Key fob cracking on top part 1

  • Jan 30, 2013
    joepruitt
Is anyone else having a problem with the key fob cracking on the center button? The top is cracking around the circular button below it. I've had the car for 3 months now and wouldn't think the fob would have problems so soon. I called customer experience and they said that the service center could take care of it. I plan on calling them today but wanted to see if anyone else seeing this?

In Revenge of the Electric Car there is a scene where Elon's Roadster fob falls apart. I think you are the first for a Model S fob.

I guess since I've relied on the locks to work automagically and have pressed the button maybe seven times in six weeks, I hope it won't happen to me...

Not cracking yet, but I can see the outline of the button below on mine.

It is funny this came up, as I was thinking the other day just how worn my keyfob was starting to look after just 2 months. It took years to get that much wear on my old Acura fob.

I can see that the buttons are showing and my fingernail catches on the edge where the buttons showing. I suspect it will crack soon based on your report. Something else for the list when I go in next time.

Me too. I got my car in late September and started noticing the buttons eating through the plastic covering (creating the ring you described) by late December. I passed a picture of it along to ownership so that can look into in and hopefully improve future ones. They might replace the one I have too although it still works fine.

No doubt this is a quality control issue with the key fob supplier. Or does Tesla make its own? In any case I'm sure Tesla will address this issue.

Speaking of the fob, wasn't there talk at some point of the key fob matching the exterior color of the car? Or did I dream that?

Maybe they can change suppliers and pick one that is capable of doing multi colors.

Anyone know if Tesla makes there own fobs? Or if they have a supplier for them? Seems to be a common problem on all the early Sig cars which will lead to every car with enough time.

    My recollection is...

    1. Color-matched keyfob was a "forum hope" that maybe became a rumor, rather than something Tesla suggested or promised.
    2. Color-matched HPWC was something publicly stated by Tesla that was later changed to "silver for all" initially through "just pictures" and later officially confirmed at one of the stores.

Well... kinda depends on the usage of the fob. My wife and I rarely use the buttons so our fobs are looking just fine.

I kind of wish there was a gesture or something that can be done outside the vehicle (with fob in pocket) that acts as a request to immediately lock. With that, I'd never need to pull the fob out of my pocket (since I basically never use the frunk).

BTW, I have had the car since Oct. 30th and have had no issues with the key fob (and I just got 4.2 last week, so have been using it frequently to lock and unlock the doors). No scratches, no visibility of the buttons etc. So it's probably dependent on usage to some extent.

On our Toyota iQ there is a small area on the handle, maybe half a square inch, just swipe your finger gently over it and it locks the doors.

Maybe the Tesla should have a similar area on the front side of the front handles. Short swipe, lock.
Walk away. Still lock some seconds later.

Given the wear-and-tear on the fob, perhaps we find someone to do vinyl wraps? (only half-joking)

    - - - Updated - - -

Given that the handles have a pressure gauge (to open them), could a gentle inward push on an open handle send a message to retract the handle and lock the car?

I noticed the circle outline of the top button last week and today when I went to press the top button, I noticed that the whole plastic circle came off showing the button underneath. I assume they would replace this so I will just take it in next time. It does look kind of cool though so maybe I will keep it.

Look very closely at the vinyl and you can actually see all three button outlines, similar to the center one shown above.

They will replace it. Make sure you bring both keys with you as they need to reprogram both your new key and the non-broken second key.

I'd like to see this too. I don't have the tech package, so having to fish the fob out of my pocket and watch to make sure the lock command is received (sometimes it isn't) gets a bit annoying. That and the wear on the fob is showing much sooner than I anticipated (<2 months).

Not a pressure gauge. It uses a simple microswitch. I don't believe the microswitch is mechanically connected to the handle when it is extended.

My battery door fell off and got lost after 3 days. Reportred it to thye store and area service manager and was told that I had to BUY a new forb for $250. This made me quite unhappy and I let TM know how unhappy is was. Supposedly I am going to get a new battery door (MSRP $.03?) when the ranger comes to fix some other things. I guess time will tell, but it is really embarrasing for me to show off my new Tesla and it's fob with gaffer's tape on the doorpost AND the keyfob!

Yep, my the trunk of my Tesla just fell off the other day. In my pocket. Oh yes, the Fob, not the car... Service had not seen his before here in the East.

Looks like a design flaw. Great concept, but the material needs to be both flexible and strong. Mine hasn't broken, but the little circles on the plastic have appeared. Going forward, this issue looks like real problem for Tesla.

i don't have the tech package so my fob gets a bit more wear. Tesla might be able to minimize fob wear for non-tech owners by enabling the auto-presenting door handles, but that really wouldn't "solve" the problem (and would likely piss off the owners who paid for the tech package).

If you look at the key fob that piece can be replaced easily. Just request more than 1 so you will have for the future.

mine is cracking too, and i was told this was common problem.. so they will not be replacing the key fobs ( as they will simply crack again ) - but instead are working on a new material that will no longer crack and then replace at that time - at least this is what i was told.
  • Apr 9, 2013
    jvonbokel
This is more like what I would expect. I wonder why it took so long for them to discover this issue?

Same here (non-tech). It seems a bit silly to me that they charge for this feature. I know that the car sees the fob, because I can touch the handle to bring it out as long as the fob is in range of the car. If it would placate Tech Package buyers, I'd probably be willing to pay a small upgrade fee to enable the feature. Not 1/10th the cost of the Tech Package (assuming equal pricing for each of the 10 features). More like 1/40th to 1/80th. :)

The plastic on my key came totally off and Tesla replaced it with no problem. Make sure you bring both keys with you. I wanted to keep the broken key since it makes for a cool toy but they had to send it back to HQ. Here is the pic.

Yeah, when my S was delivered in October one of the keys had a crack all the way across it. When they replaced it they insisted on keeping the cracked key. I was a little annoyed that they would insist on sending the thing back to get tossed or dropped in a parts bin rather than letting me keep it as a spare, since it worked just fine.
  • Apr 11, 2013
    dsm363
Wouldn't you rather they check the key out and figure out how to make a better one since they replaced the key for free? You had the option of keeping the old one instead of getting a new one since it worked fine.

I would like if they changed the fob to die cast metal. Would be heavier but would also would feel more substantial. They could just have recessed areas for the buttons. It would scratch but, then, so does the plastic.

I'd prefer a standard shaped and more robust fob. My BMW fobs have survived years of constant use and they appear almost new.

I'd like the same material as my Nissan Altima key fob. Its a high-impact plastic with sort of a textured finish that doesn't show scratches or swirls. Still looks new after 5 years.

    Just to pile on...

The circles have appeared on my fob after nearly zero use over 5 months of ownership - handles auto-present and walk-away lock. I will have it addressed at my next service (Saturday).

OK, I admit it... has anyone recovered their Model S fob after a ride in the washing machine? One of ours took that trip it is now disassembled and in a plastic bag with some silica dryer packets. We headed for S Cal tomorrow so will leave it alone for five days of drying out. Hope it acts sober when we get home.

It looks like a sturdy metallic key. While I like that my S fob is light weight, I also think I'd prefer a little heft for the metallic strength. Not having the Panamera fob in hand, I'm guessing a little based on my visual impression.

yup, another owner "piling on". I try to only use one key (keeping the other as a spare) and yesterday noticed the cracked top on the key I regularly use. Clearly Tesla will need to address this with either a new "sleeve" (replace the guts) or else they could do an "iPhone antenna gate" and send us all free cases

Just noticed this on my wife's fob, which by all accounts has been lost somewhere in her purse for months. We pulled it out this weekend as I left mine at home and the top is basically cracking in a perfect circle. It has been is a small zippered part of her purse mostly, so I'm pretty surprised that this is happening.

Strangely, mine, which gets abused and used regularly, is not cracking at all.

Mine had a faint crack visible in it when it was basically brand new. So far, the top is still attached.

I would happily trade it for a Panamera-style fob with visible buttons, but perhaps they'll be able to figure out how to keep the concealed look and make it more durable.

I don't know if anybody is following this thread. We received our brown "otter" just before Christmas, 2012. A month or so ago I noticed the top starting to crack, then the trunk end. Now both tops have fallen off. I retrieved one from the ground, another from my pants pocket. Wonder if this lets moisture in, does anything else? TeslaFob.jpg

Since the model s is well over $80K you would expect them to use a material like tungsten for the outter shell of key fob, tungsten doesn't scratch very easily since its so hard.
Also for the buttons they should get mechanical switches rated for 50-60 million clicks (like mechanical gaming keyboards), the circuit board should be shock mounted and water proofed, the case should also be waterproofed/sealed.

its not a cheap car, it shouldn't have a cheap fob.

Maybe you should buy a different car, or go make one yourself.

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. I actually agree that the fob should be improved, and I fully expect it will be... just probably not up to your standards. In the mean time, the service center will gladly replace any worn fobs free of charge.

I'm in for service now and the manager said Tesla would replace my fobs. I asked if the new one is any different... and he said not to his knowledge. So I decided to stick with my pop-top-fob until they have a final solution. Nice to hear him offer to replace it however :)

My 2nd replacement was done a few months ago, and I haven't seen any cracking since then. I also started using the new fob protector that they gave me at the same time, so technically it could be related to that, but I'm pretty sure it's an improved fob design/manufacturing.

I've had mine since July and it still looks pristine (picture attached). Here's what I've done (and not done):
    1. Soft plastic decor piece attached by small zip tie. All plastic. Nothing that can scratch. Adds a little bulk so I am always aware of where it is.
    2. Nothing else attached - keys especially. I keep the fob separate from the keys.
    3. I make sure there is nothing else in the pocket the fob goes into - keys, coins or whatever. A handkerchief at the most.
    4. I do make use of the buttons, especially the top/middle since I am paranoid about it taking so long to auto-lock. Still no marks or signs of impending breakdown.
    5. Or maybe I'm just lucky.

or just let it crack. the covers to two of my buttons peeled off months ago--despite the fact that i've pressed those buttons maybe a total of 20 times each in two years--however, the function of the fob and buttons is not impacted at all. now it just looks like the fob, but you can see two buttons with small orange o-rings (or whatever) around them. doesn't bother me at all really. all that thing does is sit in my pocket all day long. that said, next time i'm in for service i will see about replacing it. fwiw.

.. and now that i'm looking at a picture of it, it definitely does not look as good as a new, un-cracked one, lol. will def. be replacing, if only for when other people see it.

Ugh, this just happened to me. Sure it sits in my pocket but I do take it out periodically (every night for example) and I also show it to people when demo'ing the car.

I looked through the threads but other than taking it to Tesla and bothering them has anyone managed to stick the little buttons back on?

I got a free fob holder from Tesla but they add bulk and dont slide into my pocket as well. I just want to put it back together.

FWIW, TM Service has a fob 'refurb' kit with all of the 4 black plastic pieces that they use to rebuild the fob, keeping the PC board as appropriate. They can do the fix for you, or if you are far away, they might mail you a kit. Be sure to ask for detailed instructions. It is not intuitively obvious how to disassemble the covers (...unsnap the long side pieces--the front/rear quarter panel-door constructs--then the top--the battery compartment door is separate). Also, using a small flat screwdriver to pop off the parts is a bit destructive, so you don't want to do this until you have the refurb kit. I've done this myself as I was repeatedly breaking the key ring loop with a too stiff metal snap ring. Did not want to make the drive to the service center or bug the techs, so asked them to send me a kit.

Both of my fobs are on the verge on losing the covers and are pretty scratched up. I was waiting till one of the covers pops off, but maybe I'll toss them my fobs when my car goes in for service next. Should be a simple procedure I imagine.
