Paint: Multi-coat Red part 1

So I finalized my order last week, happy with my black-on-black-with-CF and silver wheels choice, but the very next day, my colleague tells me that he called Tesla and they told him that the 2013 red (he said the rep didn't call it sunset red but something else like fire red) was on track for March or April. My current car is set for February or March, so I could probably live with another month.

So, any of you have any additional word on the 2013 red? Any pictures? My colleague sent me one but the lighting was odd. I'd like to spend the weekend second guessing myself and trying to decide on whether I should switch to red-on-black-with-CF and maybe grey wheels (but probably still silver). Can any of you help me with my obsession? I'd appreciate it.

I haven't heard any dates, but I thought it was quite conspicuous that the Motor Trend shots of Elon were in a Sunset/2013 Red Model S.

Thanks for the pointer. I've seen those pictures before but without the red. Interesting to see red next to signature red. I think you've captured it with "exuberant". Hm. I'm not sure I'm that exuberant a kind of guy. Signature would be more my shade of red if I went that way, I think.

I'll also say that I was a little surprised at how it looks with the pano. Looks a little... off. Am I the only one who thinks that looks strange?
  • Nov 17, 2012

Red w/pano looks fine -- my Audi A3 has nearly the same color and also has a glass + black top. Looks great on the Audi. Even though I like the color scheme on a small car like the A3, I find it a little overwhelming on the much larger Model S.
  • Nov 17, 2012

That's not the pano roof btw. The only 2013 Red car built so far has the solid Black roof.

Drove the Sunset Red non-performance at the NJ Get Amped event. It had a black roof but no pano. The color could use a little tweaking (and, yes, was very similar to the Audi red which I have on an A4). I've deferred my order until the red is available but haven't heard anything different than what others are saying on this thread (at least directly from Tesla). While I typically like blue or green, they just looked too black to me unless in bright sunlight ... and even then it was too subtle. Here it is in a "real-life" situation with shadows and reflections.

I was at the Tesla Fashion Island store a couple of months back and they have the 'new' red in the showroom. Took lots of pics but don't have them with me right now. My reservation is in the P46xx sequence, but currently planning on holding off until the red is available. My customer service rep thinks that Tesla may open the system up for 'red' reservations in early 2013, although shipments would not be before 'spring'. Hard to wait that long just to get the color I want, but it will be that color every time I see the car for the next several years, and 6 months after I get the car I won't remember how long I waited...

Tesla does not begin production of the multi coat red until March 1. Likely first deliveries will be in late March. My delivery window is April/May. This red is not the same as the Sunset Red. It's got more depth and richness. Check out this photo:

Not only does @artsci appreciate a beautiful red car but he has an extensive list of modifications that he'll be making. I'll just drive mine down to MD when it's delivered and have him manage my mods as well ... nothing like having an experienced hand taking care of it.

Just had a bit of a discussion with a product specialist about Sunset Red. He assured me the 2013 Red is Sunset Red. It was seen at the Get Amped tour, there are several shots and video of people testing this car. It's the one with the rear-facing seats and black roof. He also told me the paint samples currently at the Tesla Stores ARE, in fact, Sunset Red and look darker in comparison to the other shots due to lighting. Those shots are in bright sunlight.

This is not what others have been told by Tesla reps, including me at the several Tesla stores I've visited. If it is the same color, why did they change the name? I doubt for the fun of it. The wanted to signal a change. But I'm going to the top for an answer.

Ok. Re-read the email. No mention of Sunset Red. I think I must've been equating the Get Amped red with Sunset Red. Anyway, the pic he linked to is the Get Amped car. This is pretty much confirmation on the color. Again, most interestingly is the mention that the color samples are correct.

    Hi Joshua,

Thanks for reaching out to us. This is Mitchell Baker at our headquarters in California. I wanted to send you some actual pictures of the car from our test drive events over the summer. This is what the actual production version of the new red paint will look like. I am attaching pictures to this email and also sending this link to an online gallery. Model S Photo Collection - Imgur It is a much brighter paint than the Signature red that was on the first thousand Model S. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks,

    Hi Josh,

It is the actual car color painted on the sample. It is just a smaller area so it's hard to get a good idea of what it will look like on the car. Since the red is a multi-coat paint, it looks a slightly different shade depending on the light. In my opinion, I think the sample looks slightly darker. It is a very bright red color, like a Ferrari or fire truck. I found this video this morning of it driving in sunlight. Tesla Model S 2013 Sunset Red - YouTube This may help too. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

The car picture is from the Detroit auto show. The paint sample is multicoat red from the tesla store in Bellevue. It has very fine glitter in the paint but definitely not metallic. Good color match between the pictures. This should be close to the production color I think.

As George B has not responded yet (he's a very busy man!) I can say that his email confirmed that the Sunset Red and the Multi-Coat red are indeed the same color. So I stand corrected.
  • Jan 19, 2013
    StevePro
According to other threads, the color is supposed to be very close in tint as Sunset Red, but they added a fine mica layer (thus multi-coat) to give it more depth. Looking at the samples in the stores, it looked similar to the pearl effect in the multi-coat white, but much more subtle with super-fine particles. At least to my eye.
  • Jan 19, 2013
    DrDave
I thought the multi-portion was the same as the Signature Red rather than the Pearl White - meaning it comes from a layer of clearcoat that is dyed red followed by a coat of "clear" clearcoat. The Pearl is definitely a mica layer over a solid white basecoat, but I don't think the reds have this - the mica is already a part of the basecoat that is initially applied.

    March 1 production

If they are starting multi coat red march first won't we start to see them very soon thereafter? Perhaps we should have to configure delivery very soon (Surprised not some already)!?

If they start on March 1, sure. But March may mean, unfortunately, March 15 or March 30. Or even April if there is a glitch. Plus there are other cars interspersed. 40kWh builds that have been on hold, non-air suspension vehicles, later reservation numbers in all configurations and, maybe, European deliveries (depending on when those start).

I hope you're right and they crank out a big batch of reds right at the beginning of March but I'm optimistically hoping for an early to mid-April delivery. I'm pretty sure I read about someone who signed the paperwork immediately after the red was available got a Mar/April estimate.
  • Jan 20, 2013

There's nothing more here to complicate production here than a change in the paint color. So I don't think there will be too many delays if any.
  • Jan 20, 2013
    andrewket
If it doesn't complicate things then one has to wonder why Tesla needed to, or choose to, wait until March to start building red cars. There must be some risk or downtime required to reconfigure the paint shop.
  • Jan 20, 2013

It's to give the Signature folks a few months of exclusivity with no other competing red Model S. Also I have heard they can only do two multi-layer colours at once--I don't know if that's actually correct though.

Just saw the Sunset Red at Lincoln Road

Just got back from the Lincoln road store. I gave my test drive to a guy with a reservation that hadn't finalized yet. I'm a "blue car" guy.BUT, the Sunset Red is STUNNING. Just gorgeous. It's so nice some of the Sig Red folks are gonna be jealous. If you're on the fence and you don't get to see it, just go ahead and you will not be sorry. I took some less than perfect iPhone pics that I'll post here if there's any interest, or just PM me and I'll email them.

EDIT: Oh By the way. They had the rear facing seats installed and I don't need them. If you do, I think they're pretty darn cool. Kids only except in a real pinch but pretty darn neat. I took a couple pics that don't really do them justice but you can see them also if you wish.

  • Jan 21, 2013
    Al Sherman
Not sure. I never asked, nor was it mentioned. I DID get the distinct impression that either one of us,or both would have been allowed to "crawl allover it" if we had asked. We just didn't.In all truth, I really just wanted to experience a Tesla store. That's why I gave my test drive slot away to a res holder who had not finalized yet. My feeling is: the initial process is done and though I continue to gather volumes of info on this forum, I will be crawling all over MY MS soon enough. Again, I truly felt that at any time the store employees (who couldn't have been nicer btw) would have immediately moved the ropes and allowed touchy feely stuff.

I've seen them roped off and not. Santana Row, nope. Westchester, yes. DC, nope. Not sure what the difference was. When I told the guys at Westchester that I was a reservation holder they let me spend as much time in the car as I wanted. I'm sure they would have done the same thing if I didn't have a reservation.

    George,

I'm sorry to bother with you with what is no doubt a trivial question but there's a discussion on the Tesla Motors site about whether the multi-coat red that will go into production on March 1 is the same as the Sunset red seen on the Get Amped tour cars. Some say it's the same, and I and several others are arguing that it's different. Can you set us straight? All of us with red on order are eager to know.

    Thanks much.

I think we all agree that Sunset red = multi-red = red. My question however is- has this red changed color? The sales lady said that the red used to have more orange in it and now it's a much darker red. The sample on the wall looked very dark. Are the pictures I have seen in this thread the new darker red or the older more orangey red?

When I was at the Newport Beach store last September, they had a red Model S in the store with black cloth interior (their test drive car was Blue/Tan). That red was "brighter" than the Signature Red, and looked okay, but not nearly as good as the Sig red to me.

    Has that particular red changed?
  • Feb 21, 2013
    DLM270
This is the same thing I have been told by several different Tesla people, (less orange, deaper color...like the new samples), but others have been told the color is not changing from the Sunset Red we saw in August at Palo Alto. I guess the only way to know for sure is to wait a few weeks and see what actually comes off the PRODUCTION line.

I think it's been confirmed by Blankenship and others that the 2013 Red is the color we've seen at the Get Amped tour over the summer, and it IS the same color as the samples that made it out to the stores. The color looks quite different inside vs. full sun. I don't think anyone of us will be dissappointed.

This is what Elon said earlier this week at the Q4 2012 Earnings Q & A:

  • May 28, 2013

Nope, no one is claiming the Sig Red is the same as the multi-coat red. There WAS discussion about what, exactly, the multi-coat red was going to look like (was it the red from the original Get Amped Tour? Was it the red shown in the Motor Trend CotY photo shoot? Was it the red on the samples at the Tesla Stores?) - but now that debate is over.

Things I kind of prefer on the prototype:
    1. The recessed T on the side of the front fender (vs. the triangle).
    2. The windshield wipers are more hidden when inactive.
    3. The nose cone.
    4. The chrome below the doors is absent.
