Sorry, didn't notice it was his first post and missed your post.
Let me buffer my post by saying that I think we all appreciate new ideas, but a "retro" grill that was a necessity for an internal combustion vehicle then it's something we'd gladly leave in the past. We have seen some pretty interesting grill designs out there (search for a thread about a year old on the subject) that take advantage of the fact that we do not need air flowing through a grill to cool a radiator. It actually allows for quite a lot of creativity that was never possible in an ICE vehicle before.

Can you do one with vertical slats - I bet it will look even better.

I thought the design was just painted on rather than being an actual grill. Looks ok to me.

FWIW, frontal air intake is not just an ICE thing. MS couldn't work without it either.

True, and no offence meant to Andyeung, but he specifically asked us what we think of the design. And the overwhelming majority seems to dislike it.
Add me to the "no thank you" crowd. Imho that grille looks too ICE, and too Ford Mondeo...

I remember that thread from Dec 2012 and contributed some hand-drawn (ie, not 3D rendered) ideas for 'fake grills' and front end mods. I realise air flow into a grill is not needed, and keeping the Cd low is important, but I really like my mod #3 below that removes the gaping chrome surround.

Peoples views may have changed now that there are about 30,000 MS's out in the wild, but here's the original artwork again :-

I think most people would prefer just scrapping the gapping fish mouth altogether. Much more arrow dynamic.

The original prototype had an understated grill and vents. I can understand why Tesla went for a more distinctive look, but it wasn't a popular decision when they changed it.

I always thought that design change was required due to some regulation about having replaceable bumpers or something like that? I don't remember where I read that but I was always under the impression that was the reason... And a similar question to this, does anyone know why the sigs had that two piece nose cone that stuck out a few inches ? Same reasoning?
  • Jan 3, 2014
    gg_got_a_tesla
The change to the vents and the now-protruded lower diffuser was apparently to comply with Canadian laws regarding low-speed collisions with pedestrians; to make the impact lower down at the shins rather than up at the knees.

The Signature fat lip was originally meant for easy access to the 12V battery terminals, I think. The new single piece nose cone comes off nicely with the technique that wormhole posted sometime ago (press down on the two chrome/plastic plates on the lip under the frunk).

I look at this design and think "the EV1 was already built why do it again". The same thought goes to the black design too.

nice catch, the bottom half would have looks nearly identical to the ford taurus. then again, thats the re-designed ford taurus, which isn't actually too bad looking. I was quite impressed with their redesign (I'd still never buy one though haha).

This'd be a great look for Gen 3! Franz has said that he doesn't prefer the "unit face" approach across the fleet a la Audi so, hopefully, we get a departure from the MS's "fish mouth" for Model E.
  • Jan 3, 2014
    aaron0k
I thought it's a bumper strength regulation that mandates the bumper can take a 2.5mph impact without damage (or less than $500 to repair). The cone effectively being a plastic bumper that can be replaced for under $500. I suppose if it were to have a more elaborate design, it would be more costly to replace.
  • Jan 3, 2014
    austinEV
Geez, for what its worth I think the OP's idea isn't bad. I for one don't like the fish mouth at all, and I am anxiously awaiting some aftermarket option of modification. I think if the fake grill pointed down in a slight chevron it would follow the lines of the car more logically. The horizontal lines are the problem that jumps out at you. But breaking up the black gape is a fix that needs made.

Off topic, but I have never understood the chrome strips on the bottom of the doors either. It breaks up the flow for no good reason.

I bought one of these redesigned Tauruses and it is a fantastic car, better than many imports I've driven. It is huge like the MS and makes my Roadster look like a little baby car.

@PV4EV....great designs. I'd go for them. The front "nose cone" is the weakest part of the production MS design. If the notion is that any grill at all is prehistoric ICE crap, then there should be nothing at all, like the Avanti. I don't think air intake features will disappear with newer EV car designs...don't forget, the humans inside need fresh air, and grills are still form following function, even if just for that reason.

As someone else mentioned there used to be small grills where those two small pieces went. They probably found out that extra air was not needed and went to solid pieces. Finally they figured that lots of pieces = more chance for failure and is more complex to assemble and finally went to the one piece nose cone. That's my take on it.

A while back there was a company doing an Aston style grill for the S. I remember the designer came by the site with a few pix to test people's reception to it. It was a lot more positive than this grill because a few did like it.

    Grill or no grill

See post #7 MS Front Grill Alternatives

Thinking about the current disliked grill and comparing it with other cars I see on the road, I find it's presence makes for a more aggressive sporty statement which suites a Model S. A no-nose look might be a better fit for a smaller car (E?). A couple of narrow grills reminds me of the late Prelude (and if that thought evokes a certain feeling, there's your truth).

Take away the Tesla badge, and you wouldn't be able to tell what this car is coming up your rear view mirror. It looks like a generic Japanese coupe.. (Honda? Acura?)

One of the design elements important to top performing cars is for them to be instantly recognizable when showing up in your rear view mirror - so you can pull over and let them by :)

Take the BMW M series cars - everyone of them has that large gaping air scoop below the front bumper level, in addition to the kidney grilles. This so you know that this is the 'alpha' BMW - and to pull over for it to pass.

It's the same for the Tesla. I have to say the nose wasn't my favorite part of the car's design. But now I have to say it has grown on me, and I am looking forward to the day ICE drivers will recognize that nose cone and pull over to allow the superior car to pass through. LOL.
