patn I had hoped this was just a temporary thing coinciding with the updates, but Elon's tweet makes it sound like the new color choices are more permanent. To me Silver is just always the right color for a car... And alongside white it has to be the most energy efficient in warm climates... It seems to be a popular choice as I see a lot of them around... Why on earth would they move to all dark color choices?
Apr 12, 2015
arijaycomet Agree. My first S85 RWD was silver and it just looked perfect. I was told the guy who penned the design had actually claimed Silver was the color he always envisioned it being. That being said, while I loved my silver car, my wife's Pearl White S60 is a nice color, as well. I've since upgraded to a tricoat red, which is cool and unique... but the silver seems to be the most elegant option I'd say (next to pear white)
Apr 12, 2015
JakeP Yes and silver is hardly too similar to Titanium Metallic...but it was odd when they called it "Warm Silver", and then still offered Silver Metallic. I hope they bring back "Starlight Silver Metallic".
Apr 12, 2015
jerry33 Me neither. At car shows I get so many people saying that silver is their favourite colour. My hope is that they bring it back when the new paint shop comes on line.
Apr 12, 2015
timf I think they should have kept Silver instead of adding Obsidian Black. Their reasoning likely goes since Black is currently the most popular color and Silver is the least popular, they are better off offering two shades of black. I don't think many people will pay to upgrade to a metallic black when they can get Solid Black for no cost. The difference just isn't as noticeable as Pearl White is over the also discontinued Solid White. They would be better off keeping variety in the lighter shades than two nearly identical shades of black.
Apr 13, 2015
Blu Zap I have always liked silver cars. I have owned several, but they are very common. On the other hand, black is very popular, especially in Europe. I ended up with the dark blue. It is blue in sunlight and black in shade and nighttime. I have found I really like colors that change colors in different lighting.
Apr 13, 2015
eye.surgeon Sliver is my go-to color for 90% of my cars...not sure what I would have done without that choice. It's very odd for it not to be an option, literally every competing car in the luxury market offers it.

flankspeed8 Silver was always going to be my next color. Unless they bring it back, I can say there will be no Tesla in my future![]()
Please don't flame me, but as someone who is waiting to pull the plug, for numerous reasons of which none are financial, I am starting to get concerned and a little turned off about how quickly things are changing. It should not be a crap shoot to know that what the packages contained last month should be the same today. Same with pricing. It just seems to volatile and that will scare some people away. I really do wish Tesla well though.
Apr 14, 2015
bonnie Sounds to me like even if they did bring silver back (which would be another change), you're not going to buy.
Apr 14, 2015
flankspeed8 I am guessing that the person who posted above me has a PhD in mind reading? I am waiting for things like SuperCharging in Minnesota that can actually get you up north, as well as a potential job change that would make the economics better. Right now my commute is 5 miles round trip. There are several other issues but the fact that I have put down $5k on a reservation tells that I am serious about a Tesla. Driving an EV requires compromise, but a basic color like silver should not be one of them.
Apr 14, 2015
bonnie No, sorry you took such offense. None was meant.
It's just that you said "I am starting to get concerned and a little turned off about how quickly things are changing" and that things were too volatile for you. So I assumed color wasn't really the core issue.
Apologies if I hit a button.
Apr 14, 2015
flankspeed8 Thanks Bonnie. I am still trying to wrap my hands around this evolving tech. Not sure that we can call it new since some of the first motor transports were EV's. That being said, I put a lot of trust, faith and confidence in this company to change the world. Starting from the dealerships to the manufacturing to the re-energizing through the SuperCharging program. That is why such simple things like eliminating a basic color, moving an option like lift-gate to a premium package, advertising greatly exaggerated "gas savings", masking doc fee's in the fine print, etc, really do fight the image that Tesla is trying to overcome. And to stay relevant to the topic, not having silver is an absolute killer. I am now driving a white car and can't stand the color. First and last. My 2013 Passat TDI SEL that I traded it in for was silver, my Honda was silver, my Saab was a kind of silver. Like I said, this type of compromise should not be required and I sure hope they will change their tune, especially when the X start production. Thanks...
Apr 14, 2015
mdevp I think it's very odd that Tesla is going to drop silver when every other high end auto manu. not only offers silver but multiple silver variations. I think it'd be better if Tesla improved the current silver, maybe better saturation or something.
Apr 14, 2015
eye.surgeon You can still order silver off-menu for the next few months per Elon. Just call them.
Apr 14, 2015
Drucifer I was thinking the same thing - my pattern is blue, green, silver as follows:
1985 - blue 1978 Olds 98
1987 - green 1975 Mercedes 240D
1990 - silver 1986 Acura Legend
1999 - blue 1999 Saab 9-3 Convertible
2012 - green 2013 Chevy Volt
2015 - silver? Model S?
I am willing to allow the metallic dark grey or even better, titanium, act as a proxy for silver, however.
Apr 14, 2015
Cyclone I am 90% sure I am getting the dark gray. Depending on where in Charlotte you live, you may see its twin out and about if you go with that over titanium.

lg_golfs For me its the fact I will be leaving this car in airport parking quite a bit and will only have a few days home with it before I head right back to an airport during my busier travel spurts. It's only light colors for me. Allows the somewhat clean freak in me the ability to tolerate a dirty car until I am home long enough to get the thing washed.
Last two cars were white. I really do not want another white car so placed my order a month early so I could get Silver before they stop producing it end of June.

Canuck Hmmm....
Isn't making the "economics better" a "financial" reason?
Apr 15, 2015
flankspeed8 Wow, it is so nice to have everything parsed and analyzed. I appreciate it! Not really. Let me spell it out. My new job, should I take it, requires a move to a more rural community which has gravel roads and only requires me to drive 5-10 miles a day. Would you say that the Tesla Model S or even X makes sense in this scenario? How long would it take for me to recoup my phantom gas savings of $10,000 that Tesla says I will save? Let's be clear, not that it is anyones business, if the Tesla was suitable at this point for me, it would be in my driveway. I still stand by what I said...One should not have to compromise on the color silver. Some people are way too protective of Tesla against constructive criticism/personal opinion.
Apr 15, 2015
taurusking I do not have any deposit like you.
But I love silver color. Mine is silver too. I am kind of disappointed that Tesla dropped silver color.
And I agree with you 100% on every other thing you mentioned about Tesla. Don't get me wrong I am a hard core fan of Tesla
Apr 15, 2015
Tamar Yes, the last few weeks have been a little unsettling, but it just makes me want to step back and let the dust settle, not "pull the plug" (by the way, is that a pun?). Given all the churn, it seems prudent to at least wait until after the big April 30 reveal before signing on the dotted line...unless the perfect inventory car happens to become available.
Apr 16, 2015
AustinPowers I would guess silver will be back before long.
Over here the most poular colours on premium/luxury cars, be it privately owned or company cars, are black and silver. Not offering silver (and by that I mean silver, not "Titanium", which is more gold/beige than silver) in that market is just a very bad move, unless they want to sell even less cars over here than they are doing already.
Apr 16, 2015
JakeP Absolutely agreed. And now that they have renamed "Warm Silver" back to "Titanium Metallic", there is no potential confusion over two colors with silver in the name. Please bring back Starlight Silver, it is a gorgeous color and a notably absent option. I was in the Porsche dealership yesterday, and half the cars were silver, and they looked great...and the "for display purposes only" J1772 pedestal for the completely absent 918 hybrid was hysterical.
Apr 16, 2015
jcaspar Interesting, as silver is the first color I ruled out when deciding on my P85. It seems to be the default color for so many euro sedans (like white for pickup trucks) that I had no interest in it. Why blend in? I am still surprised they dropped it as so many people seem to like it.
Apr 16, 2015
MsElectric I too can't believe they dropped silver. Silver with a tan interior was going to be my choice but there are no other exterior colors that I find appealing so I am pretty much screwed in the exterior color depart, department. The new "Titanium" is more of a champagne beige from the 90s. Not only did they drop silver but there is no medium to light gray either. The Mercedes S class we were considering has about 4 versions of silver and gray. I hope at least one viable silver or medium gray is available for the Model S.
It's a really disappointing and puzzling development. Tesla is probably the only car manufacturer in existence that is not offering silver as an exterior color. I honestly don't know what color there is for me to pick as what they are calling midnight silver is basically a dark blue/gray black.
Apr 16, 2015
JakeP My buddy Ryan with a new 85D is raving about Sport Mode, and has me back in the Design Studio considering an upgrade. But I doubt I'll pull the trigger, because Starlight Silver was always the one color I would go with, if I ever had to replace Sequoia Green.
Apr 17, 2015
Lerxt I'm sure Tesla dropped silver for 2 reason. 1 it's ordinary and not a standout colour, and 2, it's not that popular with Tesla owners.
Apr 17, 2015
ecarfan Where I live, a region with a very high number of Teslas such that I typically see a dozen on an one hour drive, the old silver color is more popular than the old gray, green, brown, dark blue, and even the multi-coat red. Only black and white beats it.
Apr 18, 2015
MsElectric Silver is a very popular premium car color in the Northeast and they will have a bunch of unhappy customers who will be shocked to find out when they try to place an order that Tesla is the only car manufacturer on earth who does not offer silver or a light gray as an exterior color choice.
They dropped brown because it was not selling well and then they came out with brownie silver (aka warm silver or "Titanium") so if they can make brown look good I am sure they can improve on the silver they used to have and come out with a nice silver or at the least a light to medium gray. The lack of silver is extremely disappointing especially now that they have also removed the lighter gray option.
Apr 18, 2015
rlcordeiro Well if they want to entice the Euro-luxury car owners away from ICE technology they better bring back silver because that seems to be the preferred color of those cars.
Apr 19, 2015
jerry33 Silver is certainly popular in DFW. Yes, it's not standout like Red or Pearl, but it gets lots of complements. My hope is that this is just a temporary hiatus until the new paint facility comes online.
Apr 19, 2015
MsElectric We fall in that category. We love how silver or a medium gray looks and how easy those colors are to maintain. After I once owned a black car I promised myself I will never own another car with a dark exterior color as the only time my black car looked clean was the half an hour after it was just washed. It showed every single spec of dust.
I seriously can't understand why they can't come out with a silver or light gray with extra depth and dimension.
Apr 19, 2015
RiverBrick There were over 300 EVs at a gathering in Montreal yesterday. About 30% were Tesla. When video of the parade is released, Silver will likely be the winner, though they were also a lot of Red and White.
I am sure something close to the original Silver will be offered in the future. For now, it's like a sports franchise that changes jerseys frequently to boost merchandise sales.
Apr 19, 2015
FLDarren I can't count the times I've seen a silver S on the road and texted LoL Rick to see if it was him. Not once has it been him. Silver is pretty popular around here. I don't understand why Tesla would discontinue one of the most popular colors. I can't be certain but I'm pretty sure every car manufacturer offers silver.
Apr 19, 2015
mwulff I agree that it seems like a weird move to drop the silver color. Personally I'm not much into silver because all cars here are silver. Especially nice cars like mercs and beemers are all silver here. I prefer more intense colours like the Bmw estoril-blue.
I still think they should have kept it because many people really like it.
Apr 20, 2015
AustinPowers I think many people who buy premium price cars don't like to stick out of the crowd.
Hardly a better way to blend in than with black or silver. Plus, as many have pointed out before, silver/light grey is one of the easiest colours to maintain. I can attest to that ;-)

MsElectric The other car we were considering is a Mercedes S class and it is offered not with 1 but FOUR versions of silver or light gray. bonnie Several people here seem to be overly upset that silver isn't a color choice (I'm going for the 'Understatement of the Month' award, btw).
Have you contacted Tesla to let them know that color choice the one thing keeping you from purchasing? If you want it changed, probably more of an impact to let them know directly (rather than vent about color on an independent forum).
Apr 21, 2015
MsElectric Oh yes I've contacted them so they knowI was told I can still get silver "off menu" for a limited time but we are about 3-6 months away from getting our Model S so it is disconcerting that we will not have any color we actually like by the time we buy our car. I mean seriously, how can they drop silver and not even have a light gray to replace it with?
Do you see now why a bunch of us are so upset over this... Mercedes offers 4 shades of silver for the S class and the Model S offers no silver or even a gray color option.
Apr 21, 2015
MartinAustin Yes... can't believe they removed silver and then added back the basic white (there are two whites and two blacks).
Silver is a main colour for cars. It's important for the Model S, because it's the only colour that coordinates with the alloy wheels and all the chrome (especially the side strips under the doors). I think this is a mistake and insofar as colours are important (which is not very much, from an engineering standpoint), the Model S has lost an important facet. I would not be surprised if it is added back.
Remember it is still available to order and if enough buyers select Silver Metallic while the colour is not displayed in the Design Studio, that will be an important signal to Tesla to add it back.
However if the silver colour really has't been that popular among actual buyers of the car, well, there's not much we can do about that!
- - - Updated - - -
I looked at several other manufacturers... every one of them has a silver, from Jeep Grand Cherokee down to Hyundai Elantra.
Having said this, if I were a prospective buyer of the Model S I would just get another colour. The car is SO amazing, and SO important... you can't pass it up.
Apr 21, 2015
bonnie No, not really. It would be like telling Mercedes that Tesla offers a fully electric vehicle with an amazing range and performance - and why don't they? But I do get that people have specific things that are more important to them than anything else. So I accept that for some, color is more important.

Apr 23, 2015
MsElectric Don't think that is going to work because we are likely 4-6 months away and we don't want to order now for a vehicle that we will take delivery 6 months later.
I still can't believe they removed silver and gray. If they can make brown look better by calling it Titanium they should be able to do something nice with silver...
Apr 23, 2015

Apr 23, 2015

Apr 23, 2015

Apr 24, 2015
jerry33 Certainly a light colour, other than white, is needed. I haven't seen a titanium in person but the pictures make it look like a drab Lexus or Altima. Sliver is at least sparkling.
Apr 24, 2015
mdevp I saw the silver today for the first time, IMO it is a very light silver and I can see why so few people ordered it. Can the old silver be improved in any way? Are there other auto OEMs that make a better silver? I've seen a Merc Designo Silver that looked incredible but I was told it was big $$.
Apr 24, 2015
RiverBrick I expect they'll come out with a new silver. I noticed little silver in the "Reach the Beach" photos, but the color was very well represented at the Montreal EV event (85 Teslas) held on the same weekend, so I guess its a regional thing.
The French Canadian Tesla site is more honest than the American one for the colors. They never tried to pass off Titanium Metallic as "Warm Silver," and what is currently called "Midnight Silver Metallic," is simply listed as "Gray."
Apr 25, 2015

Apr 26, 2015
patn Obviously favorite color for a car is a matter of personal taste, but what strikes me as a "silver car" person is that silver is not really a "color"... I know technically it's a paint like the rest but to me it looks more like polished aluminum or steel. To me it's like choosing a watch band: It could be fun to have a bright red or green watch band but it's not something I'd want to use every day... To me a metal band is just the "default" and choosing a color is a different kind of exercise.
Maybe Tesla is going through an aesthetic change but for the first couple of years of the Model S almost every professional photo I saw was a silver car with tan interior... and I still think that is the most striking combo.
Also I'd just like to repeat that I have to believe dark color cars are not very energy efficient in the summer sun... I'd be interested in testing that hypothesis: We could park two cars on a sunny day and run the AC until the interiors were the same temp and then see how long it takes to return to a certain temp...
Apr 26, 2015
mdevp Just saw a newer silver P85D in the sun and it looked good but very similar to the silver toyota parked next to it. Maybe Tesla needs to give Silver a little oomph; like more metallic flake or pearl or something to make it jump out a little more in the sun.
Apr 26, 2015
johnnyS In my neighborhood there are 3 Teslas--two white and one silver (mine). I really like the silver. I think it goes well with all the chrome on the car and the HOV stickers are not as apparent.
Apr 27, 2015
ecarfan And that is in part why my spouse strongly favored silver over the old grey, the chrome door handles blended in with the paint better. I liked silver because ours is parked in our carport and silver is easier to keep clean.
Apr 27, 2015
taurusking All I am hearing is good things about Silver...Please send an email to Tesla let them know that we love our Silver MS...Hopefully they will reconsider dropping silver color.
Apr 27, 2015
MsElectric The problem with them dropping silver is that for those who love silver as their exterior color of choice there is really no other viable option for them to choose.
Pearl White is the closest option I have but I don't really want a white car.
They should be able to easily "improve" the silver they offered and make it more compelling. It is a top color choice for just about every other premium car available to buy. I find the color to be understated, easy to maintain, and it has a nice elegance tat goes well with the lines of the Model S.
Seriously if they can make brown or beige look so good with the color they are calling "Titanium," surely they can come out with a nice shade of silver or light metallic gray...
Apr 27, 2015
brucet999 That work has already been done, albeit with Honda Civics, side-by-side in Sacramento sun, revealing that a silver car will be 9 to 11F cooler than an identical model black car.
Silver and white cars are cooler, says study
Apr 30, 2015
MsElectric I hoping they come out with a nice shade of silver or medium gray before the Model X is announced. I can't imagine them not offering the Model X in a silver color and only offering the car in a gold champagne 90s beige if someone wants a lighter metallic color.
May 4, 2015
brucet999 I would amend this to say that the amount of window space vs roof space makes a difference as to the impact of color on interior temperature. In the case of Model S with Pano roof, there would probably very slight difference even between white and black cars; only oblique radiation on painted areas of two doors if parked facing east or west.
May 4, 2015
jerry33 The pano roof makes little if any difference, it's the rest of the glass that is not as heat protected.

There was a big discussion about this on the board mid April. At the time the end date for Silver was a moving target. There was also talks that they might be moving to a new paint process or something along those lines.
Still, sad to see it missing at any point for people who like lighter colored cars. Just leaves white. A color I had on my last two cars and did not feel like repeating.

ddruz I own a two year old silver Model S 60. After hearing about new 70D I went down to our local Tesla SC and had them work up how much they'd give me in a trade in. It was an excellent price. The only reason I did not do the trade in was because I could not get silver. Saw the titanium metallic in person today which did not do it for me--too dark, too brown--definitely not a substitute for silver. They checked with HQ for me 3 weeks ago and were told silver was no longer a special option.
IMO the reason silver was a poor seller is because it was a relatively unexciting silver as silver cars go, more light gray than silver. Tesla might have done better by improving their silver to a more lustrous metallic silver like you see on many other high end cars instead of dropping it.
Does anyone know who I should email at Tesla to vote that they bring back [an improved] silver? Thx.
Jun 9, 2015
chriSharek Totally agree! ^
White, pearl, gray, black, silver, are all on the same palette! I can't believe they had 5 non-colored colors in the first place.

Jun 9, 2015
cablue I love my silver with tinted windows! In the heat and dust around here, I definitely wanted a light color. I was torn between white and silver until I saw them in person. Silver is beautiful! Very classy, imo. Going to the different Superchargers, we see a lot of silvers. I mostly see black, white, and silver - occasionally gray. I do hope they come out with another version of silver. I'll be trading mine in in another year - at the 3-year mark, and I'll probably want another silver version - no silver with brown tones to it!

David29 Silver is back!
Tesla Model S order page shows "Silver metallic" as a color today, apparently added yesterday (and I see that some other person noticed this yesterday and posted about it in another thread).
It is a ninth color, nothing was removed that I can see.
It does not look as nice in the graphic as the actual cars did in the past, so I am not sure it is the exact same color as before.
