Various sensors, lighting, horntones & other addons for my S (Dadaleus' custom build) part 1

Replacement hood paint armor (I did not like the very visible line across the hood from the Tesla armor so I paid to have it removed and replaced--Tesla service didn't even realize there was armor there after the work was done!):
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349053070.301486.jpg

Mobileye collision warning system (also gives automatic high/low beam control and speed limit warning), as well as an installed Escort radar detector:
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349053260.933085.jpg

I also added UV window film to all windows to ensure all UVA is blocked. I put 90% transparent on the windshield and piano roof, 70% on the front side windows, and 40% on the rear side and hatchback windows.

I'm super happy with it all. The Mobileye is even better than expected. I think it may have already saved me a fender bender.

All work was done by Al & Ed's in West Hollywood, which has a lot of experience with Roadsters. Apparently the S has a 25amp accessory connection BTW.

How does that thing work? Does it press the brakes for you? How does it do the high beams? Sensors out front and direct tapping into the software?
  • Sep 30, 2012

Very nice. I'm afraid to ask, but how much did it cost to get the stuff installed? Particularly the radar detector?
  • Sep 30, 2012

Nice install. I wonder if all Al & Ed's can do the install work, or if it is specific to the West Hollywood location.

Stupid question maybe and only vaguely on topic, but I see various (apparently new) eBay Passport 9500ci's for $1000-1100 or so, but anywhere else they're around $1700. Am I missing something as to why?
  • Sep 30, 2012
    dadaleus
There's a camera behind the rear view mirror. (Too dark to get a good picture through the windshield in my garage. I'll try to remember to post one tomorrow.) Can barely see it from the driver's seat. It's not integrated into the software, no, nor does it press the brakes. It just gives a shrill warning when it thinks you are in danger of a collision. As for high beams, it connects to the high beam steering wheel wire. I actually don't have that bit setup yet--I'll let you know how that goes when they set it up.

    - - - Updated - - -

Experience with this type of things seems to be specific to the location. If you're interested in Mobileye for example, I'd suggest contacting them for suggestions about who has the most experience and get them involved. (The regional Mobileye rep directly helped with my install.) I'd also urge support from your local Tesla service center before doing something like this. The guys in West Hollywood had good connections.

Which Mobileye model did you go with?
  • Sep 30, 2012

It's the C2-270 because the 5 series can't decode the Tesla digital info yet. The features are the same except Android integration. Maybe someday there will be a Tesla app!

The Mobileye looks like a great idea. Can you post a picture of the camera behind the rear view mirror?
  • Oct 1, 2012

Oh I see. Looks like good product, but I wanted something more installed that that. With the Mobileye camera, my toll Fastrak, and my office transponder, my windshield is busy enough without yet another box.

Sorry, forgot to take it this morning. I'll try to take a pic tonight.

Hey, so if you don't have a redline then how was it installed stealthly? I thought only redline could be installed in the front of the car and not the windshield?
  • Oct 1, 2012
    shokunin
According to the escort website, the redline is a windshield device radar/laser detector. There's a completely different line 9500ci, 8500ci plus, 8500ci that are installation (hard-wired) based with optional laser jammers (potentially illegal).

Pretty nice looking setup! Did Al & Ed's consider installing the radar detector display in the rear view mirror?

Rear view mirror integration wasn't presented as an option. Looks cool but I still prefer the way mine is. I can't really answer the question about Escort's different models, but this one is completely invisible and built into the car. The only visible things are the tiny optional control pad pictured above (which I'm going to move lower down) and a little LED that flashes red when something is detected.

The hood armor, including removing the old stuff (hard work, so surely cheaper if you didn't already have Tesla's), and also doing the headlights and charger port is $595.

They also have some 22" wheels that they tried on my car. I personally wasn't into changing the wheels, but I let them test them out on my car. They drove just fine--frankly I couldn't tell a difference in ride between them and the 21" factory wheels. They sell these, including the tires, for $4,900. Here's a pic if anyone's interested:

Cool. Do you get lots of false alerts with escort? Or do you use the live service to prevent them by running the mobile app each time? I had a v1 before but the beeps were so annoying I gave it up.

I'm looking at the escort 9500 since it will handle laser (the dominant freeway detection), but the cost is "oh my god, I'm better off getting a ticket!".

If I'm not going big, I figure I might as well got as cheap as possible for photo-radar van detection.

... and how many states is that even legal in??
  • Oct 1, 2012
    ckessel
The Escort 9500 has laser shifting (i.e. laser jamming). And in answer to W.Petefish, it's legal in most states. There's a list somewhere of states it's not legal in when I went googling on the issue.
  • Oct 1, 2012
    dflye
Apparently not where you live (according to the supplier), but would trust reading the info on a state run web site more than a vendor site.

  • Oct 1, 2012
    Lloyd
There is a difference between shifting and Jamming. Jamming actively transmits, where shifting just alters the returned reflection. Jamming is illegal in some states where shifting is not.

Blinder gives a regular error on the gun i.e. "out of range" so I highly doubt you'd ever get caught anyway given its a tiny piece under bumper and cops are used to seeing errors every now and again.

I was worried about this after being in someone else's car with a radar detector. But no, I've had very few alerts in the ~800 miles I've driven with it so far. And of the ~6 times I've gotten an alert, I then saw a police car on 4 of them. It seems like police cars emit radar even when they aren't looking as i've gotten it when passing an officer who is writing a ticket. They suggested leaving X and K off in California. I tuned K back on out of curiosity, but it still hasn't been a problem.

It doesn't have the Live thing, but it does have a manually updated database of false alarms that it locks out using GPS. Better you go read about it on Escort's site so I don't misrepresent anything. Here's a review I saw as well that mentions it reporting like 5% of the false alarms of another detector: Review: Escort 8500CI remote radar detector

I'm confused. Usually window tint is reported as a % of light that is let through so 100% would be essentially no tint and 5% would be near black out. It seems that your front windows are more heavily tinted than your rear side and hatchback which is opposite of what I'm used to seeing on cars. Am I reading it correctly?
  • Oct 11, 2012
    shokunin
You're both correct. 90% Visible Light Transmission on the Fronts (essentially no tint) and 70% light transmission on front and 40% in the Rear. The lower the percentage the darker the tint.
  • Oct 11, 2012
    dadaleus
Right. I bought minimum tint on the front and pano (since Tesla already tinted that heavily--but I wanted maximal UV protection and the added benefit of heat blocking), whereas I had a darker tint put on the back passenger and hatchback widows.

So I went to my friend who is a motorcycle cop, while we were at his house (this was back in January 2010, after taking my Roadster home from CES) and said, HYPOTHETICALLY lets say I had a Laser shifter on my car, and before I had a chance to finish the word "car" he was up off the couch and said, "let's play cops and robbers"! We went outside and he took his motorcycle which had the laser gun and told me to drive towards him and when I heard it go off to check my speed (it was on his street so I was not going fast). I followed instructions. After done, he asked how fast I was going & I said about 30. He showed me the gun and it read "error"! Then I asked him to give me the honest truth: If I was rolling through his speed trap and he saw that, what would he think/do? He said, 'honestly, I'd think you had a jammer but honestly, it is a ton of red tape to get the authority to search your car & a ton of paper work and court hearings to follow it through." He said that unless I had given him a reason to really want to give me a ticket, he knew that in the next few minutes someone else would roll through his trap that he'd more easily be able to take down so he'd probably just let me go. Now of course, remember, this was just a HYPOTHETICAL conversation!

I have a similar setup to this Escort setup. (BEL STiR+ and a Laser Interceptor Jammer). Pretty new but here was my research results for those curious:

False alarms: this is where the game has moved on from Valentine etc. The escort and Bel have GPS built in, and then as you drive, if it detects a signal 3 times on the same frequency and location, it will store it and not alarm on it again (on the basis that for the exact location and frequency it's likely some stationary thing not a cop). Hugely reduces/eliminates the false problem. Yes there is also the escort live thing which connects to a network, but my research led me to believe it lacks adoption/critical mass at this point

Laser: In CA on the highway, laser is kind of the thing. Unfortunately laser detection is useless, just a notification of an impending ticket. In CA (to my knowledge) it's a fix-it ticket and very rarely issued if you get caught with it. The high end escort system has laser jamming built in (the 9500 I think), but it's a mediocre system. The Bel (also owned and made by escort) is pretty similar to the escort on radar but you can buy a la carte without the laser, and then get the Laser Interceptor which is the highest performing unit of that type

Cost: Yeah, it's ridiculous. A couple grand for parts and maybe a grand to install. A sane person would probably just drive slow or eat the tickets.

BTW, the high beam feature on the Mobileye works great! It automatically turns the high beams on when its dark and there are no cars in view, and goes back to low beams as soon as a car comes in view.

It's part of Mobileye. Not anything from Tesla. I don't know technically exactly how they connected it to the high beams of the car. I presume they attached something to the wiring for the high beam stalk on the steering wheel.

I'm considering installing this system when my Model S arrives but I'm concerned about placement of the radar/laser receiver behind the front grille mesh. I assume that's where Al and Ed's installed yours, right? My concern was that the mesh would impede detection. What's been you experience?

Been looking at the 9500ci installation instructions and boy it's invasive, wires have to run all over. The ones from the rear laser shifter and gps unit looked particularly problematic. I'd be scared to let anyone install it on a car like the Model S they've never dealt with! The 8500ci has much less, but still requires wires running to the forward detector and the display.

Daedalus, I'm guessing they drilled a hole in your dash to route the power for the display?
  • Nov 9, 2012
    artsci
Totally depends on how easy to remove the trim in the frunk and trunk. If Model S is like other cars, it's not very complicated to run the various wires. It's a piece of cake for a professional installer, and without an engine, the Model S should be easier. My guess is that a hole in the dash will not be necessary as there will routes for existing cables/wires that can also be used for the radar/laser cables.

I share the same concerns as ckessel above. I'm comfortable with the 8500ci + passport shifters for integration and simplicity or the 8500ci + either blinders or LI's for better performance. Concluded the rear shifters aren't worth the price and install risks.

I've been frozen here in the Boston area for 2 months regarding the radar install due to lack of experience by the installers with the Model S. I had the good fortune to run into the the Boston SC manager on the NYT Road Trip in Milford, got a lot of good insights on several issues, but not on the radar install. He did indicate that there may be issues with easy pass behind the grill, which may imply performance problems with the 8500. It's still not clear to me if either the radar or shifters will work behind the mesh.

I visited two installers (the only two i'm aware of locally), and neither had any experience with the Model S. The car is superbly engineered and without any body noises after close to 3 months - i don't want someone without exerience to screw it up. I'm also concerned about an install that looks good but is ineffective.

I'd appreciate understanding anyone's experience post-install and advice on working with someone not familiar with the Model S. Does the TSC provide any support for these installers?

    Thanks.

I posted my experience of installing the 9500ci here. I did visit a local installer too, and was reasonably happy he'd do a good job, but for $600 I was reasonably happy I could do a good job too :). I didn't run the rear shifter as its not really needed here in TX, plus it sure does stand out on the plate. If I do run it, I'd attach it to the rear valance, which is not ideal, but there's really no other option. I've no squeaks or rattles since doing the install, and everything came apart very logically, there's really no 'gotchas'.
  • Mar 3, 2013

I can't offer much about the installation process. But everything has held up fine and no rattles or anything. I had them move the radar display to under the 17" display instead of on the upper left as was shown in the pic at the top of the thread. Definitely like it better there.

Dadaleus, my car is I'm the shop here in Philly right now getting curb sensors, curb alert pro and Mobileye installed. I want to install the Mobileye display on the dash by the pillar like yours, but don't see a way to do it without drilling into the leather on the dash which I don't really want to do. It does have a
Sticky tape for installing also though. Did you have yours mounted with screws or is it mounted on the dash
    With the mounting tape?

Al & Eds West Hollywood made a custom plastic L piece and attached it using some kind of mounting tape.

Ian: So sorry I didn't see your message until now! I'll go take a pic right now.

    - - - Updated - - -

Sorry I didn't see this post before Ian. Here you go. The green light just under the top of the steering wheel is the LED status. I raised the steering wheel so you could see that. I'd put it to the right edge of the hood over the speedometer or put it in the vent as someone else on here did so that you can see it with the steering wheel in a lower position.

The control panel is below the 17" display as shown on the bottom right here. I'd probably have them set it a little deeper back so it wouldn't be so visible to a cop standing at the window.

Al and Ed's AitoSound in West Hollywood Ca. is the place to go for those of us in Southern California. They did a great job installing, MobilEye system, Radar system, front and rear bumper parking sensors, window tinting, clear bra and paint protection. Systems are working great. Max the manager was great and the installers all are very knowledgable about Teslas. There were three MS being worked on while mine was on-site. They also were working on an incredible audio upgrade for one of them. The owner, Elle is very friendly and knowledgable. They do high quality work with the best products. While they are not inexpensive, I do believe that I received the best quality product and service. They appear to be also working on identifying future upgrades to the car. For instance improved interior lighting for the trunk and blind spot detectors.

Thanks to this forum, I was able to add the technology items that were not available at the factory. The install looks as if it was installed at the factory. Hopefully the Tesla engineers will pay attention and work with Mobileye to allow for integration of their display unit into the Model S displays.

Recommend that you check them out if you are in Southern California.

Thank you Al and Ed's in West Hollywood!

After Jason (dadaleus) showed me his installation last weekend at his home (Thank You for that), I went on Tuesday to order the mobileye, blind spot detection/warning and Cila Jet at Al&Ed's WH from Elie. I will post after installation impressions. To be honest I went to another Al&Ed's close by (Vista) on Monday and the guy told me he would do that too even for a cheaper price, but had the impression he had never done it. So now to the service that Elie offered me not knowing that I was elsewhere, because I live in San Diego and I have a trip to Germany coming up from LAX, he offered me to drop off the car with him get a ride to LAX to dropp me off and he will pick me up at LAX to get the modified car no cost attached. And he will charge my car with his charging station he is using because he like me has also a BMW Active E that he is charging at work - super. Because I was already thinking to by a transportable generator and take it with me when parking that long time at the airport to make sure when the battery is drained to charge up that much to get to the SC at Hawthorn Airport.

Added blind spot & parking sensors, trunk lighting, rear USB, horntones, black wheels

    Hi all,

In September I posted about the initial modifications made to my Sig S: Collision warning, radar detection, window film paint armor installed on my S

Last week my car went back under the knife with Elie's team at Al & Eds West Hollywood for a few more improvements. Noting so exciting as Ian did, but some unique things nonetheless so I thought I'd update you all with a new thread given the old title doesn't really fit anymore. (Mods, feel free to merge and revise title if you prefer.)

    Powder Coated Black 21" Wheels:

Elie already posted pics of this bit. Frankly, I'm not really into cosmetic changes, but I had always thought that the car would look better with the wheels black rather than grey. So when Elie suggested it and the price was right, I figured why not. Well, I'm super happy with the result.

    Verdict: Very happy.

    Blind spot sensor:

I do a ton of freeway driving. One thing that I find a bit uncomfortable in the S is I'm frequently surprised to find a car appear from my blind spot that I didn't know was there. When I learned to drive, I was taught to always be aware of all the cars around me. So this really creeps me out every time it happens as it makes me worried I'm going to end up changing lanes into someone one of these days.

I considered a blind spot mirror (which is certainly a cheaper solution), but I just couldn't bring myself to do it: It's one thing to not be into making cosmetic improvements, its another to do something that just looks cheap on such a gorgeous car.

Well, these sensors work great. The notification is something you can't miss when you look at the side mirror to make a lane change, but is very unobtrusive otherwise. Following up on Ian's post, it seems like Elie's team has worked out these kinks. It's much better without sound, and sound really isn't at all necessary. The visual warning is plenty since you are looking in that direction anyway. As far as the crossed wires he reported, mine clearly is setup properly: When I signal right and something is to my right, the right light flashes. Objects to my left are ignored and the left sensor remains dark. Of course the opposite is true when I signal left. Thanks for being the guinea pig to help them work out all the kinks Ian!

You can see the outside of these in Elie's pics like this one:

It's black because apparently the blind spot sensors can't take the four-coat paint and still work properly. But really, I don't even notice it so not terribly unhappy with that. The product works great.

    Verdict: Very happy.

    Parking sensors:

I'm not quite as happy with these yet. I'm hoping Elie's team can tune them to work better. I'm just getting too many false alarms, and I fear that it will just train me to ignore them. The front sensor seems to need some kind of calibration as it beeps randomly when traveling at high speed. I suspect they just didn't account for the car going into low suspension mode at higher speeds, and the car is just picking up the ground. Thankfully they gave me a power switch for the front sensor, so I can disable it when this happens, but inevitably I forget to turn it back on again which negates the benefit of having the sensor at all.

The rear sensor works better, which is good because I'm not aware of any way to turn it off. But another thing is that both the front and rear sensors pick up objects not just in the car's path but to the sides as well. When I pull up my driveway to my garage, I drive between my wife's SUV and some bushes. There's probably a foot of clearance on each side, but both the front and rear sensors beep the entire way up the driveway even though no objects are in the path of the car forward or backward. As a result, I'm not sure I'd know if there was actually something to be worried about in my path that I couldn't see. It beeps differently depending on proximity, so if I got within one foot of a solid object, I think I'd notice the change in tone.

The paint matching is very very nice. The installation really looks factory installed as you can see in these pictures:
    Outside_Sensors.jpg Front_Parking.jpg Rear_Parking.jpg

Verdict: Needs some calibration work. Ask me again later.

    Trunk lighting:

Got a big win with some additional trunk lighting. I had been frustrated by how dark the trunk is at night with only the one little overhead light on the trunk door. I would be rooting around in the trunk to find something, and just couldn't see anything. Max at Al & Eds came up with these strip lights and the way they are mounted they look totally factory installed. The trunk is now fully and beautifully lit!

Verdict: Awesome! I love it!!!

    USB outlets in back seat:

We do a lot of family road trips, and we're an Apple device family so the kids are usually watching and playing with iPads in the back seat n these longs trips. A source of some inconvenience was the limited charging options in the car. Between my wife's and my phones, a USB stick for music, an LTE hotspot, the kids iPads, and a couple other random devices there's simply no way to keep them all plugged in. Al & Eds came up with these additional 2.1 amp USB outlets for me for the back seat. Locating them was pretty hard because there wasn't a good spot that wouldn't really seem obtrusive.

The best compromise was this location at the bottom of the back of the center console. It's a little hard to reach from the back seat, but it avoids a cable mess running to the front seat and its close enough for standard iPhone cords to reach the devices attached to the back of the front seats or in the kids laps. And it avoided anything that would interfere with someone sitting in the center seat. Its great how unobtrusive this is. It's flush and very subtle, yet nearly doubles the charging capacity of the car. My understanding is its wired to a separate breaker from the front 12v outlet so it doesn't compete for power.

Verdict: Awesome! I love it!!!

Mount for displays below 17" display:

I loved what they did for Ian in his for mounting the radar and Mobileye display, so I asked them to do the same for me. I just didn't like the way that mounted individually these displays just didn't fit in with the smooth lines of the Model S dash. This mount completely changes the dynamic in my opinion and everything fits in much better.

Verdict: Awesome! I love it!!!

    Horntones:

Ian had this fun thing in his Roadster that let him make crazy fun sound effects from his car. This tickled my funny bone in a car that has no motor noise. Plus I have kids, and I knew how much fun they'd have with it. Now I can't get them to stop pushing the buttons and scaring people around me! You can see the control panel for it in the picture above. That's a temporary location. I plan to get a drop in center console, and I'll move this control panel inside of that.

It's a totally frivolous thing, but it works perfectly. Al & Eds doesn't sell the product: I bought it myself and paid Elie's guys to put it in for me since they did it before with Ian's. They did a perfect job! You can find out more about the product here. Horntones MP3 Car Horn is an air horn, train horn, fog horn and musical horn.

We've loaded it up with our own sounds. I'm a big Disneyland nut, so I put in the monorail horn and a bunch of other Disneyland sound effects ("Termine ser sentados, por favor!"). Other examples are the scanner sounds of KITT and Cylons (great for slowing driving through parking lots), HAL introducing himself, Star Trek warp sounds (great for accelerating), and various Star Wars sound effects like Darth Vader breathing. Dropping the kids off at school will never be the same.

    Verdict: Very happy.

Whew, lots of stuff and really pleased with how it came out. My intent was to be done once and for all, and to have the car I want for the long term. The Model S is such a fantastic car, and I just wanted a few little tweaks and now I have them! Thanks Elie.

Wow! Jason, the black wheels look awesome! I'm going to have to consider that too now. :)

Do you have pics of the trunk lighting? Your attachments didn't work... I'm going to do it myself, but I'm curious how A&E did it.

    Congrats on all the upgrades!

    Thanks!

Would the sensors have worked if they were a foot or so lower and located in the black section of the rear bumper?

    Awesome stuff!

Do you have any pics of with the center armrest removed? I would like to see how much space is in that area where the usb ports are installed.

I looked at the install instructions for you and it says the sensors must be between 1.5' and 2.25' from the ground, so I'm guessing that wouldn't work but I'm no expert. It has to be pointed at where a car in the next lane would be, and I don't know if the road would interfere that far down.

I believe it's this product: Blind Spot Detection System #BSDS-003016 - Products

I wish I did but I didn't see it when they had that open, and I checked the pics they sent me and there doesn't appear to be one of that. Sorry.

Dadaleus - great work here (loved the Gallons of Light commercial too), Al & Ed's do amazing stuff, very impressive all around, the USB plugs in the back seat are a brilliant mod...

Wow! Love the mods and love your assessment and love the "verdict" at the end. Is that too much LOVE to go around?

Off topic, but my eye is drawn to it and I made the same "mistake". When I was applying the HOV stickers, I too lined up the curve of the right side of the sticker with the curve of the wheel well.
Perfect, right? Somehow, when I stepped back, as in this picture of yours as well, it seems that the sticker is pointed up to the right.
If I were to do it over, I would have backed the sticker back to the left and then lowered the right end of the sticker down more so that the writing looks like it is aligned.

Okay, I never understood the complaining about the CA HOV stickers until seeing them now for the first time.Shame you have to have those on the car.

Never can be too much love Ian! See my response re the stickers in your thread.

Thanks. Really wanted the USB as when the car was full on a long trip (like during filming of Gallons) and everyone was using their devices, we quickly ran into issues keeping everyone charged. I think this is going to work great.

I am in Germany now, most enjoying thing the autobahn drive with 150 mph. Elie will put the new forged wheels on my car and will post pictures when done. Now I cannot wait to be back to see all the mods Elie will have done.
