proven Does anyone know how well the glossy seat backs hold up to scratches? I know at the reveal event in September they were covered in fingerprints, but I'm afraid of my kid's shoes scratching them up. Do any current owners have experience they'd like to share?
I've heard of a few people wanting to get the seat backs wrapped in Xpel (or similar product). Is that worth it and how much do you think that would cost typically?
Feb 8, 2016
proven Nobody has any scratches yet?
Feb 8, 2016
Zythryn Very few people have the X yet, much less scratches.
It is the one thing I don't like about the car. I'm hoping we can get some sort of wrap for the back of the seats.
Feb 8, 2016
Mark Z My Disney friends who design ride vehicles were concerned with the Model X interior; they announced it wouldn't remain looking good with guests entering and exiting. Detailers mentioned it is a "show car" and recommended clear bra protective wraps.
The quick solution could be for the kids to remove their shoes. However, it would be wise to ensure that the 2nd row seat movers are operating properly and have no gaps at the moving plates. Safety first, so IMHO, it would be best for the shoes to remain on. Would you consider putting blue protective booties on the kids shoes? Disposable Shoe Covers :: Disposable Apparel :: eSafety Supplies, Inc.
On earlier threads I mentioned Con-Tact Brand - Creative Covering - Black. Various colors can be found on this page: Con-Tact Brand | Shop
The challenge are the curved surfaces, and the entire bottom surround of the 2nd row seats are in the shiny black plastic. Chrome trim adds to the beauty and the possible damage that can occur as the trims are scratched or accidentally detached.
The great news is that the driver and passenger front row seats have a softer surface at the bottom rear portion. That will help IF the kids in the 2nd row keep their feet under the seat in front. If they put their feet higher up on the shiny seat backs, then protection should be considered. The rear row seats face 100% shiny black plastic. The back of the 2nd row and the wheel wells are a challenge to keep scuff free.
This situation may be answered by 3rd party solutions, but how much money do you want to spend? Would it be cheaper to have Tesla replace the damaged surfaces at trade-in time? If you are leasing, how much damage will Tesla accept? Interesting questions and I hope that Tesla Motors considers a ruggedized version of Model X in the future.
Feb 8, 2016
elguapo Someone folded their third row seat when the second row was back a bit too far and they scratched their second row back. FarmerDave has his grandkids take off their shows. Someone else got the backs wrapped with XPel.
Bottom line - if you don't want them scratched, protect them. They're plastic and they'll get scratched. I've got three little ones and they always know how to break something...
Feb 8, 2016
ABCCBA Nobody (very few) have a Model X. I have been in communications with one of the TMC group sponsors and am planning on wrapping the backs of the seats to minimize scratches and blemishes from fingerprints, scuffs and scratches. As a matter of fact, we are going to wrap the entire car, too. For what we are spending on the car, the whole car wrap just makes sense to preserve its beauty. Again, we are waiting on the darn 22" Black Onyx wheels before we get ours, like so many others. JMHO
Feb 8, 2016
elguapo I agree, as it relates to wrapping to protect the investment. The only issue is the cost ($5,000+/-), plus the 4 year service plan ($1,800 or so), plus extended warranty ($4,000 or so) and you quickly get to an additional $10,000+ on the car...
Feb 8, 2016
proven Some good thoughts here, thanks.
Our kids are small, 5 & 4, so their feet will be up high. Requiring shoes to be off is a good temporary solution, but the odds of always remembering would be slim.
I'm strongly considering something like Xpel, but it would be nice to hear from someone who had it done already. I realize not many people have their car yet, but there are numerous posts with people saying they've taken delivery, so it's not like I'm talking to no one!
elguapo: do you know who got the backs wrapped with Xpel?
Feb 8, 2016
shive I have been using Brica Kickmats for the backs of the front seats and 2nd row (also use them in our S). That said, I will probably also look into some sort of 3rd party covering given the super shiny nature of the seat backs.

Feb 8, 2016
Dalia Oh great idea. While shopping for those, I also found these: Amazon.com: BRICA Seat Guardian Car Seat Protector: Baby
Thoughts? Am I losing the look of the Model X?
Feb 8, 2016
proven Personally, I don't like the idea of losing the look of the seats which is why I'm interested in Xpel or similar product.
Feb 8, 2016
MsElectric I bet this does the job but IMHO really takes away from the design aesthetics of the car.
Too bad they did not finish the seat backs in a durable matte finish, especially considering the intended market.

Feb 8, 2016
PeterK I've never seen/felt the seats in person, and am leaning towards putting Xpel or something on them just because of the idea of my kids with them. The backs of the seats in my S are kicked regularly.
But the people at Tesla aren't dumb, and many must have children - even the guy at the top has five young boys. Could it be that this is a shiny but extremely tough and durable material that resists scuffs and scratches?
Feb 8, 2016
shive Do the kickmats take away from the look...absolutely. I couldn't agree more. I'm still trying to figure out what to cover them with and until then, this seems to work. I'm meeting this weekend with the guys that did my wrap, so I will ask them their thoughts on how best to protect the surface.
Feb 8, 2016
FarmerDave
My Xpel installer did a partial install on the seat backs for $100 each. I still take my granddaughter's shoes off when I load her into the safety seat, though.

Feb 9, 2016
bws Do you think you could 'sand' them to give them a matte look which would make scuffs much harder to detect?

proven Now that more people have their X, anyone have any experience with scratches or the general durability of the glossy seat backs?
Mar 10, 2016
QQQ Shive - Off topic but could you let me know what carseat you are using? That looks very nice with MX.
Mar 10, 2016
Vizir They do look very nice indeed. Am interested in knowing about them, too.
Mar 10, 2016
disagree They're made by Clek. We've use their latch boosters for years. Good quality stuff.
clekinc.com
Mar 10, 2016
QQQ Thanks! Ohmman/disagree
Mar 10, 2016
shive Yes, someone beat me to it. They are Clek seats and when the kids are older and no longer need the seat backs (and just the booster part), the back comes off. They are well made. On another note, I did end up getting my seat backs covered in Xpel and the car looks much nicer without the Brica seatback covers. He also did place a piece of Xpel on the center armrest console wood inlay (front cup holder thingy) as that area is also scratch-prone. Will post pics if anyone is interested.
Mar 10, 2016
proven Pics would be great! Thanks. We're taking delivery soon and with two young kids I'm really considering getting Xpel on the seat backs.
Mar 10, 2016
andrewket In progress...
Will post pics when done.

Mar 10, 2016
Darryl Retail price of the Xpel kits for the four seat backs is over $500. So it depends on where you buy them and where you have them installed. Since I am having a lot of work done at the same time my installer is charging me his price.
Mar 10, 2016
ohmman Yes! Looking forward to it. I want to do matte, if possible.
Mar 10, 2016
CurrentRide I am thinking about the 3M carbon fiber vinyl wrap, which goes for something like $2.50 per sq ft, assuming a reasonable match to the matte CF trim.
Mar 11, 2016
proven Well I just scheduled the Xpel seat backs with a local dealer. They've done one X already with the seat backs. I'll let you all know how it turns out--picking up X next week (hopefully) and on the schedule for the following week for the Xpel.
Mar 11, 2016
highedu done?
Mar 11, 2016
aesculus I would like to see what this looks like when you are done.
Mar 11, 2016
andrewket Done.. And it looks great. Will post pics shortly.
Mar 11, 2016
ohmman Awesome. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to know how you sourced the material and what you paid (approximately).
Mar 11, 2016
proven If you want to do it yourself it looks like you can purchase the kits directly from Xpel
Mar 11, 2016
andrewket Mine were custom cut. The 1st row seats are seamless. You can't see the film.

Mar 11, 2016
ohmman Andrew, they look great. Really impressive.
I am leaning more towards a matte finish, so I may go to a 3M wrap. But keep us informed on how these tolerate abuse.
Mar 11, 2016
highedu Thanks for posting....how much did it cost if you don't mind?
Mar 12, 2016
SCModelX Anyone have photos of matte film seat back? I'd love to see pics, as this is what I think I want
Mar 22, 2016

Mar 22, 2016
PeterK Nice. Cost?
Mar 22, 2016
proven The four seats cost us $400. Considering the kit from Xpel costs over $600 I thought it was a good deal.
Mar 22, 2016
PeterK Agree.
Mar 22, 2016
ohmman I'd jump on it for that price, even though I'm hoping to wrap them in a matte finish. They look great!
Mar 22, 2016
Pjjava34 Silly question...but does or can Xpel dealers do matte finishes on seat backs or are all Xpel products in the shiny finishes?
Mar 22, 2016
ohmman Not a silly question - I spent a bit of time trying to research exactly this. From what I can tell, Xpel is all shiny/glossy. 3M offers some vehicle wraps that are matte or screen printed - they appear to be quite durable and they're cheaper. There is an installer near me and that's the route I'm likely to go for the seat backs. While I think the Xpel applications in this thread and others look fabulous, it's possible it's overkill if all you want is a matte protection for your seats.
Mar 22, 2016
pvogel There is a matte version of XPEL called XPEL stealth, see here Paint Protection | XPEL
Mar 22, 2016
K-MTG I am so unfamiliar with this stuff. I never installed this plastic protector on any of my cars, I just get them waxed occasionally. The only after market application for me is tint.
What is XPEL? Is it a brand? From what I seen here, it appears to be like a invisible shield for the car? Is it something that is really needed? I never had any paint damage to any of cars unless someone hit me
Mar 23, 2016
grommet No, it's not "needed." -- people lived happily without it. But some like the protection. Feel free to read the marketing: Paint Protection | XPEL - and yes, there are other competitors.
Mar 23, 2016
Pjjava34 Great insight as always. Thanks @ohmman
Mar 23, 2016
pvogel XPEL has a 'satin' finish version of their film. They all offer varying finishes.
Mar 23, 2016
rdalcanto If it is "needed" depends a lot on where you live. In Utah, where they salt/sand the roads for 5 months of the year, and your windshield is completely pitted after 2-3 years, having paint protection is "needed" if you don't want the paint finish ruined on the front of your car. Windshields are easy to replace every few years.
Mar 23, 2016
vandacca Of course it's not "needed". But I've seen people make the argument that today's environmentally friendly paint is "softer" than previous paints and they are more likely to be damaged. Hence the growing popularity of these wraps.
Mar 23, 2016
proven One other thing they did was add a strip of Xpel on the aluminum foot plate at the entrance to the second row. He said the service manager at our SC saw an X with that part scratched and you could see the aluminum silver under the paint.
Mar 23, 2016
satheesh.net Has anyone thought of spraying it with Plasti Dip? Pro, cons?
Jun 8, 2016
SeanA Nice! Mine are set to be wrapped tomorrow with Xpel. I was concerned because the Xpel pattern for the seatback causes a seam along the curved edge. Did yours? Is it noticeable?

Jun 8, 2016
proven In my second picture you can see the edge of the Xpel. My installer did not use the patterns from Xpel so it may be different than mine. The edge/seam is really not that noticeable, but you can feel it easily. Most people have no idea it's on there.
Jun 8, 2016
jomo25 Paid $80 per seat.
Jun 8, 2016
SeanA Interesting. What was used? That is less than half what most Xpel/Suntek folks are charging.
Jun 8, 2016
indy360 I gave up immediately in terms of keeping the seat back looking glossy and nice. With 2 kids (one 5 years old and one 2.5) it's going to be futile keeping it clean. And guess what? I ended up not caring at all and I feel so much better. Anyway, it's actually holding up quite well. The kids keep their shoes on and they love putting their shoes on the back of the seat, but it's mostly just dirt on there and it wipes off easily. No major scratches yet after two months. Obviously everyone's tolerance is different but it really is not that big of a deal.
Jun 8, 2016
BrianD @ohmman - Did you end up going with a matte wrap? I'm curious how yours turned out.
Jun 8, 2016
ohmman I still haven't. One of my seat backs is slated for replacement due to a scratch at delivery, and I've been waiting on that before taking it in for the wrap. Of course, in the meantime we're probably scratching them all up, so that likely wasn't the best course of action. Honestly, I looked at them the other day and they still look fine. Like @indy360, I'm not worrying too much about it for now. But I do still want to wrap them eventually.
Jun 9, 2016
xkwizit I got @XPEL glossy done on my seats when I got the car covered. It was I think 300 something for four seats plus the third row head rests.
The thing I really like about the gloss finish is that you can't make out that something is installed on the seats. It just blends in with the shiny seat backs.
Jun 9, 2016
skarletknite if it's the clek oober, it doesn't fit in the model x second row (the 6 seat config). u can't buckle it. i have (two) maxi cosi rodifix boosters and i verify they fit in the second row just fine.
Jun 11, 2016
elguapo Mine used XPel pattern for seats and they look awesome. The curvature makes it impossible to use one solid piece of wrap.
Also, about $90/seat. I am on East Coast, where prices seem far more reasonable than the places on West Coast, for whatever reason.
I also put XPel on door sills, but that was just for looks. All was done glossy.
My kids would've destroyed my $130,000 car quickly without some of the protection I've put in place.
Jun 11, 2016
elguapo I use the Clek Fllo car seat and it fits with extra room on sides. Great seat.

Sean So Lowe How long on average was the install of the Expel on the back of the seats? Did U have to leave the car over night or was it dropped off and picked back up in a few hours?
Jun 21, 2016
SeanA I had the entire front of my X (bumper, hood, fenders, foglights, headlights, rear view mirrors) and the seats done in one day. I'd imagine a pro would get just the seats done in half a day. My guy (Derek at Atlanta Protective Films) added a nice touch of wrapping the aluminum kickplates, too. They are the plates you step on getting into and out of the car.
Jun 21, 2016
Sean So Lowe That's what all I'd like to get done. I just don't like the idea of leaving my car someplace over night. Plus the closest place is an hour and a half away.
Jun 21, 2016
elguapo It should take a day if they start first thing in the morning.
Jun 21, 2016
Roentgen Agree with elguapo. Entire front end (no edges visible) and seat backs all done in one day at a quality establishment.
Jul 3, 2016
ssq See the scuff on the bottom left of the headrest in the second picture? This is within 3 days of owning the X and likely due to folding down the third row with the second row pushed back.. :/
I got these samples of suntek satin and xpel stealth to decide which one to go with.
The first pic is xpel stealth and the second one suntek. I think xpel stealth has a nicer finish so the curves and contours are more pronounced.![]()

Jul 4, 2016
fderheide I got these Brica seat protectors and they cover the seat belt receptacles. So I modified them by cutting out the inside corners with a box cutter. So they work well and will protect the seat from my car seats and basic spills.
As for the glossy seat backs. My assumption here is the paint is on the inside of the surface. I have one scratch on the third row and it is not in paint but looks like a scratch in plastic. Can anyone confirm they are painted on the inside of clear plastic?
Jul 4, 2016
Scrith Mine are getting seriously abused, but they always clean up well. I'm starting to think getting them wrapped is unnecessary.
Jul 4, 2016
grommet Scratches can even be polished out fairly easily, FYI. I do still think it was a poor choice by Tesla. Style before functionality. Wrap vendors are happy, though.

Jul 5, 2016
vandacca I was planning to also do the matte wrap finish of the back seats. However, my guy talked me out of it because he said that if scratches develop, the gloss finish can be easily buffed out. With the matte finish, you can't buff it out and still have it match the rest of the seat back.
Does anyone have any thoughts or comments whether this is accurate (or not)?
Jul 5, 2016
Rich Meister I'm planning to do matte CF. the pattern should hide some imperfections later down the road.
Jul 5, 2016
elguapo I did glossy XPel on seatbacks and really like the look. FWIW
Jul 5, 2016
ssq Like @elguapo I too went with glossy xpel after deliberating a lot over xpel stealth. I think with white seats the glossy seats look really good and changing the look would not do justice to the original design.
I will post pictures soon.
Jul 6, 2016
BrianD Can't wait to see them! I have been on the fence between glossy and matte with white seats as well. Do you mind sharing cost?
Jul 6, 2016
PeterK I went with matte. My kids didn't like looking at themselves. Surprising considering three are teenaged girls.

Jul 6, 2016
Saxena Same here, we love the way it turned out. The glossy XPel retains the original look and should hold up well to plenty abuse. It cost $250 per seat back.
Jul 7, 2016
ssq @BrianD hmm..I will PM the cost to you but it not even close to $250 per seat. That's a very high price, sorry @Saxena I think you could have gotten a much much better deal than that.. *cough* *cough* half...
Will share pictures tomorrow after I clean the seats, I am letting them "cure" and dry for a day.
Jul 7, 2016
Sean So Lowe Gold flakes in that? lol
Jul 7, 2016
ssq I blame it on the following effect from glossy seatbacks:-

Jul 7, 2016
elguapo My seatbacks were $250 for for all 5 (7 seat config) and the two third row headrests. I used the same person who did my S and have referred business to him, so maybe I got below market. I don't know, but love the look.
Jul 8, 2016
gjunky Ours were just done in XPEL clear (glossy). Because of the black on black interior, we decided to go with the contrasting glossy look. Picking up the car tomorrow. Not having them protected was making me nervous.
Jul 8, 2016
tomtx37 @BrianD - Have you picked up your MX 75D in Dallas? If yes, would you please share pictures? Thanks.
Jul 8, 2016
BrianD I didI only noted one issue which was actually a scratch in the back of the drivers seat oddly enough (considering our thread here). They are going to have to replace it. Everything else looked great! Will post pics once I get home.

Jul 9, 2016
elguapo My bad. My seatbacks were about $630 for the five seats and third row head rests. Totally worth it. It's been three months and my memory sucks.
Gotta protect the seatbacks with something. The scratch and smudge easily. Also, the plastic is a magnet for dust and crumbs. Film is not.

MichaelATX I helped my daughter move and loaded a few items in my Model X and ended up with a deep scratch on one of the second row seat backs. I am going to cover them with XPEL to prevent further damage. Before I do that, however, is there a recommended product to buff out the scratch before I have the XPEL applied?
Aug 2, 2016
FarmerDave Why not just have your detailer do it when he installs the XPEL?
Aug 3, 2016
MichaelATX That's a good idea. I am not sure a detailer will take responsibility for that high gloss surface.
