Progress... Design studio for Model X opens on Monday! 100D?

Hopefully I can order a sunshade!

Wow I have been waiting for model X for this many years and finally the design studio is open, and I still don't have model X yet. This is definitely ironically funny.

'Price drop' price is probably just the price of the car with some options and with tax credits.

You will get your X (and sunshade hopefully) the day after the design studio opens...one day wait right?

I have configured and ordered a 70D. Do you think new 90D and P90D orders confirmed after Monday will be produced before my 70D?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same to the 70D as they did to the 40 model S. Remove it for "lack of demand"
  • Apr 9, 2016
    jsollender
Then what, upgrade those customers to 90D with a new upgrade charge, or at no cost to customer? If the latter, you'd have an angry bunch of 90D reservists/owners crying foul. Same question if they offered a 100D and/or P100D. What then for cars already delivered as far as upgrade fee, and what about the non-VIN assigned confirmed orders already out there waiting for queueing that are 90D and P90D's? What might they say or pay to upgrade before VIN gets assigned, locking them into their confirmed configurations?
Lots of pondering, but no solid answers until we see what news Elon offers us in 48 hours.

I suspect there won't be any X changes, but if there are it's unlikely that a lower end model would be entirely removed. More likely would be to bump the 70 to an 80 to boost the appeal.

Speculation is meaningless, but sometimes fun, so my guess would be that any battery change is just going to be the introduction of a 100 battery at a price point above the 90 for the S and maybe for the X. (i.e. The lineup would now be 70, 90, 100) As long as the 100 is priced above the current price of the 90, customer complaints get minimized. Then six months down the road, you phase out the 90 and bump the 70 to an 80.

It will be interesting to see if they keep the X and S in lockstep for battery options.

It's still not the end of the work day in the Pacific time zone. Technically, if the studio opened to the public at 11:59 PM Pacific, Elon would still be correct in his tweet.

I don't know how minimized the complain will be, but I am sure one super upset customer! I do not care about price increase, only about the max capability of the Model X money can buy. If they indeed increase to 100D. This makes my model X no longer max capable without even drivin for 200 miles. I will be super super mega mad!

The thing to remember is the 40kWh pack was a different design that the 60/85 kWh so the cost of bringing the 40kWh to market was not worth the orders they had, which is why they then ended up delivering software limited 60 kWh packs to simplify life and conserve capital.

Wow, you guys really got a big heart on Tesla. I love Tesla to death, don't get my wrong. But getting an iPhone 6 and two weeks later iPhone 7 came out does not seems to be a good thing IMO. I think maybe Tesla should wait for at least a year to release 100D.

But won't the same issue occur a year from now for those who had just received their Model X's then? Unless Tesla switches to explicit model years, when is there a perfect time that won't upset someone?
  • Apr 11, 2016
    Drivin
I don't understand. How long should Apple take the iPhone 6 off the market before announcing the iPhone 7? Even when the new models come out, people still buy the old ones.

Tesla should come out with the 100D ASAP. They should show the world that they are not resting and are constantly moving the state of the art.
  • Apr 11, 2016
    K-MTG
I would assume you did not order the X?
  • Apr 11, 2016
    ModelXBoy
I was about to write a book here explaining the reason why introducing 100D now is not a good idea. Now i don't think i should, because it's too obvious, too simple to understand it's not good idea. Unless one thing, and one thing only, Tesla main goal is to screw up on their early adaptors and punish them not only the long years of wait time, also a brand new outdated vehicle and also be lab rat to make sure they are pissed all the way without recovery! If that is the intention of Tesla, Tesla won't be around any longer. So the bottom line is it's very very rare to see 100D be introduced right after 90D was barely built for Model X.

BTW, if people think they should have 100D right now, maybe 2 weeks later 105D or 110D should be introduced as well after 100D. Again, no bash on Tesla and whatever decision they try to make. But if they don't wait and get 100D out right now, they will sure have one angry customer like myself and some others.

Why can't Tesla release a 100D tomorrow AND offer an upgrade at the same (or close) cost as the price difference between the 90D and the 100D? This would 'hurt' no one as you would have the opportunity as anyone else to be driving a 'top of the line' Model X as anyone else.
  • Apr 11, 2016

I took delivery of my car in Sept 2014. Two weeks after taking delivery Autopilot and the D were introduced. I was initially upset until I realized I got exactly what I ordered. Would I have preferred AWD and autopilot, yes. Did I get screwed? Definitely not. I made a decision to buy the car knowing it would improve over time.

If a 90d has the range you need, buy it. If you feel you need more range, wait until the 130d is offered. I bet the autopilot suite will be better then anyway. In the meantime, I'll continue happily driving my Classic Tesla.

I would agree with that, but what about signature cars. Do they get discounted or free? When is the configurator going to open up?
  • Apr 11, 2016
    Az_Rael
Maybe we need to start a "Tesla Buyers Guide" site like MacRumors does. They originally started because Apple used to update the Mac randomly and unannounced. People were getting upset when they bought a mac computer and Apple updated it a couple of weeks later. So they created their Buyers Guides to try and help people time when it was a good idea to buy a Mac computer vs waiting based on industry rumors, etc.

In that case wait until the 100D an P100D come out to buy a model x
  • Apr 11, 2016
    ModelXBoy
Here is the issue. I do not against Tesla to improve its hardware in any way. But it's just too close of a refresh cycle for Model X to upgrade to 100D at this moment. If we do create a buyer guide like how Mac rumors does it, how can they warn buyers when new and upgraded time only 2 month? This is way too soon to get a refresh especially for a 100K car. Sure you can argue its 2012 model, sure you can argue its already out since Sep 2015, but how many? Tesla just ramping up its production now and an upgrade at the same time? Bad timing is what I meant. Give early adaptors at least 6 month to 1 year to at least justify the purchase. Hopefully I made myself clear and some people would agree. Peace!

This is surely a problem with Tesla's frequent upgrades instead of a yearly or semi-annual schedule. For other car makers, the buyer knows a new model is coming months ahead, and the older models are discounted near the end to compensate the buyers. Not Tesla. You pay top dollars and get stuck with a beta car.

At least, you have some chance to return the car under Lemon law and order the latest one again. How many days is your car sitting in the SC now?
  • Apr 11, 2016
    ModelXBoy
I think it has been 2 weeks and 4 days now. Will see if I can pick up on Tuesday as promised. The reason why it took so long is because the body was damaged due to failed door and unpainted section under the FWD. Those required body shop to take care of it. Took a bit longer than usual.

Design Studio estimated delivery dates are quite a surprise with even the 5 seater suggesting June delivery.

Launch issues have hurt on-going sales momentum + existing reservations are not converting as expected?

What is the difference between an Automatic Rear Liftgate and a Power Rear Liftgate, other than the $3k for the Premium Upgrade package? Automatic is standard. My Model S has a button to press on the display for the lift gate to open and close. Is that power or automatic?

The 75D has a 3k increase in starting price over the old 70D and Dark ash is now the default no extra charge interior. With 1.5k increase in the Model S starting price, the Model X's starting price still has a more than 5k premium over the Model S, but comes with a bigger battery. It does seem the differences in battery size are getting really small for the X.

Interesting. Hadn't noticed that. Looks like that's another free upgrade for reserved orders since we had the default interior (was Matte Obeche, now a $750 upgrade) and it's showing up as "included" at not extra cost.

Anyone else notice that the 20" wheel options in the X design studio now say they come with all-season tires? I wonder if Tesla was tired of getting an ear full from all of us who originally configured 20" wheels, which were supposed to have all-season tires, and then trying to change us to summer tires? Hmmm...

The design studio says May delivery for 90D and P90D and June delivery for 75D... how is that possible with the presumed backlog of orders?
  • Apr 12, 2016
    Colby Boles
Yeah, I can't believe their optimism anymore. They should really say June and then surprise people with early May deliveries if everything works out. I'm not sure why they would want to disappoint more people with late deliveries than they have already. Considering I still don't have evidence that my vehicle is in production and my delivery window is still listed as March on the TM website, I'm not that impressed by Tesla's ability to forecast things or even communicate about delays.
  • Apr 12, 2016

That's just for the X90D and has been that way since they made the tire changes a couple months ago. The XP90D still shows ALL tire options get summer tires.

No. You're using the word "beta" incorrectly.
  • Apr 12, 2016
    ModelXBoy
No, i am sorry to confuse you. I meant they should space them apart. So you don't have two groups of people having two variations at the same time with one been the better version. Another word, if Model X owners got their car already over couple of month, i think it's good for refresh. If Model X owners just starting to receive their cars and a newer hardware version comes out, it's not always a good idea. You count from the first major group of people who received the car and the duration of that version, next version should be spaced apart. If not, you will see 110D 3 month later after 100D was released. Give the early buyer a choice to upgrade or give early buyers a chance to have the latest toy for sometime before you obsolete them. Hopefully i made it somewhat more clear for you. Thanks.
  • Apr 13, 2016
    MrBoylan
Tesla PR confirmed that with me as well. Nice bonus for early confirmers.
  • Apr 13, 2016
    MrBoylan
Yes, Model X price went up, but only for the base level battery (but it's a bigger battery). It went from $80K for the 70D to $83K for the 75D. Those who configured and confirmed the 70D at the earlier price get the 75D for that price. Bonus! The 90D and P90D prices stayed the same.

But Elon's Tweeted price was post-incentives. There is no Model X for $78K pre-incentives. If you're in California, a 75D Model X with AutoPilot and 6 seats would be $88,500 ($78,500 after $10K in federal and state incentives). This is probably what he meant.

So this is third party hearsay then? It's certainly something you can post about but the fact that you were not the one it happened to reduces the credibility of any of the supporting evidence.
