Is it ugly? (Poll) part 1

  • Mar 31, 2016

I can't figure out if this car is ugly or not. Some photos make it look great. Some make it look like a station wagon with a weird front end. Your thoughts?

    Much better than the X

I think it looks awesome for this stage in design. It will evolve. It will improve. It's still missing a lot of little details that will make the design "whole".

Take a look at some of the alpha--> beta Model S's. They looked much less refined than the final version. They'll continue to tweak and improve.

I thought the X had a strange looking front end. The front end of the 3 looks like the ugliest Porsche ever. Every other angle of the car looks great, that front end though...yuck.

I'm starting to think they showed more than one prototype. Of the three car they had, the one in the middle looked ugly, but the one on the far left and the red one looked awesome. I'm not sure if it's the color, angle or are the car actually different; the front of the car keeps looking shorter or longer in every different picture.

I'm going with amazing, because it is amazing.

That said, the nose is better than the S & X, but still not quite right. Easily fixable though. IF they lower the pug a bit, and have the upper snout line match the side lines.

I'm speculating here, but I'm assuming they didn't do this due to drag reasons.

    Everything else works for me.
Gotta love that matt silver. Reminds me of that car from that time travel movie.

I actually love the Roadster/Porche-esq front end.

I was not sure of the Model X design when it was revealed last year, but I am 100% sure of the Model 3 design.

For a base of $35,000 I could not have asked for more! Is it perfect? No. But it is 10x better than it could have been! Love the front end, not a huge fan of the interior display but completely understand it. Super impressed with the vehicle, the event, the reservation process in store today (and online). This is the beginning of the global change. Super proud to be a South African today (my closest connection to Elon)!

Awesome front end, looks like a mini Panamera. Think about that for a second...the bolt, i3 and Leaf are supposed to compete?
  • Mar 31, 2016

I was wondering about the three- 3's also. My least favorite is the titanium silver. Which is usually my favorite color!

The matte Grey looks the best. Its darker, so maybe its hiding some of the lines? Like black usually does?

It would be interesting to get confirmation on this, rather then just the camera angles, lighting and color.

I think it looks great, and is just simply ahead of the curve. This is what vehicles are going to have to look like to compromise between utility and efficiency.

The new Prius does something similar...but thank goodness Tesla has Franz!

    Bruin1996
LOL at the Bolt, i3, or Leaf... They need to step up their game big time to be even remotely competitive with Tesla in terms of looks, range, technology, safety, supercharger infrastructure, Autopilot, and other features.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    Sir Guacamolaf
I went with 5-6. For 35K is hella nice. Model S still looks much better IMO.

But seriously, w t h is up with that bandage nose design? Why can't they make it slightly curvy/bubble like. much like the porsche EV?
No I'm not proposing nose cone. Yes I know its an EV and it doesn't need air intake. But that is no excuse for a flat board in front either!

The i3/bolt/volt etc. are just awful in comparison! Even ray charles on a dark night wouldn't argue with that!
  • Mar 31, 2016

When they first rolled out on stage, I was sitting at about a 6. I've been steadily moving up, now sitting at a high 7. There are few angles where I think the front end looks strange, but overall it looks beautiful. I certainly won't be cancelling my reservation. I'm excited to see what the production version looks like in person.

A very nice looking car with a lot of classic Tesla design elements! As for those complaining about the nose:
Get used to it! future electric cars won't need a grill, and if you really really want a grill, here is a tip for you:

If there's anything I've learned here, it's that the front of the car is going to be different when delivered. So they will keep evaluating the look. Franz won't let us down.

    Ulmo
I love the interior and top, really like the sides, and like the rear. I timed how long it took for me to get used to the front: 15 minutes. Suddenly, not only was I used to it, but went right to liking it! It's amazing how ingrained the explosion grill is in our brains. It takes some time to get used to it not being there.

I'm actually not finalizing any purchasing decisions on this reveal because a lot of Model X reservationists had issues with items that changed from reveal to launch. I'm using this reveal as a guide to what it will be kinda close to. But, according to the videos, they are saying this is relatively close to target, and I get the impression it is closer than the original X reveal was to that product.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    Ulmo
That was actually my first response as well, but I deleted my posts about that, since (a) I didn't want to dampen it, and (b) after 15 minutes, my brain had re-acclimated to it. But two inches lower was my thought.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    tga
It's not the lack of a grill - it's that the nose looks unfinished, like that car ran into a wall and crushed the first 6 inches.
  • Mar 31, 2016
    dhanson865
So true, I have a Prius and Leaf down in my garage but I'd drive the Model 3 as it looked externally with any of the 3 wheel types shown on stage (I like the full aero wheels from the dark gray car best but then I like aero wheels).

I'd rate beauty wise the S, X and 3 as a mixed bag. I like the nose of the X better than the S or the 3 as we saw it. I like the majority of the S look better than the X or 3. I love that they'll likely offer better aero wheels on the 3 and the base wheels on the S are no longer straight spokes (very open, non aero).

I'd take any Tesla look over any Toyota or Nissan look any day.

    ljbad4life
I'm on the firm side of 9. I love the front end on the 3. The back is a little to SUV-ish but that's the only fault I can really see. I think the Model 3 is the blending of the roadster, S, and X.
I never really liked the Model S nose cone. The plastic looks so cheap and out of place for a 70k+ car. I never thought the S is ugly,I would just live with nose cone.
  • Mar 31, 2016

A lot of those 'weird' characteristics you can blame on physics. If a curved here or a curve there gives it a much lower drag coefficient they may sacrifice some aesthetics for a few miles of range.

It's quite nice, a bit like they took my STI hatchback and beat the ugly out of it. I would rather have a more wedged nose, but I know that type of design is no longer permitted due to pedestrian safety concerns.

I voted 8 it is amazing couldn't have asked for more, and I think it will only get better from now as Tesla has done with S and X. I was bit surprised but in a very glad way that is Elon focused what you get which is really amazing if you add up all those things (215miles, supercharger, autopilot hardware, lexury interior & exterior and more) for 35k.

Concerns from folks about the bandage front end, I believe with the license plate mounted there it will fill the void and I wouldn't have to worry about how I will front plate the car. I also think this may change a bit as well as I feel like it lacks just a little bit of the tesla style ie the T that is between frunk door and nosecone/bumper instead of 'Tesla' right on top of the frunk.

I would hope there would be a secondary display for just the driver like in the s and x but it would be cool if it is a really nice high visual quality hud, it will be annoying to look at the center while driving in freeway.

It's amazing. It's the direction Toyota should have gone with the gen 4 Prius IMO.

Granted, with an MK1 Golf, gen 1 Insight, gen 2 Prius, and a Mercedes Heckflosse sedan, I like big butts and I cannot lie. But my wife likes it too, and she's far more discriminating.

How can anonyone not give this car a 10+ ?
You should compare it to the Leaf,Bolt,I3 and you will give it a 11+
For an 35k $ Electric car , it looks too good !
Stop comparing it to 100k$+ cars and you will see the point of this

The Model 3 front end reminds me of the Renault Caravelle.

Agree the front is ugly, I like the s but the x front is very ugly and plain, I know it doesn't need one but a simulated grill type area like the S looks much better, especially for those of us in states that require a front plate

Overall I like it, best looking all electric vehicle in is price range. Not excited about the nose or the computer screen interior. This could change for the actual production vehicle. In the end what really matters is what the general public that would buy this car think about it.
  • Apr 1, 2016
    jdevo2004
The point is that Musk said he did not want to create weird-mobiles that the public is not use to....well it is a weird-mobile. Some sort of nose end features to break up the blunt lines would have been nice. Some well placed chrome or a larger Tesla badge. Right now it is just boring and incomplete. Not sexy AT ALL.
  • Apr 1, 2016
    Galve2000
I like the Model 3 overall. Mostly b/c it reminds me of the Model S which I love.

I'm a little confused with why 1 or the 3 cars shown had different, Model S-like, door handles and the other 2 didn't.

Also, as much as I understand that putting the big sheet of glass in the rear gives the rear passengers some much appreciated headroom, the one first drive video I have seen so far makes it seem like the front wind shield is a bit too cramped and stout for my tastes. I would have reversed the two if possible. Never mind that for so many people the rear seats will only get occasional use.

The nose cone is slowly growing on me.. tho I cannot for the life of me believe that a near vertical nose cone like that helps with the coefficient of drag. I am, however, not an expert on such matters and perhaps the "battering-ram" style nose cone punching through the air is the best way to go.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the price. and so I voted a solid 7. I think they have done a wonderful job so far given the constraints.

I also suspect they will put auto-pilot feedback somewhere in front of the driver in the final iteration.

People will see what they want to see. Musk could roll out a Yugo and Tesla groupies would love it. To me, the 3 looks like a squished Model S with a less attractive front end and a pushed in rear. And the front end reminds me of Sally from the Disney movie Cars. Obviously changes will be made but if Musk doesn't make the car more attractive then the superficial crowd will stick to BMW, Audi, etc.

Outside of the anti-fossil fuel crowd, I'm not sure the entry level luxury driver will buy a Model 3 over a BMW.

Maybe youre right but the front isn't finalized. I bet they'll tweak it a bit just like they did with the Model S an X. That Panoramic glass is stunning. So there's some good and bad to the design. I bet they'll add a grill of some sort to the front anyways

I think it's great. Seems like the three cars where each a little different to spur this kind of discussion. My wife who is going to be the actual driver of the ? and a friend that also has a reservation in really like the red one. Do the ladies appear to like the red one?

I think with enough time and pictures I can get a bad photo of any car at the right angle and lighting.
I imagine Tesla will tweek the front a bit but I can live with what is offered pretty easily.

    stopcrazypp
Yes, I like it a lot more than the X. It was pretty much what I expected. As others put it, the front looks like a Panamera (the only good looking part of a Panamera).

I'm happy the side profile and rear end does not have the bulbous look of the X (which understandably is to accommodate the 3rd row), but rather keeps the sleek lines of the S. I'm more disappointed that there is no hatch, but rather it is a trunk.

    boofagle
I was slightly disappointed when I saw it come on stage. The nose got me but then I let it sit for the night and looked at some pictures, compared it to the Bolt, and there is no question now that it is a sexy car. I said this in another thread, the Bolt looks like what you would expect an EV car for $35k should look like. The 3 looks like sex and like it should cost 3x that.

Folks ...pls don't underestimate how much ( this time around ) Musk and company are concerned about showing too many cards this early to their competition ! This goes for both the exterior and the interior. The front nose/grill is the easiest thing among other things to change.

Also, I won't be surprised if they are looking to folks like us for feedback. I believe women, for one thing, would find the front TOO Masculine ! So, I hope Tesla is listening. My daughter's instant comment at the live unveil, btw.

Having noticed that more than 85 % of the people in line ( from global pics) were men , I think Tesla needs to pick up the optics for women who make up 50 PC of the market and are generally undeserved ( when the designers and primary decision makers are largely men !!!) . please LISTEN Tesla !

I'd like to see the non-matte colors without chrome to see how that impacts the "look". I realize not everyone likes matte finishes, but (opinion coming) you can't deny how much more aggressive that finish, with no chrome, looked than the traditional finishes.

In my opinion, the front will change. I'm no design guru but it seems too flat compared to the gradual lines of the rest of the body. Perhaps it is just a shock at seeing a vehicle with no grille, but at first glance that is the only part of the body that gives me pause. The rear is fairly minimalist too, but there are a number of cars with similarly styled rear ends.

My first impression was that it reminded me of the S, only the 'mini' S. Similar to the Corolla is size? They've shrunk the trunks, making it smaller but on the same chassis/battery platform. Simple clean design with some awesome curves, in particular the midships and back, roof is radical. The display does not look fitted, maybe they need to mount at an angle towards driver. Just my two cents. I do like the dark silver, making way from my usual preference of silver.

Love it, particularly the sloping roof line back to the tail. In comparison, the Leaf, i3 and other all-electrics, are butt-ugly to me. (No offense to owners of those care that appreciate their look, but style is in the eye of the beholder.)

Much like the front end of the X, the snout on the 3 is growing on me. I think if the front had a smooth transition into the hood, it would end up looking very generic and boring, while the crease gives the front end some personality. BTW, IMO, the front end of the X looks much better in person than in pics.

    My thoughts...
Overall exterior was great, however I thought the matte grey car did not look good, silver and red fantastic.

Front end and headlights great, sleek and clean, Porsche like.

Rear glass fantastic, although lift gate would be much more useful than trunk, but I wouldnt sacrifice the amazing roof to get it.

Interior I think there is more coming... Maybe some kind of cool HUD, maybe optional, like where do u see AP graphic screen?

Specs for base model exceeded expectations, and if you can option it with a bigger battery and AP for 45k that's amazing!
  • Apr 1, 2016

I like the V line & placement of the T badge on the X. The 3 front is a bit odd proportionally. I do wish it had a lift back because they are so versatile, but I suspect the trunk will differentiate it from the CUV Model Y that will probably have the lift back. I love the look of the glass, but I think the same basic look could be achieved by splitting the glass in 2 with internal support (just like windshield to sunroof in the front) and creating a lift back.

    ^^^ I agree.
They really need to do something about that big empty space in the front bumper though :)
Put a piece of glossy plastic on it , or something! It just looks so odd and unfinished as it stands.
Rest of the car is just about perfect , for it's price point can't ask for more.

I found this online, a small design change for the front. Personally, I think anything there will make the car more aesthetically pleasing. Luckily, this is a prototype and I'm sure they'll add some small tweaks to it, including the interior.

Here's how I see it: If the Model S is the "good looking" parent, and the Model X is the "fairly un-attractive" parent......I am glad this one looks more like the Model S.
  • Apr 1, 2016
    TaoJones
The weakest design element of the Model S is the black plastic nose cone. And it is not terrible - merely discordant. But not nearly as much of an abomination as the current Lexus gaping maw front ends.

By comparison, I like the Model 3 front end. And yes, odds are that it will improve.

All things considered, you have to hand it to the design team. For a first look, they've hit a home run. Hopefully marketing will do likewise in order to make the ordering process as, um, un-Porschelike as possible.

Simple is good. It will be hard enough to position the car below the Model S - that right there will be a tightrope.

I was wondering why no one was talking about the awkward front.

We are simply used to something in the front than a bland vertical plate. I guess something to do with face recognition that is hardwired in all of us. Notice how the head lights (eyes) are getting smaller in cars with "aggressive" stance.

Agreed. Looks like a baby Model S in this video. I have mixed feelings about the design, but it looks gorgeous here!

Although I wonder what happened to the car that's not supposed to look like any other car on the road today? I'd buy this notchback Model 3 in a heartbeat, but I'm still on the lookout for the "deliciously futuristic" car with falcon wing doors.
