SeanTek I measured the back of my Model S, and it is around 38.5" x 72-75" (depending on where you measure, and how far forward the front seats are). This is about the size of a twin bed. So, I was wondering: has anyone tried to put a mattress (air mattress or otherwise) in the Model S? How does it work and feel? What are the best products? I am thinking that an air mattress with a 12V DC pump would work best.
When I laid down in the back with the back seats down, it felt like it could be doable. However, if one's head is placed in the front, filling for the footwell right before the front seats is absolutely necessary.
I read some posts about people putting full size mattresses in the Model S, but I think they were referring to deflated mattresses, not inflated/usable mattresses in the car itself. I do not see a way to fit a full size mattress in the car to be able to sleep on it.

brianman Thanks for the measurements! I could have used these when burning some time at Fred Meyer this weekend (away from my juicing vehicle).

ChadS I slept in mine at a campground the other night. I can report that 1" thick egg-carton foam is NOT thick enough to keep you from noticing the rise where the seats fold over. Also, the top of the folded-over seats curve forward/down, so your pillow constantly threatens to fall (hence the need for "filling"). It never did, though.
It was nice to use the phone to vent and close the sunroof. I may try to find some thick heavy foam and cut it to the size of the cargo area, to make it the same height as the seats.
I think a regular mattress might be too thick, and put you too close to the hatch for comfort. But I am sure there are some foam or air mattresses that will work well.

Grendal A twin mattress is 38" x 75". You can often also get all foam mattresses cut to the size you want. You can expect to pay around $400 minimum for one of those. A basic 6" twin foam mattress can be found for as little as $100.
Jun 11, 2013
SeanTek Have you actually tried this? It says 70" by 41". But I measured the narrowest part as 38.5" (for those who have child seats, I measured from the wall where one side hook attaches to the other side hook, inclusive of the hooks). Maybe this makes it a nice, snug fit when fully inflated in-place, but it might be difficult to insert or remove. And for those of us who are longer than 70", our heads (or feet) will be hanging off the edge...

From time to time, Home Depot gets special buys on twin sized foam pads for $14.97. The foam is about 4" thick. We have two up above in the garage now. I'll get one down and see if it fits.... (EDIT) tomorrow evening... there's too much stuff to maneuver to get them down right now.

efxjim I have camped several time in the S and use a Yoga mat. It fits one person just fine. As for the step between the seats and trunk I made a tapered bolster out of "etha" foam. It is a dense foam that has very little compression. The only thing I wish the S had is an always on setting for the climate control system "camping mode". It was below freezing at my campsite. I had the car plugged in so battery life was not an issue.

BriansTesla Been thinking about this for a while so I made a rough CAD drawing of the space.

I think there is a rubbermaid storage bin that you could pack with necessaries and use two or three to take up the space behind the front seats and support the foot of the bed.
I have been trying to find an inflatable mattress to take up the 3" drop but so far I have only been able to find one that could be folded in half to fit.
![]()
I didn't really want to use foam since it takes up so much space when not being used but I tried out some pieces I had around from a Vanagon Westy.

It is better than the queen, but not perfect. In particular, the "feature" of having a separately inflated pocket for the headrest is actually a drawback. Because the headrest is connected but separately inflated, it bends at the joint. This means that it goes down when it hangs over the backseat, making it uncomfortable and unusable. Additionally, the inflation valves are on the side of the mattress, which is inconvenient placement if you are using the 12V lighter to power an air pump.
- - - Updated - - -
Finally, here are pictures of my preferred mattress: the Coleman Single High QuickBed Airbed Twin (with 4D Battery Pump Combo), part # 2000010290.

There is a little bit of "give" in that the width of the mattress does not fit exactly snugly against the sides, but it is extremely close--quite acceptable in fact. One point better than the SUV QuickBed is that because there is only one air pocket, the head area will hold its shape if you put your head on the front side. The inflation valve is also well-positioned for easy filling with a 12V air pump.
I bought this one (the twin 4D combo) over the standard one because I liked the darker color. It is not black--it is dark brown--but it matches the interior decor of my MS better. This one is a keeper.
Jun 25, 2013
SCW-Greg From Home Depot, special buy, $14.95.
Measures 31" x 72". Would be best to buy a second piece and cut in half to fit up to the 3" lip of the folded down seat backs. That would make for a level sleeping experience, without a kink in your mattress/back.
Pardon the bad photography.

Good questions.
The dark brown bottom twin mattress is only sold in the combo pack with the 4D battery pump. My interior is black; the extra cost of the pump was justified for color coordination . Anyway, I sold the 4D pump on ebay for $12.90 so it turned out to be close enough price-wise.
The 12V QuickPump is good. There are red and black options (for those who care about color coordination), but the black one is older (but same model) and therefore harder to find.
I also have the Ozark Trail 12V Powered Pump. It is less than $10 and performs just as well as the Coleman one. I actually prefer it because it is considerably smaller, so it fits in the crevices much more easily.

K5ING Thanks for the mattress testing and suggestions. I now know how can afford a Model S. Just sell the house and live in it. I know of a good spot down by the river.
As for a weight for the seat to keep the A/C or heat on... years ago a friend of mine left the bowling alley and tossed his ball & bag into the passenger seat of his 1974 Ford Torino and tried to leave, but his car wouldn't start. He did everything he could think of, but no-go. Finally had it towed to the Ford dealer and they couldn't figure it out either. After about 4 days, he went to get some things out of it, including the bowling ball/bag. Funny thing...it started right up after he left. 1974 was one of the few years (only year?) with a seatbelt interlock to prevent the car from starting if someone was sitting in either front seat and the belt wasn't fastened.
I'm guessing a bowling ball would do the trick in a Tesla too, ya' think?

In folded stage it will fit nicely in the trunk, leaving access to the under-the-floor compartment. scottm Here's a few shots of camping last weekend.
Showing an air mattress from Costco for $45... came with a 12V pump takes 4 D cells. Didn't pump the mattress completely full, so it squishes around the wheel wells. With two adults on it, the pressure builds up and provides good support. The mattress did not squirt out of position and just stayed wedged in there between the wheels.
I made a cardboard "ramp" that fills the difference in height gap created behind the folded seats and trunk floor. The ramp is cardboard folded around and around in layers of successively longer spans, ending up with dimensions 3" high tapering down to zero over a 21" distance that is long enough but not so long as to obscure the removable trunk deck lid over the deeper trunk. The width of the ramp is 38" to fit between the wheel wells perfectly snug. Being under the mattress, it does not get crushed, is lightweight, and to transport it I just flip it up and keep it behind the seats when they're in the upright position.
Slid the front seats nearly all the way forward. Put two 69L Rubbermaid containers with lids on the rear seat floors to fill the void, and rest mattress on top of those. Worked perfect. These are $10 each.
Other photos show the adapter I made to go from from TT-30 "RV" outlet (120VAC 30AMP) to NEMA 14-50. Have to dial down the amps to 24A. Filled me to 90% overnight, perfect. In the morning I did an experiment "go until you blow" to see how much I could pull from the TT-30 outlet. It let me pull a full 30A for several minutes maintaining 120V without dropping voltage... so I probably could have cheated all night but didn't want to risk popping the breaker and losing out completely on a charge.
Super nice just hitting the heater on whenever temps dropped too much... We learned the best way to do this is just leave the climate controls on and set the way you want, then open and shut the rear door. It runs for half an hour then stops.
We made window covers from stiff box board, cut to shape (traced from windows with doors open) for privacy on the sides, and used a traditional front windshield sun protector for that and just left the rear glass an pano glass unblocked.

RyanT We've camped in the back of our model S about a half dozen times in remote areas on the mountain roads of Oregon and WA. We set the climate control at 68-70 and it uses 15-30 miles of range for the night(absolutely love it). We were using a standard inflatable twin mattress. Two problems 1. It sat too high at 9" thick, not leaving much headroom. 2. When one person moves it makes noise, shifts around, and wakes the other person up.
Last weekend we used the Exped Megamat Duo. It's wide for the car but it creases where it's too wide and worked well. It was much more comfortable. If you're looking to spend more ($300) for a better night sleep I would recommend it!

mochouinard First, I have to say that I'm 6'4" 250lbs ! My goal is to maybe fit 2 in there ! I know, I'm pushing it, but I want to give it a try !
Here is 2 mattress I got a Canadian tire for under 30$
They both integrated some kind of integrated pillow which feel actually nice as is. It also have an integrated foot pump... I did try it and work on both of them but you got to figure out how it work, and the twin version doesn't fill very hard, but it felt ok in the car. I bought an 12volt air pump though !
![]()
This one is size double. It was ok, but the border does rise up making sleeping in not a great position I think... I haven't tried it being 2 in it... Maybe I'll have a chance to have a woman to test it out with me later this week
![]()
This one was a size Twin... It actually less larged than advertised... I hope it was 2,3 inch larger... For a single user, this is fine ! It might become my permanent bed I keep in the car just in case, but the double could also be useful.
So 50$ later(plus the air pump), I still don't have a viable option... Though the first one will be useful to test to see if I should investt anything more. At the same time, it will come handy if I have some visit someday, or even camping. I had in mind to use it to watch the perseide this week (if the sky clear up !)
Aug 11, 2015
Ingineer For my bed, I first drop in a 2x4 that spans across the rear compartment hatch and rests long side vertical on the frame rails. Then I have a piece of plywood that rests on this 2x4 and runs up to the seat back lip so that a level platform is created. This also allows for additional storage underneath the plywood for things like my reflectix window shades (all windows + Pano). Then throw the mattress in and with the reflectix shades, it's totally blacked out and a perfect little sleeping room. Next time I set it up, I'll post pix.
The only problem is I cannot figure out how to keep the HVAC on while charging. No matter what I try, it goes off after :30. I don't have an iOS device, so I can't use the camping mode in the remote S app, and in any event, I've already been to one camp site were there was no cell service, so it wouldn't have worked anyway.
I'd love an official camping mode from Tesla so I didn't have to hack something together. Funny that you can use the neutral + parking brake trick when NOT plugged in, but once plugged in when there would be no battery drain, it shuts off. Annoying!

mspohr Why do people insist in sleeping inside the car? Seems claustrophobic to me.
What do they do with all of the stuff they normally pack inside the car?
We just take a tent.

Aug 11, 2015
Ingineer Tent is great sometimes, but if you are urban camping, or it's really cold/hot/noisy/rainy/windy, then the tent is not so good. For instance when on a long road trip, you can pull into any Wal-Mart and camp in their parking lot for free. Plus if you just want to pull off the road and get a few hours rest, you don't want to set-up/tear-down the tent.

Aug 11, 2015
ohmman Weight in the front seat doesn't work when plugged in? And I'm guessing the last thing you want to do while sleeping is leave the driver's door only half-latched.
Aug 11, 2015
Nappe There have been a few threads on the topic of the camping mode. Bjrn Nyland has a video with a rather comprehensive description on how to keep HVAC on all night.
Tesla Model S: Camper Mode - YouTube
He leaves the car in neutral to keep the car in drive mode, which keeps the heat on, and he walks you through locking the car, setting the brake, etc. The downside of this method is that you can't charge while you sleep, which is no problem if you are not far from a supercharger where you can charge the next day.
Aug 11, 2015
Ingineer Here's what doesn't work for keeping HVAC on while charging:
1. Weight in front seat, even if cycling.
2. Keeping driver's door cracked.
3. Keeping all doors cracked. (or even open all the way)
4. Keeping hatch open.
5. Putting in Neutral + parking brake, then connecting charge cable. (Doesn't charge until car is in park)
6. Keeping frunk open.
Seems the only way to do this is for the mobile app to renew the climate on command every 30 minutes. (Or via Mobile S, Visible Tesla, Etc.) Problem is if you're in an area w/ no cell coverage.
Aug 12, 2015
mknox I had originally thought that would work, but discovered it doesn't the other day. I had my doors open working on the car (hard wiring my dash cam in) when all of a sudden the music stopped, the HVAC shut down and all the screens went blank. I panicked thinking something had gone wrong with the car, but closing, then re-opening the doors brought it all back to life. Not sure how long it takes for this to happen, but my guess is about a half an hour.
Aug 12, 2015
mknox The other disadvantage is that in jurisdictions with mandatory DRLs, you can't shut them off. I have discovered that if the car is in Park and the DRLs are on, you can manually switch to Parking Lights, then Off and the DRLs will shut down, but they'll come back on as soon as you put the car in a "gear", including Neutral.

Dec 21, 2015
Science->Truth Nice to see this thread active again with new comments and suggestions. Every air mattress I have had leaks air after a couple uses. No matter how pricey. And, they always make noise and shift air when one rolls over. And the plastic is often not comfortable when it's warm. So, I got a regular 100% cotton fill twin size futon, in black. Overstock.com for just under $100. a piece of 4 inch cut to size foam underneath the futon along the seat back "drop off" to fix the lump, and it's super comfortable. Use black sheets as well, and it really blends in with the interior. Like others, some plastic bins behind front seats raise that area for pillows. And window sunblocks all around for complete privacy and shielding from street lights, etc.
Dec 21, 2015
RyanT What window sunblocks do you use? I've used fabric before, basically I roll down the window a little bit but the fabric in and roll the window up to secure it in place. For front privacy you can stretch a blanket between the front seat headrests and adjust the seats so the headrests go all the way up the ceiling securing it in place.
Dec 21, 2015
musicious Do you guys have an issue with sleeping on a slope since the seats are at an incline when folded down? What do you think about getting a "wedge pillow" to help make it level? Or is that what the recent poster meant when he said he cut a 4inch foam to fit around a lump?Amazon.com: wedge pillow
Also I recommend getting a quality sleep mask instead of worrying about window shades, I once bought like 20 kinds with good reviews and only like 4 were good, I can find amazon links of the goods ones if you guys need a recommendation (usually $20-30)
Dec 23, 2015
Science->Truth On the slope: FYI, the futon I got is 8 inch thick Cotton, and I bought a $10 hunk of 3 inch thick foam, at exact width so it wedges btw the wheels, and about two feet long from the drop off going toward the rear (just to smooth the sudden drop off behind folded rear seats). Sleeping with feet (at the rear) lower than head (behind front seat backs) at a very slight slope is very comfortable. IF you really want to sleep with head at rear, then you need larger piece of thicker foam for the entire area from drop off at rear edge of back seat to very rear of cargo area. Head lower than feet is rarely comfortable, except a small minority of people.

vitaliy Thank you for the measurements!
I found this mattress on Amazon ALPS Mountaineering Rechargeable Air Bed, and in theory Twin (39" x 74") should be perfect fit. Price is ok and includes car charger. But I'm not sure if 2 people can sleep comfortably on a Twin size mattress?
Will look something like this

robby I'd stay away from that model. The pump runs off an internal battery, and the adapter provides only enough current to slowly charge the battery (not enough to run the pump). This means if your battery is uncharged you'll have to wait six hours to inflate your mattress. Not fun if you park at night and want to go to sleep.
edit: I see two people claim otherwise in the product Q&A. Trust me, they are wrong. I have this same model pump and it is a big problem. This reviewer noticed it, too: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2A5QDS3MF0I70/ref=cm_cr_pr_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B007X098QC

vitaliy Thank you for such a valuable advice!
If battery is fully charged, then how many times it can inflate/deflate the mattress ?
Feb 14, 2016
robby I don't think I've ever tried to run more than one full inflate and one full deflate cycle on a single charge. It does slow down a little at the end, so I probably wouldn't chance it. We have the queen version though; the twin might fare a little better due to its smaller volume. If you are in a pinch, you can also deflate it by hand. If you do that I'm sure you could get two full inflations out of it.
Feb 15, 2016
doug Are you sure the "slow down" is actually from the battery running out and not just the increased load due to the mostly full mattress air pressure?
I don't know anything about this product, but having to charge the pump shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as you know that. You can be charging it while you're on the road.

rhumbliner Ok, probably a dumb question, but if my wife and I decide to sleep in the back and it's a cold & rainy night and we have everything closed, is the Model S cabin so airtight that I need to crack a window despite the rain pouring in? Would it be possible to consume all the oxygen in one night?
May sound crazy but it's that kind of question that would keep me up all night.

TaoJones You'll be fine except that there will likely be condensation all over the place. I'd vent the pano, presuming you will have a pano, and see how it goes. Absent that, you can set the AC to 1 with the energy-saving and range modes on at some ambient temperature. Have a look for threads concerning "camping mode", since without some adjustments, the car will shut off after 30 minutes at rest.
Have done it both ways during countless nights of snoozing in the chariot, and haven't died of asphyxiation yet. However, in case they've taken steps to button up the car in preparation for bioweapons defense mode, do consider testing the venting or AC at setting 1 as well.

musicious If you aren't charging then you can enable e-brake in the controls while in Neutral and it will keep air on, or if you are charging (thus need to be in park) I believe there is an app that will send a signal every so often to wake up the car as a camping mode

SeanTek Three years later, I regret to report that a burglar stole my Coleman Single High QuickBed Airbed Twin, that was the basis of my awesome mobile Tesla command center/hotel.(The airbed was not stolen from inside the Tesla, although three weeks later my Model S was regrettably broken into. A topic for another day.)
The Coleman held up well over time and got many uses both in the car and out. For those who have leak problems, may I suggest putting the airbed on a credit card that gives you an extended warranty? Last month (May 15, 2016) Citibank overhauled their card benefits; they now offer a flat 24-month extended warranty on all purchases on the card.
I am back in the market for airbed solutions. The 2013 one (part #2000010290) is discontinued. Coleman has updated models, and I also see several other solutions on this thread. What's the verdict these days?

TaoJones Condolences for yer loss(es).
Home Depot Diamond mats - closed cell foam, cut to fit the aft hatch area with the rear seats folded down. Doubled up, these provide an ultra-firm but not awful surface, onto which the sleeping bag of your choice can reside. A Thermarest or similar self-inflating sleeping pad can provide extra support for the sensitive.
A good pillow is a must, beyond that, although even a crappy pillow can be serviceable if paired with a massaging/vibrating horseshoe-shaped travel pillow. Great for SC snoozes, the latter has come in very handy for working out neck and shoulder soreness during long trips.
And thanks for the Citicard tip - I keep forgetting which card offers what with regard to extended warranties.

Drik Solutions Sorry to hear about that.
I purchased this one off Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005U5J1GY/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_QWGAxb1YVT2PZ
For under $50 shipped, it's hard to beat. It's only a twin, but fits well. I'd still entertain buying a slightly larger one if available but everything I have seen would be to big. I prefer the blow up over foam because it stores so much easier.
Thanks Erik

buckerine Love this thread. Sleeping in my forthcoming S is probably one of the things I'm most looking forward to. Question though for the experienced: where do you guys take a shower (assuming you do...) ? Are you typically parking in an RV park?

taminatorv What a fun thread! I'll add my two cents to this. I bought a bunk bed and foam mattress from Ikea for my daughter a couple of years ago. Since the top bunk is rarely slept on, we bought the cheapie foam mattress for it. It's a fairly comfortable twin that fits the dimensions for the Model S well and isn't too thick, less than four inches. You could probably roll it up and compress it too.

Drik Solutions Hello,
Here are some photos of the mattress I purchased ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005U5J1GY/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_QWGAxb1YVT2PZ ).
The good:
- Rolls into a nice tight roll for easy storage.
- Once inflated there is only about an inch or so on each side of the mattress. So it fits quite well.
- Quite comfortable.
- At $50, its at a great price point.
- Reversible pump both inflates and deflates the mattress.
The bad:
- Comes battery powered. I would have liked a pump that plugs into the 12 volt (you can buy one separately). It takes 4 D batteries, I opted for rechargeable batteries from eneloop.
Things to keep in mind with any mattress in the Model S:
- Right behind the rear seats, the angle of the mattress is at 13 degrees, in the middle it is angled at 11 degrees, and at the hatch it is roughly 7 degrees. This is with no weight on it. So you will be sleeping at an incline if you don't put anything down in the trunk (such as a foam pad or something). I don't mind sleeping at an angle, but it's something to keep in mind.
- I move the front seats back so they are as close to the mattress as possible. That gives pillows something to prop against. I have seen others put coolers/bags between the front and rear seats which gave more room for pillows. If you are over 6 feet, its going to be tight.
Thanks Erik
