Model X Online Configuration by September. part 1

Elon Just said it. It's going to happen. Take it to the bank.
  • Aug 5, 2015
    NigelM
He said "two to three weeks probably" (slightly mumbling as usual though) so it might be sooner than September. Anyhow, looks like we maybe won't have to wait till end September?
  • Aug 5, 2015
    Lyon
Yeah, I took his comments to mean that we'd see it online this month.

    Model X configuring in August

Specifically Elon said on the Q2 conference call, 2-3 weeks from today (Aug 5), so that's August 19 through 26. Meaning maybe end of August! First deliveries still end of September.

But based on what else Elon said, I am personally forecasting not seeing customer deliveries until October or November...

Yes, still on track for deliveries beginning end of Q3.

Man, you guys are a bunch of optimists. I love that.

I've only been following Tesla closely for a month or two, but I believe I know what "two to three weeks probably" means. That extra "probably" is him signaling uncertainty (which doesn't seem to be his bag), so I'd over-emphasize that in my interpretation.
  • Aug 5, 2015
    NigelM
Ha, I don't care. What is certain is that production is getting ready and cars will start being delivered from late September. I'm thinking my car should be sometime around late October/early November which is what I was expecting. :)

Where are the betas? Has Tesla decided to skip them this time around?
  • Aug 5, 2015
    anticitizen13.7
The Beta phase was over months ago. Model X has been in Release Candidate phase since around March, and today's Shareholder letter & Conference call indicated that Release Candidate Model X vehicles had been built on the new assembly line in Fremont.
  • Aug 5, 2015
    bonnie
If the assembly line tooling was just validated last week (one of the reasons for the factory shutdown), then what have we been looking at in all the sightings? Because I seem to recall a few people sure that those were coming off the assembly line. Now we know that wasn't true.

I'm sticking with FrankenCar for now and patiently waiting to see the X:)
  • Aug 5, 2015
    AnOutsider
Although you know I 100% agree with you that what we see isn't the final X, not being made on the final assembly line doesn't mean what we've been seeing isn't representative of the final product -- though, I still firmly believe it will look different.
  • Aug 5, 2015
    bonnie
Oh absolutely agree that it doesn't mean it MUST be different. Only pointing out that people saying 'that's a production car' on the road and concluding it was the final version, might have to reconsider.
  • Aug 5, 2015
    anticitizen13.7
    Release Candidate != Production Car

I don't think we've seen the final product, but I also believe it is highly unlikely that the final product will be substantially different in general appearance from what we've seen in the spy photos and videos. The nose cone and perhaps some of the exterior panel details may be different, but the interior utility and exterior aerodynamic requirements mean that the overall profile simply cannot change.
  • Aug 7, 2015
    Beryl
I agree. I've never understood the comments that the looks of Model X would be shockingly different.

What no one knows on this forum (but that I'm sure Elon is taking into account) is that my birthday is on the 17th - so reveal announcement on August - 17th, reveal event and design studio open on the 26th or 27th.

There, done now, plan accordingly. If you are booking tickets from Europe or Asia to fly to California for the reveal event, you may want to leave a day or two on each side for safety. Come see the Golden Gate Bridge or go for a drive along the PCH. Have a bar-b-q at Bonnie's. Chill..everything is under control.

It was two months between when I finalized my S order and took delivery. Without an official announcement of X's specs and options, I don't get how they could expect early X reservation holders to choose their X configuration quickly enough for the factory to have enough time to fill those orders before September is gone. Unless TM releases specs and options soon (it's already second half of August), substantial deliveries in September seem to be evaporating.
  • Aug 19, 2015
    timf
There were never supposed to be substantial deliveries in September. It's been widely assumed the people who will be taking delivery in September (Founders) have already configured in private. That's not to say they couldn't turn around some orders in 30 days, as they are currently doing this with some Model S orders. However, Elon has stated multiple times that substantial deliveries will not happen until Q4.

No such luck. Sigh. I've had my Model X order in since mid 2012, but haven't really felt much "wait anxiety" since I decided to buy a Model S in late 2012, and received it less than 3 months later. But I just recently reached the point where I now NEED the Model X (for 7 passengers and towing), so I'm finally learning how all those stalwart Model S reservation holders felt for so many years...

    It sucks.

I still do not understand why Tesla just won't release the freaking design studio already... It almost makes one think the Model X is actually vapor ware... Something simply doesn't feel right here and I wish Elon would just come clean or at a minimum meet his own self imposed deadlines. If Tesla doesn't know enough by now to launch the design studio then there is no way they actually meet the definition of a Q3 release for the Model X and the stock will take a beating as a result.

I am worried about your fingers man! Don`t keep them crossed too long, they may turn blue...

    - - - Updated - - -

This is how I explain that.

They want to do a proper reveal for this car before taking the studio online. What is very likely in my mind is that the Founders have already configured and even some Sigs (khm.. Bonnie and her Friday shenanigans... khm) have been asked to do so in person. They are also about to bring the production line online (Elon`s Tweet), meaning that in about 2 weeks we could expect a Founders` delivery event streamed online followed by the studio going live that evening.

Than again I wouldn't hold my breath (or keep my fingers crossed) waiting for the X. They may just randomly surprise us with a Tweet at any time.
  • Aug 31, 2015
    Cosmacelf
Guys, the Model X is delayed, again. Elton pretty much said that in the 2Q conference call. He did say three weeks for the configurator, but he also said that they had supplier issues. When Elon says contradictory things, believe the pessimistic one... I mean, has Tesla ever made a promised date?

Last year, Elon sent the tweet about the "D" the 1st September (for the revelation on Sept 9th).

My guess, is a tweet tomorrow (1rst), just calling the reveal event in ~1 week (with in same time the configurator, like last year with the "D").

PS: I'm not really good at "guess" ... I was really sure that it was las week (since Elon said "In 2-3 weeks" at the August 5th shareholder call)
  • Aug 31, 2015

I think you mean an announcement on Oct 1 for a reveal on October 9th, last year. Not sure what if anything this means for your expectations for September 1st this year...

Then simply stop saying on conference calls with investors listening that the Model X Design Studio will be online by the end of July, then the end of August, then... Just launch the damn thing already. I want to order my Model S but will not do so until the X Design Studio launches. The longer Tesla takes to do this, and the more Elon continues to mislead and\or fail to meet his own deadlines announced publicly, the thinner the ice gets.

    Jeff
  • Aug 31, 2015
    mrdoubleb
Just to be fair, he never said the design studio will be live in 2-3 weeks. He said something like "we are going to ask people to configure in about 2-3 weeks", which he could have technically meant to be Founders and early sigs - which -at least in my theory - may already be under way. Also, all of those calls and ER releases have disclaimers about forward looking statements, current plans and so on for a reason.

Having said that, i think Elon really needs to be more careful in situations like that as he may lose credibility. He very well knew what the analysts meant by those questions about Model X configuration and reveal, but he danced around it to avoid revealing too much of his plans or nail himself to something when there was still so much uncertainty. Still, he should be careful not to become too much of a politician.Half his charm is his straight shooter, tell it like it is, no corporate BS style (the other half being his brains).

Hi. Thanks for taking my question. As far as the Model X goes, last time, Elon, you talked about configuration in July and I understand with the slippage. But when can we start thinking about configuring cars we have orders out there? Customer have orders. And then with about a month away from deliveries, when do you expect to show it to people?

Elon Reeve Musk - Chairman & Chief Executive Officer
We're probably into upper configuration and two or three weeks of the X. So that should go live on the website before the end of August. In terms of the initial deliveries of the X, that's sort of consistent with what we predicted on the last call, which is end of September.
  • Aug 31, 2015
    timf
He specifically said it "should go live on the website before the end of this month". The old quote about configuring in July could have been interpreted the way you suggest, but this is pretty clear cut. The key word here is "should", which suggests an amount of uncertainty. Something could still appear before the day is over but I'm not expecting it. I agree that he would be better off not answering these questions rather than setting false expectations.

Just curious-- why does opening the design studio on the website require some big announcement, or event, or something?

They already did a big "reveal" event a few years ago for the X. Presumably, they will film the first delivery or two and post them on YouTube.

Why should anything more be expected?

  • Aug 31, 2015
    MorrisonHiker
What better place to unveil the X. Just kidding!

Honestly though, it would be nice if they put something up on the website. Anything! Other companies, such as Volvo with the new XC90, have done a great job building up the suspense for a new car about to be unveiled. Yes, the suspense has been building for the X for years but it would be nice to have an updated image on the site...even if the car was in the shadows or covered up. The current site still shows cameras instead of the side mirrors...but I think we're 99% sure it won't look like that.

Ok, ok, I get it, I am getting old and the 2 earnings calls got mixed together in my head. Well, this certainly doesn't make things look any better. One has to wonder though what would be better:
    - openly coming out and saying there is a delay and living with the consequences (share price)
    - going live with the configurator anyway, just delaying deliveries
    - not communicating anything on the topic

I am pretty sure no communication is the worst option, though the tweet about production line 2 is encouraging.

I just received an email from Tesla, subject line "Tesla Updates: August 2015", with this text in it:

"We are building and testing Model X prototypes and on track for first deliveries in late Q3 of this year. We have made significant progress on the installation of a new body shop, a new paint shop and new stamping presses that will establish new capacity for both Model X and Model S."

Note: I am not an X reservation holder. The email had a lot of other text in it on a variety of Tesla-related topics, none of which was new info to me.

I've said many times that it is a mistake for Tesla (usually referring to Elon as the final spokesperson for the company) to keep throwing out dates and deadlines that are almost never met.

It would be far better for Tesla to simply say "It's ready when it's ready", and issue substantive quarterly updates on progress, rather than set unrealistic expectations for engineering projects where things often do take much longer than expected. This constant failure to meet deadlines is damaging to the credibility of the company and damaging to the brand.

Tesla can get away with this now to some extent because they have no competition in high-end EVs, and a loyal fanbase that is willing to tolerate delays because they believe in the cause of transport/storage electrification. Tesla will not be able to get away with this in a mainstream car like Model 3. Regular customers will simply buy something else (like a Honda or a Ford or a Mercedes) if they aren't willing to put up with constant delays and aren't really bought into the whole electrification mission.

Better for who? By teasing us, he's doing a good job at keeping the stock price up. If it was radio silence, the stock price would take a hit...
  • Aug 31, 2015
    anticitizen13.7
    Better for customer relations.

Also, if Tesla loses credibility by constantly promising and never delivering, some investors will bail, and demand for the stock will fall. I don't think this is having any good effect on the stock price, which by my quick look at the charts hasn't really moved since early 2014.

It's shipping product (the Dual Motor models) and high gross margins that are keeping investors on board. This is Tesla backing it's words with great product. Model X is essentially a no-show, although the final looking test vehicles at least prove its not vaporware.

So what's the pricing on the base models? I've been trying to decide if I go with the S or the X and if the pricing is pretty close, it'll be the X.
  • Sep 1, 2015
    CmdrThor
Here is my take on the pricing. I think the Model X 75 kWh will be $79,000 based on the following options included in the Model X Signature. I think Pano roof is no longer an option. And neither is the spoiler since it is standard. Instead of "Next Generation Leather", the option might be the independently operable middle row seats. And on top of these options, sub zero for $1,000 and towing for $750 will be options as they are for the Signature. Based on the Signature X price, it doesn't look like there is any room for a "Sig Tax". I think Signature Model X buyers will pay the exact amount someone who configures an identical production Model X pays.

    Model S Model X
    Base (70 kWh for S, 75 kWh for X) $75,000 $79,000
    90 kWh $13,000 $10,000
    Performance $20,000 $20,000
    MC Paint $1,500 $1,500
    Larger Wheel Option $4,500 $4,500
    Next Generation Leather $2,500 $2,500
    Carbon Fiber Dcor $1,000 $1,000
    Autopilot $2,500 $2,500
    Premium Interior $3,000 $3,000
    Smart Air Suspension $2,500 $2,500
    Upgraded Sound $2,500 $2,500
    3rd Row Seats $3,000 $3,000
    $131,000 $132,000
  • Sep 1, 2015
    timf
There should be at least 3 levels of front seating: standard textile, non-ventilated leather, and ventilated leather. The second row option will likely be priced separately.
  • Sep 1, 2015
    Newscutter
Hard to imagine a price cut to the Model S won't be forthcoming... if not now, then when production ramp is complete. As much as I prefer the S styling, there is so much "added value" to the X that I can't see the average buyer accepting the S is the same price for "less".
  • Sep 1, 2015

Bonnie was #2 in line, so even if my configuration was first, she should get her X first.

In regard to front photos and specs, no front photos were shown in the Design Studio. The minimal specs are have been posted on the other busy thread. The 20 and 22 inch wheels are unique to Model X. No price differences exist for any of the basic paint, wheel or decor selections for Signature X. No cloth seats or Piano Black decor. Personally, I was pleased to see the options provided. The Signature Red color gets lots of complements from everyone.

Is this your account; and if so, do you already get to see delivery-window?

Thanks Mark, and Mathias, for extra details. Not on sig list, though looking at how I'd spec an X, it might make sense to see if I can fill a slot (assuming such a thing I'd possible (blessed by TM,etc))? ;-)

It's good to know how to spec another model. As we talk to others we never know when questions will occur. At one of our meet-ups with OC Tesla, I stood in the parking lot answering questions for hours for a visitor who was in the process of configuring. She had every question possible and was so pleased with the electrician I recommended. Her Tesla Model S is beautifully configured and she is a very happy owner. The extra effort is worth it when the right choices are made to switch from ICE to BEV successfully and enjoyable.
