Haven't tried from a dash but works great on Chrome, which I guess misses the point :)

I test on Chrome too ;)

I keep updating it .. still looking for feedback :)

Link to tesla.plugshare.com perhaps? It's their new page tweaked for the Model S browser. (They posted about it on here somewhere recently)

Done! .. If you guys could test the accuracy of the Geolocation here too, that would be cool:

Really cool. Geolocation worked for me using my desktop browsers (Opera and Chrome). Will try the car later.

    Thanks for the app!

A cookie to save the zip code of the weather screen would be great. And/or a list of recent selections.

    JaredBanyard
Actually I just rewrote that screen, it's now using geolocation and Forecast.io.

    Thanks man I appreciate it!

Whoa, the stock widget was way too much for the car to handle, I replaced it with a lighter weight one.

I also replaced the huge nationwide radar loop with a smaller one. The giant animated gif was rough to load.

I would like the see the actual stock price, and not just the change/change%. I'd suggest just having the stock price and the change% and leave out the absolute change.

Humble suggestion to Valet page, which may be my favorite.
Arrange some links above the Valet title, pointing to various language versions of the same content. We really want Joe Valet to understand.

That huge red screen with the Tesla logo is too distracting for me. How about a nice gray analog clock there instead.
Otherwise, very nice on the 5.8 browser, but I got some IE restarts in going to plugshare (IE for WIn 8.1). Also, could not log on to plugshare in IE, works in the car.
  • Apr 2, 2014
    HankLloydRight
I don't think what happens in IE really matters for qTes.la or Plugshare sites optimized for the Model S browser*

On the new page, are you interlacing/alternating current news articles with articles about Tesla?

    * As a web developer myself, what fails in IE is most likely Microsoft's fault, and not the fault of the website. Also, IE 8 is a *very* old version of IE which is up to version 11 now.. not that it's really any better at adhering to *any* web standards. (edit: Sorry, I've mistaken Win 8 for IE 8 in your post. Nevermind ;) )

Careful on that swiss railway clock, they sued Apple for it's use of the clock as well. You're on a smaller scale, I know, but just be prudent.
  • Apr 2, 2014
    HankLloydRight
funny -- I couldn't remember the name of the clock, so I googled "apple clock lawsuit" to find it.

But I seriously doubt the Swiss Rail people are going to find out about, or even care about a clock app that a few dozen or hundred people use.
  • Apr 2, 2014
    JaredBanyard
I like it, but it doesn't scale or embed very well...

Also skeuomorphism needs to die. I really dislike Tesla sticking with it. Android killed, Apple finally followed suit with iOS 7, it's time for Tesla to kill it to.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yeah it's not like I'm making any money off this.
  • Apr 2, 2014

I hadn't heard of skeuomorphism before (had to google it)... but where is Tesla using it?
  • Apr 2, 2014
    JaredBanyard
The entire touchscreen interface is using "realistic looking materials" instead of using modern, flat, efficient UI design. Skinning things with carbon fiber backgrounds, aluminum bars, and hovering objects, is just a waste.

Oh no.. Looks like I'm already hitting API limits on Weather Underground... ugh.

Okay, switched to forecast.io for severe weather, i get more api calls and better value from it if i go over.

The clock/logo switch should be all good to go now.
  • Apr 3, 2014
    JaredBanyard
Temperatures are localized now for our international friends. (Celcius)

Severe weather alerts are only checked if they are in the US (to reduce API calls). I will get charged $1 for every 10,000 API calls per day over the first 1000. We will see :p

    Time to add international radar.

the weather maps seem to miss the I-80 corridor from San Francisco to Reno.

Perhaps it is just my chrome browser on the PC and it works in the car. The thumbnails show complete coverage, but the enlarged version seems to be cutoff. Actually after selecting several, there are lots of areas that are missing due to this. I just noticed Sacramento because that is where I live.

edit: OK, I found the problem. It is the widescreen format of my computer monitor. When I change the format to ~4:3 the problem goes away. It probably works perfect in portrait mode of the Model S.

Same here, the news scroll is a bit too fast for me.
  • Apr 3, 2014
    JaredBanyard
Yeah i may just turn off the scroll .. though the browser in the car has a hell of a time with scrolling internal frames.. In other words.. it doesnt do it.

    Love it!

Only issue is that here in Old England the radar map keeps changing scale every 2-3 seconds so is impossible to study (running it on my iPad).

what are the two red numbers in the top R of the screen please?
  • Apr 5, 2014
    JaredBanyard
Hmm could you take a video of the effect please? Also, its build for the car, not for the iPad ;)

The numbers are the top are the stock price and movement for the day of TSLA.

What version of firmware do you have? You need 5.9+ and need to approve the location when it asks.

Also, I just tweaked charging and radar for international people.

Waiting until I get 5.9 to really start messing with it

    Where are you located?

    - - - Updated - - -

I settled on openchargemaps.org non North-America locations .. it's the most comprehensive worldwide and works "ok" in the browser. Here is the URL I'm using:
    http://openchargemap.org/api/widgets/map/?maptitle=Map%20of%20Charging%2...
If there is a way to pass Lat/Long, trigger geolocation automatically, or get bigger buttons, let me know. Here is their API page: http://openchargemap.org/site/develop
Also here is their web app page, but it doesn't seem to work through frames in my site: http://openchargemap.org/app

That explains it, Thanks for clarification. I am on 5.8.8, is there anyway, I can pull 5.9 or the only way to get 5.9 is to wait for firmware upgrade notification from Tesla?

    JaredBanyard
You should be able to bring it in to the service center so they can upgrade it for you.

    Jared,
I am finding this to be a real "go to" app for my Tesla and really appreciate the work you've put into it. That said, I have some points/problems/issues I'd like to point out. Perhaps they've been pointed out previously and/or you're aware...if so, I apologize and please ignore.

1)The main thing I go to the site for, usually, is the Radar. Unfortunately it may be the most wonky bit of the app. it is nearly impossible to tell, from the thumbnails, which region is which unless there is obvious coast line. I'm in the Midwest and the only chance I have of hitting the right one is by identifying a distinct cloud formation on the full US map and then finding it on the thumbnails. Can they be labeled?
2)Again, with the radar, when you do open a radar image it is cropped in the half-screen. I can open to full to view, but if I want to keep it open while accessing other features I again lose it. I can try to scroll up, but that never seems to work and just causes the site to kind of crash and lock up.
3)I had an issue the other day when viewing radar where I tried to go back, then hit home and had partial screens of the home page on the left, that was unusable, and radar on the right, that was unusable...no amount of refreshing or hitting of the home buttons fixed that. Finally had to go to a whole new web site, load it, then go back to qtes.la.

I think there are a few other things...the news feed can be wonky. But I dont' use it a lot.

    JaredBanyard
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I'm in the process of trying to get the whole web app rewritten and redesigned. It's taking quite awhile since I am recruiting help with the more advanced web infrastructure and doing it in my spare time.

I will consider removeing the gif radar loops completely and use geolocation with dynamic loops from an API. This is how the site works outside of the US (but the API costs me money). I can at least consider center-scaling instead of center-cropping the loops, or allow scrolling somehow, but the tesla browser basically doesn't support touch-scrolling of embedded scrollviews.

The scrolling on the browser is pretty terrible in general. I have had other people reboot the computer to improve the web browser (holding down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel).

    Cheers,
    Jared

Thanks Jared, I don't wish for my concern to be seen as a complaint, just a data point. I appreciate your hard work on this and realize there are costs and time issues and that you have other priorities. I still think it's a great idea and hope it continues to grow and improve.
  • May 5, 2014

Its a cool initiative. Perhaps i'm old but the news section could use a bigger font. Also if you can pull the hourly weather from Forcast.io that would be great.

Jared, is there a way to change which screen it defaults to? I would prefer to go straight to weather. Frankly, I don't have a need for seeing the clock.
Thanks for putting this together. It's a great site!

    Thanks for this convenient page!

For some reason, my clock is always four hours ahead. I'm in Quebec (same time zone as New York.) The location is being detected properly, at least for Weather, so I'm not sure where the problem is.

Just found this thread... I like it! Weather radar was something I was hoping Tesla would add to their Maps app.

Also agreed on the skeuomorphism; ever since iOS 7 the chrome on the Tesla display has looked dated.

    JaredBanyard
Hey Everybody! So I'm doing some work on the website this weekend! I have already made some major speed and content improvements on my staging version of the site. But I have run into a couple issues.

For those of you that haven't seen the site: QuickTesla.

First, I made every page bookmarkable so you can just bookmark the one(s) you use the most. I did this by removing the frameset.

Second, I remove the clock on the main page and just made it straight html. This should make sure it always loads fast.

Third, I may need to figure out an SSL solution to continue using the geolocation of the browser. I'm hoping I can get cloudflare enabled on my webhosting account to do this, and get some performance improvements at the same time. I mainly want to do this so I can put Waze for Tesla Incidents and Supercharger Traffic in an iframe. They are https, which I can't embed in an http site.

But, the main issue though is the radar. I hate the implementation right now, and I have a great one ready, but the cost is going to be significant. It is a dynamically created animated gif just based on your geolocation. But, a maximum of 5000 calls a day is $300/mo and 100,000 calls a day is $600/mo. Right now only have 500 calls a day allowed. I have a donate page ready but it feel scummy :( PM me if you would like to test out what I have done and have an idea how I could fund this.

    Jared

Is SSL required? Last I tried it, the https version of the site wasn't working with the tesla browsert.
  • Jul 9, 2016
    JaredBanyard
https was the only one working for me in chrome anyway. The tesla browser seems flaky with the site in general.

You know what screw it, I'm going live with the new site, worst case we hit the monthly cap for the wunderground radar data and it doesnt work: qTesla. I'm also in the process of enabling cloudflare, so it's going to be a rocky 24 hours for the site.
  • Jul 9, 2016
    JaredBanyard
I re-enabled the iframe with no https for the waze site! lets try it again
  • Jul 9, 2016

Looks like the radar requests aren't too bad right now! I have 30 "overflow" drops built up with weather underground and we are only hitting about 250 requests/day. The only problem I have right now is trying to get the iframes for waze and plugshare to resize when you make the browser full or half screen when viewing it...
