Idiot Moments with a Tesla part 1

  • Jun 6, 2015

What are some of your favorite "idiot" moments?

I thought I had read enough on these forums, and elsewhere about the quirks that I figured I'd be saved from them.

    But Nope.

On day one I went to my garage to pull the HPWC cord out, but it wasn't turning white. I'd hit the switch and it would start charging again and so I'd push it again. I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it wasn't releasing. Then it downed on me that I didn't have the key. It wasn't going to let me mess with it without the key. I kinda wish it had a voice like Kit that would tell me to bugger off.

I think I'm going to disable all the auto-present, auto-lock because when it's in my garage I don't want anything locked. I also don't want the key nearby since I believe it causes extra power drain if it's within range. With those on walking around in the garage with the key drove it bunkers.

I'm about to set off to go supercharge it and hopefully no one is there too witness my first attempt. If I manage that then I'll level up and I'll try the Chademo charger. I heard that takes the most getting used to.

Awesome car if you can call that it. I'm not sure what you'd call it. Calling it a car seems to do it disservice. I'm a little torn on my preferred way of driving it on Hwy's, and freeways. On the one hand the throttle/regen control are top notch, but on the other hand the TACC is pretty amazing when it stops behind someone. Sure you can't and should never trust it entirely. But, it's extremely tempting considering our freeways are 70mph or 0-10mph. Often just a few miles from each other.

Create a driver profile called Garage and configure it with handle presentation and auto lock turned off and the seat moved back to make it easier to exit the car.
  • Jun 6, 2015
    S4WRXTTCS
    OH, that's the ticket.

Now I'll have three driver profiles

    Drive/Normal
Exit (I have this, but I haven't used it)
    Garage

Or I might do as you suggested and put exit and garage into one.

But, that definitely does solve it. Thanks.

If you're worried about power drain, you might want to turn your home AC setting up while your car is powering it :)
Oh wait, you meant HPWC. Yea, sorry, it was too good to pass up.

Haha, yeah that's not what I meant to put. I meant the HPWC.

My idiot moment happened not long ago, actually.

I was in a hurry and hopped in to back out of my garage and the car started beeping at me. I was like, "What? What do you want?"

I had forgotten to unplug  So my tune changed and I apologized for snapping at the car when it was just trying to help. Not that the car has the capacity to care.

Was in a rush, ignored the charge port open warning on the dash until I got onto the main road. Caught my error right before I got onto the freeway. Had to pull over on the side of the busy road to close my charge port door.

Was a big facepalm moment.

I did this to when I had a P85D loaner. My ICE has the wiper control where the drive selector is on the MS. I wonder how many times I will do this once I get the P85D.

    ecarfan
Don't beat yourself up about that. No harm done so not a major face palm moment IMO.
While standing in my front yard I once saw an ICE car driving down my block with a gas station nozzle and 10 ft of hose attached stuck in the fuel filler hole. Incredible as it may sound, the driver must have filled their tank, paid, and forgot to remove the nozzle before driving away, ripping the hose out of the gas pump and not being aware of what they had done. The closest gas station was almost a mile away. One of my neighbors was also in his front yard (we were doing some gardening) and he saw the car too. We just stared at each other, speechless.

    True story.

Now that is a major face palm.

For the first week I owned my Tesla I would occasionally look down for the fuel level to see if I should stop at the gas station I was passing.

I've done that 3 or 4 times already myself, including once today. When you live in Phoenix, where it only rains maybe 15 times a year, it's easy to forget how to control your wipers!

I was convinced something was wrong as my car just wouldn't auto lock when I walked away. I double checked the settings and it was turned on. It went on for days. Very frustrating. Finally I found that I left my second key inside the car in a small bag! All this time someone could have just walked up, and driven the car away. :-o

This is true for my at least all the P85Ds and I think all the D models. Very handy. The port also opens when you touch the front of it.

If you do that, just remember not to use exit profile at the mall (or your choice of public space) as the car will remain unlocked.

I saw this at a gas station about a mile from my house, except the driver had pulled the entire gas pump off its mount and dragged it into the road before realizing it.

There was no fire and no major spillage of gas, but fire department came and sprayed a little foam, I guess just for the fun of using the equipment.

I heard a thump in my frunk every time I accelerated from a stop. It worried me but not too much since the car seemed to function normally. I called the service center. Took it over there. Come to find out it was my basketball. I've had that basketball in my frunk since about day 2. I never heard any noise from it in the first 6 months. Then magically one day. I don't think I opened the frunk the previous 2 weeks before the noise. #brainfart

I picked the car up from having the windows tinted and on the way home I couldn't engage the TACC. The car would just beep and display "Cruise control not available." I was on the phone with my wife at the time and after hearing me puzzle over this for 10 minutes, she asked "Did you forget to take the car out of valet mode?"
  • Jun 8, 2015

    - Multiple times exiting the car while it was in Drive...
    - Leaving a supercharger and getting on the highway with the charge port open...
    - Supercharging and getting onto the roadway only to be encountered by 60 miles or so of RED traffic (quickly exited at the next exit and
took an alternative route but hadn't accounted for the detour...)

About every 50th trip, when I get home in the garage... I reach up to the spot on my dash where the key used to be in my previous car, and I try to grab and rotate an imaginary key to OFF... grasping only air. Oh, ya.. no key.

    Talk about entrenched muscle memory.

Took an airplane to visit family. Rented an ICE car. Went to the grocery store.
When I returned to the car there was a family standing around it. They told me they were concerned.
I had left the keys in the car, the engine running, the radio on. I just walked away from it like I usually do with my Tesla.
For some reason, the ICE car didn't turn itself off and lock up.

Ah, the rental car. Right. No problems with the Tesla, really, but last time I got a rental car:

    • Several times I walked up to the car... stood there for a second, and then dug into my pocket for the keyfob
    • Then I would get in belt up, and then had to dig in my pocket again for the car keys
    • ...which were of course in my hand a few seconds ago when I unlocked the doors.
    • A couple of times I got out of the car, looked at it... and leaned back in and retrieved the key from the ignition
    • Constantly frustrated with the throttle lag, then the car would wind up with this big sound, and then not much would happen
    • My portable GPS kept unplugging itself, and the batteries are tired so it would power off at all the wrong moments
    • Returning the car at LAX, I couldn't figure out how to open the gas tank door. Totally failed to find it - I eventually gave up and returned car with partial tank. (Tip: some cars have it on the sidewall right underneath the driver's door. Like I could ever find that at night...)

Clearly the Model S reprograms your car-brain.

Just got my car for a week now. Yesterday evening, I wanted to clean my window. I was on the highway and it was already dark. It wasn't raining, the window was just a tad dirty. On all of my previous cars, you pull back on the windshield wiper handle for a short spray + some wiper-strokes... So I did.
Instead of window cleaner being sprayed on my window, my high beam lights were lighting up the road in front of me. Including lighting up the insides of the next car, about a 75 meters (275 ft.) in front of me. They instantly hit the breaks for a short period.
When I passed them, the people in that car really looked pissed at me. I was sorry and really didn't mean to do that. I even said so, but of course they could not hear me.
    We need a sorry-I-messed-up-button.

For the first week of ownership I assumed my car didn't come with washer fluid. I'd press the windshield wiper button on the stalk, and the only thing that happened was the wipers would go on, no water being sprayed... then I accidentally pressed it harder. Whoops.

Same thing. I was literally on my way to the auto parts store to buy fluid when I was like "hey, there's two arrows on this symbol, I wonder..." and bam, out came my washer fluid.

I've driven the car for a good 6 months... my wife drives it for the first time last weekend (very nervous), and while on the highway, puts the car into neutral by mistake, when she tried to turn the wipers on. I was keenly watching (her, not her driving!) and noticed this immediately, so I helped her get it back into drive ASAP, as otherwise it could have become a dangerous situation. Later in the trip, I take over driving, AND DO THE SAME THING. 6 months, no issues, yet as soon as I see her do it, somehow I end up repeating the mistake lol.

Adding to the 'Duh' list. After a week plus of ownership, went to pick up a buddy. Couldn't remember for the life of me where the door locks where.
Ended up rolling down the window so he could pop the door handle from the inside. To make it worse, he showed me on the Controls screen where the unlock button is, EVEN THOUGH HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A TESLA!

I've had my Model S for over a year, and thought I had gotten past these "idiot moments". Last week, I wanted to use the wiper fluid to clean the windshield, and pushed the "park" button in, at 65 mph on the freeway! I was very happy that the car told me that it wasn't allowed.

This thread is entertaining... maybe someone can give me a tip - we have a LEAF now with plan to upgrade to Model S next year. The problem is that about half the time when my wife drives the LEAF, she forgets to plug it in when she comes into the house. If I don't happen to notice, then I don't have enough charge the following day.

Should I tell her that once we get the Tesla, if I should die before her, she should go ahead and sell the car so that she doesn't end up getting stranded?

I used to have a Unix script running which would text me if my car was not plugged in at 9pm.

In the first couple weeks with the car I was doing things in the garage and had this same problem with the handles. I took the key out of my pocket and left it on the windshield right above the wiper to stop the madness. Later that day we drove home about 90 miles on the interstate, only to find I didn't have the key in my pocket. Then I remembered I had left it on the windshield. Sure enough, there it was, resting on the wiper. I have to imagine the only reason it managed to stay there was that I had one of those silicone fob pockets on it so it was quite grippy. I got lucky but I felt pretty dumb.

I make giant floor pillows for a non profit as a volunteer effort. Well, I went out the day I was to drive them down to deliver them and I couldn't find my key anywhere. (Note that I have already lost one key in the house and still cannot find it. I know it's in the house because I was detailing my wheels the night before (in my PJs-of course) and went straight to bed when done. Nowhere to be found in the am. So it can only be in the garage or my bedroom. Yes, I checked the washer and dryer...8 months later-still haven't found it) But back to the story...So I was particularly annoyed at losing yet another key in my own house.

I searched everywhere for an hour or so. My blood pressure raising by the moment. Then I looked at all the bags of pillows piled up in my garage waiting to be loaded. I says to myself, I says...self, could the key be in the pillows??? It was in my pocket when I was sewing them up. So there I am (again in my PJs-must be a theme here), picking up the 3ft square pillows and holding each one to the side of the car in the hopes that it might open. Well, there were 50 of these damn things piled up. About 2/3rd's the way through, low and behold the car opens up! Yes, I had sewn my last Tesla key into the pillow, destined for a far off place (well, not far: Big Sur). So I cut a hole in the pillow, got the key out and sewed it back up again.

    Oy.

Just earlier tonight I parked in a car garage. Pushed the button to open the power lift gate and to fetch the J1772 adapter while gawking at the shiny red Model S charging next to mine. Then suddenly realized that the garage floor beam that I was parked under is dangerously low and the lift gate was going to hit it so I scrambled to stop it from lifting any further. Fortunately it stopped by itself no more than a couple of inches from the concrete beam.

    I'm a lucky bastid.

Old thread, but I'll add my dumb moment:

The first autopilot upgrade came over the air, and so was very new to me. I engaged the autopilot... it seemed to work fine, but I was still nervous about it and kept my hands firmly on the wheel. I put on the turn signal for a lane change and loosened my grip on the wheel to let the car maneuver. Sure enough, the car changed lanes. I looked down at the display, and autopilot wasn't actually engaged at all. I suppose I'm lucky the car drifted in the correct direction.
  • Mar 10, 2016

This has happened to me. It happens, IMO, due to a light grip the wheel. -- similar to how a Ouija board planchette moves around.
  • Mar 11, 2016
    DJung
I'll do something similar. There is a part of my commute where a carpool lane begins on the far left. In my usual fashion, I'll get into the far left and pull the stalk twice for AutoPilot. But with music on and just a force of habit, I sometimes don't notice that AP is temporarily unavailable (Usually happens for about 2 seconds while the car readjusts to the new lane). I've caught a few times myself letting go of the wheel and failing to notice for a good 3 seconds that AutoPilot failed to enable. Sometimes the Lane Departure Warning goes off and the car doesn't steer when the highway takes a very slight curve. I've tried to force myself into the habit of double checking before letting go of the wheel. Hasn't happened any time recently though, so it seems like that strategy is working.

Anyone and everyone who gets into an accident because they "trusted" autopilot, and then ALSO blames autopilot for the accident (rather than taking responsibility for their decision to be an inattentive driver) should be posting here and receiving a boot to the head.

Mine happened a week ago on a Friday. This was at the Folsom Supercharger. I was coming back from charging and another person was standing to the side eating some type of chicken or tuna salad in his container while he was charging. As I approached he asked if that was my car, I acknowledged that it was and the older gentleman asked how to turn on scheduled charging at home.

So I hopped in his car thinking I knew exactly where it was. The charging screen was already up since it was supercharging but the schedule time option was grayed out. This got me thinking that I needed to stop charging before the option was available so I pressed the stop charging option on the center console. Once it stopped and the option was still grayed out, I then realized that you wouldn't have that option for superchargers and that it was location based charging so the option wouldn't be available until then.

Once I explained that to him and showed him where he needed to turn on schedule charging, he proceeded to ask on opening the frunk. His Model S didn't look new so my guess is he bought it used from private seller, CPO or borrowed it from someone. After I showed him how to open it and to carefully close it since it is prone to dents, he thanked me by offering me the book of Mormon.

After politely declining and continuing on my way as I had an appointment to attend to, I realized that once I got on the freeway I don't think I started the supercharging after manually stopping it from the screen. I hope he didn't stay there too much longer waiting for it to charge or is still waiting there.

Sorry book of Mormon guy, my bad.

Also guilty of trying to put the car into Drive while still plugged in.

I just took delivery of my MS a few days ago and during the delivery inspection, I noticed how high the hatchback goes up. The delivery specialist showed me how you can set the hatchback to only open at a certain height...very smart feature.
  • Mar 11, 2016

This is indeed a good feature. My 9-year-old son uses it because he can't (easily) close the trunk when the liftgate is all the way up, so he stops it part-way up.

The idiot moment comes after he says, "Hey, Dad, can you help me load/unload [whatever] in the trunk." I duck under the liftgate to deal with [whatever], and then promptly forget that it's at a lower-than-normal height, straightening up and hitting my head on the liftgate. I've done this at least twice. :)

That happened to my wife once. We were just back from a 2 week road trip driving the Model S, took the BMW ICE to pickup our dog from the kennels. Stopped by the gas station on the way back. Driving away she heard a clunk... looked back and saw the gas nozzle with hose dangling and dragging. Quickly put the hose back (without re-connecting it - didnt know how) and made a quick exit before the station manager made his way out front. Made me promise not to tell our friends. Hahaha.

I had the opposite experience a couple weeks ago. I thought I turned off auto-steer (or was forced to by an HOV lane change). I later did a lane change pretty much as I normally would but (1) didn't notice autosteer was on and (2) didn't get a ding + disable from too much torque applied to the wheel by me. When I get bored travelling sometime (a few roadtrips planned this year) on a mostly empty freeway, I might experiment a bit with it.

Ugh, I swear me with this car is just a series of stupid moments on my part.

Within weeks of ownership I scratched the rear bumper getting a bike out of the car. It happened right before I was going to get the xpel-ultimate on the front so I decided to add it to the back to protect against future moments.

Then a few months later on I accidentally pushed the trunk button instead of the frunk like I wanted. So the truck went up and scratched against my garage. So it left a tiny gouge where the metal part of the garage hit. I tried to order touch up paint, but Tesla didn't carry it and gave no indications of ever doing so.

Then just today I took my jeep to get a stand/sit computer desk, but the large top piece didn't fit. So I went home, and a tape measure proved that it would fit in the Tesla. So I brought the Tesla, and it laid out perfectly. What I didn't realize at the time that the cardboard box was rubbing against the driver side seat back. I do keep a towel in my car for things like this, but I didn't think to use it. I don't know why I didn't. Just one of those moments where I rushed things a bit. Of course it scratched the seat back, and I don't know what to do about it. I should have just paid the $100+ delivery fee, and prevented my Tesla from being damaged.

Aside from loving to drive this car, and most everything about it I have to admit it's just not the car for me when it comes to wanting to keep it nice.

Eh, i don't worry so much about the seat backs. Well, i *can't* worry about them so much. My kids don't miss an opportunity to grind mud and rocks into them.

100% xpel on the outside though. Provides peace of mind if nothing else.
