How long was your wait in line? (I think we were at the slowest store..) part 1

  • Apr 8, 2016
    AEdennis
So, it's been over a week and like over 100k+ other people, I stood in line for the Model 3. We were 240-242 (thanks for the count and some of your pictures @Mark Z ) in line and waited five hours from the time we arrived.

After reading what people experienced in their lines and talking with fellow Model 3 reservation holders, I wondered...

If the line we were in at Brea Mall (California) was the slowest during Model 3 Release Day

We were in line from 9:15 am and was done with our reservation at 2:16 pm (here's the blog).

How fast or how slow was the line you were in on 3/31?

Pasadena: got there around 9 am and finally reserved at 1 pm. Not quite as slow as yours.

I went in the afternoon, so I only waited 20 minutes. But my Dad got in line shortly before the store opened, and it took him just about 3 hours to get to the front. He was #442 in line. So yeah, his line went a lot faster than yours.

I got in line at 11:00 at the Houston Galleria location. A Tesla employee was counting the line when I got there and I heard him say 200. I was done paying and walking back to my car at 12:35.

Arrived Palm Desert (California) from coastal Los Angeles county at 0600. My chair, and shortly thereafter, me, after making a proper double honey mocha espresso in the car, were #6 in line. Numbers #1-#3 had arrived the evening before from San Berdoo.

Doors opened at 1000, and there were reportedly 200 people in line as it trailed down the block and around the corner. I was done by 1007.

My rationale was that the extra hour's drive to a less-populated area would be better than waiting in a longer line after driving less. That, and I don't mind driving longer distances for some odd reason. The population of the desert cities this time of year might be 500,000. At 0530 there were 80 people in line at Santa Monica and 40 people in line at Burbank - both had hundreds in line as the morning progressed, and I understand that Pasadena was worse. My second option was Brea, but I figured they'd get quite a bit of traffic as well - and evidently from the post upthread, they did.

A friend reserved at the Santa Monica store late afternoon that day. No line of which to speak.

And so history was made. Fun stuff. Was glad to see, that evening, that the car didn't look bad, to boot. Was a little sad as well, as the Model 3 sure looked like a potential (down the road) Model S killer to me, but such would be the way of things. When your choices come down to the Model S or the Model 3, life is pretty damned good.

Besides which, one can expect that they'll differentiate the two models for awhile yet anyway. Think BMW 3 series versus BMW 7 series, for example, not to mention Mercedes, Honda, and to a different extent, GM.

Got there at 9:20am, reserved at 11:45am.

Probably 200ish people ahead of me based on estimations by me and the guy in front of me. Line was still back to my original location when I got out and stayed like that for another hour or so. Probably 400ish people through the line by 1-2pm.

Good planning... We had a lot of San Bernardino and Riverside folks that showed up in Brea... Plus (as you can see from my blog post and earlier in the thread) it was DARN SLOW. (until just before we placed our order and three more order takers showed up.

    So, confirmed your information.

Burbank had some news coverage though... Then again, Channel 7/KABC and I think Chanel 4/KNBC is "around the block" from that location.

I assume that this was the Cleveland/Lyndhurst Sales, Service, and Delivery Center (with a Supercharger (for Center/not public use) in the Service Area in the back). I remember being there in 2015 on our Cross-Country Roadtrip 2015. Nice, friendly service there. Was the guard bird (a Canada Goose) still around? (or did he fly South for the Winter)

Yeah, there were still a ton that added on while we kept moving, I would estimate 500 total...

Cool. Saw your video post in this thread. I actually included your (Montreal's) line experience in the rain in my blog-post.

Charlotte NC doors opened at 10, and I was #27 in line (arrived at 7am). Once inside, the line split into two lines, so I ended up being about #20 in the store to get mine in, but there was an internet connection issue that delayed the reservations by a little bit (I think people were about ready to get out their pitchforks!). Mine went through around 10:30am.

Got there at 8:30am. Was shocked to see the size of the line. Considered getting breakfast, but sacrificed calories for the cause. I was about the 100th (guy 7ish people in front of me officially counted 90 in front of them) person in line.

Got done shortly before 10:30am. Five stations, super efficient in my opinion.

I wonder if there was some sort of internet connection issues (getting used to the style change to lowercase Internet)... because @jchau was at Brea as well:

That's only 45 minutes ahead of me to line up, but an hour and 45 minutes earlier to complete the registration. o_O Wonder what happened in between. (were there three order takers?)

Yup... Lots of folks where I was too.

Out the door of a mall, or was this a free standing location?

    Thanks.

I wonder if you saw the Transport Evolved folks... They were interviewing folks at that location.

Yeah, I would say, 30 minutes to go 100 people, that's efficient.:)

They added three more order takers (for a total of six) just before it was time for us to place our orders around 2:14pm. So, throughput picked up significantly. (like a Supercharger augment (Harris Ranch anyone?))

I saw that with Tweets from Tesla AU folks. I had a contact in Melbourne that went at his lunchtime and there was no line by then.

Good thing the Texas Triangle is now connected to the rest of the SC network.

Tesla will have to complete I-80 from Ohio to New Jersey through PA for these folks. One has to go South to Maryland right now to travel via SC.

That is pretty efficient for those three folks.

You might want to check out the Teslaroadtrip folks... They're doing a great event in May near you... (Near being relative, I'm in California)

I arrived to the Tyson's Corner-Tyco Road, Virginia store at 8:30 am and I was #115 or so in the line. I was out of the store, reservation made, at 11:05 am. From the moment the store opened at 10:00 am, it took me around an hour to make a reservation.. I think it moved at a good pace. There were probably some 150-200 still in line when I left at 11:10 am.

Denver, arrived at 8:00 to a deceptive line (store is in a mall), looked like a dozen people and I was told to head upstairs. Saw a secondary line of about 80 people, figured that was pretty good, got the end and was told to head outside in the snow. The line out there was about another 100 people or so. They started taking reservations around 11am, so waited outside about 3 hours, got into the mall and waited another hour or so. I think in the end there were another 400-500 people behind me.

Loved every minute (except when I couldn't feel my toes)...

That's faster than what we had. What number were you in line?

That seems a little faster than Brea...

Not too many people in line there. Must be the effect of expired GA State incentives... Can you imagine what the price would have been if GA still had its state incentives.

That's a SIX hour wait (or five minutes according to when they opened metric).

    Still earlier than online orders.

Funny! Latest is SC all the way to Alaska (according Elon's latest tweets...) just no word of when that portion of SC network would be complete

    How many order takers?

I arrived at Buena Park before 9:00 AM. The line was very long, more importantly, there was nowhere to park nearby... So, that's what made us go to Brea.

Still earlier than me. 11:00 AM Hawaii time is 2:00 PM Pacific Time, if I'm not mistaken... And I reserved at 2:16 PM Pacific. (six minutes later than you.)

That's hardcore. I think you beat the weather that Montreal had to deal with. (they had rain and you had snow...)

Thanks for the clarification, that means we were pacing the same.

We got a lot of folks from San Bernardino and Riverside in Brea.

Tesla store in Vegas? Still a line at 2:50pm?

Sacramento/Rocklin, CA. #7 in line, arrived around 6:00PM night before. When the store opened at 10:00 AM sharp, over 500 people in line. 7 reservation stations meant I was reserved around 10:03AM. They were very efficient! By 3:30PM the line as done. Total for the day around 4:00PM was close to 700. People arriving that morning were waiting on average 3 hours. A couple local news stations were live around 6:00AM. Surprisingly, the reporter from KCRA was very good, and was very accurate on Model 3 information.
Many of us in the local NorCal-Reno Tesla Owners and SacEV, volunteered to help orchestrate line control and information dissemination, freeing up the employees to take reservations. Thanks to Bonnie, Laura, and Omar et al, for organizing this. Laura and I discussed at 6:30 AM if the 80 copies of the Tesla trivia test she made for line sitters would be sufficient, but it was not even close. We provided donut holes and orange juice to those waiting in line while answering questions.
As a 13 month P85D owner it was a pleasure to sit in line, and help out. The day went off without a hitch.

"We got a lot of folks from San Bernardino and Riverside in Brea."

I drove from Riverside county to Plam Desert mainly to avoid the horrible 91 west slog. I actually test drove and ordered my Model S at the Brea mall store. The shorter lines at Palm Desert was a fringe benefit.

Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall - Arrived 7 am and was handed ticket #88 by the infamous (to everyone there that day) "Ticket Guy." This was a non-Tesla person who had the foresight to bring a roll of raffle style tickets. Came in handy because security wasn't allowing a line in front of the store, or allowing anyone to gather in front of the store. When they did allow a line, everyone had a ticket and knew where to line up.

Made my reservation at approx. 10:25.

The store staff told me later the line pretty much died out at 2 pm and they estimated 800 reservations made by that time.

Stopped by the Costa Mesa, CA location around 2:30 p.m. No one in line. Walked in and made my deposit and was gone in 5 minutes. I had heard that current owners would be prioritized based on when you took delivery of your Model S/X/Roadster so saw no reason to line up early. As AEdennis mentioned earlier, I arrived at Brea about 9:20 AM to find the line with about 315 people. I estimate the line at 400 by 10 AM based on other reports. I had a feeling this line would move slowly.

My plan was to go to Fashion Island, but I stopped by Costa Mesa about 10:20 to check on the situation. 6 persons were taking orders and Tesla staff said every 30 seconds a person would enter. The line was at 244 when I got in line (30 minutes had expired, so 60 may have been served earlier). The estimate to be done by 12:30 PM worked perfectly, as the Tesla employees were processing the reservations as fast as possible (120 an hour).

Since Brea had 3 people taking reservations (4 later that day), I was able to return to Brea and chat with AEdennis and his family. It was an exciting day to reserve a place in line for an amazing new Tesla designed electric vehicle.

Yeah I was there at 2:30am, circling, kept getting booted by security three times, finally went for breakfast at 4am. Came back at 5:30 and yep security caved and allowed the line to form. By that point, I was 14 in line, but I think because of the way they handled the multiple registration points once the store opened, I may have been number 7 registered and out the store.

I believe there were more than 500 in line by 10am, but they had 7 registration points, three iMacs, and 4 tablets. So the line I'm told was handled shortly after 1pm. Not counting all the walk-ins after that. Process was very efficient, about a minute per person (with no hiccups).

Here's the line outside at 9:45am (not counting the 60 of us that were allowed to wait inside) sped up 2x

The Orlando location is a freestanding dealership located on a cul-de-sac type street with two other dealerships - Mini and Land Rover.

I've heard of "World Cup" babies (from victorious countries)... But I guess you had a Soccer Model 3 Reservation :p:D:D

Yeah, I was following Rocklin posts via @bonnie on Twitter. I even featured one of her tweets on my blog post.

Now comes the difficult part... waiting.

One of the confirmed early reservation places... I wonder how much sooner Canada deliveries start after US. (and whether BC gets it before ON)

I went East to Buena Park and Brea, so that was against traffic, but understand the desire to go counter-traffic.

    That is impressive.

Seems inconsistent on what the count is for equipment for order taking.

That "Ticket Guy" is pretty smart. Good line management. I guess Tesla can learn for Model Y.

Depending on what number you were in line... That's about the same pace as Brea. We got in line at 9:15 AM and got out at 2:16 PM (also 5 hours)... However, proper count of time spent for purpose of Tesla speed is hours from the time the store opened (10:00 AM in Brea's case) and what position you are in line (we were 240-242) (and were lapped by @Mark Z who came by and went to Costa Mesa instead.)

@Ltespd Do you remember how many order takers you had?

That makes sense @Mark Z was at that location and got out as #220 by 1:30pm, I believe...

That's the worst... As slow as the line was at Brea, at least it grew behind us... :)

I guess you got folks from Simi and points North? (like Brea got Riverside and San Bernardino folks).

It was nice to meet all the new (to Tesla and EV) folks reserving for Model 3, but something about hanging with fellow Tesla fans as you @Mark Z The fact that you lapped us inspired my blog post (and this thread.)

And I'm sure some of those swipes were for 2 Model 3 reservations and not just 1.

That's about 2 hours faster than us and we were 240-242 at Brea.

As slow as it seems our store was, I'm still glad to have lined up and did a little Tesla and EV advocacy to those that are joining us in ownership.

Wow and they opened early. Which store again?

Your part of it was 18 hours... Tesla's part was 2 minutes for you!

That is still faster than me... We were 240-242 and out at 2:16 PM... You were #375 and out at 2:00PM

    That is pretty good.

You guys deserve a medal... though I love some of the pictures from social media. It kept us thanking our blessings being in a nice climate controlled mall in Southern California.

    What # in line?

That mall looked very busy, wonder if you met up with the Transport Evolved crew? They were filming for their EV site.

And that's in the middle of Old Town Pasadena... Did they have police assisting with the crowds? We had mall security in Brea.

You had LESS order takers and was completed about almost three hours faster than us (we were 240-242 in line and out at 2:15 PM with THREE order takers)

I was toying with a cross-country trip to reserve at an "Eastern Timezone store" for a California delivery.

Mall Security let you in at 2:45 AM! Wow a lot of folks at mall locations were kicked out until much later in the morning.

How few were in line at your location?

What time did they start? Was this another 9am store? Vancouver, Canada or Washington?

That's fast. How many order takers?

That is much faster than ours. Seven order takers is like a huge supercharger location versus some of the 2 stall configurations.

Thanks... That's what my first choice was, but no place to park within an easy walk, so I went to our alternate location (the slow one that is the subject of my blogpost and this thread.)

How many people were in line?

First to reserve in the planet, but probably one of the latter countries to take delivery.

San Diego UTC...We were done 12 minutes after the store opened. But I have to add the 13.5 hours in line when the store wasn't open (actually it was open until 9PM). Someone had talked to the staff--they were expecting 10-12 employees, and there were perhaps that many, but only 3 or 4 reservation takers. Don't know how that happened, but as someone suggested, maybe that's all the working tablets they had. We were 32nd by head count, but we should realize that it ranged from a pair of people reserving one car, to one person reserving two. It seemed to go rather quick once the doors opened.

There were about 60 in line by midnight, 120 by daybreak, and then it took off from there. 300-500 when the store opened, and a lot of people are saying 1000-1500, but I don't know how they would have counted. I got no sleep that night, and ended up chatting with another group that wasn't sleeping either. I had planned to show up at 8 or 9 AM, but at 6PM the previous evening, my wife suddenly got the bright idea of heading down right away. And so I suddenly found myself witnessing a part of history.

I heard that the Mission Valley mall kicked people out until morning, but I have no confirmation of that.

Yeah. Lots of malls kicked people out and prevented overnight and early morning line ups.

This goes back to the Apple iPhone days when the line at Brea was so long that I decided to drive to Fashion Island. It turned out the wait was much shorter for the iPhone at that location. Driving south worked again for a Model 3 reservation. Costa Mesa was suggested by a Product Specialist at the Brea store prior to March 31 since many would not think of it as a store location.

Sorry, messed up that last post (used to a different forum software).

It was Vancouver, Canada and I had my exit time wrong. They let people in at 10:00am and I was done by 10:32. At 48th in line it means they were doing better than one person per minute.

Buena Park CA store opens at 9 am, an hour earlier than most other So. Cal. stores. I arrived at 8:30 about 300-400 in line. 9:10 am a guy who was in line since midnight had his order in. There were 5 or 6 employees taking orders and I got done just after 11 am. The line then had 150-200 people still waiting.

With six order takers, still moved pretty fast.

9am opening. Man, I was there maybe 8:50am before making the drive to Brea... Oh well

Nope. Our lineup was outside the mall, prior to the mall opening. Mall Security did not let us inside until ~6:15am.

So, you waited for a few minutes to place your order! ;)

I was counting for the speed of the line once Tesla was open.

It's interesting how fast we all moved through the lines, just a matter of minutes. But oh those minutes!

Those minutes can be the difference of year in production (or more).
