omarsultan Just tweeted by Elon:
Model 3 reservations ($1000 down) will be accepted in Tesla stores on March 31 and online April 1

ryanjm Elon also just confirmed: no Signature series.
Elon Musk on Twitter:
No Signature Red paint. I really, really wanted it. :-(

esk8mw Shutupandtakemymoney.jpeg
i don't really understand how this works, though. If the unveiling is on the 31st, how are in store reservations supposed to work? Reservations sight unseen? Early day launch party?
- - - Updated - - -
This is the medias fault. If they weren't so inept or malicious (your choice) when printing the sig series cost as the base model cost, I bet we would have a go at sigs. Can't have nice things.
Feb 10, 2016
omarsultan Maybe, in keeping with the for-the-masses vibe, they will have unwilling parties at all the stores instead of a single event for the rich and famous?
Feb 10, 2016
ankitmishra Awesome.
Feb 10, 2016
vinnie97 Shiz seems to be getting (more) real. BUT, April 1st can't be the best day to start accepting online reservations.

Feb 10, 2016
ankitmishra There is a very high chance that people are going to line outside the stores to get early reservation. Or am I wrong?
Feb 11, 2016
Josh the German Will a reservation be possible for everyone from everywhere in the world or US first?
Regards from Germany
Josh
Feb 11, 2016
ryanjm He said global.
Feb 11, 2016
Josh the German Thanks a lot Ryan. I haven't read it and no experience reserving a Tesla. Have a nice day ...
Regards from Germany

Feb 11, 2016
Az_Rael Alright I will be in on April 1st (really, April fools day?). I was gonna hold off and be prudent about this, but with the reservation only at $1000 I am going to throw caution to the wind and reserve a spot.
This will be the first time I have ever put $$ down on a car sight unseen and un-test driven. Should be a fun experience
Sooo..... what time do you think the website will go live? Midnight PST? 8AM PST?
Feb 11, 2016
ImEric Good point. I will be in a store on March 31st, first thing in the morning. Now I kind of wish that I lived on the East Coast, just so I could get into a store 3 hours earlier. And at $1k, I WILL be making to pre-orders.
- - - Updated - - -
Knowing Tesla, it'll go live around 11:53pm PST.
Feb 11, 2016
houdini I am expecting this isn't really global as down here in Oz it'll be the 31st before the US 31st.
Feb 11, 2016
Lycanthrope $1000 only, I'm in! If the options appear to be too much, I'm sure the reservation can be delayed a bit to the less specced cars...
Feb 11, 2016
Spidy No, it's Tesla's fault for not releasing any other numbers than that signature price. The only thing that came at some point was a tweet from Elon about 5k more than a Model S. All Tesla has to do is put the configurator online in time, even if it's just a demo to play around.
Feb 11, 2016
Model 3 It doesnt have to be one or the other. They will have a single event "for the rich and famous" - or just invitedAND they may have "unwilling parties" at the local stores showing the real party online on big screen and maybe even a prototype (in some shops) to look at?

Feb 11, 2016
EMdoc12 Well I'll be out of town on the 31st but luckily there is a tesla gallery where I'm going. I don't really think there will be big lines like for iPhones but that being said I won't be waiting either. 1k day one for me.
Feb 11, 2016
YBT I'll be reserving on April 1. Even if I cancel it down the road I will feel good about having given Elon a loan to get this thing on the road. Hopefully he let's me ride in the BEV Millenium Falcon replica in the lair under his house.
Feb 11, 2016
ItsNotAboutTheMoney Will Tesla turn down money because it's foreign? No.
Tempted to reserve, but possibility that it disappears, but questions remain about Tesla's walled garden. But I do have play money that I could flush down a bankruptcy drain...
Feb 11, 2016
Cattledog My guess is it will go live across the US at least when they have the reveal event at Hawthorne so that those attending the event either get first crack or equal crack (that sounds bad) at making reservations.
Feb 11, 2016
DavidM This will initiate the auto industry disruption that everybody has been talking about. Huge numbers of consumers standing with Tesla. I love it.
Feb 11, 2016
CaptainKirk Well, I'm kind of disappointed if I'm not able to get Signature Red as a car color. That doesn't matter much in the long run, off to the races on March 31st, gonna put down 2 deposits anyways! I too think that the reservation numbers are going to be make the auto Marques very unhappy on April 1st

Feb 11, 2016
fword101 I expect the car to be shown to the public during the evening of March the 31st. So does that mean you can reserve the car before the actual reveal?
That's kinda stupid, I want to see the car before I put my reservation in. I wanna make sure it doesn't look like a Prius before I make a reservation.
Feb 11, 2016
ItsNotAboutTheMoney What if it looked gorgeous but drove like a Prius?
Feb 11, 2016
WarpedOne What if it came without car seats?
There is this thing called "credo". Tesla is no prius.
Feb 11, 2016
Tezlah I'm shocked that the reservation is only $1,000 and is the same price for all. I haven't had a chance to listen to the earnings call yet, but I know Elon mentioned that higher spec versions would be made/fulfilled first.
Now the decision for many will be: If I want to order a $35,000 spec Model 3, I might be forced to wait until late 2018 or likely longer and miss out on the full $7,500 tax credit. OR Do order a $42,500 spec Model 3, get delivery in early 2018 and qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit. Either way, I effectively pay $35,000 for the car.
Feb 11, 2016
zag2me Share price has just gone wild for this, its so tempting just to go reserve with that small amount of money, its a good price for us "normal" car buyers.
Feb 11, 2016
phigment I'm pretty sure the stock price increase is due to the 2015 earnings report released yesterday. The downfall this morning is due to the poor European macro stock performance.
Feb 11, 2016
Bimbels +1 - As a shareholder I am happy with this approach. I was worried Sigs would again "confuse" the media - and with their current no advertising (though Elon did say on the call that that could change with the Model 3) the buzz this generates is going to be fun to watch.
Feb 11, 2016
fword101 Well the ride quality is important too but not that important. I think there will be reviews of the car before you finalize your order so if it's really, really bad I might cancel my order.
If it looks like **** I wouldn't reserve it even if it drove like a Ferrari.
Feb 11, 2016
zkmusa Looking forward to placing a reservation.
I live in Texas, where Tesla is not allowed to sell directly. I'm assuming I won't be able to place a reservation at one of their stores (Tesla Galleries) on March 31st, and will instead need to place the reservation April 1st?
Feb 11, 2016
fword101 Unless you travel out of state, right?
Feb 11, 2016
MrRandyB Wondering the same here.
There is no Tesla Gallery here in Delaware, I was going to go up to the King of Prussia, PA gallery.
Feb 11, 2016
Cebe I'm sure they will have "Special Edition(s)" down the road to make up for not having "Signature Edition" to start. Also, who said that there won't be a color choice to match Signature Red, maybe even be called that, but available to all.
Feb 11, 2016
bollar We have been told that Galleries will take deposits in Texas!
Feb 11, 2016
DFibRL8R So will there be a limit on reservations? One per customer or can someone show up and reserve 40?
Feb 11, 2016
tga I suspect that's exactly what Tesla hopes will happen. Remember the lines outside of Apple stores on product release days? They're probably hoping for similar lines at stores and galleries around the country. What great promotion!
Feb 11, 2016
Trev Page I really wanted Sig red too... Maybe they will have a few more colours to chose from though for the 3
Feb 11, 2016
model3fan Will be interested in details about placing reservation in stores on 31st in the coming weeks.. if it will be when stores open, before the reveal, etc. If they're not doing sig series, how will they fulfill the higher spec'd ones first? Open up ordering for first batch of X reservation holders, and then wait and see what users pick and build for those who pick higher specs first? Seems complicated.
Feb 11, 2016
ratsbew Yeah, and people will get to see the beautiful Model S/X in the showrooms. Many Model 3 customers may have never seen a Model S up close and in person. This is going to be YUGE!
Feb 11, 2016
gregincal I will be interested as well. The only thing that makes sense to me is that they show the reveal live at all the showrooms and open it up for reservations simultaneously everywhere (perhaps people get sequence numbers earlier in the day or something). The other question is the timing of the reveal. With this system it makes sense to do a morning reveal like Apple always does rather than Tesla's normal evening reveal.
Feb 11, 2016
vjason Had to laugh, asked if the Raleigh showroom would be taking reservations and the sales guy said "Based on a tweet by our CEO....".
Normal business hours so far that day; will have to see if that changes as things get closer. As of right now all his info came from what Elon tweeted.
Feb 11, 2016
DavidM I guarantee you that Tesla will receive numerous deposits from Fleets. It could be 5 to 50 cars or more from a fleet customer.
Feb 11, 2016
ggies07 hahaha, that's hilarious.
Feb 11, 2016
AnOutsider Woot, def going to put down a reservation, though not 100% sure we'll get one to replace the S (better to be prepared than end up at the back of the list).
Not sure blame should be placed here, but if we were, then you should put a portion of that at Tesla's feet for not being "ready" when they said they were. If they were, they would've had production pricing out as well. The media reported on all they had to go on (though, some do deserve a big FAIL in not specifying it's for the fully loaded sig).
*edit* woops I guess I was beat to it (didn't see we had 5 pages)
i don't really understand how this works, though. If the unveiling is on the 31st, how are in store reservations supposed to work? Reservations sight unseen? Early day launch party?

Feb 11, 2016
wallet.dat So will the build/option sheet be available on March 31? I mean how would we know what options, such as dual-motor AWD, if this is truly a sight-unseen deposit?
Feb 11, 2016
Bimbels No it won't. You will be invited to configure after the launch (note, launch, not reveal) and choose your options then. If you have changed your mind, you can simply get a refund.
Feb 11, 2016
dhanson865 no build/option sheet but there will be a reveal of some sort, a car driven on stage, a presentation, a discussion of the plan going forward minus any details they want to hide from GM/Nissan/and such.
If you put the $1000 down, you'll have time to pull out or configure and confirm later when they are ready to start building production cars.
Just read the model x threads about all the people that put way more money down and just configured their car after waiting several years.
Feb 11, 2016
Canuck I'm definitely in. Good on Tesla for making it a nominal deposit. By the time I get it, my family's Leaf will be ready for retirement.
Feb 11, 2016
Lonnie123 $1,000 is right where I thought it would be, very nice. In it to win it on Mach 31'st
Just requested to have this be one of my days off in March... Anyone else live near the Cathedral City service center?? We can split food run duties if it runs long ;-)
Feb 11, 2016
omarsultan So, if they follow past practice, the $1000 is fully refundable, so there is not really any risk here if you blindly put the money down on the 31st. I think maybe they will do a a reveal earlier in the day, during normal business hours, webcast like they did with the MX reveal, so you can check things out before heading to the store.
Feb 11, 2016
Foxhound199 I'm wondering if lines will start forming before the reveal even happens! I suppose I could watch it on my phone...
Feb 11, 2016
palmer_md I was going to wait at my local service center and hand the guy a check as he unlocks the door for business at 10am. How are these in person deposits at the service centers going to be sorted? Is there someone on site who will enter it into a computer and that will time stamp my deposit? Will folks on the east coast have a 3 hour head start in placing deposits this way? I'm just curious since it does not really matter to me to be first, but as long as my place in line is on the first day, I'm good with that.
Feb 11, 2016
gregincal I doubt people on the east coast will have a 3 hour head start, because I would imagine reservations will open everywhere right after the reveal.
Feb 11, 2016
strider My guess is the reveal event will be the evening of 30 March - those folks will be able to reserve there. Then Stores start taking reservations the next morning and on-line at midnight (take a guess as to time zone) on the 1st. Do we know for sure the reveal will be at Hawthorne? I'm hoping it's at the factory.
- - - Updated - - -
Not true. Elon tweeted that store reservations on 3/31 and online on 4/1.
Feb 11, 2016
MikeBur Will service centers be able to do this. My reading of the "announcement" was stores and galleries on 3/31 and online on my birthday ;-)
Feb 11, 2016
ModelNforNerd Not sure why everyone is worried about when they'll be able to put money down...
It doesn't matter so much that you're #1 in line, if you buy the "stripper" setup.
If I come in 2 hours after you and order a loaded one...I'm getting mine first.
Feb 11, 2016
palmer_md I don't think there will be many orders for the "stripper" model. I'm planning to hit the "Max my 3" button on the order page when the time comes.
Feb 11, 2016
omarsultan I am sure this will be an adventure for both purchases and the staff at the Tesla stores.
I wonder, however, if they will not just sit you down in front of an iMac, like they do today and you do everything via the website. I gotta believe physically taking payment and executing an agreement in the store crosses some sort of legal line.
Feb 11, 2016
eloder Why? I've done it for non-Tesla cars before that weren't yet released.
Feb 11, 2016
Lonnie123 I didnt realize you could buy one that came with one of those ;-) Is that a per hour rental, or you get the stripper for the life of the car?
Feb 11, 2016
ModelNforNerd
Maybe because of the dealership issues....
When I pre-ordered my Audi 2 years ago, I put $500 down and configured it there. I had the option of backing out at any time. But again, the dealership vs. gallery distinction probably makes that "hazy" in some states.
Feb 11, 2016
gregincal ???? The reveal is on 3/31. Reservations start in store on 3/31 right after the reveal. What's the problem?
(Perhaps you thought that by everywhere I meant in-store and online at the same time. I just meant that in-store reservations start everywhere at the same time.)
Feb 11, 2016
danp I think people are just starting to grasp the brilliance of this reveal. With so much pent up interest (pretty sure all of us here know at least a handful of people who are eagerly waiting for the Model 3), and in-store only orders the first day, it has the potential to explode, with lines and people camping out at each store, with media attention, etc. A few days in, Elon tweets that they've received some huge number of reservations, the stock takes a big jump, etc.
Can't wait.
Feb 11, 2016
tracksyde I lol'd (and I dont use 'lol' lightly)
Feb 11, 2016
JPUConn I'll be putting a deposit or two down for sure purely as a sign of support for the company.
I can't help but think of the possible time value of money at play here. Just like those who dropped $40k on an X reservation that if otherwise invested in TSLA stock at the time would have been worth 4-6x original investment at time of delivery. Adding $1k to my TSLA shares right now could exponentially increase of tesla hits targets on the 3. Fortunately it's $1k at play here and not $40 so more folks can hedge their bet and both invest and deposit!
Feb 11, 2016
RubberToe There is a 100% chance. I can guarantee this because I am posting while washing my sleeping bag at the laundromat...
Now if only the SBUX 4 stores down Colorado Bl stayed open all night. Actually, no caffeine will be needed since I'll be pondering the fact that I will be ordering a Tesla in a few short hours. Might need a couple Valium come to think of it.
RT
Feb 11, 2016
HankLloydRight I really don't think people are going to be camping out. It's not an iPhone you get your hands on right away to be the first one to get it. And even then, not a lot of details about the car will be actually revealed. It's not like they're actually going on sale that day and people can walk out with actual product.
You get to put $1000 down on a car you'll get in 2 years time, and based on the config you want, you may or may not get it "first". You might get it MONTHS after they start regular deliveries.
There's no sense or benefit of "camping out" or "waiting in line". Sure, go to the reveal, and put down a deposit, but there's absolutely no reason to be in line all day just to get a low Reservation number.
Feb 11, 2016
McHoffa Bummed that they're doing the in store reservations a day before online. I am 150 miles from the nearest Tesla store, and it's not like this is on a weekend when I could find an excuse to make a weekend trip. I was hoping to be one of the first in line. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait a little longer.
Feb 11, 2016
HankLloydRight But what does being first in line at a local gallery (competing with hundreds of other galleries) actually get you? EM already said they're not going to make cars in Reservation order. Waiting one day to reserve online isn't going to change your position much at all, depending on the config you choose -- sometime in 2017!!
Feb 11, 2016
CaptainKirk Remember, the higher optioned cars are going to be built first. It shouldn't matter how you place a reservation, unless you want to be the first of a first to get a maxed out car.
Edit: Hank beat me to it
Feb 11, 2016
Red Sage I expect there will be no less than 250,000 Reservations by October 1, 2017.
Feb 11, 2016
HankLloydRight <Maxswell Smart>
Missed it by that |--| much
</>
Feb 11, 2016
strider I did misunderstand you - I interpreted "everywhere" to be on-line.
Do we know that the reveal is on 3/31? They typically do those things (reveals/parties) in the evenings so I would think reveal/party on the evening of 3/30 with reservations starting at stores the morning of 3/31.
Feb 11, 2016
gregincal That would make the most sense, but the shareholder letter stated that the reveal would be on the 31st. Elon's tweet stating that there would be in store reservations on the 31st came later. We'll see how it will actually work.
Feb 11, 2016
Twiglett maybe they will be doing "reveal parties" at the stores so you can put the reservation down then.
Who knows, no doubt there will be one or two more tweets from Elon about this before the day.
Feb 11, 2016
McHoffa I'm planning maxed out or close to it so I guess it will be toward the front either way.
Feb 11, 2016
James Chan I'll be in HK, half day ahead, does that mean I'll get a head start? (considering they let me pre-order for Canada)
Feb 11, 2016
ryanjm Maybe Sig Red will be offered as an option for anyone during the first year of production, or maybe even as a "pre-order bonus", i.e. anyone who places a deposit by [INSERT DATE HERE] gets access to Sig Red if they want to order it. Pre-order bonuses happen all the time in the video game world...
If not I'll settle for multi-coat red (hopefully they'll offer it!).
Feb 11, 2016
Lonnie123 Sig Red seems to be the most talked about color by a large margin (almost no one talks about any other color really), I'd be surprised if they didn't offer it to some amount of people. Maybe something like everyone who configures in 2017, so they can update the website on Jan 1 2018 and just be done with it
Feb 11, 2016
danp That would be the rational expectation, but I think the Model 3 is going to tap into the Millenials' rejection of the (automotive & fossil fuel) establishment in a way similar to the Bernie movement. It's going to be almost a bragging right to have a Model 3 reservation, and be (relatively) first in line, even with the understanding that higher optioned configs will come first.
Or perhaps I've just had too many glassed of wine tonight.
Feb 11, 2016
Az_Rael My experience with millenials (at least here in CA) is they don't want cars at all. EV makes no difference. My coworkers have kids that are all millenials. One didn't want to take her drivers license test at all - didn't see the point (she failed when she was forced to go). His son didn't do his until he was 18 because he didn't care. My other coworkers kids (in their late 20s) are just now thinking about maybe buying a car. And its a chore they don't really want to do. Its all pretty incomprehensible to me, a Gen X'er who counted down the days until I was old enough to get my permit. Back then a car meant freedom. Now social media does.
They would rather just take Ubers and not deal with it. Maybe they will care about a Tesla and think its cool, but paying that much will still be well out of their budget.
The people who WILL be buying model 3's are techies and green-oriented folks who are in the entry-level luxury market and can afford to buy a "experimental" car. More likely to be closer to their 40s and higher vs their 20s I would guess.
Feb 12, 2016
Lonnie123 Thats crazy... I use my car ~20 times a week at least (4-5 errands a day some times), not really sure how that would work with Uber. Hell, I get out of work at midnight. I could understand if everyone was working online these days, but are they?
- 5 day a week job = 5 round trip rides (Just checked: it would be $14 ONE WAY for an uber to my job, yikes. $100/week, and I only work 3 days/week, $150 for 5 days... $600 month to uber my way to work)
- Grocery shopping = 3-6 rides ($10 round trip to the store 1 mile from my house... $20-60 weekly. I actually walk this right now, but it takes like 60 minutes round trip and I dont have kids, not everyone can do that)
- misc = 4-10 rides (go to movies, gym, friends, family, etc... $100+ weekly easily)
I dont really see the massive savings of using Uber as your primary form of transportation for a "regular" life.
I get it if you're visiting a town and need a ride from your hotel to a function... but for daily life it just doesnt seem convenient. How do you do anything further than 30 minutes away from your house? Looking at these rates now it just doesnt really seem as reasonable as I've heard it to be, and the drivers cant be making all that much from it either.
More power to them if it works and they save a bunch of money that way some how, but it doesnt seem to be a viable alternative to having your own car.
Oh well... Every Uber user is One less person to compete with for a reservation ;-)
Feb 12, 2016
Red Sage Heh. I'm one of those guys who's rather blessed, in that though I'll turn 50 next year, most would be hard pressed to guess I might be 25-30. The so-called 'millennials' tend to think they are older and more experienced than I am. I am indeed a geek, a dweeb, a nerd, a dork, and whatever else, absolutely tech oriented. But all my Nieces and Nephews absolutely adore driving and couldn't wait for the opportunity to do so. Yes, there are those who are incredibly over-protected, to the point they can barely ride a bike or roller-skates... Because they are propped on the couch playing videogames all the time and have no actual experience with 'playing' in the real world. Others are perpetually captivated, or 'captured' perhaps, by their mobile devices. Often to the point of not seeing anything around them, ever. I hold out faith that at least around Los Angeles, where public transit is nowhere near where it should be for a metropolitan area, most kids will somehow learn how to drive, or at least have cars that drive better than their parents do, some day.
Feb 12, 2016
houdini My question exactly. I will have a 10 hour head start at least

Feb 12, 2016
Red Sage I want to know if there will be a layaway plan.
Feb 12, 2016
houdini He said Global! Problem is 9am on the 31st in Melbourne is on the US 30th. If the reveal is 1pm on the US 31st it would be 8am or something here, so maybe the store is going to stay open late on the 31st here and still be open for the reveal in the USA??

Feb 12, 2016

vinnie97 Me too...I'm needy like that.
Feb 12, 2016
McHoffa Yeah, you won't see a thing about the 3 until after the reveal. Even then, probably not much. A full page and pictures of the X were added to the site right after the original reveal back in 2012.
Feb 12, 2016
omarsultan Exactly. Non-Tesla cars are sold through locally franchised dealers. Up to this point, even if you head into the Tesla store, you end up making the purchase and exciting your reservation online. If you go into the store on 3/31 and they still park you in front of an iMac, then nothing changes. If they are taking payments and executing the reservation agreement in the store, I wonder if some states would object to that as dealer-like behavior.
Feb 12, 2016
strider During or soon after the reveal there will be a page with photos and a link to order. Nothing until then. Considering they have teslamotors.com/models and teslamotors.com/modelx I'd safely assume the URL will be teslamotors.com/model3 Or the current Reserve link for a Model X is: teslamotors.com/reserve?source=modelx-features0 so maybe replace the x with a 3 in that URL?
