ronmerkord I was just in one of our local Tesla stores yesterday, and noticed that their streaming video now includes scenes of a Model X, including a quick shot of the back seats with the hatch open. I'm not sure if the shots are of the old version or new, since it was pretty quick. There was also a quick shot of an X next to a model S.
I'm pretty sure this is fairly new, as we go by various stores on a monthly basis. Mainly I was happy to see any mention of a Model X in the Tesla stores, as previously there was absolutely nothing in the stores referring to the X. They are also now stocking Model X shirts and hats.

Electric700 Glad to see there's progress.
It was said on one of the recent Tesla calls that the Model X configuration would come this month. So if they aren't yet updating the web site, may be that will arrive in the form of Tesla calling the initial Model X reservation holders so that vehicle customization can be done.
Jul 26, 2015
bonnie There is an assumption that "Model X configuration in July" means "Design Studio Open". My assumption is that some Founders have already configured this month, making it true that Model X configuration would begin in July. Because it has.
just my two cents.

AnOutsider While this is true, my issue with this is that the comment was made to the general public, whom all don't have knowledge of the founders group etc. Additionally, if that were the intent, then there should have been a qualifier like "we expect founders to begin configuring..."
It all leads me to believe he really thought we'd be at the point where the general public would have been starting the config process (even if it's just over the phone), but in the end, that timeline was too optimistic.

AlMc I am just happy to hear that someone is configuring...progress....slow....but progress:wink:
Jul 26, 2015
Svenssons The comment was made during the shareholders meeting and my guess is that most founders are shareholders... I have always had the assumption that the first cars will go to the Founders edition in late September and Tesla will need the orders for those cars 2 months before delivery. Signatures in USA will start to get deliveries in October and I hope other markets will start to get Signature deliveries in December. I have not seen any more delays in the comments from Tesla Motors or Elon Musk since after the delay in 2014.
I do hope that I can order my Model X as early as possible, preferably this month, even if I have to wait 6 months for the delivery.
Jul 26, 2015
bonnie I think you're being unfair. This was at the Shareholder's meeting and the context was that the first Model X would be configured in July. My reaction was he meant to let us know how close production was. (Most of the Founders were probably sitting right in front of him.)
It never crossed my mind during the meeting that he was implying the design studio would be open. THIS forum got everyone revved up about that interpretation of his words & now people are going to be disappointed.
(And to be clear, I expect I'll be configuring in a conversation, not using an online tool.)
If he'd meant the design studio would be open, he would have said that.

Why 2 months? There is no backlog of manufacturing the X. There is a big line of X orders, but they can start building X's the day they open the design studio. Supposedly the new line at the factory can do both X and S on it at once. So really they can start building them the moment someone finalizes their order. The order of X vin numbers does not correlate exactly to the order they roll off the line.
I said before the first X's off the line will be inventory vehicles. Probably a weeks worth of production, 500 or so to spread out to stores and for test drives. Then the big "unveil" and the founders series will start rolling off the line. Those first 500 inventory cars will probably also be considered a full blown production test to iron out any remaining issues from the manufacturing process.
Edit: This makes me wonder if getting an inventory X will be as easy as it is getting a inventory S. Jump to the front of the line and get your X months before people who pre-ordered in 2013-14?
Jul 26, 2015
Svenssons The first production cars for the Founders Edition will take much longer time to build than the time it takes for Model S to be build today. Add to this a much more detailed testing and inspection for the first cars. Many Founders Edition might be built more than one time because of problems detected in the tests and inspections.
Jul 26, 2015
bonnie i doubt we'll see any inventory cars in stores until early 2016, after the first 5000 or so have been delivered. Before that, I'm sure most reservation holders will get a test drive at a drive event, just like with the Model S.

Jul 26, 2015
Fiver Well, Elon said they were trying to ramp incredibly fast once production finally does commence (whenever that is). This is part of why he claims development is taking so long. So IF this is true, I don't see why they can't ramp from 500 cars week one to 2,000 week two as they claim is possible. While building a car is no easy task, Tesla as a whole isn't nearly as green to this process as they were when starting production of the S. And I still don't believe it will take them 2 months to figure out how to build those first few founders cars. If they are taking a cautious approach before production as it seems they are, and if everything works, they should be producing full speed within week(s) of starting up X production. A well built machine can run at top speed when it's first turned on as long as it's designed well during it's engineering phase.
**I also acknowledge this line of thinking flies in the face of my previous comments saying only a handful of cars will be released in calendar year 2015.

MaxK The statement from Elon about the X configuring in July was made in the May earnings call. The questions from Jeffrey K. Evanson - Vice President-Investor Relations was:
"Elon, do you want to talk about Model X? We've had a number of questions from investors and Ben's question here about when you'll be able to configure Model X online, when we'll show that to the public, how that will actually deploy?"
Elon replied:
"Yes. Probably three months from now, (1:14:44) May, so it's like this is early July is when we'll ask people to do the configuration. And it would be very similar to the S, like it's not going to be super there's no big surprises there. It's very similar to the S. And, yes, and we certainly have a lot of customers who've been waiting a long time. So they will probably (1:15:13)."
The question was specific to online configurations and covered investors in a general sense. The reply specifically mentioned customers. Neither the question, nor the answer, limited the configurator in July to founders. To the contrary, the question and answer combined to indicate that customers and investors could be configuring online in early July.
In Elon time, we are still in early July, so I expect the design studio to open very soon.

Jul 27, 2015
Fiver Also it should be noted the inclusion of the word probably. That one word means they are shooting for July, but it could be any time really. So if the configuration tool isn't up in July, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm hopeful it will be up by the next earnings call in early August, but then again, it's Tesla time. Hopefully if it's not up by the call, they will have some information about the timeline to release then. Otherwise it's going to be awkward if once again they have to deflect with the common "We'll release it when it's right" response yet again.

ronmerkord Twiddler, thanks for the attempt to return to the OP and sanity.
As far as the video in the Tesla store, the X was only for about 30 seconds of a 5 minute video loop. It showed a shot of the Model X next to a Model S, a few standard shots of a black X and a titanium X, and a shot of the open rear showing rear seats folded down, I believe. I wish that I could have gotten a photo of it. Mainly, I was impressed that the stores are now actively promoting the X, as we visit one of various stores in our area at least once a month. This was the first time that we have seen any indiction of the Model X.
Has anyone else seen this video in their local Tesla store?
Jul 27, 2015
Merrill You would not think they would show something on a video at the showrooms that was from 2012 or 2013. Wonder what X they used, can you see it very well or is it so fast it was hard to make out.

Merrill,
The images were pretty clear. If I had had my iPhone ready, I could have captured the images. I wonder if this is showing in all the stores now (this was the Topanga Mall store in northern Los Angeles area).

gregincal When I first drove a Model S test drive car without an appointment at a Tesla store (it was a new car, fresh off the line), less than 200 Model S cars had been delivered to the public (end of September 2012). I believe it will be the same for the Model X.
Jul 27, 2015
timf That sounds exactly like their standard stock footage of the Model X they have been showing since 2012. I have a hard time believing it is anything more than that.
Jul 27, 2015
NigelM Different environment back then. Back in 2012 Tesla stores literally had no cars to show people, and the company badly needed to generate and establish demand for the product. This time around the stores all have Model S to show & tell and offer test drives, plus there's a much longer waiting list for Model X and they don't want to completely cannibalize Model S.
I tend to agree with Bonnie that inventory cars won't get in-store for a few months after launch; I do expect that Tesla will set up a Model X test drive tour for reservation holders.
Jul 27, 2015
Paul Carter I've received an email a year ago that the Model X would be put into the loaner fleet, be in stores for display and test drives before deliveries. I guess they are technically inventory cars, but perhaps not going to be available for sale right away. Until they get through the backlog or changes start coming in, they'll be valuable in generating new sales and converting existing reservations into sales (early adopters aside). I don't think its likely to cannibalize the Model S sales much because its really going to be targeted at a different market of owners. Not saying that there won't be some.
I just think they'll need to give people test rides (especially for those who have reservations and are needing the touch and feel to make the final purchase decision and get those confirmed up). So keep an open mind that they might very well have that planned all along. Personally, I don't think I would have bought the Model S sight unseen. But boy, once you've taken one out... well you know the rest you're in love with it.
And I feel like rambling today.... so bare with me...
The Model S has proven itself to me to have plenty of space for passengers and cargo, but I do prefer higher ride height, easier to get in and out of, additional carrying capacity, and having the ability to carry 6 adults with me when the need arises. I usually end up renting an SUV or truck to make up for that before I got the Model S. But why didn't I already own a SUV. Well, I just couldn't bring myself to own one for just those occasions and drive around a gas guzzler in the meantime and feel guilty about the waste it would be. Since I've gotten an S, I haven't had the need for the extra 6th spot yet and managed to carry an amazing amount of stuff in the S in the meantime. With the dual motor announcement and that insane experience I sorta wavered even! However, the Model X is the vehicle I've always wanted. As long as it can live up to that, which I have every hope that it will (and then some), I would now even buy it sight unseen.
Exciting memory for me is that on February 9th, 2012 a coworker told me about the Tesla Model X SUV starting reservations the next day. I knew a little bit about Tesla back then (saw a Roadster review on a TV car show and one around town). I thought it was a crazy business model to get here, but wow, they now have a sedan ready to go and thinking about the next one. Boy, I jumped in with both feet and got a signature reservation and was hitting the reserve page like crazy the next day. Woo hoo! Its just around the corner now...

Jul 27, 2015
vandacca I'm mostly siding with Paul Carter. I agree that they won't have Model-X during the founder series cars, but shortly after the Signature Series start rolling, I think they will have demo vehicles. Tesla has often said that the Model-X is mostly geared towards women, and its been my experience (forgive me for generalizing) that most women would not finalize a purchase without seeing the Model-X.
I'll donate to Paul's wager via PayPal (appropriate considering Elon's past connection with it).
Jul 27, 2015
bonnie Forgive ME for generalizing, but it's been my experience on this forum that most men would not finalize a purchase without seeing the X first.
But I still believe that the early Sigs will not get even a test drive before finalizing, the majority of the Sigs will get a test drive event, and cars will hit the stores for display in early 2016. Men and their wishiwashiness be damned.

Jul 27, 2015
CmdrThor I think you are taking Elon's comments about women and the Model X out of context. Elon admitted that the Model S was rather masculine in its design. He mentioned that they considered women much more in designing the Model X. Does this mean the Model X is "geared towards women"? No it means it is geared towards everyone.
And I agree with Bonnie, I think most people in general would not finalize a purchase without seeing the X first. The exception is the people who plopped down 40 grand three years ago. If they haven't cancelled yet .. pretty much aren't going to cancel now ...
Jul 27, 2015

Jul 28, 2015
vandacca And this is why we need more members like Bonnie on this forum!
But am I missing something? It is beginning to sound like we are all beginning to agree on the same thing.
Maybe the disagreement is actually with the dates that the Signature Models will be released, but it sounds like everybody agrees that most Signature holders will have the option to see/test-drive a Model-X before finalizing.
Being a male Model-X reservation holder, I agree with you CmdrThor. However, Tesla went to great lengths to "include" women in the Model-X. They had quotes during the reveal and on the website like "...carry 7 passengers and all her luggage...". Also, the website only had a single image of a person and it was a female using the falcon doors. Maybe its Tesla's hope that if they over-emphasize the female perspective, they can be more inclusive and friendly towards women in general.
Anyway, I don't mean to further generalize some more, but a lot of men also would need to see/test-drive the Model-X before finalizing, but percentage-wise, more men than women feel comfortable buying a vehicle on specs alone and sight unseen. While I've seen a lot of F150s on the road and in show-rooms, I bought my F150 based on specs over the phone. When I picked it up, I was a wee bit shocked how big it looked due to my decisions (e.g. extended bed, off-road suspension, bigger wheels, etc.).
