that I would need to pay Calif sales tax. So we bought the local car we test test drove. Just like you it was a much cheaper deal, got things I would not have ordered, and it was much faster. Great experience.

If you already have ordered a vehicle, do you know if Tesla will give you the $2500 down payment as a credit for an inventory vehicle?

It will be hard if ur car went into production. I was told it was possible to switch my deposit to an inventory vehicle. Call ur rep asap. Good luck.

I took delivery of a P85+ inventory car yesterday.

Every single option (except parking sensors and red calipers), arrived within 1 week (from Fremont, CA) and got a smokin' deal (~ $25k off price on website).

    Couldn't be happier.

I'm surprised more folks aren't going for the inventory cars and I'm surprised there are any left that are at the old pricing... deals still to be had it sounds like! we are very happy with our P85+. it had been a loaner but was in immaculate condition.

Extremely rare. Someone did mention driving a 60 as a loaner. Most likely an "orphaned" car (buyer must have bailed out after the car entered production).

I am very interested in this as well, would appreciate any information on finding inventory cars for sale.

Is it simply placing a call to Tesla orders dept under contact on their website?

    Thank you!

I had initially confirmed my order in october but told them to postpone it till later on. I finally told Tesla to get my car in production end of November and was told the wait would be till late Feb. I said OK. Being impatient and wanting my car fast, I decided to call my local sales rep and asked him if they had anything similar in configuration that was a demo. He looked up while I was on phone and said they had a demo car at the factory with almost similar config and with 185 miles. I decided to jump on it and am waiting to pick it up. I was scheduled for pick up tomorrow but got a call saying car isn't ready and will now be picking it up on Monday. Can't wait!

These prices seem too good to be true. No such deals here in Canada. Not even close. Max we can get off is $2,000 which is a joke. May as well order what you want.

    I also bought a loaner/demo

MSRP approx $106k got $12k off so after discount price was $94k. For me the savings meant getting a demo/loaner P85 instead of a new S85. After 2 weeks I have zero regrets absolutely love the car and glad I purchased a P85.

Process: I went into my local tesla store and sat with the rep and went car by car in inventory in their system. They have this info online and can screen depending on options. Be warned they sell fast. I was considering a local demo P85. They would not hold it as they said they sell fast and do not hold demos. I said let me go home run the numbers to see if it makes sense. Got a call in 15 minutes the car sold. They found a better demo for me, had almost all the options I wanted and I jumped on it.

For the negatives: back tires about half worn, some wear on the black nappa leather seat and bolsters, some minor road rash on paint. I figured my cost was $500 for wear of the tires. FYI, i had them rotate tires and realign which they did at no extra cost. I had a local guy touch up and paint the worn spots on the leather for $100 looks brand new. Happy to send before and after pics. Costs are a no brainier given the $12k savings.

I'm very very happy I bought a demo.

Yeah just contact your local Tesla showroom and let the rep know you are interested in an inventory car. Tell them your colors and options and they will find cars for you. They do go quick and in my case I had to pick up the car within 7 days of reservation. It'll be a good idea to set up financing beforehand. If you are financing, Alliant Credit Union is doing 1.49% for up to 72 months with 100 cash bonus. All you have to do is donate $10 to their charity and you can become a member. If you wait too long the car will sell so make sure you know what you want and be ready to buy. The 2500 deposit is not refundable on inventory cars. They also recondition the car before you pick up.

Cars usually have a 1% discount for every month in service and $1 for every mile after 50. You should shoot for around 20-25k discount from ordering online. Good luck!

I was going for a S85 with just a few upgrades (tech package being the main one) so the inventory cars were all significantly higher priced because they tend to have every available option. For someone who is considering a fully loaded car this is worth considering.

Used Cars can be a good deal as well for noncalifornians. I got my P85 with just under 12K miles with every option except Rear seats for just over 85K. Included was a HPWC, Twin charger, Full high end tint and full body XPEL. Also had wheel and tire protection plan included for free. This same car new is over $117. Savings of over 32K. Also, I negotiated with the buyer to ship to me for free.

The car looks and Drives perfect. In addition I know the guy who had it babied it to death but with loaners you know people abused it like a rental. I guess you just have to be lucky and vigilant looking for a deal.

About the comment do we get credit for 2500 if we switch from custom car to inventory cars. I asked my sales advisor at Dania Beach. She said that if you buy inventory car, your deposit gets credit towards inventory car. Thinking about it, it makes sense. This makes their inventory fresh as your production car will join the inventory.

Just a hunch/speculation. Bet the best deals are had in last 7-10 days before end of each quarter when TM is trying to put best sales numbers forward.

They are also doing away with delivery fees if you purchase an inventory by today. Sorry I just found out today. So if you ordered one before today you'll get it factored in during pick up.

From NYC? I saw someone posted on another board that he/she was offered an $85k 60 with around 6k miles for $59k (including $7500 tax rebate). I have been waiting for the Model X but sales tax, excise tax, insurance, etc is factored in a slightly used S with similar range could be $30k or so less. I live in the northeast and have small kids so the Model X is more appealing BUT we are talking 30-35% less....decisions decisions
  • Jan 1, 2014
    772
That sounds like a pretty good deal. The best my rep in Ohio gave me is $4k off a $96k sticker S85... they said they don't sell the 60s in their inventory either.
  • Jan 1, 2014
    MassX1317
This is is the email they said they received from their sales rep:

"We just go a 60kWh inventory car in that is well optioned out and with a $19k discount and the $7,500 federal tax credit the final price works about to be $59k before tax. Please let me know if this interests you since it will go in the next day or so."

My wife told me at $59k it seemed like a no brainer so it's nice to see she is on the bandwagon, too.
  • Jan 1, 2014

If you want a '60' you might want to grab that car. I have been told that many of the 'test drive' and service center 'loaners' are going to be mostly P85 or P85+ in the future. The S 85 and S60 will be harder to come by in the future in the form of discounted 'used' vehicles.
  • Jan 1, 2014
    MassX1317

I think a 60 would be fine for our use. Normal daily driving ranges from 35 miles round trip to work to about 100 miles to get the kids to everywhere they need to be in a given day. Ideally for the original MSRP of $85k I would prefer an S85, tech package, metallic paint and parking sensors. If I could find that car for $59k I would be in a Tesla tomorrow.
  • Jan 1, 2014
    AlMc
good luck with your decision. The supercharger network is coming slowly to the Northeast. I am originally from Chelmsford, MA.. Still have family there. I know my brother and a couple of his friends in the Portland, Maine area are anxiously waiting for the Kittery Outlet and Bangor, ME SC to open before they purchase.
  • Jan 1, 2014
    MassX1317
The lack of a supercharger network is part of the reason why I would be ok with a 60. It would be difficult to go on road trips in New England with either car. We would continue to use one of our ICEs for travel and use the Tesla as the daily driver. If we were to get an 85 it would be in hopes of an improved network in the future.

I am really anxious for Tesla to start reselling trade-ins because we don't need all the extras and don't mind being a second owner to save 30-35%. I've been lurking on this website for a year but had to jump in this thread in hopes of more people posting there experiences buying inventory vehicles.
  • Jan 1, 2014

It has been discussed that upgrading the battery from a 60 to an 85 will be possible (for a price). I really believe that the best prices on used vehicles through TM (where you can retain the $7,500 tax credit which you will lose with a private second hand sale) is at the end of the quarter. Most people seem pleased with their 'used' model Ss. Contact the Natick service center and get on a list for purchase of loaners.

Unless you got this quote again directly, I doubt the car is still available... I mean the original post was from Dec 10 or something. Depending on the color combo/options I'd strongly consider this offer for a 60. The exact car I'm looking at is 81k before tax credits. This works out to about 67k before tax credits and sounds like it has more options.

For those that have gone through this process, do the reps just offer cars from their local inventory or do they search the whole network nationwide? As for signing onto a list at a service center - is that better than just asking my rep to notify me for any cars that come in at my price range? Or did you do both? Thanks in advance.

    MassX1317
I don't think it's still there, I brought it up because I think a member in this thread may have purchased it. It just made me realize that great deals are still available on these loaners for those not looking for the $100k+ models. Good luck with your search!

For me, buying a service loaner definitely made a performance model possible. It also meant what would cost me $110k+ today (without rebates) cost me a little over $91 in reality... all I had to compromise on was exterior color and having 5200 miles.. :)
  • Jan 1, 2014
    772
Ah, thanks. Sounds like you are looking for something similar, too. I also hope we'll see a few more of these pop up, but like I said my rep in Ohio told me they don't sell their 60s... I asked him to contact me if they do put them for sale anyway.

I lucked out in buying a service car as well. The custom order I was going to place was a gray P85 with the tech package, smart air suspension, parking sensors and 21" turbine wheels. For about $5k more, I got a P85+ with the options above plus the alcantara headliner, matching yacht floor, lacewood trim, leather performance seats, premium interior lighting, spoiler, rear facing seats, panoramic roof and the ultra high fidelity sound. I didn't really want some of these but it was well worth paying a little bit more than what I originally wanted. Plus the service loaner car had only 3400 miles and was located in the same city I live in (Austin, TX). Another bonus was I was able to get the car in a few days and take advantage of the federal tax credit in March 2014 in lieu of waiting until March 2015 (if I had went custom). Well worth it indeed!! It's an option that they don't advertise as much but the folks I dealt with at the store in Austin suggested it was a good option for me. I'm 2+ weeks strong as a proud Tesla owner!

    Howdy all,

I wanted to add my experience to this thread... Was turned on to option of the inventory models by Owner Advisor Sha (AKA awesome dude) at the Fashion Island Newport Beach store. Rather than ordering a S85 with baseline add-ons as I originally planned, he found me a P85 all the way out in Massachusetts, made in May '13, with ~8k miles on board. It was pretty much decked out with the following:

Panoramic Roof - Black Performance Leather Seats - Carbon Fiber Dcor - Carbon Fiber Spoiler - Tesla Black Brake Calipers - Supercharger Enabled
Tech Package - Smart Air Suspension - Extended Nappa Leather Trim - Alcantara Headliner - Rear Facing Seats - Premium Interior Lighting

Configuration price was $88k. Order placed on 12/14, vehicle delivered in Costa Mesa Service Center on 12/28. Scheduled pick-up time was 11am, but I received the dreaded call that there was a delay, because the delivery arrived later than expected, and new pick-up time was around 4-5pm or possibly the following monday. I live close so stopped by to check things out around noon, and Service Center Manager Ben (AKA the other awesome dude) explained the situation, apologized for the inconvenience, and helped to set me up with the already mounted 21" Grey Turbines, rather than swapping out for the 19" standards I had planned on. There was some curb rash on the 21's, but he is sending a guy out to my home smooth out and polish them up for me. I drove home that night in my Blue P85.

I have not stopped smiling all week... It's been a great New Year! I feel so lucky to have found this option for the inventory models, and I am incredibly proud to be a part of this team!

    MassX1317
    Congrats on a beautiful car!

Looks like if you ordered that car today, it would cost $119,200.

Does the $88k include any tax incentives?
  • Jan 4, 2014
    Adden Lee
Most likely doesn't include the 10k tax incentives for CA. Awesome deal. P85 for 78k!
  • Jan 5, 2014
    albiefett
Thanks MassX... and Adden is correct.

This will qualify for both the $7500 Tax Credit plus $2500 CA Clean Air Rebate.

Still my most expensive vehicle purchase, ever...

but with some of these inventory models it's almost too good a deal to pass up!
  • Jan 5, 2014
    MassX1317
Woah, what a deal! I have been reading about some people getting $25-30k off sticker and others only get $1 off per mile, why the inconsistencies?

I'm not sure where you got that idea. I received over $3700 off an 85kWh (non-performance) Model S with 1300 km (800 miles) on it. In Canada. The time from "I think I'll ask about inventory cars" to car-in-driveway: 5 days. And that included a weekend.

I'm very happy with the car! It's funny, I obsessed over colours and options a year ago when I was going to order, but now am happy for someone else to have made the choice for me. The demo car had the rear-facing seats, but they just removed them and took away the $2800 (!) that would have been charged for them. The car was manufactured in September, I ordered and received it just before Christmas. At the time I think there were nearly a dozen demo cars available in Canada. Call your nearest service centre...

I was completely dependent on my Owner Advisor in the shop. When I went in on 12/14, I got the feeling they really wanted to move inventory before the end of the year, as previously mentioned on this thread, and covered the cost of shipping if I was able to purchse before end of year (quarter). My vehicle, coincidentally enough, was initially located in Massachusetts, and was shipped out to me in California, for delivery 2 weeks later. I would go into your closest shop and speak to the Advisors personally, so they get to know you and what you are looking for. Im sure new models pop up all the time, and if one your looking for comes up, you wanna be next in line.

For me it was alot of timing, and luck... i went into the shop to look t a blue, and left the shop having ordered one! the fortunate story of my life.

I've had a bit of a whirlwind day today (Sunday). On Saturday I emailed my Owner Advisor with some questions about ordering as we were getting ready to pull the trigger on an order; we agreed she would phone me Sunday morning. Sat evening my wife and I decided on colour (grey) and all the other musts, while still thinking about whether/when we should order.

Sun the OA phones, we start talking, and she casually mentions an inventory car they have on the lot. So I ask what colour, what options -- grey our favourite, and already including all the options we wanted except carbon fibre, plus 3 more, plus(minus) a small showroom discount, plus guaranteed reduction of $5,000 government incentive grant (it goes away March 31 unless extended), PLUS I GET THE CAR WEDNESDAY. Definition of no-brainer.

So instead of ordering normally, waiting 3 months and biting my nails to see if Tesla can deliver the car before the grant expires, I get a better car in the exact colour I wanted for $2,000 less, or $7,000 less counting the grant, and I get it like right now. Not a big discount like earlier posts but for me just the not waiting and immediate incentive grant were enough. I don't know the car's numbers yet except it was built 11/2013 and has 30 whole kilometres on the odometer, so my signature requires more updating.

So although I don't have the car yet, I'm certain I'll be happy with it. I'm certainly happy with the inventory car ordering process, like everyone else on this thread!

Time for bed (2am). Probably not time for sleep.

Has anyone bought a Model S S85 loaner? We may have settled for the S60 for $59k if we knew about it sooner but an S85 with same options for $10k more would have been perfect!

We are looking to stay at $78k or less, $70.5k including federal credit.

If we can't get a super deal like then we will probably just wait for the X.

If I had to guess, I would say that they don't want to sell them to quickly, as for the most part, the inventory cars are their test drive cars. They need to keep them around for a bit to drive further sales.

Well... since you insist... Been driving for a week and just cannot... cannot cannot believe how natural an electric motor is compared to That Which Shall Not Be Named. What an unbelievable machine. And after reading people's experiences on the Forum for the past 1.5 years, I *finally* get in my gut the sheer joy of driving a Model S. Even my test drive in December didn't prepare me, really, for everyday use. I am blown away.

Re getting an inventory car and the very recent change in sales policy, I think it's a good business decision by Tesla and I realize I have so many horseshoes so far up there's nails in my teeth.

as mentioned in another thread that i created a while back, I ended up purchasing an inventory car.

specs are in my sig, brand new would cost me 120k (without 7.5k rebate, which I can't claim anyway as I'm not an American resident), if I was buying it with the 10600mi and being a Dec '12 car, it would've been $90k.

Throw a bit of minor accident damage into the mix (all repaired under insurance by Tesla approved body shop), and drop that down to $74k.

Needless to say, I'll be picking it up in 11 days. :D

Loaners were suppose to be for owners of current MS cars and not for people to jump the que. We then were to have the option to buy the car if wee liked it....

Because the loaners are open to everyone for purchase our service centre does not have any availible When you take your car in.

Good job tesla, piss off the owners!

Calling BS? as in you don't believe the posters in this thread? Or you don't agree with Tesla's policy on selling loaners?

Yes, Loaners are to be for owners of current Model Ses, but once they trade their P85 in for a P85+, who can buy that P85? you can't just limit it to S60/S85 owners, it'd make no financial sense to keep it for such a limited target audience.

The Loaner Sales policy has been changed now, as mentioned in another thread (Tesla making changes to inventory car purchase process)

Agreed, they need to keep their loaners for the service centers, but the idea is also to keep the loaner fleet very fresh (and in this case, selling them all off last year, paved the way for 2014 loaners), and keep them desirable.

I'm set up to buy a P85+ inventory car at the end of the week. It comes configured with the rear-facing seats, and I asked them to be removed, which they said they can do, but they are no longer offering *any* credit for them.. so I told them to leave them in. I don't know if this is just a local policy or from HQ, but just be aware. For a $2800 credit, I sure as hell would take them out, but for ZERO credit, leave them in. The excuse they gave me was that the rear end of the MS is "beefed up" for the rear seats, and even if they take the seats themselves out, it still did cost them more in production than the cost of the removable parts. Yeah, I know it sounds like a BS exuse, but I'm going to ask again when I go to close the deal.

Yes they also told me they would take them out and credit me the difference. But that was early last month. Do you no what the total is going to be for the car? I'm going tomorrow morning to see what's left in the inventory after they made it so the loners would stay for 90 days now. I may just wait till march when they will come available.

Yeah, they said it was a "new" policy and that they are no longer offering rebates for removal of the seats.

I know about what the total is -- they are going to adjust it when I close the deal to adjust for any additional mileage or time.

I'm not sure how they count the 1% discount per month -- is it whole months from the in-service date? Calendar months? Pro-rated for partial months? Who knows.

Cars that come equipped with the 3rd row also have a beefed up crash barrier built in to protect the 3rd row from rear impacts (boron bar? Can't quite remember the details). So it's not BS that it costs more than just the seats and removal of the seats and a full credit may not cover the cost of the reinforcement.

FWIW, even if you get no credit for it, you may still want to have the seats removed if you have no use for them because they do take up cargo space in the rear.

Thanks. Good to know it's not all BS.

We have two adult kids, so there's now little need for the extra storage space in the back (it's already pretty huge back there). Although I do like that square duffle bag they sell to fit perfectly in that spot.

I doubt I'd use the jump seats for more than demo rides for friends (and their young kids). Also for resale value. So I don't want to remove them just for the space, unless I can still get that $2800 credit.

Wow, I made it just in time then! I bought an inventory P85+ last week (delivery this Friday). It also came with the rear seats and they gave me a $1,500 credit for removing them. Now I'm glad I didn't wait with signing the paperwork. They must have stopped the credit just days later!

Btw, as for the negativity earlier in the thread, my inventory car is 5 months old, 5,500 miles. Old enough that it needs to be sold.

I haven't singed the final paperwork yet (just the pre-purchase agreement), but I am also due to get my car on Friday or early next week. I'm still going to try to talk them into giving me a credit for seat removal.

I asked at the same location as you and was told no tire swaps, no more seat removal for credit.

Also there were only 2 cars under $92k, both had no discount. Must have been sales that fell through.

Yes, they told me the same thing regarding wheel swaps. My car has the silver 21s, and I prefer the grey 21s. But no go on that.

I noticed the same thing about inventory cars. Most of them are P85+ and $100K+. On the other hand, they have plenty of those and the older ones are right at $100K which is a sweet deal for a loaded P85+. About $20K off.

How do you know which location I went to?

I may live in New England, but the store I went to was not.

    :)

But it's good to hear they have consistent policies.

My inventory car was made in May of last year and I picked it up exactly a month ago with ~8,000 miles on it... So about 7 months old.

Does that mean I can feel a little less guilty about screwing over all the previous owners that needed loaners? :)

Nope! Don't you know, Tesla should keep all the old cars FOREVER! What? that car is 10 years old and breaking down? Nope! Don't sell it! Think of the loaner program!!! /sarcasm

While I don't think I would like getting an ICE loaner (cause then I would have to pay for gas... bleh), I get why they are selling them off. At the same time, now that we are well into the new year (and they are not pushing for end of quarter numbers...) they shouldn't replace out an old car until they have a new one to replace. Or swap out half of the fleet wait until full again, and then swap out the other half. Would help make everyone happy.

Hopefully we will see what this "new service center plan" is that they are supposed to be announcing soon, and it will alleviate any of those concerns.

What is the "new service center plan"?
  • Jan 29, 2014

I don't know. Noone does. In Tesla we trust...

There was a statement made a while back (I don't think it was "official"), that said they were going to be making a change on service which was supposed to be better for the customer. We will see if this materializes or pans out. I can't put my finger on where I saw this off hand...

The statement was in the Q3 letter to shareholders:

Wonder if you could take the seats out and sell them to make up for whatever credit you might have received under the old policy?
  • Jan 30, 2014
    HankLloydRight
Who would I sell them to? There are structural differences in the back hatch specifically for the rear seats... it's not like they can be installed in any MS (as far as I understand). So the only people with cars that can have them installed are people who already have them, or the very few people who ordered an Inventory car, had the seats removed for a credit, but then changed their minds. I'm sure that group has zero members!

There's a guy over in the TM forums that's wanting to buy rear seats. His car came with the reinforcements, but no seat. AFAIK he has not found any seats yet, so check with him.

When I got my inventory car last week the Tesla guy said inventory cars are drying up because there's a new policy that a loaner/demo has to be in service at least 3 months before it can be sold as inventory.

Edit: Her's the link Want to buy: Rear facing seats | Forums | Tesla Motors

Early production cars came with the reinforcements built-in even if the rear seats weren't installed.

I'm one of those folks too (my VIN is low 5000s and before cut-off so my car came built with reinforcements), although I'm not ready to buy the rear-facing seats yet since my kids won't be big enough for them for a little while. But eventually I will post a want add when they are and see what comes of it.

These seats are truly MONEY. Every single parent that sees them during kiddie drop off practically drools all over them. Plus they are handy for separating feuding kids
