Jan 21, 2013
KKlabunde So my 2 week window is about to start and I have no VIN yet. Is this normal? I would think the car should be built now if the delivery window is good. Tesla said I was on track for that window as of last week.
Jan 21, 2013
spatterso911 Time to start making some phone calls. Become the squeaky wheel. It really works.
Jan 21, 2013
jchangyy I would call them...my DS told me I should expect to receive VIN 3-7 days before the window begins...maybe there is a hold up.
Jan 21, 2013
MikeC My window opens January 26 and I called in today and still no VIN for me. Hopefully in the next few days...
Jan 21, 2013
Benjamin Brooks MikeC, same here... same delivery window (1/26-2/9) & no VIN yet.
85kWh blue/black/obeche matte, pano, tech, sound, air, twin charger, armor.
Jan 21, 2013
Lightning Jeff And here - same window, no VIN as of yet. I intend to call tomorrow.
Jan 21, 2013
dbullard Ditto for me, same delivery window. I did get an email in response to my query from a DS in California at Tesla (Andy Victor), saying "the delivery range you have been given is a good indicator of when your car will be delivered."
Jan 21, 2013
ahimberg I was told my VIN was available 4 days before my window started 1/15 -- window 1/19-2/2 (but I didn't see it til the next day when the docusign paperwork came). And on 1/18 I was told the car was 'done', waiting for shipment.
It was probably available a couple days before that based on notes here.
Jan 22, 2013
mulder1231 Based on the above responses it seems 60kWh reservations are still the majority of current production batches. Just a guess though...
Jan 22, 2013
kinddog not really. i call like once a week and ask if a VIN has been issued for me. each time they say "no". then awkward silence. then i say bye and hang up.
Jan 22, 2013
DrMikki I just called and my VIN popped up this morningdelivery window Jan 22-Feb 5.

Jan 22, 2013
kinddog hey Mikki. you so fine. you so fine, you blow my mind. hey Mikki... you have inspired me to make another call to Tesla today. But it makes me feel like a nag. I sometimes wonder if my DS hates me. I always try to play it cool, like it's no big deal that I was told to get ready for delivery in December and now we're heading into late January and there is still no VIN or any sign that the car is actually going to be made. But it's a big deal to me. I can't sleep. I keep dreaming about this stupid car and I keep coming to this website like an OCD patient. The DS can not influence anything about the car's production schedule. They are truly like the Apple store kids in blue t-shirts. Friendly as hell but mostly worthless and you kind of get the feeling like the friendliness isn't genuine, but rather a directive from their boss to "deliver a better customer service experience than anything else out there". yawn.
Jan 22, 2013
DrMikki VIN #4219they said it will still be a couple weeks before delivery? Hope it doesn't take that long...

Jan 22, 2013
kinddog what is your reservation #?
Jan 22, 2013
DrMikki It's 4914Happy to have a VIN < than my sequence #! I originally finalized for 40 kWh, but upgraded to 85 kWh on Dec. 13. If I had originally picked 85 kWh, I would probably already have taken delivery of my Model S.

Jan 22, 2013
MikeC @Benjamin Brooks @Lightning Jeff @dbullard: Looks like we're all in the same boat - whoever gets a VIN first, let us know!
Jan 22, 2013
bonehead +1
Delivery window: 1/23-2/6
Still no VIN!

Jan 22, 2013
KKlabunde Just called and they had my VIN for me...#4065. Said I am still on track for delivery between 1/26 and 2/9 (closer to 2/9). She told me the VIN is issued in the early stage of production, and the car should be ready to be on a truck in about 7 days -- enroute to Chicago, then DS to Indianapolis. Hard to believe they'll make it here by 2/9...
85kwh, gray, gray leather, air suspension, studio sound, 19" wheels, body color roof. Reservation #P2619 (yes, I finalized months after I was invited).
Jan 22, 2013
kcveins Count me in the same boat - Delivery window 1/28 thru 2/11; no VIN either....
Jan 22, 2013
highedu Last week my DS said I should expect a vin some time this week. I will call to find out but from what I am seeing in this thread I doubt it since I'm sequence #12,848
Jan 23, 2013
ahimberg very unpredictable, the advice I'd give is to not get your hopes up, target the end of your delivery window and be surprised if its early.
personally, I got a VIN last week, but while going back and forth to get the final MVPA finished, my DS went on vacation -- tomorrow it will be a week that I've been waiting for a response and updated paperwork. (I know from talking to someone else in the delivery team that my car status was 'done, ready for shipping' -- I have no idea if its still at the factory or sitting in Seattle waiting for the MVPA and check to go through.) Maybe tomorrow my DS will be back and i'll hear something.
Jan 23, 2013
Lightning Jeff See, now, I don't even have a DS - or at least, one that I'm aware of. Does that contact come by email or do you have to call?
Jan 23, 2013
mnx When I called the build my Model S hotline last week, they gave me a window, activated my delivery button, and gave me the name and # of my inside DS. They suggested I could call my DS around the end of the month to see if I had a VIN (If I hadn't heard from them yet).
Jan 23, 2013
highedu Just spoke with the inside delivery team and they revised there earlier estimate of VIN to next week for me. They said vin usually comes a few days before the beginning of the delivery windows with vehicles and that vehicles take between 6 hours - 10 days to complete. They also said that if you will pick your car up in person at the factory it will shave days off your delivery window so the vehcile come 3-5 days earlier.
Jan 23, 2013
pete8314 I'm in the group too, estimate was Jan 27-Feb 10, having finalized on 12/19. I'll email my Product Specialist (not totally sure how that differs from a Delivery Specialist, but the last email I had from my PS said that he'd let me have the VIN when available) for an update....money-wise, I wouldn't mind it being mid-Feb, but patience-wise, tomorrow would be just fine

Jan 23, 2013
jbherman For what it's worth: I was in a similar position a week ago today. I had a VIN, all paperwork done, car done, but they wouldn't/couldn't give me a delivery update. I was told the car was still at the factory. On the same day, I received a call from the truck asking if I'd be home in 8 hours (I live a LONG way from Fremont)! Boom...car delivered that evening half way across the country from the factory. It's just like pregnancy...you've hit your due date and delivery can happen at any time! Have your bag packed!
Jan 23, 2013
johndoe74 DrMikki, my VIN is #4222, looks like we will probably receive them on the same day

Jan 23, 2013
Raven Looks like people are all over the board in terms of receiving a VIN and taking delivery. Talked to my DS today. Still no VIN which, in her words, means it hasn't even entered the production line. However, the guy I talked to yesterday made it sound like it was out on the line. Anyhow, Jan 29-Feb 12....awaiting the VIN so I can move ahead with paperwork.
Jan 23, 2013
ahimberg I can hope for something similar, but i'm doubting it given they don't have all my money yet. I did get some info from my DS today that I needed to give them a check with the non-financed portion so the mvpa paperwork could show the remaining amount for financing with my bank, so I did that -- hand delivered cashiers check to tesla showroom, but still don't have the updated paperwork yet.
Also, at least according to their system my car is still in fremont ready for shipping. I think the updated paperwork should get to me tomorrow, then maybe I'll get a seattle service center contact about the delivery. So frustrating when I see other cars getting their delivery in seattle that finished production the same day as mine.

Jan 23, 2013
alluu In the same boat. Delivery window 1/23 - 2/6. Called in today and a VIN has not been assigned yet.
Jan 23, 2013
DrMikki Exciting!! I'm hoping to have final paperwork signed tomorrow (had to give lien-holder info to my DS late this afternoon). I'd love to get a surprise delivery call :3 Wish supercharger network extended from the factory to Phoenix; I'd gladly pick it up...
Jan 23, 2013
KRB Got my vin today. I finalized on 12/17; delivery window: 1/21-2/4; S and Penfed check should both be ready by Monday. lLauren Cato, DS, worked late into the night yesterday to get the paperwork in form acceptable to PenFed. Thanks Lauren! Tesla seems to be on track and exceeding it's delivery commitments.
Jan 24, 2013
pete8314 Got mine late last night after emailing my PS, 4287.
Jan 24, 2013
kinddog in the words of 1993... NOT!
Jan 24, 2013
DrMikki Got final paperwork signed today, PenFed check should be here by Tuesday.

Jan 25, 2013
Lightning Jeff I called and left a message yesterday, had a return call this morning with my VIN (4212), which they said was issued yesterday. Was told approximately two weeks for delivery - didn't ask if that meant for it to be put on a truck or to be here. Either way, the timing is unfortunate, as I'll begin a two-week trip out of state exactly two weeks from today. No shortage of people willing to take delivery on my behalf, of course.
Jan 25, 2013
kinddog got VIN just now... #4382
delivery window stays. no other information.
yay.
Jan 25, 2013
KKlabunde Was just told that I am done in production and awaiting transport to Chicago!
P2619, VIN 4065
Jan 25, 2013
MikeC Congrats, Lightning Jeff and kinddog! Got mine, too - 4375
Jan 25, 2013
KKlabunde Got a call from my DS to introduce himself and schedule...wohoo! Went from no VIN, to a VIN, to car on a truck, and to scheduling delivery well within my window in very short order!!! Thank you, Tesla.
Jan 25, 2013
bonehead Got my VIN today!
4165
P8367.
Hopefully delivery late next week
Jan 25, 2013
Lightning Jeff Sounds like the dam has broken for us late-Jan to early-Feb windows folks. So cool to know our cars "exist" (in some form at least)! Congrats to all. (Incidentally, today was the first time I've ever spoken to a Tesla employee, after 3+ years. Strange but I'm not complaining.)
Jan 26, 2013
kinddog You beat me by 7 spots!!! Now we must definitely duel...
Jan 26, 2013
astrotoy My res is 10098 with delivery date scheduled from Jan 22 to Feb 5. No VIN yet. However, the website says my car is being built. Solar City is coming next Thursday to install the (super) charger.
Jan 26, 2013
jchangyy
@astrotoy...man, that's a bummer. My window starts Feb 2 and if you're already into your window and still no VIN, mine will likely be pushed back as well. did you try calling your production specialist?
Jan 26, 2013
gregincal February 2nd is a week away and just the beginning of your window (which is the same as mine), so don't you think you're panicking a bit early? astrotoy still has a week and a half left in the window, and there often isn't that much time between being told the VIN and the car being ready (in fact, I often see reports of people being told their VIN after the car is entirely finished). Since we are all local to the factory, I wouldn't be worried until you are at least into the last week of the window without getting a VIN.
Jan 26, 2013
alluu Called in and got my VIN today - 4449. Looking at a factory pickup at the end of the delivery window.
Jan 26, 2013
jchangyy
I've been panicking since that delivery button appeared...can't eat, drink, or think of anything else but picking up my MS. I would be sooo crushed if I miss the window because VIN gets released and then told that car is ready in a day or two. I still need to get a loan finalized, and receive a check from B of A. that'll likely take 3-5 days from the time I send in my paperwork.
Don't you all feel the same anxiety waiting for you car? Or am I crazy??????
Jan 26, 2013
Lightning Jeff If you're crazy you're not alone. :scared:
Jan 26, 2013
dbullard My delivery window started today, still no VIN as well. Called Tesla Friday morning, left a message, got a call back within 1/2 hour.
Tesla really needs to put status info this on the web site, so when you log into the site you'll see your VIN in addition to the "The factory is building your Model S" message.
Jan 26, 2013
spatterso911 Try having max anxiety while waiting for your car on Tesla-eve...
Jan 26, 2013
MikeC As you wish..we can do it in Fremont in 2 weeks...
Jan 28, 2013
Raven How many of you are in your window and still without a VIN? One more day and I'm inside my window with no VIN.
Jan 28, 2013
Darmok Me too. Jan 28-Feb 11.
Jan 28, 2013
highedu Key thing to remember for those within their window and without a VIN, it doesnt mean that your car is not in production or well along. Many folks have recevied a VIN and been notified their car was ready the following day. I spoke to a DS about this and he said that the SAP tool they have access to does not provide the same level of accuracy that the shop floor MES systems do.
Jan 28, 2013
pete8314 I don't find it hard at all to think that SAP isn't very helpful.
I do have my VIN, but nothing else yet (i.e. final MVPA), so given that it's generally a good 7-10 days to ship the car to TX once fully paid for, I'll be missing my window.
Jan 28, 2013
DrMikki Our Model S is done!!! Shoulda had PenFed expedite our check... Ugh

Jan 28, 2013
Puyallup Bill Today is day two of my window - Jan 27 - Feb 10. Because I called, today received email from DS with VIN.
The pre-delivery MVPA says FEB-MAR
The email from DS says two to three weeks, but that appears to be a canned message.
Too many dates.
Communications does not seem to be a strong point at Tesla.
Two weeks ago I emailed concerning the availability of the J1772 adapter, as I absolutely must have one. No answer to date.
Two weeks ago mailed a large down payment check, requesting acknowledgment of receipt. Nothing heard, so sent email a week ago, nothing heard. They have it - shows on my bank statement.
Jan 28, 2013
johndoe74 Who is your DS? I noticed some DS are more responsive than others. My DS is similar to yours, emails were never acknowledged. I have to call them up directly. Even then, there's not much useful information coming from them, it's either 'Not yet', or 'Coming soon', or 'Will update you later'.
Jan 28, 2013
jchangyy
I agree...It's frustrating as hell, having to deal with communication problems from Tesla. I've also sent emails and made calls to my Production specialist--I think he hates me. Like many of you, my window starts in 5 days and no VIN--can't imagine having no VIN well into your delivery window.
Tesla REALLY needs to fix this problem before they move onto Gen III for the mass public who won't have the patients and the passion we all have for Tesla.
If they don't correct this now, Tesla MS will wound up like Google Nexus One (failed experiment on online commerce and service) and may have to resort to a "dealership" model for car sales.
Jan 28, 2013
Puyallup Bill Just to be clear - the communications problems were before the DS contacted me, and I assume he was just assigned. We'll see how it goes from now on.
Jan 28, 2013
da_benj I can relate. My delivery window started Jan 8th and I don't have a VIN yet. My PS is responsive; in fact I just spoke to them, however it appears that they are waiting for the VIN as well! Right hand, left hand...
Jan 28, 2013
Benjamin Brooks My window started a couple days ago (1/26). Had to call a couple times this afternoon to get my VIN, 4441.
(Got Tesla's voice mail box a couple times during their normal business hours, which means they're probably busy)
No other details given on delivery target, but at least now I can get my financing moving forward.
Jan 28, 2013
astrotoy Just got my VIN - 4360 after I called today. Looks like the car will be ready on Saturday. I can go down to Fremont to pick it up and get a factory tour. However, they are back ordered on the rear facing seats and Supercharger until late March. The package shelf is also back ordered for a week or two. They will come out and install when they are ready. Solar City will install a temporary 230V charger in the mean time.
Jan 28, 2013
tdiggity
Supercharger? Or do you mean the high powered wall charger?
Jan 29, 2013
da_benj Did you call your product specialist or the number for the Configuration Specialists (the number on the "Your paperwork is complete" email)?
Jan 29, 2013
neroden This is not desirable pacing for those of us who need a VIN before getting insurance, need to comparison shop for insurance, need insurance before getting registration, and need registration before being able to drive the car. Given that my car has to ship cross-country and then get the retrofits (revised defogger ductwork, license plate bracket) at the service center before delivery, I'm not *too* worried about the timing... but I am trying to figure it out.
Aaaah. So it's perfectly likely that I'll get my VIN when the car comes out of the factory. So it'll be a race between me doing paperwork and them doing shipping and service. The DS indicated that they were happy to delay delivery to get everything done, but I look at those photos of overcrowded service centers and wonder!
Jan 29, 2013
gregincal If that's the case I would imagine buying a car off a dealer's lot would be a nightmare. Purchase it, get the VIN and leave it at the dealer for a couple weeks? I've always been covered on my existing insurance and have 30 days to add a newly purchased car.
Jan 29, 2013
kinddog spoke with my PS today (how is a Product Specialist different from a Delivery Specialist? nevermind... i don't care), and he said my car is "in the middle of production" and will be done by the end of the week. Then a couple day process of the car going from the "production" phase to the "sales/delivery" phase (accounting, logistics reconciling). Then a good week-long journey across the country.
his best guess was middle week in February. Which means I will likely miss yet another delivery window (at least it's by a couple days this time instead of a couple months).
i appreciate all the good will and hard work by the team at Tesla.
so anyway, maybe if you know my car is half-made right now and my VIN is 4382, you guys can extrapolate something out of that.
kind of cool to think of my car in the middle of the production line at this moment. I'd give anything to watch my baby being put together.
Jan 29, 2013
Raven From teslamotors.com, it looks like #11,364, #11,391, #11,484, #11,601 all have VINs. 3776, 4465, 4473, and ???? respectively. Nothing here.
Jan 29, 2013
neroden No existing insurance. Long story.
Edit:
With a dealer, it would be rather complicated. It would involve checking the VIN on the car, walking around town to the insurance offices with it, carrying the insurance information (which can be issued quite quickly) back to the dealer, and (at worst) having the dealer rush over to the DMV to finish processing, or (at best) drive off the lot with dealers' plates.
Tesla doesn't have dealers plates, I can't hand the insurance information to Tesla because they're not located here, etc. When everything has to be done by mail or fax it slows things down.
Jan 29, 2013
gregincal OK, thanks. These things are all different from state to state, but I figured it couldn't be the normal way of doing things. When I bought my very first car I was on my parent's insurance, and have had insurance since, so I've never really thought about it. I'm planning to get quotes soon to see if I want to stay with my existing company.
Jan 29, 2013
Darmok On the second day of my delivery window, after emailing the product specialist, he promptly called and said the car is done. VIN 3949. I'll pick it up from the factory in a couple of weeks.
Jan 30, 2013
alluu I didn't get my VIN until I called in on Saturaday and then Monday I got an email from a product specialist. I'm VIN 4449 and it does look like Tesla will make my delivery window (1/23 - 2/6). I was told that my vehicle might be ready by Saturday for a factory pickup. I'll probably pick it up the following Saturday.
Jan 30, 2013
loganss I'm still rocking my Nexus One to date  Got it the same month it was released. Google's still around pumping out Nexus devices so if that comparison shifts to Tesla then you're implying it will be around for a while and setting the stage for how to produce a quality product and not just a cheap product that get into more people's hands?
Tesla definitely needs to improve its communication but when it comes down to it you'll be getting a great car despite all the pains you had to go through. The delays people are getting now is nothing compared to the people who put the first deposits down. Comparing the early Sig deliveries to now is an improvement. Definitely lots of room for improvement but I'm glad Tesla is making sure to spend more of their energy to keep their product high quality. If by November-ish time the communication hasn't dramatically improved then I may be concerned.
Jan 30, 2013
astrotoy Yes, High Powered Wall Charger is on back order.
Jan 30, 2013
jchangyy
Ahh...I miss my Nexus One. I also bought it the first month when it came out, but man, do you remember the whole controversy with that? Now, google is selling nexus phones and tablets via other retail chains (well most of it). that's my only point...Tesla needs a lot of improvement if they want this work, or they may have to find a "dealership" set up to sell to larger population.
Jan 30, 2013
Raven Day two of my window and just got my VIN(due to religious phone calling on my part). Have not been able get my DS nor anyone else on selection #2 of the phone tree(already finalized, etc) so I've been selecting #1. Anyhow, VIN 4467 for me.
Jan 30, 2013
loganss Yup that was crazy. Heard there's huge supply problems with the Nexus 4 now. Seems demand was higher than expected. Might upgrade to that next year.
Did you order the tech and/or sound package? Would have thought I'd have a VIN now if you do. Trying to figure out Tesla's sequence is tiring
Jan 30, 2013
Raven Neither tech nor sound packages. I'd certainly place a call.
Jan 30, 2013
jchangyy looking at your config, your delivery window is 2/14 - 2/28, is that correct? if so, I wouldn't expect your VIN til you're closer to your delivery window. My window opens in 2 days and no VIN yet.
Jan 30, 2013
gregincal BleedsOn delivery estimate is 1/29-2/12 and yours is 2/14-2/28, so one would certainly expect VIN two weeks earlier than yours. Now as to why you have a later delivery estimate it's hard to say. Must be due to changing configurations, although I'm still not sure why it would be so late. However, since you have your delivery estimate, you're just torturing yourself comparing to people with earlier delivery estimates.
Jan 31, 2013
loganss Yeah , I'm pretty muc h torturing myself reading posts on TMC. It's part anxiety and part my current car is giving me a constant mild mold allergy reaction. Not a fun place to be. Given my finalize time and the time it takes for East Coast delivery compared to others I've got no idea why my window is later in February. I'd be so bummed if I hit the end of my delivery window or worse miss my window.
I hate to say it but I may have a TMC addiction as time for delivery nears. I'm going to attempt to take a week long break. Competely cold turkey. I gotta be strong.
Jan 31, 2013
eelton My delivery window is January 29 to February 12, and no VIN yet. I'm not planning on calling until the end of the window...I can't imagine that would get me the car sooner.
sent via Tapatalk
Jan 31, 2013
Raven I have to disagree. It seems that in order for things to flow smoothly you need to call them every so often. If anything, call just to make sure you haven't fallen through the cracks. Also, if you're financing you'll most likely need the VIN, otherwise you're the one holding up the deal.
Jan 31, 2013
gregincal Who knows what's really going on, but I believe that all that falls through the cracks is communication. The factory is doing what it's doing and isn't influenced in any way by your calling, but the DS's are busy and spending most of their time talking to people who contact them proactively. If you need the VIN for financing, then yes you need to contact them. Otherwise I agree it doesn't actually get you your car any sooner, but the first you may hear from Tesla is that your car is done and ready to be picked up. The only other caveat would be if you need to send them money before they ship (like to Texas). In that case you want to work with them proactively to arrange that before the car is done, otherwise it will be a holdup.
Jan 31, 2013
mklcolvin eelton,
I started calling the week before my window started (Jan 30 - Feb 13), and I got my VIN yesterday, xx4702. You might want to nudge them a little... ;-)
Jan 31, 2013
pete8314 I've never called Tesla so far...they've called me a few times in response to an email, but that's it. Generally every email to my PS is responded to same-day, one way or another. I got confirmation from PenFed that my check will be with me tomorrow, so I've emailed my PS to find out whether I need to rush around to get it to him (ie is there a truck for Dallas leaving at the weekend), or if I have a bit if time.
Jan 31, 2013
gregincal My personal plan is to wait until I see people with reservations in the 12000's and or people with windows starting in February getting VINs before I contact them. Until then I figure the rest of you are calling enough for me.
Of course I could break down and change my mind at any time.
Jan 31, 2013
kinddog yeah keep that tool in your back pocket you know
Jan 31, 2013
Puyallup Bill Call.
When I called a few days ago and asked about a VIN, the response was something like: "Yes, and your PS has it for you." I responded that I didn't have a PS. Within an hour or so, I had an email from my PS and we are moving along. Prior to that call, emails went unanswered - now the PS is very responsive.
Jan 31, 2013
kinddog yes but the point is, it didn't make the car be built or delivered any faster.
if he refuses to call until the end of his delivery window, he could be one of those cases where they call and say the truck is outside his window type of deal...
if he wants info on when to expect the car and where it is in delivery, fine, but he seems not to care. i'm sure Tesla wishes we were all like him....

Jan 31, 2013
Puyallup Bill Of course it will not be built faster, but it might speed up delivery. You know, getting things to Tesla promptly - money, insurance card, driver's license - whatever the particular state requires.
Jan 31, 2013
Edgewood Dome Hi Puyallup Bill. I'm up in Edgewood. Res #14409, Grey/Grey silver 21", standard 85kWh. Should take delivery sometime in April/May. Do you have yours yet? Maybe we could get together at the pavilion some Saturday this summer to show off the MS?
Regards,
Edgewood Dome
Jan 31, 2013
Puyallup Bill Not yet - expecting early February. A meet this summer sounds good, as I don't see any EVs in this neck of the woods. Interesting - just cruised through Edgewood in the LEAF about an hour ago.
