What Are Your Daily Driver Plans While Awaiting the Model 3? part 1

  • Apr 2, 2016
    thefuturenow
Seemingly both fortuitously and unfortunately, my Cadillac CTS was wrecked by another driver's carelessness just prior to the Model 3 pre-orders going live. While I have put my deposit down on the Model 3 and am very excitingly awaiting it whilst dividing my day between learning about Tesla and watching videos from Model S/X owners :p, my options are limited now. Buying a safe, reliable car only to sell it when I get my Model 3 would be too costly yet whatever I can justify leasing my heart won't be into as it will just feel like a gap vehicle to the Model 3 so either way I won't be too happy spending money on a vehicle until I have my Model 3 in my driveway. Then, I'll be ecstatic to make payments ;).

I assume most of you will just keep your current vehicle, some are coming out of leases, and others probably have cars about to die. What are you doing with your daily driver situation?

Got a 3.5 year old Camry Hybrid that should easily last a few more years.

Cannot speak more highly of the car. Loads of power, refinement and fantastic fuel economy (plus getting 1000km a tank is great) but feels like 100 years old compared to the images I've seen of the Model 3.

I should credit it with actually me getting interested in full EVs.

Enjoying a now used Tesla that is under warranty and charging it daily.

Looking forward to a more efficient Model 3 with the largest battery possible.

Gotta make my 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid Last, Its never had any problems beyond its battery, which got replaced in 2015 under warranty. But I am most defiantly ready for a change of pace.

I'll be driving my 2014 Volt until my 3 comes. It has 34k on it now after 1.5 years; it will probably be well over 100k in the 2018/2019 timeframe.

The Volt has been amazing, but my commute is 80 miles round trip with zero at work charging. So until this year, no full EVs had enough range to be a daily driver. Looking forward to the Tesla a lot.

I have a VW e-Golf whose lease expires in the first week of March 2018.

Considering the amount of pre-orders so far, I'll probably have long turned it in and will be back to driving my ISE Honda S2000 until the M3 gets delivered.

My 2007 Prius has about 345,000 miles on it. I'm hoping I can nurse another 80,000 miles out of it to make it to 2018. My mechanic thinks it can make it to 500,000 without much trouble. I just had the struts changed, so here's hoping it makes it!

Keep babying my 2002 Camry with 268K miles on it. It's still running like new. I just need about 2 more years out of it.

    That's the plan...

Perfect storm for me. Bought a Prius C in summer of 2012 that will be fulled paid off next summer. By the time my 3 is delivered my daughter is likely to (finally) need a car so I'll give it to her. If not I'll just sell it as the Prius do seem to retain value rather well (although more so when gas is expensive).

Figure I'll start making 3 "payments" (read: banking extra cash) as soon as the Prius is paid off, should be enough to pay for an extra feature or two (or more depending on when delivery occurs).

I'm actually "stuck" with my '15 LEAF for 1.5 more years as I was stupid and got a 3 year lease. That car was great when my 2x week commute to Denver was about 62 miles and there was an EVSE waiting for me on the other end. However, my company moved offices and now the drive is 75 miles with no opportunity for charging anywhere near.

So now I'm driving our '16 F150 150 miles RT twice a week while the LEAF has been reduced to local only duty. I still really like the car, it's just now the range issue has really hit and it's a big deal. The truck was only meant for camping trips and local duty.

Probably going to try to limp through the rest of this year driving the truck more and then get a CPO S at the end of the year. Not ideal, but I considered getting a small, cheap gasmobile to drive as a stopgap for two years and couldn't force myself to look at them for more than a few minutes. After driving electric for almost 2 years, they look just terrible.

Plan to use the CO tax rebate from the CPO to pay the residual on the LEAF and give it to the kids. After I get the 3, the S can be my wife's daily short trip driver and the truck can just be used for truck stuff.

This is my current, complicated plan.

I specifically leased a Leaf for the wait, which goes back to Nissan in June 2018. We'll drive that, along with our paid off 2012 Mazda 5 until the model 3 arrives, at which point we will probably use both our reservations to have our daily drivers and put the Mazda into "storage" (using it only for hauling or dirty jobs)

I'm going to have to figure something out. My A3 TDi lease expires in Aug-Sep of '17... I was 4th in line at my store ordered 2 and plan to spec them out pretty well. I'm hoping i'll get them early in the queue but either way i'll need to maybe rent something until I get it :(

I'll keep driving my 2011 Volvo V60 until I get a Model 3 probably around late 2019. The wait doesn't bother me much because the Volvo is a great car and I'll miss its cargo space once it's gone.

My '15 Macan Turbo....great car that I bought January of 2015 because I was too scared to go EV and get the Model S. However, as great as it is, I still have remorse for not getting the S. Therefore, I have reserved a Model 3 and will be selling the Macan the first part of 2018 so I have cash in hand for the 3!

First post back here since camp-out madness... man have I got a lot to catch up on :(
So I thought I'd start with an easy one.
Frau Schwartz, my faithful 2007 A4 2.0T Quattro, will need to get me through until my 3 arrives. She's generally doing well, needing only a bit of paintwork around the edges to keep her looking fresh and an RS4 clutch upgrade, stock one is struggling with the mods I've done recently. Hoping she goes to a good home when the time comes to say goodbye.

P.S. Shout out and welcome to zammboss, who was right beside me, MTL_HABS1909 and Electric_Mouse in line and was great company. His vlog of the event was very cool, nice drone footage, and I especially love the running comentary on the Chris-Farley-like character that took over the scene around 4:00 am on Thursday morning. You couldn't make that up...

My second 3 order is for Brazil, to replace my five-year-old BMW. I'll keep it going until the 3. However, because I travel often, the car sits unused for months at a time. With my S, no problem, just leave it plugged in. With the BMW I had to replace the fuel pump at 14,000 km because it gummed up from gasoline evaporation. At 9,000 the battery failed. I have since bought a trifle charger to solve the latter issue, but ICE vehicles do not like to sit fir extended periods, BEV just want a few electrons now and again.

Last year, the HV battery on my 15-year-old Gen 1 Prius died and a feeling of dread/despair came over me since the Model 3 back then was at least three years away and I didn't want to have to get another car in the interim. I bit the bullet and had the battery replaced, so the Prius should last me until my baby comes in.

Sorry about your situation. I do not know if "another driver's carelessness" is an indication from within your family or a stranger on the road. If it's a stranger on the road, make their insurance pay for it and let it cover for a used car that will get you by.

As for me, I'm keeping my daily driver because it's a fun sub-compact sports car to drive around that's paid off long ago, and it's 10 years old now. It isn't slow, but it isn't fast. But fast enough to get me through traffic/slow drivers. I still have some mods on the car to do for performance and safety. I'll retire the car when I can afford to buy the next generation Roadster or whatever sports car Tesla will make. Going forward, any sports car I will get will be electric. Gasoline powered cars are overrated now. I was looking at an Acura NSX but now, eh, that car isn't worth it anymore. I want to spend less time maintaining a car and spend more time driving it.

Assuming you still wish to drive electric, and depending on your daily commute, I'd recommend that you look at the Chevy Volt.
Its a dependable semi-electric car with no range issues, it should serve you well over the life of its reasonably economical 3-year lease. You will shed no tears when its time to give it up at the end of its term when your Model 3 is ready for your acceptance.

If you want to go a bit upscale, the BMW i3 or i3/Rex might work out, as the leases can be in your favor, depending on the dealer.

If you want to go inexpensive, and if they are available in your area, and their "81 mile" (i.e., 55-60 mile) range still works for you, the Fiat 500E dealers (at least here in Los Angeles) are giving them away on 3-year leases for $59.00 a month (!). Not as zippy, not as big, not as crashworthy, but fun and cheap.

    -or-

You could swing the other way as you know this will be your last fling with gasoline.
Live your next 3 years as if they are your last 3 years.
    Porsche. There is no substitute.
When you give it up, you will at least have fond memories of it, and tell your grandchildren of the adventures you had in the last gasoline car you ever owned.
And I doubt you would cry over having to let go of a Kia Rio.

You may get a big chunk off your residual at the end of your lease which would make purchasing your LEAF very attractive. They're already knocking up to $7500 off for cars ending around now. In a few months that should improve. By next year when mine is up, I expect they'll almost be giving them away to keep them off the lots.

I just bought out the lease of our 2013 Leaf S which was going to end in August. The car has 29,000 miles and I got it for $8500 out the door. I thought that was a great deal for buying a car I know from day #1 that had a 14k residual value. I figure the entire car cost me $12K to own for 3 years and we'll probably keep it past the receiving the M3 as well. The car has all 12 battery bars and is in great shape.

Perhaps you'll get a better deal next year when the competition is stiffer.

I'm making do with my "ol' reliable", a 2008 (v1.5) Tesla Roadster. :)

It's 7+ years old now, has 105K+ miles on it, and the battery capacity has dropped as expected (it doesn't have the newer technology Lithium Ion cells in it like a Model S/3/X does). I've got a 3.0 Battery Upgrade for it on order, so it'll have a 300+ mile range once I get the new battery - by the end of summer, if I'm lucky. It's still in excellent shape, but having a Model 3 to also drive would allow me to keep from piling the miles on just the Roadster. Being able to use the Superchargers, which the Roadster can't, will make long-distance trips in the Model 3 very nice.

I stood in line on 3/31 to get my Model 3 reservation at my local Tesla Store, not knowing how many people would really show up. I was blown away by the astounding number of people that were standing there with me, waiting for their chance to reserve one too. My sincere thanks go out to all of you that are getting a Tesla Model 3. You're involved in making a positive change in this world.

No Dave... Elon says we need to thank YOU for being an early adopter and helping to complete step 1 of the master plan.
    So thanks.

I will be happy to turn in my 2014 base v6 mustang for my model 3...it might be paid off by then. My only fear is how I will miss manual transmission...but I can't wait to try.
I was 45th (by my own personal count) out of over 200 in line on the 31st and I am so glad I decided to go earlier than originally planned.....I'll likely be right around that $42k mark as my limit on upgrades.

A distracted driver running the red. I'm actually looking into an i3, but it's much more similar to the Model 3 than I anticipated. Almost takes some of the hype away since the interior of the i3 right now is potentially nicer, plus the model I'm looking at has premium features and tech at an attractive price.

Keeping my shitbox 2006 Mustang... if it lasts that long. Plastic pieces are breaking left and right, who knows when something major will decide to fail. So glad this era is coming to a close but at least I only have a 12 total commute so it's not like it last to last too many more miles.

Once the tesla comes, my wife will use it for her 70 mile round trip commute and I'll switch over to the 4Runner.

Here's hoping Tesla makes announces a motorcycle this decade. Zero hasn't won me over and there's not much else out there.

    Me too.

The Fit or our Prius (v)agon will be sold, but both are really excellent cars.

I'll keep driving my 2014 BRZ up until we take delivery. My fiancee will drive her 2012 Nissan Rogue. Once the Model 3 arrives, she'll start dailying it and I'll drive the Rogue in bad weather and the BRZ in nice. Once the Rogue kicks the bucket, I'll start dailying the Model 3 and she'll get something new (Model Y?).

She's not anti-EV, but is dubious. So, my master plan is to use the Model 3 to warm her up to the idea of an EV since she'll be using it for commuting daily (about 60 miles), but won't have to ever stop for fuel, will be perfectly quiet, all the tech she could ever want, more than ideal performance, and AutoPilot for days with traffic or, frankly, whenever.

Keep driving my 11-year old 2005 Prius another 3 years. It has 136,000 miles on it and if my only other car, a `91 Ford Escort, could make it to 190,000 miles in 14.5 years, a Prius can do it, too.

I drove a 2003 Nissan 350Z when my Tesla Roadster was delivered. Before the Roadster, I'd only ever owned and driven cars with manual trannys. I worried that I, too, would miss manual shifting. But, then you realize that with the flat torque curve of an electric motor, which gives full torque output from zero revs, *any* transmission is pretty much pointless, and also gets in the way of the fun driving experience. No more missed shifts, or if you're used to an auto, no more poor shifting behavior.

Wife and I will continue to jockey for the Model S keys; loser gets the Hyundai SUV until Model3 gets here. I bought the S because I drove it....didn't need it, but after driving it my Jaguar XF was a steam engine. The Jag and wife's GTI became garage queens. Loved those cars and sold them with no regrets; thanks Elon et al.

My '07 Prius has 209,000 more miles than yours. Those cars are built like tanks! :D

I'll keep my 2013 TDI Passat until then. With the scandal, it's no going anywhere soon. The wife's 2010 Prius may have to go when the T3 is ready.
