Hey everyone, I saw the thread earlier this week that you found a link to the design studio, but then it disappeared...

Anyways I tried a direct link: Model S | Tesla Motors and it worked.

    So much fun!

    Enjoy!

    - pearl white

    Roof :

haha, I too had been watching the URL. Saw it on my iPad, gone by the time I got to my computer! Guess they want to leave a reason to come :)

Hmmmm...doesn't work for me. I tried FF7 and Chrome14. Also their page doesn't load well in either sometimes. The menu bar gets all funky and instead of drop downs it lists them all on the left column.

As it is still working for me, I'll take multipe screenshots and upload them for you in my first post :)

    Sweet, appreciate it.

*edit* while you're in there, can you screengrab the differences in the black vs body color roofs?

Not here. In fact, the whole "mytesla" section of the site displays broken as if the CSS files are gone

I really hope there will be other colors too, but I have to admit that I like brown while I was sure I would go for blue....

I also like the brown, it's similar to the color of our Q5, but it's not available on Sig editions. Actually, the white that the non-sig cars get also seems superior to the white the sig gets

Is there really any sig owner that isn't going to get that red!?

I like the brown also. It's unfortunate the sig won't come in brown.

Although Anza Brown looks good, beware, you might tire of it very quickly (like my wife and I did in the past with the 'Barrique Red' - really brown - on a BMW 3 and 'Hot Chocolate Brown' on a Mini Clubman).

Looking beyond the usual black/white/silver/gray/blues on the non-sigs, I might go for the Sequoia Green - will stand out and make a 'Green' statement too!

I'd assume you could order your Signature car in any color. I do like the red though.

I was told that there would be four signature colors, signature red, black, grey, and white. I posted that here but Tesla asked me to remove the message because "the decision is not final". I see nothing has changed, though.

Here are the full color names (as seen on your screen captures):

    • Catalina White
    • San Simeon Silver
    • Tiburon Grey
    • Monterey Blue
    • Sequoia Green

The design studio worked if I logged into my account at Tesla's web site, without logging in it's been hit or miss on getting the design studio to show up on the link provided. Reservation holders having trouble accessing the design studio and can't wait until tomorrow, try logging into your account to access the design studio for the Model S.

I quite like the blue, but when I showed the palette of available colors to my wife she was even more disappointed than I was ("what, no lightning green?"). Perhaps plain white will be our last resort, though in any discussion of car color there was tremendous agreement that white, black, and silver/gray are way to dull.

Could anybody explain why one would choose the black roof option? (unless the car is black of course)
  • Oct 1, 2011
    Cobos
Yeah I really like red as a colour. My wife adores purple, and currently our ICE car now is a pretty good burgundy kind of red. I can understand they want to keep special red colours for the Signature series, but I'd really like something reddish for the non-signature as well... Maybe for the European release they will get more colours, they should have expanded the production line then anyway.

What do people think about the black roof option? The Mini Cooper does this sort of thing. I hope the have one that I can see as I do like to be noticed as long as it is not ugly.

It looks awesome. I was originally going to go with a black car, but after seeing the pearl white with a black top, I'm in love..
  • Oct 1, 2011
    gg_got_a_tesla
Yes, we have a silver roof on our Mini which is brown otherwise and it does stand out (much like an 'accent wall' in a large room) but, IMHO, only a car the size of the Mini can pull it off. In a car the size of the Model S, it might look tacky and seemingly there just for the sake of it...
  • Oct 1, 2011
    William13
Gg that is my concern. I hope I can see a two tone in person before I put in the final order.

The black and white might work but I am not as sure with the red and black.
  • Oct 1, 2011
    AnOutsider
I disagree. Many bmws have that as an option (even carbon fiber). Looks great with a white car. We plan to go for the panorama roof though, which will look black enough.
  • Oct 1, 2011
    dsm363
Personal preference I guess. I agree the white with black roof looks great. The red with the black roof looks good to me too. It almost likes like a solar panel even though it isn't. The panoramic roof is nice too but not sure if I'll get that.

The roadster has less volume but much more colors to choose from. Perhaps this is only the initial offering but I was gunning for the blue/grey color that you can see on the brochure you can get at the dealer.

I think it might have more to do with the difficulty of getting paint to bind properly to aluminum. I don't really know anything about it, but I remember Elon saying on a conference call that aluminum is a tricky substance to paint properly. They might not have had enough time to engineer all the colors under the sun, and just picked the ones that are most popular in luxury cars (the blacks, whites, and silvers) to start with.

We might get more colors, but I doubt it would be before launch.
  • Oct 1, 2011
    dmckinstry
I would take the blue as my first choice, but all the "real" colors seemed quite dark. I'll want to see samples in the store on metal before making a final decision.
  • Oct 1, 2011
    doug
The Roadster colors (at least initially) were just renamed Lotus colors, and Lotus did the painting. Tesla might need some more time and higher volume for it to make sense to offer more colors in their paint shop.

So far the only thing that's different in the "build a Sig" vs. "normal build" is the color red. I suppose that'll change when the other items are configurable. I'm still hoping the Sig has some overall price break for a mostly decked out car, otherwise I'll have to drop from Sig to a normal reservation. And hopefully some options could be dropped regardless. For instance, I really don't care about having the car be a mobile wireless hotspot and I don't want to pay for a month 3G/4G connection I'll almost never use.
  • Oct 1, 2011
    Mycroft
Somewhere else on the website they mentioned that the Signature edition will include a leather interior. So that's something besides the color. I'm sure we'll know more in December/January. I'd be willing to bet that the mobile hotspot thing will be included in every car. The service will probably have 30 days or so "free" and then optionally continue for a fee after that. With all the new streaming services, I'll probably spring for the 3G service myself.

I recall them saying they were going to powdercoat instead of paint. Anyone else have the same recollection? That might also limit their color options. Of course my wife zeroed right in on the Pearl White and panoramic roof. Since so far we're picking all the options, I wonder if I should just get a Sig :p
  • Oct 1, 2011
    VolkerP
If you can afford it, switch to the signature edition. Get two cars in one for the same price!

Edit: Deleting cache in Firefox did restore the design studio to normal behaviour.

    I recently noticed this:
Yahoo! Message Boards - Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) - Tesla Paint
Now, take the above with a huge 'grain of salt' as those financial message boards tend to be chock full of BS most of the time.

Hmm. I was wondering how they were going to do metallics or pearls w/ powdercoating but I'm going to miss the durability.

Water-based paint. I've got a video of one of the machines that I'll get uploaded at some point (it's in the queue). It's primer, paint, clear coat.

Although the design studio only has signature red the event had another lighter red color on a mounted display.

The guy in charge of the paint shop gave a long explanation of why they changed their minds about the powder coating but can't remember exactly what he said. Something about it not meeting their expectations and needing more time to study it. They are using some special process to greatly reduce the VOC (volatile organic compounds?) in the painting process so that it isn't too bad. Maybe someone remembers the exact explinaiton.
  • Oct 2, 2011
    W.Petefish
I think it had something to do with uniform coating.
  • Oct 2, 2011
    gg_got_a_tesla
Yup, that guy spoke way too fast with way too much jargon :) He did mention that, a few minutes prior, one of the paintshop robots somehow cut through one of its "hoses/cables"(?) and Tesla was out $5K (my deposit, heh, heh!) - he said he already fixed the robot's program to reassure us :)

Btw, props to Emily, one of the Tesla employees who apparently worked on the design studio and the website in general. They consciously stayed away from Flash and went with HTML5 - the first major automotive company to do so, it seems. She did mention that omitting Muir Red from non-sig design studio will be remedied soon and was apologetic for the website fluctuations over this busy weekend.

I noticed the choice to pick the outdoor view of the beta in front of a house has been removed from the 5 choices and only the 4 design studio profiles are available for viewing. The outside mirrors on the car used in the outdoor photo where not nearly as slick as what was shown in Fremont or the car in the design studio, perhaps a refresh of the outdoor photo is in the works.
