Here, There, and EVerywhere... Posting our trip SoCal to East Coast and back... part 1

    AEdennis
So, we were hoping to join the crew in Maryland for the Reach the Beach event over a month ago, we did a lot of planning and scenarios for this trip, but but couldn't find the time to make it there on time.

We found the time a few weeks later and decided to do the "Great American Roadtrip. Tesla Edition" for a whirl.

I drafted the trip blog posts on a daily basis and decided to release them 4 weeks from each day of the trip...

So, if you'd like to join us on our "pseudo-real time" journey.

Here are the first 2 posts.

The post from yesterday for preparation.

The post from our first day of the trip published at 9am Pacific today.

Subsequent days will be posted at our blog at 9am Pacific/12 noon Eastern/5pm BST/6pm CET.

    Enjoy.

It's past 9:00 am Pacific Time/5:00 pm BST...

    Today's post is up...

Can you guess what we learned after the first day of 808 miles of driving?

[SPOILER ALERT] Slow down... We're not racing, and 808 miles is a LOT of driving!

    Today's post just went up...

A short snippet, waffles, Presidents, and the view from the window...

The drive was a shorter 300 mile or so drive with LESS Interstates and via Lusk, WY

    Today's post is up!

It was a long drive. Hoped to make it to Wisconsin, with a little tension toward the end of the day.

What's in store for Day 5 (click here)?

Well... The day started with a strange noise emanating from our Model S at the start of this leg of our Roadtrip 2015!

Are we looking at a little disaster?

I noticed you only use the Tesla Super Charger, no other type of EV used along the route huh.
  • Jun 3, 2015
    AEdennis
Not at the moment. This was a primarily SC powered trip followed by L1 - 110V, CHAdeMO, then L2 (both HPWC and J1772) in subsequent days.

    Have to stay tuned.

how accurate is the map route calculation with sc in mind? Do you have a choice to choose between sc only vs sc and other eg on the route calculation?
  • Jun 3, 2015
    AEdennis
You can remove the SC calculations from the navigation. We used it as a guide, but since we were also helping Teslarati with the beta of the App (now released) we stopped at pretty much whatever SC was along the way.

    Great story-

Its it's been great reading your post- I really enjoy it and can't wait to read about the rest of your trip! Btw I m from NorCal and did a road trip in my model s to AZ and that frozen custard at Culvers is still on my mind!

  • Jun 4, 2015
    AEdennis
I am glad that you are enjoying the posts. I had a second opportunity to try frozen custard on the roadtrip and I am a big fan of it. This was the most convenient location to get it though.

Oh, and today's trip post is now published - Day 6.
  • Jun 4, 2015
    smilepak
This thread has been helpful. I am planning to get a Tesla (lease or finance) 70D in the coming month. We tend to go up to NorCal at least a few times a year.

    1) From our house to the first SC (Tejon Ranch) on the 5 freeway is approx 125 miles. Which isn't too bad, but the high mountain of the 5 and LA traffic, that might be ok
    2) From that first SC to second SC (Harris Ranch) is better only 120 miles.
    3) From Harris to Gilroy is 115 miles, cutting through the 152 route.

I suppose we can charge up in Fremont while we are hanging around Silicon Valley. I would think since Tesla factory is there, I would assume more SC around Silicon Valley, but Fremont is the only one ahhah.

Question: I notice you went on a trip with just two ppl. In a car of 4 let day adult and each person one luggage, how much range effect would you think or did you experience any range effect due to added weight?

This whole thread might end up making me give up certain add-on and get the 85D instead ahahha

PCH Route Experience for anyone else who is interested (The highs and lows of driving up Californias Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in a Tesla Model S | Forums | Tesla Motors)
  • Jun 4, 2015
    AEdennis
I've only taken the 101 down from Fremont as we took delivery of our car at the factory (after a factory tour).

Elevation and weight does play a factor in the range, but, the batteries are a big part of the weight of the car. I'm not a "light" man, I'm what I would call "under-tall" for my weight . So, I would guess that the effect is negligible. The 70D is a great car, [SPOILER ALERT] we actually got to drive one on the trip.

When we were first told to "finalize" our order, we had the choice of the 40, 60, and 85 and I've always felt the need to get the biggest battery. Battery degradation will/and does happen and I wanted to postpone the need to swap out the battery/upgrade the battery to as far in the future as possible.

The difference between the 70 and 85 batteries is significant for a few folks, and pretty much negligible for most. Heck, I've been able to put in 54,321 miles over two years on a car that had an 80-100 mile range.

Sorry, I don't really have an answer for your question. Rarely do we have more than two people in the car and we packed pretty well for the trip.

A day early to our first destination, we took advantage of the day and scheduled a check-up at the Lyndhurst, OH Sales and Service Center. It was a good way to try out an "out of CA" service experience. We also got to drive a 70D today.

    So, enjoy today's post.

Smilepak. Try putting your trip and data into a trip on evtripplanner.com. After a few road trips in our car, I've found it to be quite accurate. It has settings for weight, temperature, and more importantly speed factor. I'm typically use 1.2 for the speed factor and it works out well on I5.

    Today's post is up now...

We took a pause and visited the Cleveland/Akron area and spent time with the family.

Finally got to "visit" the Macedonia, OH Supercharger today.

If you're curious about my "artistic skills" check out the post.

@capt601 is right, @smilepak evtripplanner.com is very helpful to get things planned out. We used it for the initial planning of routes to the East Coast. (the same plan that went out the window when we figured 808 miles was too much to do in Day 1.

I still do a spreadsheet for major trips, but now mostly to plan the approximate daily total distance and time, against our overall travel plan (our daily target is 350-450 miles, closer to 350 preferred). Initially the spreadsheet was for range-assurance to make sure I could "get there". That quickly devolved into lessening the time spent at each supercharger -- at each stop I already know how many Rated Miles I want the battery to be at before unplugging (it's the next RM number, plus whatever buffer I feel comfortable with - usually 20-30 miles). Superchargers have made that so darned easy and quick, the car is usually at that planned limit each stop before we're actually ready to go. Amazing.

In case it helps, here's what I use (it's quite possible I'm preaching to the converted and expert - I apologize!). The key daily totals for me are the mileage (km if Canada trip) in bold black and overall time (driving time + stop time) in bold light blue. Many times checking those numbers has significantly altered our ... exuberance. To our benefit. The Rated Miles / Wh/mi numbers are directly from evtripplanner.

    TripsEg-Reno.jpg

We haven't been on a long trip since the beta nav and trip planning software has been in our car. It will be interesting to see how that operates. I keep the SpC addresses handy anyway, even though they're built in. Habits, I guess.

AEdennis, is your spare a full size tire on a 19" rim? I am surprised that it fits in the frunk. I do not use the frunk often so a spare is a good idea.
  • Jun 6, 2015
    AEdennis
Yup. It was actually the tire that was in my rear driver's side. I had them put the "new" one in the rear driver's side (in the Lyndhurst, OH service center). My regular SoCal service center put it in the rear passenger's side.

Dennis. Love reading about your trip, as I was thinking about driving back to Michigan in the fall for a Michigan state game. Unfortunately, it would probably be solo, with Anna flying to Michigan and meeting me there. But I love driving long distances. Just need to figure out how much time I really want to do this in, if I go.

And do know if a 21" wheel will fit in the trunk? Maybe under inflated?
  • Jun 6, 2015
    AEdennis
    Mark,

Not sure if 21s fit. I think one of the other members of the OC group fit one in, "under inflated, as you mention above.

She should join you for that drive. We had fun, as you can tell from the posts.

Day 10 is another travel day.

As we bid farewell to our family visit in the Cleveland/Akron area, we look forward to our drive toward New Jersey, and the East Coast, today.

You know that your in the East, when driving for over four hundred miles means that you've been to at least four states. Also, lessons learned. Carry lots of cash for the trolls... (I meant tolls.)

Great write up, Dennis. Too bad you were not able to sync up with the Tesla owners here in MD for the Reach the Beach and Hagerstown meetup.

How many days in total were you on the road? I am leaving for CA in exactly 3 weeks from today. Will spend a few days in Custer/Rushmore and outside Denver before heading to TMC Connect. Then down to LA before heading back East. As it stands, we are going to be on the road for 22 days. Looks like we will be hitting a lot of the places you had been and your pictures help.
  • Jun 7, 2015
    AEdennis
    eujinc,

Yup, a few of the Tesla Roadtrip guys and I follow each other on Twitter. But that's what happens when the trip through MD is on Mother's Day... We tried again on the swing back to SoCal.

We were out for 23 days. We originally thought we would be out for about two weeks, but the trip was just too much fun. As for traveling to the areas around Rapid City, check out the thread on teslamotors.com/forums on the roads leading to Lusk, WY (FYI: Lusk, WY inaccessible | Forums | Tesla Motors) being washed out with no ETA before making that drive. Not sure if that was picked up on TMC. There's a link to the Wyoming road info website on that post.

Enjoy yourself on your trip. We're planning to see if we can make TMC Connect this year, not sure yet, as the Belgian club is having an event called Tesla World around the time my wife and I are planning to be in Europe anyway. So, lots of things "in the air" right now.

If you want to see my hints as you traverse through, I spent a lot of time on our routes updating the Teslarati App. So, if you have an iOS device, download and run it there. (I tested it on both iPhone 4s and iPad 3.)
  • Jun 7, 2015
    eujinc
Thanks for the heads up on the situation in Lusk. We will be going by there on 7/5 and will have to keep an eye out on the situation there and plan an alternate route if needed.

Just downloaded the app as well and saw your comments. I will be bookmarking your trip report in my car's browser for references. Good stuff.

Today's Day 10 roadtrip is at a more leisurely pace through New Jersey.

We went to visit two of the superchargers in NJ enroute to an EV Meetup with the NJEAA at Nauna's Bella Casa in Montclair, NJ.

There are lots of other EVs at the meetup in the photos.

I had driven from LA, California to Houston, Texas a few times in the past via the I-10 Corridor.

I am amazed when looked at the map, there is absolutely no charging station pass PHX, Arizona until past San Antonio, TX. That sucks....lol
  • Jun 8, 2015
    AEdennis
The supercharger team just opened the route on I-70 and it looks like part of I-40 is starting to be completed. Having driven the I-10 from Boston to LA, I have to say that I-10 will take much longer, the two days through Texas is TOUGH.

Shortest drive of the trip today (a drive from Northern New Jersey to Long Island, New York.)

We discovered an issue with the seal around the passenger window and went to the Syosset Sales, Service, and Supercharger Center for a supercharge and service. Boy, they're busy at that location. Perhaps Tesla should open another service center for the area.

I lived in Newark, DE for years prior to moving to Las Vegas in 2012, I'm glad you finally had a chance to sleep there! I'm happy to see a supercharger there as well as a brand new travel plaza which is better than the old one for sure! My car arrives in less than a week, getting excited!
  • Jun 9, 2015
    AEdennis
Looking at Twitter and other Social Media, it would seem that I was pretty lucky both times at the Newark, DE supercharger. With only four stalls, it seems to be one that gets full easily. I wonder if Tesla will be expanding that location like they did Barstow, and others.

Congratulations on your new addition. The 70D is a nice ride (had a loaner when I visited the Lyndhurst Sales and Service Center.)

I was trying to see if I could see your route between Newark & Lancaster as I've driven those roads alot. You really have to be careful esp at certain times and days when lots of Amish buggys are out esp before or after church. Oh I'm glad they changed the WV welcome sign. At one point it use to say "Open for Business" but I like "Wild and Wonderful" better. Can I ask what kind of tint and percentage is on your windows? Picking up my 70D in 2 hrs!

Interesting that you chose the Holiday Inn Express over the Hampton Inn at Effingham- While both are near the superchargers, I noticed you have been staying in Hilton Properties much of the time on your trip. Was there something about the Hampton that you didn't like? just curious. I stayed at the Hampton in Effingham the night of the 19th. I guess I was just a little in front of you on my way back to Tucson. I've enjoyed your trip report. Thanks for sharing.

They were sold out for the evening. "No room at the Inn" as the saying goes. We are HHonors Diamond Members, so tend to stay @ Hilton properties, though I was hoping to expand our Hyatt stays on this trip, that didn't happen, just not enough properties where we wanted to stop.

And I'm glad that you're enjoying reading the posts. It's been a fun trip (as well as fun to write on the experience.)

    @TomServo,

It is not recommended to charge to full all the time, but I've been charging to 90% on a daily basis for most the time I've had the car and to max for a bit during the trip. The range stayed at 255 for range charge from the start of the trip throughout. I backed off range charges when the car complained for a charge or two. Back home, I'm closer to the 80-90% charges again.

Cool to know that you would've hung out with us. Maybe next trip. :)
  • Jun 17, 2015
    TexasEV
The car complained? You must be referring to the reminder that you have the charge slider set at 100%. I think the warning comes up if it's left there for three days or so. It's helpful for people who forget to set the charge limit back down after a trip, but don't worry about it if you're on a trip and need the 100% charge. If you're staying at a hotel with a supercharger though it's better to just charge to 90% that evening, move the car to a regular space, then top off your supercharging to 100% in the morning just before you leave so it doesn't sit at 100% overnight.
  • Jun 17, 2015
    AEdennis
Thanks @TexasEV. What we actually started to do for those locations where the supercharger is located at the hotel is to just check in to the hotel when we get there (because we're often in late). When we go down for breakfast and before we get ready, we move the car and SC to full. I put my Plug in America EV Card with my contact information on the dash and go back to get ready.

By the time we're done getting ready, the car is pretty close to full and we just roll off.

We were quick to have attributed the ability to do this journey to Tesla Motors.

As we make the journey West on I-70, we were reminded of the other thing that provided us with the ability to travel so easily from state to state, and that's the US Interstate Highway system, or the Eisenhower Interstate System.

17818441578_72691f2fbc_c.jpg IMG_20150522_171157 by Dennis Pascual, on Flickr

We were surprised to find that the President that championed such an important part of our journey has his Presidential Library and Museum off the route that we're taking West. In Abilene, Kansas.

    So, we stopped.

It seems that "Ike" Eisenhower was also a fellow #EV driver!

Furthermore, we were faced with the elevation changes and inclement weather on our ascent into Denver later in the day and took the time to compare our consumption on this day.

On today's Day 21 of our journey.

There are a lot more pictures than words on Day 22 of our trip. When the view is the majestic Rockies and you go through snow showers in late May, it's hard to put that in words.

Today's Day 23 drive is through the rest of Utah to Nevada then...

With Utah's 80 MPH speed limit on the freeways, they might be a good state to visit for North American Model S owners who like to drive fast. (until they build a landbridge to Europe and folks can drive to the Autobahn from here.)

Welcome Home + 30 Dennis! Glad you had such a great adventure and took the time to share it with us. I especially loved the Pacific photo at the end. A great way to wrap it up. Must have been kismet to sleep in your own bed again though after 23 days!

Thanks @Cyclone. Glad that you enjoyed the trip summaries. Still deciding whether to write about our next few "short" trips to the Bay Area. One of which will be to attend TMC Connect 2015.

    Dennis,
Sorry to be anal. In your wrap-up blog notes, your ocean pix is in York Beach, ME (not VT). Trying to save you the ire of many Mainahs :)
Loved the write-ups and the pix.

As someone who will not be able to attend, I would enjoy reading it. But only do so b/c you want to, not b/c of my readership! :)

AEdennis, just wanted to say thanks for your postings...I really enjoyed reading them, as well as seeing all the pictures of interesting places.

I'll have to see if there's a "If it happens at TMC Connect, it stays at TMC Connect rule (like Vegas) or not"

Glad you enjoyed the trip posts @bmah.

I write about all things EV with more of a Tesla bent to it now, so I encourage you and others to either follow me on twitter or subscribe on the blog. I have the blog set to auto-tweet new posts, the Google Plus version of it is weird in that I'm the only one who can read those posts, so I end up having to delete it and publish manually.

Thanks @Half Dollar Bill. Edited it on the blog post. That was an obvious error on my part.

I will be posting a short-trip that we did this past Thursday (up to Oakland and back on the same day) in a few days, but I just wanted to share the latest post.

It's totally unrelated to this thread, except that it is the reaction to being in the Model S for 23 days straight on our Coast to Coast Adventure.

No, It's not about driving our ICE car. It was the fact that after this long trip, I have been looking forward to driving my wife's Roadster again.

And I finally got the opportunity to do so last Wednesday.

This made me think about the CPO program that we operate under with the Roadster and the CPO program that folks are now purchasing used Model S under.

Granted, this is based on the US models of this same program. But it really is a good deal, with the continuing exception of not providing, in writing, a battery degradation warranty as part of that program.

It also provided me the opportunity to play with both Periscope and Meerkat.

So, if you're interested in these things, and want to see a few short drives through Southern California city streets as shot from a handheld iPhone. Check out my blog post. Mea Culpa, but it was fun.

It looks like Summer 2016 has ended for most, and I haven't published this year's Tesla Roadtrip, until now...

Starting today, 9/12/2016, you can experience our Long Way Round EV trip to the Gigafactory and back, this time two months from the day the trip happened...) I figured that with the start of National Drive Electric Week and a week after the Labor Day Holiday, folks are now trying to forget Summer, and I can't have any of that.

So, if you've enjoyed our 2015 Tesla Roadtrip that was Here, There, and EVerywhere, hope you'll join us and enjoy the Epic 2016 Roadtrip to the Tesla Gigafactory Party known as The Long Way Round!

Here's the view from the side mirrors...

and the view from a nearly empty Supercharger in California.

Subsequent days on this trip will be published on or around 10:00 AM Pacific/1:00 PM Eastern/1800 BST/1900 CET/+1 0300 Sydney/+1 0100 Hong Kong, 2 Months from the day of that summary.

If memory serves me from our trip, that's Manteca?
Seemed like it WAS empty, then I spied the X in the shade :)

That's why I said "nearly" empty...

And you ARE correct... Manteca it was
