Elon Musk does "Ask Me Anything (AMA)" session on Reddit part 1

  • Jan 4, 2015
    32no
Elon Musk is scheduled to have an AMA session on Reddit tomorrow at 9 PM.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with Reddit, an AMA is a popular "ask me anything" thread on Reddit where people ask questions to famous or interesting people. All of the AMAs are supposedly confirmed by moderators, so this is probably not a hoax. I think some of us investors and owners have some various questions that are yet to be answered and since this is Elon Musk, he is probably the most capable to answer our questions. We can discuss possible questions and the answers he provides in this thread.

The AMA will take place at 9 PM Eastern on January 5, 2015

Thanks for posting this, 32no! I do not have account on reddit, would you ask the following question for me:

  • Jan 4, 2015
    Lump
I PM'd DaveT, hopefully he can participate & ask some questions, having attended the shareholders meeting & listening to ridiculous questions about Tesla garments & the super genius guy that wanted Elon's job it would be a shame to miss another opportunity to get important info.

    32no
Here are the questions I would LOVE to get answered:

    1. (vgrinshpun's question) Assuming that external market conditions are not prohibitive, what automobile market strategy would you prefer Tesla Motors to follow:

    A. Mass market auto manufacturer (Toyota).
    B. Premium auto manufacturer (BMW), developer and manufacturer of electric drivetrains for other automobile companies.
    C. Premium auto manufacturer (BMW), developer of electric drivetrains, licensing this technology to other auto manufacturers.

    2. What operating margin does Tesla aim for in the 2020 time frame, when Tesla will be producing 500,000 vehicles/year?

    3. When does Tesla plan on becoming free cash flow positive?

    4. While the Gigafactory is supposed to cut battery costs by 30% before the Model 3 is released, how much further will Tesla cut battery costs by 2020?

    5. How significant is Tesla's technology in the battery cell and pack? (Some believe that Tesla just spot welds Panasonic 18650 cells and wraps it into a pack, which means that any other company can partner with Panasonic and make similar batteries)

    6. Do you still work 100 hours a week with a 60/40 split between Tesla and SpaceX respectively, or has your schedule changed?

    7. When will you do a blog that addresses well-to-wheels carbon emissions of electric vehicles vs gasoline vehicles and maybe hydrogen vehicles as well?

Are the answers posted so that they are accessible later?

Would be interesting to go through them one by one.

Yes. It will be similar a TMC thread. There will be an original post from Elon Musk, and then a bunch of comments that are displayed based on how many more "upvotes" minus "downvotes" each comment has. Then the whole thread will be up for reference.

It will be interesting but I'm sure he won't answer TSLA investment related questions in any more detail than he has before in quarterly calls or shareholder meetings.

He attends as Elon Musk and everything that goes with, not just as the CEO of Tesla Motors Inc.

I hope no one asks him what he thinks about TSLA

I would like to ask the following question:

Could you provide some color on the intellectual property of SpaceX, Tesla Motors, and SolarCity and how that IP is shared and not shared?
  • Jan 4, 2015
    RobStark
But Elon isn't asked all the Right questions on quarterly calls and shareholder meetings.

He could totally answer "Where do you see Tesla Motors in 20 years.... As a mass market Toyota Motors or Volkswagen with premium lines within the portfolio or an exclusive premium market automaker like BMW or Mercedes Benz?"

Or in 20 years, what percentage of revenue do you foresee being automotive related vs energy storage related?

Someone needs to ask/inform him about insurance rate sharp increases due to absurdly high repair costs and Tesla's refusal to sell parts to third parties and whether or not they plan on doing anything about it. I'd also like to know when they plan on showing a prototype for Model 3 and how exactly they plan on keeping the costs down at $35k when some research reports say that the gigafactory will only reduce the cost of batteries by about $3k per car. Also how they plan on keeping service center repair costs down for out of warranty vehicles (like how to broken center console without forking out $6k).
  • Jan 4, 2015
    RobStark
That is something he would not answer exactly only in general terms.

Exactly would be not only Tesla but Panasonic proprietary information.

Repairs, parts, salvage vehicles I would like the question too but he will say that safety is more important than cost.

I too lack a Reddit account. If anyone wants to ask on my behalf, I'd love to know:

-How much do you anticipate a fully-maxed-out Model 3 will cost?

-Will AWD be offered on Model 3 from the beginning?

Just a heads up, reddit accounts are incredibly easy to create. It takes seconds. You don't even need an email address. Furthermore, creating one just for this AMA wouldn't be considered bad form; people create accounts called throwaways all the time.

    I hope so.

As I stated before, this was/is so important to us that I had the "Empress" ask Elon at TESLIVE during Q & A session. IMO, the possibility (now more than ever with the introduction if the P85D) of some unsuspecting 3rd party/valet of incurring property damage, personal injury or even death is far too great to ignore from a safety/$TSLA perspective.
  • Jan 4, 2015

Why would Tesla be in a quiet period? Auto Show and Press conference in 10 days, Space X launch Tuesday, and earnings aren't expected to be reported until February.

You shouldn't bunch up questions. They should be short and quick to reply. He's going to get bombarded between the divorce, Tesla, Solar city, spacex, hyperloop, etc. There's going to be a handful.
  • Jan 4, 2015
    GreenT
My number 1 question is - how is he balancing his 4 companies, kids, ex-wives; etc. ? I am NOT being nosey, but there aren't enough hours in a week to spend quality time on all 11.

Did I add that up right?

SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity, Hyper???, wife 1 (visitation), wife 2 (even probably Talulah doesn't count for visitation as they're not her biological kids); and 5 kids.
  • Jan 4, 2015
    RobStark
Elon is not involved with Hyperloop. He gave it to the world. He said if no one else starts a project within five years he may start a new company.

He said his time spent on SolarCity is showing up to the board meetings to hear the good news. His cousin runs that company.

He has said he spends about 2/3 of his work hours on SpaceX and 1/3 Tesla depending on the interview. Sometimes he adjust those numbers but spends more time on SpaceX. With JB getting more face time with the press looks like he is being groomed for CEO. Elon has said he will remain Chairman and still be involved in the day to day runnings of the company with a title like Chief Product Architect.

He does not need to spend time with Justine Musk(yes, she kept the name after the divorce). I am sure his personal assistant can coordinate schedules for time spent with the kids. Most kids of very powerful people don't have many fond memories of their parent taking them to soccer practice and watching them at the school play. There are usually other perks to go with the downsides. Elon has recently recanted on bequeathing all his money/shares to charity. He has said the Ford family has had good stabilizing influence that prevented bankruptcy of Ford Motor Co. relative to what happened at GM.
  • Jan 4, 2015
    GreenT
What I am getting at is ... spending time with 5 kids cannot be delegated.

And somewhere in all that, Justine figures in. Coordinating time. etc.

A recent article (no idea where) strongly suggested Musk is involved to some degree with the Hyperloop company.

And .. if I were him and needing a new "companion", I'd be calling one of the reporters / interviewers who couldn't get her questions straight she was so infatuated. Brunette from a year or so ago.

    Just sayin' :)

Regarding cash flow positive it was previously stated that Q3 would be that point. This was before they said they were pushing back the Model X so if not Q3 then should be shortly after as Model X ramps up.

Three questions I'd like to be asked:

1)will Tesla bring any new information or product to the North American Auto Show?

2)would it make sense to give every Tesla vehicle it's own unique SMS address at some point so that owners could text all kinds of commands to the autonomous cars they own? (E.g. Come pick me up, drive to Johns house to pick up package and come home, alert me when charge is up to 150 miles of range, at 8am tomorrow heat to 70 degrees and be 100% charged)

3)if you were in the shoes of a TSLA investor who is constantly hearing FUD from the media, what 1 or 2 questions would they get the most valuable information out of asking you right now? And can you answer that question?
  • Jan 4, 2015
    vgrinshpun
I think that statement you refer to was about cash flow positive, not free cash flow positive. Free cash flow positive includes capex, while cash flow positive excludes it. It is my understanding that 32no's question is about free cash flow, not cash flow. With the further factory upgrades and expenses for GF ramping up, it is unlikely that TM will reach free cash flow positive status for some time...

Tesla related, I'd want to know,

could you describe the challenges, potential, and probability of implementing each of these possible improvements to the long distance trip capability of Tesla's vehicles: 10 minute SuperCharging, battery swap, addition of a metal air range extender, or "other" card that's not been shown yet.

of course, I wouldn't want him to say anything he thought it was not in shareholder interest to disclose. that said, I think a major advancement in any of these would be a tremendous lever in removing many people's last mental barrier to EVs. Tesla would still have the challenge of ramping up production, but I think the kind of enthusiasm for Tesla's and EV's emergence we see here on TMC could very well become mainstream.

    Pretty simple...

    * When will we see Model X ?
    * When will we see Model 3 ?
    * Are you still confident about the 200 mile range and $35,000 starting figure for Model 3 ?
    * Are you still confident about the end-of-2016, beginning-of-2017 launch for Model 3 ?

These are the questions that I find most annoying. Why? Because they get asked ALL the time and the response is always the same and usually just BS as they don't know for sure. Too many various factors. The best answer you'll get is a ballpark estimate which is unreliable hence a total waste of time for everyone. I hate it when these questions are asked during those shareholder calls and interviews.

As an avid Redditor I can shed some light on how the AMA will work and hopefully help everyone get the most out of it.

The "I am Elon Musk, AMA!" post will go live right at 9pm EST. There will immediately be hundreds, perhaps thousands, of questions posted. Users will be voting up/down these questions and the more popular ones will bubble up to the top. Unfortunately a great question that gets posted even a few minutes too late will probably get buried and have a slim chance of getting answered. Elon (or an assistant) will generally wait a little bit and the start answering the top voted questions.

If we as a group can settle on a question(s) to be asked, we can have one person post the question right at 9:00 and then post the link here so others can upvote it. If it's well organized we should be able to get it near the top and improve our odds of having it answered. Also, as aznt1217 said you should not bunch up questions as it lessens your chance of getting answered. Short concise questions work best in this format.

Lastly, prepare for a lot of fluff questions like "How did you decide to start a rocket company?" to be near the top. The majority of the audience will not be Tesla/SpaceX nerds like us so they won't realize what is already public knowledge. I would highly recommend everyone sign in or create an account (it's super easy) and try to upvote the good and downvote the bad questions early on to improve our chances of extracting some new information from this AMA.

My question would be. If there was one thing you feel Tesla Motors should improve on as a company, what would it be and how would you go about improving it?

This would immediately get the FUD Spinners to work but I'm really curious to know what he would say. I won't be on the AMA till later tonight so if someone asks that... that would be awesome.

Not really. The 2-tier dash alters the shape of the car from the A-pillar forward. This was most pronounced in the 8th Generation models, which looked nothing like compacts from other companies.

    aronth5
I find this exciting. Is this the instruction he gave the design team which they are working on. Or have they already created the basic look and he is acknowledging job accomplished! I'm not comparing it at all to BMW's I3 look but as different as the BMW design is I'm expecting the Model 3 to also be controversial but in a good way. Definitely not a scaled down Model S which many are expecting.
  • Jan 5, 2015
    32no
This is mainly because the only Tesla related questions that are towards the top are the one about Model 3 (currently the 4th highest comment), my 4 questions (currently the 23rd highest), and a self driving cars comment (currently the 28th highest comment). Most of the top comments are not Tesla related.
  • Jan 5, 2015
    RobStark
Really. The two tier dash itself looks weird. Everything else about 8th Gen Civic looks cookie cutter.

The interior of the Model S looks unique. No problem there. People know it,accept it and sells well.

But it has a conventional exterior.

Elon telling us it will look like no other car on the road I think he means the exterior will be different. Telling us the interior will look like no other car on the road would be redundant as I think no one expects the Model 3 interior to look conventional.

    - - - Updated - - -

When it comes to mass market vehicles that the OEM is expecting to sell in 350k units plus per year there is no such thing. Controversy means a large and possibly a majority of the buying public don't like it. Which is always bad.

Sometimes on rare occasion, an 86 Ford Taurus or Gen II Prius comes to mind, initial controversy gives way to wide acceptance. That is a risky proposition.

Keep in mind that the design intent behind everything Tesla is to "look cool". And if you look at SpaceX it is the same... To the point where the design intend for Dragon V2 was that it look like a proper almost alien spaceship and the spacesuits (which we haven't seen yet) has a requirement to look "badass".

They have also talked repeatedly about not looking like a golf cart or other crazy designs when referencing previous models. And if you hear the story about their decisions surrounding what body style to go with for the roadster they had everyone vote based on looks.

So. That all being said if it looks terrible then that was be very un-Tesla and un-Elon. I have no doubt that the Model 3 will look just as cool as everyone dreams it should. It can be different and still look cool. Why is it that the 2 seated sports cars are all capable of looking wholly unique and there is no mistaking a Ferrari from a lambo from a porshe to a lotus but when you get into sedans... And then even worse compact sedans they instantly all look just about the same minus like one piece of flair on the car that makes it " stand out" so you know, that's a Honda, and that's a BMW, and that's a Toyota... Why? The distinct feature of a BMW is the front grill. They didn't put thought into the rest of the sedan style... In fact they just make the grill a smaller version of the higher end BMWs... Boring... Why can't you have something that looks cool while not being the same as every other compact sedan out there?
  • Jan 5, 2015
    Auzie
It could be that design constraints push most of the cars into a similar shape. There are not so many ways to put together 4 wheels, body with 2-4 doors and windows, engine (ice) etc and be reasonably aerodynamic.

I realize the S did not break the mold at all. It wasn't supposed to. Part of the design intent of the S was to "blend in" while still having its own flair.

Of all those you mention the only real notes is that the american design is more blocky (sharp edges) while the Asian designs are more smooth. The only one that stands out is the kodo and that type of design is what I would expect from the Model 3 (not that it will look even close to that, since there is no reason for such a large front end... since there is no engine). outside of smooth vs blocky they look the same. The only stand out pieces are the very front ends of the car in the grill design... again, boring... I am not saying any of the cars look bad. They just look... the same...

And coming from someone who didn't used to be a car person... like... at all... the only cars that ever used to have distinction to my non-car mind. Was the flashy fancy sports cars... for the longest time, unless I could see the emblem on the car I couldn't tell the difference between most cars on the road. All Muscle cars looked the same... all sedans looked the same... all trucks... well you get the point. Even today looking at cars on the road I have gotten quite good at spotting the emblems on the car in order to identify what it is. Unless it is a really stand out design. Muscle cars have really separated themselves from each other so I can generally spot a vette over a camaro over a mustang... No confusion there. And same with most 2 seater sports cars. But sedans... They still all look mostly the same. I'm sorry but they do.

If you just sort by highest rated, almost all of the ones that he responded to are going to be at the top. Since that was largely the criteria Elon used, himself, to pick which questions to answer. His tag is also a different color from everyone else so that should also help. You *shouldn't* have to load any additional comments at the bottom to find them all. There might have been one that he answered below the top rated ones. Hope that helps!

And now Toyota is spamming Reddit's front page with their ridiculous "giveaway of useless trash" FCV patents to distract the market. I commented already on these idiotic threads, some of you may wish to as well. We need to debunk the FCV vaporware/myth when we see it, and leave hydrogen in rockets where it belongs.

Only Tesla reference from last night's Reddit AMA was more than a little vague:

Wow, that is clipping both questions and answers. Some of those answers are not completely listed there and you should click through to ensure you read the whole thing. Just so you are aware.

That was my first IAMA and probably my last. Most answers were SpaceX related with the only Tesla answer saying how the Model III will be different. Agreed, too much noise on reddit.

I kept the question vague because I knew very specific questions about Tesla probably wouldn't get answered (see: all other Tesla questions in the AMA). I was thrilled to get an answer but it just raises more questions :)

Don't hate the program... it was stated upfront (via twitter) that his intentions were to not focus on Tesla related things... or rather that he was more interested in discussing SpaceX stuff.

I take that as two fold: Tesla and SolarCity are both public companies and there are likely unique hurdles with that. Second that the launch that was supposed to happen today is a big deal for SpaceX and that is where his mind is right now.

Maybe in the future he will do one that is more Tesla focused. Most people respected his wishes on sticking to SpaceX which is likely why none of the Tesla stuff bubbled very high to the surface. He actually did a similar thing in the past on Jalopnik and it was, if I am not mistaken, almost all Tesla focused... because, well, that IS a car blogging site.

So please don't let that spoil you from AMA or Reddit in general. There are good things posted over there.

I was about to point out the same thing. This AMA was mainly SpaceX which is why he avoided Tesla questions. If he does a Tesla AMA, I'm sure it'll be what he was looking for.

I think you already have seen some of his influence with the improved handling of the P85D which has gotten great feedback from owners.
