    Graham,

The San Ramon Charger works great, I charged ther last week. 233V @ 70A-faster than my home HPC (208V). The site is accessible 24/7.

So this weekend, I did check out the San Ramon Charging station. It is excellent.

    3522704318_779ebd3022_d.jpg

As MDR mentioned it is 233V/70Amps - It is very close to the freeway, and very close to lots of shopping/food. However, it not in the shopping center parking, it is in a big conference center parking lot next to a bunch of CNG filling stations - so at least on the weekends there seems to be little worry of some bozo parking in the EV charging spot.

I plugged in and charged for about 45 minutes while I walked across the street to a coffee shop to get a drink and a snack. Turns out that I would have had enough range to take my entire trip without the charging stop, but it was nice to get that peace of mind.

There are now four public Tesla chargers installed and powered within about 18 miles from my house. :) We've got Dixon, Vacaville, Davis and Woodland operational.

I have not heard of the Vacaville one -- where is that located? evchargernews makes no mention...

    For completeness:

    Woodland, CA
Woodland Gateway Shopping Center located at southeast of the interchange of I-5 at CR102 (use Maxwell Road entrance into the center). The charging station is an open, public lot, located in the southwest corner of the shopping center, east of InN-Out Burger

So of the Tesla chargers in Northern California:

San Ramon and Woodland are both full chargers at 70 amp. But:
Vacaville and Dixon are 40 / 32 amp (it would be nice if they labeled them as such on the charger itself).

Do we know yet about the circuit in Davis?

    Have I missed any?

It would be nice to have one in the Bay Area (although I suppose San Ramon is if you squint).

I wonder if we can convince Tesla to put a couple of 24 hour public chargers in their parking lot at Menlo Park (and/or San Carlos offices).

PS. And thanks for the detail, ChargeIt!

Charged up today at the Woodland charger while grabbing lunch at the In-n-Out.

208v @70amps (Too bad it is not 240v like San Ramon).

The Woodland charger is in a great location. Pretty close to Sacramento, I-5 and I-80. The charger itself is in the middle of the parking lot which has shops all around the perimeter. This means that any individual shop is close walking distance, but the charger is not storefront which might make it a target for a non-EV driver.

There is a Target, Best Buy and Costco there too although I didn't have time to shop there today. There are a bunch of other new unoccupied shops to be coming soon too. Overall a nice experience.

RAV4 EV was charging in the adjacent spot when I first got there. Possibly folsomev, or EVNut?

ChargeIt! alerted me to some new Tesla chargers in Fairfield that I checked out while driving through the area this afternoon.

They are in a parking structure in the Fairfield Transportation Center which is just off the W. Texas exit off of I-80 Here.

They are in a big parking structure off of "Cadenasso Dr" Sort of next to a Taco Bell. The entrance looks like this (sorry about the thumb... stupid iPhone...)
    3604921465_a8042726e4_d.jpg

Once inside, take an immediate right -- there are 2 Tesla chargers labeled at 208v, 40 amps. I tested the leftmost one at 40 amps and it did work.
    3604921381_9d3ebfc393_d.jpg

There was a very helpful security guard there. He was quite tickled that a Tesla had come in to use the charger and wanted me to take lots of pictures of him next to my car, using his cell phone:

Graham, I like the way this is covered.

In one single page for each charger there should be

What type of connections are available (SPI, LPI, Avcon, 110V, 240V, Tesla, J11772. and updated reports if they are working or not and who to call for location and servicing.

    A map to the site
    GPS coordinates
    Thomas Bro page(?)
    Address, phone of charger
A description of where it is,
Images of the street entrance, the building and the charger to give context.
Distance to next 3 nearest chargers

Downloadable to handheld and car NAV system.

I just make lists. I don't have any idea how to do this.

Edit to Add: Actual avalible amperage of NEMA connector

I have had thoughts about this. EVCN & EVCM (News and Maps) is well established and has been working for many years. But technology (GPS etc) has moved on. Admin support is ... (not intending to offend or criticize) ... is low budget.

From what I've heard so far the EVCN/EVCM sites are being updated with the Tesla station functionality. That's better than nothing for now. THANK YOU TO ALL CONTRIBUTORS !

Glad you mentioned J1772 ... the finalization of that standard may be a month away ... and ... once that's UL approved (another year?) THEN we are talking about a MAJOR expansion of stations and functionality (more EVs too across the US).

Like vfx ... no idea HOW to do it ... but NOW is the best time to prepare a new more feature filled site accessible from iPhones and such with "emergency .. nearby" search function for someone quickly needing an alternative ("I am ICE'd" or the "station is down" where to now ?).

So ... keep updating EVCN, but start a whole new database and user interface.

Any EAA members here ? Any info on whether that's been discussed or is in preparation ?

Alternative: built-in with the EV's NAV system. But for someone planning a trip ahead of time also integrate with google (or yahoo or whatever) mapping ... so keep that piece of the functionality and expand features.

Another "pie in the sky" thought - someday it would be great to show available charge spots so it could know in near realtime if someone was already parked & charging at your planned destination. Without this it is analogous to a GPS that shows you a quick route, but doesn't take into account traffic. If the GPS is tied in with traffic and charging updates it could show you the actual quickest route to an available charge spot, not just the shortest distance to a possibly in use charge spot.

By the way, someday you might get price sensitive and sort charge spots by costs to use. e.g., Will it be cheaper to drive the extra distance to the Coulomb, or just use the Better Place nearby?
  • Jun 8, 2009
    ChargeIt!
"pie in the sky" --- YES!! I like it ... the real-time reality, not the "pie"

P.S.: But then you'd also have to add "be gone in 30 minutes" (or limit each EVs use).

P.P.S.: And you'd have to know if there's already a "waiter" for that spot ...

We are getting trickier now ... what if 40 Roadsters decide to move their rally to Las Vegas and Barstow is "full" of waiters ?
  • Jun 8, 2009

No offence taken. :) The budget isn't just low. It is, in fact, negative. 100% volunteer effort - the bulk of which comes from one full-time volunteer. And countless hours have gone into keeping it up. It remains THE most complete and up-to-date resource of its kind. When I can just ask my GPS to guide me to the nearest (automatically and regularly updated list) charger, then we'll be off to the races.

Yes, they're all being added as we find them. They were sure tough to keep track of there when they started sprouting up all over the place overnight!

I agree! Who funds this, though?

    Yup.

Not so much. Money and time are the two limiting factors.

    What about Google money?

Even better, Have Google build it.

    We know that:

Google gave Plug in America $100K (who gave $60K to college race teams)

    Google leaders drive Tesla Roadsters.

Google has Google.org that has a plug-in vehicle locator as part of their RechargeIt.org division.

Google has a fleet of plug in vehicles that run on solar panels

Google has a site called "maps".

How much would it cost to pay a team to build the network we are describing?
How much to pay the volunteers a small stipend to keep it up? Of course right away it could be sprinkled with Google ads. Later, as more EV car and charger products come out they could buy ads on a very targeted audience.

    I know a guy...

You can already ask your GPS for the nearest charger. GPS files are available on request. Automatically and regularly updated is a different story, however. For true automatic updating, we need network-enabled chargers. People are working on that.....

EVCM/EVCN have been leaders for years in GPS technology. Have you checked the "Precisifier," for instance?

With some limitations, EVCN/EVCM work on iPhones via Safari right now. We plan to do some tweaks to improve stability and functionality. It is possible to submit real-time reports from the charging site via iPhone, if you follow the correct steps.

EVCN/EVCM are not, strictly speaking, EAA sites. They are owned and operated by yours truly, independent of EAA, even though I am an EAA member.

Nothing is going on right now with regard to major rewrite, unless some funding becomes available, although we do expect to add a Tesla charger search function soon. We also have GPS files available on request. It will be a while before Tesla-specific GPS files are available, but such files are part of the plan for current upgrades.

Perhaps an EVCN/EVCM demo/familiarization session of some kind is in order.

We know Coulomb Technologies already does this. Really though, I think all metered parking in cities should be networked. It would save the energy and personal frustration spent driving around looking for a spot. Your GPS would direct you to an available parking space close to your destination. While you're on your trip, if that space gets taken, the system picks the next nearest open spot, and so on. Once you are within a few minutes of your destination, that parking spot is reserved for you. No time or energy wasted, no arguments over who saw it first. You could also get some feedback on how high demand is for parking before you set out and ultimately decide to take the train.

The technology could get REALLY sophisticated someday.
My car knows it is at 50%, so it needs 3 hours to charge.
It knows my next destination is 80 miles away, and that I want to be in this area 2 hours for a movie. You see where I am going with this... A whole "AI" that knows the needs and destinations and wait times for a whole city of EVs. It would reserve you the charge spot closest to your current destination that has long enough availability for the charge you need to get to your next charge spot. It could get really complicated and useful. Like air traffic control.

Tesla public charging station list at www.evchargernews.com

Tesla charging stations now have their own charger type at evchargernews.com. Check it out.

There is a special listing for all public Tesla charging stations. Later on, when they are more numerous, the listings will be divided by regions. For now, there is just one listing.

For the time being, EVChargerMaps shows Tesla charging stations as OC -- Other Conductive. Additional programming work will be required to add a new charging station type to the EV Charger Maps system. The best way to access the maps is through evchargernews.com. Start with the Tesla charger listing, then click on the map/comments link on that listing. That will take you to the proper map for the Tesla charging station. You are strongly encouraged to leave comments for each visit to a charging station, using the Add Comment button on the map page.

If you have any questions or corrections, either use the Add Comments function, or send an email to [emailprotected].

It might take the current ... but plenty of technical practical issues, so probably not. What would he use to get access to the 100A ? The HPC will only do 70A (pilot signal). An Avcon adapter does not handle more than 32A from what I've been told. And the charger firmware in the car would have to be modified to allow 100A.

I think he's referring to the difference between 203 and 240 (18% faster ... or more like 15% after voltage drop, but still significant time savings).

??Hollister ... would be too far away and unlikely be related to the PasoRobles spot.

ClipperCreek makes a 100 Amp (breaker rating, not output) version of the HPC, but the car doesn't (currently) accept charging at that rate. That could be what the "secret" charger is.

ClipperCreek offers a TS-70, 80, 90, and 100. The Tesla HPC is actually the TS-90, and the 70, 80, 90, & 100 in the model number refer to the breaker rating, not the actual delivered charging amps.

    Range Anxiety

I am going to Victorville this weekend (which is 35 miles from Barstow) Should I take the Tesla? My son has a soccer tournament. From my house to the Holiday Inn Express (Hesperia, CA) is 105 miles. From the hotel to the soccer fields (Apple Valley, CA) is 18 miles. I'll be making that trip back & forth at least 3 times. There may be the occasional 'joy ride' for onlookers as well. Return Sunday. Does anyone have any suggestions as to charging?

    YES !

At the hotel 120V (with an extension cord) should be "arrange-able" (call ahead) ... slow I know, but every bit helps. Possibly same at the soccer field. Hypermile, but worst case ... on the return trip use Parson'sBldg which has 14-50 ( I assume you have RFMC or equivalent ) -- if, and only if, you need it for a boost. ( If you can't make it to Pasadena on way home, PM me about Pomona. )

I'm being selfish and want to try to arrange a recharge similar to my home where I am not making a stop just to recharge. To that end I found an RV park less than 0.4 miles from my hotel with a 50AMP hook-up. Desert Willow RV Resort Details - 860000594 Good Sam Club. This would be perfect!

I RAN OUT of Electricity in Victorville! Calm down, I won't leave you hanging... it was my electric razor and I forgot to bring my charge cord, so I borrowed some one else's charge cord who also had a Norelco!
Maybe one day driving an EV will be as common place as having an electric razor?

Thank you to Earl & Georg who were like parent birds watching me fly from the nest for the 1st time. They gave me the tools and confidence and the rest was up to me. I'll admit that for the 1st year, I've had my training wheels on. I've never charged other than at home. But why should I? What's the stat? 80% of U.S. car trips are < 40 miles round trip. Well 100% of my trips have been 200 miles r/t or less so there was no need to charge anywhere else. Up until now, when my son and I went to Victorville for the weekend soccer tourney.

I hopped on line, found an RV park that coincidentally was a parking lot away from my hotel. When I got to Victorville, the next day after the games, I drove over there and checked in & drove into my stall between 2 behemoths. Popped the charge port, and affixed the charge cable, NEMA 14-50 to the post and the other part to my car. That's when the trouble started. Oh, I'm sorry, were you lurking to find something bad go wrong & then post it with "ha ha" on your FB page? The "trouble" is the crowd I drew when it started charging. Luckily I had plenty of brochures to go around. They were plenty interested and some even embarrassed at the gas guzzlers they were all driving; I wished them all well and more importantly the Tesla Roadster received rave reviews and a warm reception.

I walked back 4 minutes to my hotel room. We went swimming & hot tubing (indoor). Got showered & shaved (with the borrowed cord) and walked back to the car. We went to dinner, gave a few joy rides (I wanted to get some juice before dinner expecting some joy rides after dinner) & then back to the RV park for more charge & walked back to the hotel. This was a seamless operation thanx to the TMC community. Thank you! Ciao, Ian

Apparently a few of these Tesla connector to NEMA14-50 adapters have been made so that (for instance) a MINI-e driver could charge at a Rabobank.

(I saw one in person at an EAA meeting)

Any idea where they got the Tesla connector from? I would expect those to be hard to get. My guess is that they know a Tesla engineer.

You can buy parts at the sales / service centers...

$400+ just for the Tesla end.

A new Tesla charge station in Santa Barbara at the Canary hotel (formerly the Hotel Andalucia)

I wish Tesla would get thier act togeather an tell us these things! I was told by a guy at Alt Car this weekend. I just Googled to find this.
Who knows how many other Tesla sites are out there they are not telling us about.

It would be noiice to confirm the site though. My source said there was one unit.

I just checked my mobile app for EV Charger Maps & did not see it, nor the Rabo Bank America listed there neither! That's even worse than Tesla not telling us. Of course that is a volunteer org.
A qualifying statement about Rabo... the Goleta branch was listed and I do not know if the 4 branches in Santa Barbara or the Carpenteria branch have the Tesla chargers.

    ChargeIt!
    Only Goleta Rabobank has it.

(The next closest to you is Santa Maria Rabobank.)

If you make it to Santa Monica can't you just go over to the Tesla store nearby?

Only until 5:00Pm (and before 9:00AM)

It's really significant that the Newport Store is 24-7

    Willows Lodge, Woodinville WA

I just added info on NEMA 14-50 charging at Willows Lodge in Woodinville, WA (east side suburbs of Seattle). It's an upscale hotel with two well-regarded restaurants on-site. Next door is the Red Hook Brewery with a number of local wineries nearby.

It's definitely a candidate for anyone needing a place to stay and charge while spending a night in the Seattle area.

I have no relationship with Willows Lodge, just a fan of any establishment that puts in charging to accommodate Roadsters or other EVs.
