ggnykk Just trying to gauge the interests of the new P100D Ludicrous. This poll apply to both Model S and Model X since I can't create two polls in both forum asking the same question.
Aug 25, 2016
ggnykk Great poll result so far, please keep it going guys.
Aug 25, 2016
Swissmoneychf I was thinking about waiting for the non p version, but then I remembered that the autonomy of 90d is enough for me. Not worth the 10k more yet.

GoTslaGo X-100D, 20", Premium pkg (BioHazard Defense!), AutoPilot (2.0?)....![]()
It'll be the perfect road-tripping vehicle!
Aug 26, 2016
ggnykk I initially have the same thought as you do. But after looking more into the specs, that extra $10k give you 16% more range, which is a lot. The Model S non-performance 100D will have around 340 miles of EPA range. Plus, 100D give you faster supercharging speed and better cooling. It highly likely has AP 2.0 as well. Well worth the $10k difference.
Aug 26, 2016
sillydriver How about adding "No, it's an attractive car, but the P85DL/P90DL I own will do just fine."
Aug 26, 2016
kort677 the poll answers don't reflect enough views, I would vote no but not because I think that it is a waste, it is because I am in a 90d and this just isn't enough of a leap forward to consider trading my car in.
Aug 26, 2016
kort677 at this point in time it does not have AP 2.0.

tstafford After a year with my P85D and spending the $5K on the retrofit, I'm pretty convinced that a 100D (or the then current model) will be my next Tesla. The P-ness is fun and all but it's just not worth the money.
Aug 26, 2016
MSullivan Agreed, I have a two month old 75D, short of it being $50,000 I am not in the market for any new car.

AMPd No, waiting for the 100D
Maybe one day I'll upgrade my P90D to P100DL
Aug 26, 2016
ElectricTundra Very happy with my P85D. Little to no benefit of the extra battery (assuming we get a supercharger somewhere between Nashville & Birmingham). We've not had difficulties going wherever we need nor of finding charging except around North Alabama.
The extra performance would be fun but not worth the money.
AP 2.0 will very likely result in an upgrade though. Didn't see a poll option for this.

ggnykk Good point, I should have added that one. At this point, it is too late for me to change the selection. I think "No, definitely not" is the closest option. Sorry.
Aug 26, 2016
ArtInCT As a P90DL owner of six months, and a person desirous to maintain marital bliss, any discussion of switching to a P100DL would be certainly problematic. I am not venturing out on that path. Totally happy with my P90DL, it is TERRIFYING enough.
Note, your pole answer choices do not accommodate my situation. Such as,
NO, I have a P85DL/P90DL and am VERY HAPPY with it.
Oops I see that ggnykk has posted something similar.... I am too lazy to fix it....
Aug 26, 2016
ggnykk I want to fix it and looked into it. The "edit" button on the poll went away already, and doesn't allow me to edit the selection. When I first setup the poll, and it only has a few votes, it still has that "edit" option, but not now.

Ardie 80, 80D, P80D, 90, 90D, P90D, P100D. Model S, Model X, or hold out for the Model 3
Decisions, decisions.
You may think that Insane / Ludicrous / (and eventually, Maximum Plaid) modes are silly, until you get to actually experience them.
Its amazing what a few seconds will do to you.
So you start thinking about folding it into the price.
And then, you have to argue with yourself to reach that tipping point between a price you "were" comfortable with, and an increase you are trying to justify.
-- Ardie
Or maybe you'll wait a bit longer for that P125D.
Aug 26, 2016
shokunin There will always be something better around the corner. In a year we'll have brand new pack designs around the 21700 cells and hopefully even better performance. However, I wonder if the larger cells have more internal resistance and while it increases energy density, it decreases performance. But I that's a whole 'nother topic.
I'm not willing to risk or bet that the AP 1.0 can be upgraded to AP 2.0 hardware, which is what i really want. It may have been on the roadmaps when mobileye was the vendor of choice. Now that they are out, plans and upgrades were thrown out the window.
At some point the motors are going to need to be revisited with this extra power, yet another revision and who know what new levels of performance they will bring.
The 100KW pack is compelling. My P85 pack based on wk057's research and my own experience as well, is an 81kw pack (77kw usable) and I bet the 90 is more like a 86kw pack and the 100 is going to be actually close to 100. This is why the mileage jump from 75-90 is so small and why the jump fro 90-100 is so large and worth the extra $10k IMHO.
Aug 26, 2016
ggnykk Yup I agree, there is always something new around the corner every year. The $10k extra to upgrade from 90 to 100 kwh is well worth the price.

flashflood Right, and there are two flavors of this: the occasional must-have killer feature, and the steady accumulation of smaller improvements. For me it was the latter. I currently have a 2014 P85. The P85D that came out six months later was tempting, but not enough of a delta to justify the cost of doing a trade-in. Then came Autopilot 1.0, for which mine doesn't have the hardware. Then P90D. And Ludicrous mode. And better, ventilated seats. Finally along comes the P100D offering 315 miles and 2.5 sec 0-60. That was the last straw. MUST! HAVE!
Aug 26, 2016
ggnykk Haha, congrats on finally not resisting the temptation. You must have a lot of patience to wait that long to upgrade.
Aug 27, 2016
ggnykk Looks like Elon guessed it correctly that the demand will be around 10 to 12% of the production. Around 13% of people so far said that they will order a P100DL. The sample size is still very small though.
Aug 27, 2016
ArtInCT So far there is not a single P100D order logged into the TMC Order Tracking Spreadsheets.... The day after the P85D and P90D announcements there was great activity there.... What does this mean?
Do many of the new folks here on TMC apparently not know about the order tracking spreadsheets?
Has the 2YR lease of P90D inventory cars sucked up all the demand out there?
I know we are a small subset of the total Tesla community, probably less than 10% of the total, but not a single order logged?
Aug 27, 2016
kort677 could it be that the majority of people on TMC are current owners who are satisfied with their current car and do not see the new so improved as to warrant a costly upgrade? If I was a first time buyer I'd be more inclined to consider the new car. for me the increased battery capacity isn't enough of a reason to trade up. I could have already had ludicrous speed but I didn't get it on my current car and in order to get the bigger battery I'd be forced to have the costly L option, something I feel isn't necessary.
to sum up, IMHO this new version just isn't that much of a leap forward like the introduction of the AP was.

jbcarioca I have a P85DL and have speced a P100DL and am debating. With 27,000 miles on mine now the resale is probably as good as it will get, but...I really want the Model 3 hottest version, so I'm torn. I need to decide soon I suppose but I do not feel urgency. Anyway, with new form factor as the next step I am expecting 120 kWh or so next year or so, and maybe I'll just wait. However the extra range would eliminate the two places where I most often must use non-Supercharger options on trips.
This is absolutely a First World Problem!

LargeHamCollider I would be extremely surprised if a 120kWh battery became available in the next two years, I think there's a 50% chance of a 105kWh next year and a less than 15% chance of anything more than that. I think there's a decent chance that Model S/X will not transition to the new 21-70 battery format as doing so will (all other things being equal) reduce the power density of their battery packs.

flashflood I'm trying to learn from experience. I am typing this reply on my 2009 (!) MacBook Pro 17-inch. To be fair though, it wasn't that I didn't want to upgrade, it's that I didn't want to downgrade (to a 15-inch screen). I've finally resigned myself to the fact that the 17-inch models are never coming back, so as soon as the 2016 MacBook Pro refresh comes out (reportedly this fall), I'm in -- even if it doesn't have everything I'm hoping it will (mainly USB-C, Kaby Lake, and better battery life).

int32_t Certainly not me. I can't afford it in the first place, and even if I could ... I would probably wait for a plain 100D. Ludicrous is kind of an extra helping of icing on an already tall cake that I really wouldn't want or need.

Aug 28, 2016
xav- What about option 7/ "I am not a millionaire and cannot afford one"
?
You may want to consider adding that one.
Aug 28, 2016
Wattup I voted no. As a P85D owner, more acceleration is very low on the priority list, I have plenty now. So the cost for the added range is a waste, it is not a big enough change to make a difference in how I use the car. I am happy to wait for new battery technology to take the capacity to 200kwh rather than messing around squeezing the maximum out of the same batttery technology I already have
Aug 28, 2016
jbcarioca No, I bought mine. I'm still dithering, so probably I'll wait for a while.
Luckily for me everyone in my family who wanted med school has already gone. 'Everyone' in my case was 'no one' except two relatives who did not need my support.
Still there are many things that the $50,000 or so could more logically do than upgrade my already ludicrous P85DL. Since when has logic any role in these decisions? If logic were involved I would not even own a car in the US, I'd rent whenever I needed one. I've already rented Tesla twice, the latest one a P90D, but there is no logical defense for that either.
Frankly, we all know that our Roadster/S/X are subsidizing development of vehicles that will have logical justification. So, I'll continue dithering until the itch becomes irresistible...

I'm very happy with it, same with last trade in. I have a 6-year loan on this one, where I put the minimum down, the trade in will cover what I owe after 1 yr and 9 months of ownership plus put about $1,000 back in my pocket. So better than most leases. The new car is more expensive, but after the fed tax incentive I'll be only 10k out of pocket for the same payment that I had before.

Xenoilphobe Arrgghhh.. took the wife today to test drive the P90DL, she saw a blue on tan leather 90D (new nose cone), and fell in love with it. She told me that we should replace both P85's for the 90D since it is such an improvement over the standard P85 (autopilot, AWD, new seats, summon mode, range increase, new car warranty BLAH, BLAH. BLAH)....
I really want the P100D, but she might see me as selfish, since her car is only 3 months older than mine.... wasn't planning on that outcome today. Wish Telsa would provide a multi-car discount and a loyal customer discount...

Camera-Cruiser So tempting, but then, so is the P100D. I'm glad your 2,700 miles away!
Aug 29, 2016
ArtInCT The use of the spreadsheets vary. However, the data on the spreadsheet allows you to make good estimates on various lengths of time (in days) for each step in the production of your model S. For instance, how long does it take to get from Fremont to the New England area?
What is the typical number of days for the car to be in production. Etc Etc... Also you can analyze the option and color choices that others made on your build...
The spreadsheets are organized by quarter and you should enter your data into the spreadsheet that reflects the quarter in which your car will be delivered. If you are ordering with a delivery date very far out into the future, then you should use the spreadsheet that is assigned to the next or future quarter.
There are tabs at the bottom which get you to the various sheets.
I hope this helps....

STbreaker I'm happy every day because I'm driving my (practical) dream car and I love how Tesla continues to push the performance envelope at the top end. While improved greatly since debut, Tesla is still lagging behind on interior materials and details. If I could comfortably afford a P100D, I would rather buy/keep a fun midsize sedan (WRX maybe?) and put in a reservation for a Model 3 to get my Tesla fix. Then I would start looking into seriously crafted supercars like a Mercedes GT or Audi R8 or even better, a lower end/slightly used Aston Martin, Ferrari, or Lambo (Huracan is my not-so-practical dream car).
Aug 29, 2016

Model S M.D. Agree with above. That spreadsheet gives us something to do while we wait. We can compare similarly ordered cars, geographic locations, specs, etc. to determine when we could potentially expect our cars to be produced, delivered, etc.
Aug 29, 2016
STbreaker I was pretty surprised during my quest as well. BMW only had a used 550 xdrive for me to drive. Mercedes had nothing around to fit what I was shopping for. I drove an A7 and liked it though not as much as the Model S obviously. I guess if you want more expensive cars than that you really need a car broker or something.

Skipdd Definitely 100D for me..
I am 1.25 years into a 3 yr lease on an 85D. I am way over the 15k/yr average on the lease. Based on my discussions with my SA I am guesstimating my break even between lease overage and remaining payments to put me somewhere in the 2.5 yr timeframe. The 100D is likely to be the top end for non-P models at that point, with hopefully next gen sensors to boot.
Am looking forward to the extra range a 100D will have.

Xminus6 There used to be a Porsche dealer down in Redondo Beach. I went with a friend of mine there once when he was looking to get a Boxster S. They were still fairly new at the time but I'll never forget the arrogance of the "salesmen" at that place. We asked if they had any to test drive and the guy literally laughed at us and said "No! If you're lucky you could buy one and drive it home in six months. But we do have some used 911s you can sit in and make 'Vroom' noises." My friend and I drove up in his 911 Cabriolet, so it wasn't like we were just random teenagers walking in off the street. Glad that place went out of business.

Aug 30, 2016
STbreaker Porsche is right next to Audi here and I've had a good experience. I was kind of expecting what you described because people often tell me I still look like a teenager. But I did ask to drive a Macan (and then a Cayenne with my wife on a later visit) and not a 911 so maybe that played into it. Mercedes was the one that did that to me when I asked to see an E65 AMG.
On a separate note, I think the inside of Porsche dealers are gorgeous. They really nailed the upscale feel, especially compared to the sterile warehouse white of Audi next door.
