RJ Dibble So, having had my Model S 90D since September 2015 I thought I had it all figured out. Keep an eye peeled for the chippers, take my foot off the accelerator, decelerate rapidly, and all would be well. No harm no foul. Of course, today I was in a crappy mood and did not notice the white SUV coming around the corner while I was doing 75 mph in a 55 mph. Result, I got a speeding ticket. Have not had one of those since sometime in the early 1980's when I was making a run down from Hood River, Oregon to Sacramento, CA in my Volkswagen Jetta and I practically ran over a chipper as he dawdled along in the fast lane at 55 mph. Jeeze. So what am I doing wrong? I had a Canadian friend who had a little radar help in his car. Is there something missing in my Model S? Elon? Are you feeling me?
May 4, 2016
msnow Sorry RJ, sounds like a radar detector wouldn't have helped.
May 4, 2016
Edmond Up here they sit on the bridge over the overpass and laser you. Staties are all about the speeding tickets and that's it, let's not kid ourselves.
I saw a thread here about six months ago by a guy who had a great radar detector and covert laser jammer installed. It was made out of a distance measurer. I could have sworn I took notes, but can't find them now.

ViperDoc FunnyI have never had a ticket in my Roadster or Model S, and I don't even have a radar detector. Amazing what driving the speed limit does for you (and increases your range!)
May 4, 2016
msnow So true but every once in a while you just have to (safely) get on it!
May 4, 2016
RJ Dibble Hmmm, so are you saying that you have never had a speeding ticket while driving any car, ever?
May 4, 2016
int32_t Doood!I don't think there's any excuse for that. It's one thing to rocket to the speed limit; it's quite another to exceed it (IMHO).

MarcG In 1.5 years of ownership of my P85D with INSANE always on, none! And some people thought red was a bad choice for just that reason..
May 4, 2016
Smokkelaar Lol, i had like 8 tickets last 5 years.
All in the netherlands.
Collected them all in 300.000km
30 - 36=25 euro
30 - 37=31 euro
50 - 65=102 euro
80 - 87= 29 euro
80 - 89= 35 euro
100 - 107=29 euro
120 - 128=32 euro
130 - 135=19 euro
Some other tickets
No insurrens for a total-loss scooter. In my garage: 380 euro
Wrong parking: 90 euro
Driving scooter without licence: 220 euro.
Will wait what the model 3 will do for those numbers.
May 5, 2016
RJ Dibble Finally! Someone other than the holier-than-thou '0' ticket holders. I was one of them for 30 years until yesterday.
(Oops, does that make me one of them?)
Well, other than hurting your wallet - wait a minute - "In your garage" - How the heck do you get a ticket in your garage?
May 5, 2016
mikeash I got pulled over for the first time ever after I got my Model S. Thankfully for me, the officer got called to an accident during the stop so I got off with a verbal warning.
I usually do my best to stay within 5MPH of the speed limit. Works pretty well for the most part. In this one case, the limit dropped sharply and I didn't catch it in time. Probably would have happened in any other car too, but it's more fun to blame it on the Model S.
May 5, 2016
Smokkelaar A scooter has a licence plate in the netherlands,
So they do every week a check in the database if there are licence plates without insurance and you get automatically a ticket.
And it was not automaticly extended to next year. I had a warning 6 weeks before that date, but i forgot.
o and the value of that scooter was 10-20 euro's or something.
almost all my tickets are automaticty send due the systems in the netherlands.
I have normally like 6 speeding camara's every day on my road. and then some temporary camara's on different places.
so sometimes you pass an other car at a wrong moment, and then you get a ticket.
Its still less then 0,5% of my car expenses. i can save more money with less energy consumption for my car and get the speed down all the time.

May 5, 2016
Zextraterrestrial one ticket on Jan 2, 2013.
1 month and 1 day after getting my S, apparently there was a street racing accident on New Years's and they were using radar the day after...45 in a 35 just off a stoplight and was planning on dropping back to < 40 after the launch...oops
May 5, 2016
2krazykats I've heard these radar jammers are illegal so check your local laws...
I've not gotten a speeding ticket yet in my S but when I bought the car and was doing a budget for the potential cost of ownership. I estimated 1 ticket a year. I may need to adjust based on actual experience.

May 5, 2016
pedriscoll I got my first speeding ticket in over 15 years just 1 week after taking delivery. I was on I-65 leaving Indianapolis for Chicago and was on the phone with my office. I wasn't used to the quiet and smoothness of the S. Thought I was going 60 or so in 55 zone, but was actually going 75. Now I am more careful. Set autopilot for no more than 5 miles over the limit generally.

May 5, 2016
Smokkelaar like i said before, yes all of them are from speed camera's.
I encounter every day 6 at least.
and not even tell the mobile one's.
the 107, 128 and the 65 were not the mobile ones. the other were mobile ones.
May 5, 2016
CHG-ON I got one. I was hot footing it in the mountains with a WRX and I was the one who got snagged. Skyline Blvd (35), about Woodside, for those on the peninsula. Stalled my court date for 15 months. Got out of it. The cop did show up and actually asked for the case to dismissed because it was so long ago that he could not remember the facts. I was floored. When we walked out of the court side by side, he turned to me and said: "enjoy your car". Almost in front of the judge! I was even more floored. I said "thank you for your kindness" and we went our separate ways. I didn't know what else to say. I think he remembered...
I still can't believe it.
I will tell you that when he stopped me, I rolled down the window and immediately said that I had no excuse and apologized. He had me red-handed going 75 in a 50 on a tight curve. He wrote me of course, but at a much lower speed. I was as respectful and polite as I could be (and as we should be with any peace officer, IMO) through the entire process. He was too.
Kindness and civility do pay.
May 5, 2016
CHG-ON If California tickets cost the same amount as yours, I wouldn't care at all about getting them. Do you accumulate points that can then cause your license to be revoked, as in the US?
May 5, 2016
Sharkbait Laser jammers - do they really work? I haven't researched detectors for some years. Has anyone perfected a laser detector? However, I'm not an advocate of speeding or pedal to the metal antics in populated areas. I think 20 mph over the posted speed in California rewards you with a 2-point misdemeanor citation. It will hurt your insurance for many years.
May 5, 2016
Edmond They work. Illegal in some states so people hide a cut-off switch and the emitter. It's actually dual-purpose: range-finder for parking, and jamming. Of course if you're the only one on the road and their gun reads 999, they're going to take a reeeal close look at you.
Escort/Passport has detected laser for decades, but the catch is all lasers are trigger-operated.

May 6, 2016
Btrflyl8e Oh, all of you are such law-abiding citizens! I've only been pulled over once in my Tesla, but it was silly and he knew it, so I got just a warning. I'm older and wiser now, so of course don't take the risks I did my youth. Back in my teenage years, I collected so many speeding violations my license was suspended indefinitely, I had to appear in court twice, and take a class at the police station in order to get it reinstated. I loved to street race, like a lot of young fools.
I remember putting my hair in a ponytail and wearing a pink dress to court, I don't know if that helped, but both times I was fined only a small amount and sent on my way!
Don't worry, I'm a recovered street racer...
May 6, 2016
Beryl None in my Model S and 2 in over 40 years of driving. Got pulled over 3 times but one was around Christmas time and I was given a break.
The officer who taught my concealed handgun class said he and his friends don't write tickets on CHL carriers but I haven't had an opportunity to see if that is true.

Edmond 2015 Radar Detector and Laser Jammer Shootout
2015 Laser Jamming Testing - Radar Roy
But the new random-pulse guns are a problem for all but two systems. Most LEOs use older equipment though, realistically.
You want to program it to cut off 4 seconds after it detects signal, to give you time to slow down, and to allow the cop to then get your speed. Not a good idea to leave it on.
PS - States which prohibit laser jammers: California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
May 6, 2016
Camera-Cruiser Been lucky in 7 months of ownership, I know I should have earned a few. The absence of noise makes it easy to find myself in the low to mid 80s and passing sometimes above that. Then again in Southern California (and really 91, 405, 110 fwys) car pool lanes you are either stuck at 5mph or 80mph, and it goes from one to the other moment to moment. So daily terror!
May 6, 2016
CHG-ON I took me a very long time to get accustomed to the silence. I would find myself at 80 or 90 without even realizing it. I'd say it took about 3 months to understand the feel of the car at various speeds.
May 6, 2016
S4WRXTTCS None so far in almost a year of ownership.
But, honestly most of the credit goes to TACC because I use that on the freeway 90% of the time.
Without it I'd end up constantly letting it slip past 10 over the freeway. In Western Washington State 10 over is pretty common, and 99.9% of the cops will just ignore you. That's what I set the TACC at and so it ends up actually being around 9 over.
On surface streets I'm sure I'll eventually get a lame duck one. Like display of speed while launching from a light. Even in a 70D it's fun to see how fast from a stoplight the thing gets to the speed limit. Sometimes before reaching the end of the intersection.
May 7, 2016
Chrisizzle I used to get a ticket a year but nothing with the Tesla.
Why? I can't drive fast on long highway drives. The reduced speed I need to make a long distance trip means I am going slower than in my old ICE cars.
May 7, 2016
HankLloydRight I've gotten a few speeding tickets over the years... but just one in the Tesla a few weeks right after I bought it.
I was doing 42 in a 30 zone, and the LEO was running radar... the problem was I had installed my ValentineOne radar/laser detector in the car, but had taken it down overnight and didn't put it back up in time that morning. Stupid!
Anyway, I hired a local lawyer to fight the ticket, which worked. He got it knocked down from the speeding fine and 2 points to 0 points and a non-moving violation "Parking on Pavement" fine of $175. So at least my insurance wouldn't go up.
Since the V1 never worked that well behind the coated windshield, I've had the Belltronics STir+ system installed, which is great, and has saved me from dozens of potentially bad LEO encounters. Well worth the investment many times over!
May 7, 2016
Skotty While I am one who sticks really close to the speed limit in almost all cases, with only 1 ticket over 20 years ago, and I like police in general, I have a very dim view of highway patrol handing out speeding tickets. I believe they regularly abuse the letter of the law to fine everyone as much as possible without any consideration for whether or not the driver was acting dangerously. They set up in situations where safe drivers can be caught off guard, like the speed limit suddenly lowering, and they just don't care. It's high time laws are enacted to begin restricting what they can do as a consequence of their years of abusing their powers with no respect for the spirit of the law.
May 7, 2016
MarcG Two words: financial incentives
May 7, 2016
Edmond I had a bid in on a used radar detector with remote antenna, but got beaten out at the last minute.
Then I realized that every one of the tickets I've gotten here in W WA over the past 10 years has been from laser. And that several states have moved entirely to laser, including apparently mine. So instead of a radar detector I've now put that money into the best laser jammer.
And I might add that I am not impressed by the Blackvue at all. I've already found three different much better dashcams. I don't see much point in GPS for them though, as speed can be used against you.
May 7, 2016
HankLloydRight I agree that there's nothing special about Blackview dashcams, it's just that they're real popular here, so more and more people get them.
My dashcam has GPS for location tracking (in the video metadata), but I have the speed indicator turned off just for that reason.

Diavel One word : Fact
May 7, 2016
cpa No tickets for me. However, twice Chippies followed me in my blind spot for quite a distance. The first time was driving west on Interstate 40 just after the ag checkpoint east of Needles. This was before the SC was built at Needles, so I kept my speed under the speed limit (64/70) in order to reach Barstow. The Chippie was parked beside the ag checkpoint, and as soon as I was waved through, he began to follow me all the way to the last Needles exit (about 8 miles.) This was at 6:30 on a Monday evening.
The second time was last summer early on a Sunday morning. I had just finished Supercharging at Mt. Shasta City, and was headed south on Interstate 5. I kept the cruise control at 62/65 going down the hill. Mr. Chippie stayed in my blind spot for a good 7-8 miles before slowing down and getting behind me to exit the freeway.
Both times I was the only automobile on the road.
I guess that they are trained (informally of course) to try to coerce drivers into a driving error when traffic is light--boredom among other things.

May 7, 2016
ViperDoc Well, back when I was probably 19 or 20, I got caught in a whole line of cars doing 45 in a 35 zone. I just wasn't paying attention to my speed. Somehow that ticket just disappeared though. I sent in the card saying I wanted to go to court, and I never heard back. I never paid it or got the points. It just seemed to go away somehow.
Since then, not one ticket. Before my Roadster, I drove a Mitsubishi 3000 GT/VR-4 (twin turbo) for 17 years (and 250,000 miles). I had it tricked out with a Valentine One and a Laser Jammer, but I had them primarily to help me make sure I was really paying attentionI still basically drove the speed limit by choice. So when I got the Roadster, the detector went into the closet, and 5 years hence, still no tickets.
May 7, 2016
HankLloydRight Great car! I was thinking about "trading up" my '85 Mitsu Starion into the 3000GT -- just seemed "right" since I enjoyed the snot out of the Starion... still one of my favorite cars I've owned. Traded it in at 125,000 when it basically started to fall apart... just as the 3000GTs were coming out. If I think back, they were just out of my price range back then, so I traded it in on a VW Corrado G60. On topic, not long after that I got a speeding ticket on the Mass Pike doing something like 80mph all alone on a clear monday morning and got tagged cresting a hill. I should have been paying more attention. Took the ticket to court, and the state police and the local magistrate basically said "tough *sugar*, you're paying the ticket"..
May 7, 2016
Edmond Reminds me of a day 35 years ago when I was driving home from Tyler to Dallas. I noticed that cars had gathered into clumps, and always slowed down as they crested a hill, so I decided that's a good time to pass these slowpokes! I was passing the clumps one after another, having a great time, until I crested a hill and BAM, he got me going 82.
It was a Friday afternoon and I knew I wouldn't want to mess with it, so I went straight to the Canton Courthouse where the old judge was the only one there. I told him I'd just like to pay my fine --I guess he could see I'm a city-slicker-- so he took my money, but that ticket never went on my record! THAT was how it was in the Olden Days.
Ever since then I always look for a 'patsy' to follow, who's going nice and fast and will sweep up any tickets waiting ahead.
I have two questions though:
Why doesn't anyone remember the Alamo?
And why doesn't anyone remember that Mitsubishi made the planes that bombed Pearl Harbor?
