fderheide my driver side FWD always, yes always, stops 3/4 of the way down, says obstacle detected, and requires dash override or button overrides to get closed.
It's getting old.
Jul 3, 2016
Hodginator What did the Tesla service center say?
Jul 3, 2016
KaiserSoze Happens to me, too, about fifty percent of the time.
Jul 3, 2016
aesculus Any chance either of you guys had your doors wrapped? My FWD only go up partially if they think there is something overhead. Last night we were out with guest on streets with no trees overhead and in parking lots and they all went up to the full height about six times.
Jul 3, 2016
NDR both of ours started doing the same thing. Our the driver side is doing it more often than the passenger side. I talked to the SC and they said it's a firmware issue, and an update is coming....hopefully soon
Jul 3, 2016
ohmman Mine did this consistently but stopped after I did an at-home detailing of the car. It hasn't come back since. Coincidence, perhaps, or maybe something to do with cleaning the jamb and hinges.
Also, title requires this.

Jul 3, 2016
Pjjava34 My drivers side FWD does exactly this 40% of the time or so (although it seems to be getting even more frequent) while the passenger side FWD recently joined the party and does it around 20% of the time. We have 2 car seats with kids in our 2 second row seats so we deal with this multiple times a day every day. I was able to make an appointment about 3 weeks ago to go to the SC and that date will be here this coming Friday so we shall see. Drives me nuts as I now just wait and hang out until the door stops short and just use the side orange button to override all the way down.
Jul 4, 2016
fderheide Pjjava34. Same here.
No wrap, clean car, doors just won't close properly.
Sent email over to the Marietta service center. No reply.
Patiently waiting I guess for a resolution.
Jul 4, 2016
aesculus On another thread at Tesla Motors one person discovered the FWD are hypersensitive to the slope the car is on. Hopefully they will refine this over time.
Jul 4, 2016
Scrith My driver's side FWD does this at least 50% of the time. I was able to reproduce it for the Palo Alto service center on the first attempt. We'll see if they can fix it...I'll let you know when I get it back from them in the coming weeks (they are just a bit backed up...I saw two Founder's X's there waiting for service when I dropped it off, btw).

K-MTG Mine stops short in the garage, before the last firmware update it would open almost fully now it open in umbrella mode
Jul 4, 2016
MattXowner I'm having trouble with mine closing too. Can't figure out what's going on.
Gosh, feel HORRIBLE for this owner. I would literally cry

Jul 4, 2016
ModelX That is one sad picture!
Jul 4, 2016
K-MTG That almost happened to me twice, started driving without closing the FWD
Jul 4, 2016
FarmerDave You can override if there's actually enough room to open fully in your garage, and the car will remember it for that location.
I had to do that after the update, also for the rear hatch.
Jul 5, 2016
Pjjava34 Gosh I would die if this happened to me. I tell myself how could anyone forget to close their wings before backing out but with two small kiddos back there and a million things to grab on the way out of the house this can and almost certainly will happen more frequently then standard doors as with standard you always shut the door after after putting your stuff or kids in there but with the FWD you can literally do it later via 5 different methods.
Jul 5, 2016
K-MTG But the height differs when the garage is opened and closed so I can't do this properly
Jul 5, 2016
K-MTG Exactly, I would appreciate a verbal warning (Elon's voice) when driving with the wings open sometimes your mind gets accustomed to all the beeps especially when parking while the parking sensors beep as well
Jul 5, 2016
cmc5dc Mine happened when I was parked in my driveway which has a slope to it. I thought that was strange at the time but didn't think anything of it.
Jul 5, 2016
vandacca Studies have shown that a woman's voice is more effective at grabbing people's attention, that's why things like the Nest smoke detectors and the Enterprise use female voices. Besides, by the time I got Elon's warning with all the "ums, uh, yeah, etc", it'll probably be too late. ;-) He is a brilliant guy, but not the best speaker. The only person I know that's a worse speaker than him, is me!
Jul 5, 2016
Saxena Not sure, but our understanding is that it will still use the sensors to detect obstacles even if you have set it to 'fully open in this location'. I think the partial open update was to be cautious due to the edge cases where the sensors don't pick up some odd pillars, poles, etc. Haven't tested it out, so be cautious if you try it.
Jul 5, 2016
ReturnZero Mine does this too. Mostly with the driver's side FWD, but started on the passenger side as well now. I'm really hoping the SC can fix this, wife is getting impatient with the doors.
Jul 5, 2016
Pjjava34 Yup same as me. Started with driver side and now passenger fwd does it too. Same deal with the wifey.
Jul 5, 2016
ohmman I've sent a request to Tesla to disable driving in the car with the FWDs open, but to provide override capability. In other words, you put the car in reverse or drive, and it says it can't go because of FWDs being open and won't move until you override from the main screen. I think this would help more than a voice.
Jul 5, 2016
K-MTG How about making the navigation voice Elon's voice?
Jul 5, 2016
Muzzman1 @fderheide I was able to resolve this in my Wife's X by holding the B-pillar up button in the up position for 45 seconds as the FWD creeps up, then hold it down for another 45 secs for about 20 secs after is closes. This "calibrates" the sensors from what I have gathered, and resolves the concern for at least a couple weeks now.
Jul 5, 2016
aesculus When you override for an obstruction to be saved in the locations, can the save height be less than full open?
Jul 5, 2016
roser I have the same partial close issue on the passenger side. Quite annoying as I need to watch the door close completely and confirm it shut before starting to walk away.
Jul 11, 2016
roser Anyone have a fix for this? I tried the 45 second up/down but it didn't work. The FWD gets stops about 80% of the time now and I have to press "close" multiple times to get the door to close completely. Service center appointment in Burlingame, CA is 6 weeks out.
Jul 19, 2016
PianoProdigy Add me to the list with consistent "obstacle detected" problems. My doors are wrapped though I don't know that it has anything to do with it. I tried the reset technique described in this thread, but it didn't appear to do anything (the doors just closed and stayed closed and nothing happened despite holding the button for a solid 30 seconds longer). I would say my doors detect an obstacle at least 50% of the time. My 3-year-old has a mild panic attack while sitting in her car seat when her door doesn't close all the way "oh no! fix it!"
Jul 19, 2016
roser No wrap on my car, but I do have a carseat on the side that won't close. Maxi-cosi brand/style. Bulky but doesn't touch the door. My 2 year old says "FAIL!" when the door stops short. SC said it would be a firmware fix, but the new firmware they pushed to my car didn't help at all.
Jul 19, 2016
SSD420 I already got the firmware update... I got it last week when I was at the SC for a different issue and we noticed that my FWD don't open when I stand near the door or park near another car.
SINCE getting that update, I find that my Driver side FWD stops short claiming an obstacle about 65% of the time. I have to force it down manually using the buttons on the door.
Jul 19, 2016
SSD420 I have no wrap or anything extra added to my car.
Jul 19, 2016
HookBill You beat me to the punch with the Frank Costanza reference. Darn!
Jul 20, 2016
Dazureus I got my X back from the SC to resolve this issue and so far I haven't had any trouble with the afflicted Falcon Wing Door. Here's the service note:
checked operation. verified pass falcon door will intermittently not close and states obstacle detected when no obstacle is in range. Checked inductive sensor at falcon door. senors are in good physical condition and properly secured. checked wiring for chafing, no chafing found. power ground and signal are all present and proper. necessary to replace sensor and perform firmware update in attempt to remedy false object detection.
after induction sensor replacement, necessary to install firmware, loaded and installed. verified version and checked operation of door. door is operating normally and closing properly.
Kudos to the Cleveland SC for handling this so well. I had it in for a few other issues and everything has been resolved to my satisfaction.
Jul 20, 2016
SSD420 I had an issue again today. I manually closed it using the inside button
Jul 20, 2016
CmdrThor Good to hear. My parts finally arrived that were ordered three weeks ago, but couldn't get an appointment until 3 weeks out. The frequency of false object detection has gone down significantly recently though, not sure if that is due to the latest update. Also not terribly worried about the long wait as I also had a passenger door latch issue 3 weeks back and they handled that the next day (could have been same day if I was willing to take a loaner). This issue is more of an annoyance since it doesn't render the vehicle inoperable.
Jul 20, 2016
Scrith The problem with the door not closing was fixed during my last service center visit, fortunately!
Jul 20, 2016
SSD420 I was told they fixed it. They also updated my software. I have since had more problems after that update though.
Jul 22, 2016
Oloron Took delivery of my car today and looks like my passenger side FWD has the "stops short" problem about 30% of the time. (didn't notice at the SC - in retrospect it did it once there, but at the time I thought it was two of us hitting buttons at the same time)
I can try a FWD re-calibration on my own and am expecting a callback from Tesla service, but should I assume this will take an appointment at the SC to fix?
Jul 23, 2016
Muzzman1 Until today, the FWD calibration would remedy the doors from detecting an obstacle upon closing. Today, it did not resolve it, until I did the calibration 4 times in a row.
Since then 10/10 the door closes, while previous to the repeated calibrations, it would not close more than 1/10.
Hope it's squashed for a while!
Jul 23, 2016
SSD420 Embarrassing moment at the Barrie, ON supercharger earlier. Was showing off my MX FWD to the 2-3 MS owners. Went to close the doors and leave but NEITHER FWD would close. It sensed obstacles on both sides! Argh. I suspect it's own shadows causing this malfunction.
I was able to override the warning from inside the car.
Jul 23, 2016
ModelX I had the same problem yesterday! Frustrating when you are showing the doors off to have such a problem!
Jul 23, 2016
SSD420 It's so embarrassing.
Jul 26, 2016
Pjjava34 I dropped off my X two weeks ago to have both wings looked at as the driver side detects a phantom obstacle roughly 40% of the time while the passenger side detects it 20% or so of the time. They tested the doors saying it operated normally (not sure how many tests they ran, but I was shocked to hear they said this as the problems are constant, daily and several times a day). They returned the car recently stating that almost all logs showed it was related to inductive sensors being triggered. They had removed the covers on the wing panels and verified that the sensors were affixed properly and functioning as they should.
They told me to document conditions, locations, weather, time, date, button used to close doors ect, the next time it happens so that engineers can analyze further.
After having the car back for 4 days now the frequency for the phantom objects on both doors upon closing has remained identical. Today, I had 6 consecutive failures when trying to close one of the doors. Meaning, we drive somewhere, get out of the car and try to close the door, it stops short and I override closed. We go into store, come out and get in, try to close the door and it stops short. Go elsewhere, get out and try to close door, ect ect on 6th consecutive occasions! I called the service center right before they closed and expressed my frustration and stated that I had logged all info they requested since last taking possession of the car.
They are having someone come to my house in the AM with an S to take the X back in. They told me the S had far more issues in its early days as compared to the X now. Yes the issues were different but they were plentiful and the S as he called it is "bullet proof" today. The service adviser also said they have certain protocol to follow per Tesla before switching out sensors and mechanisms and so on but perhaps this recent bout with more door closure failures on both sides will push me into getting new hardware installed on the doors. I want to love them, I have kids in car seats on both side of the doors and utilize them for their intended purpose on a daily basis but they need to work more frequently. I wait around now after clicking to close the door because I know odds are one of them will stop short! The service center has been amazing and accommodating here in the Atlanta area and never made me feel like a whack job for constantly calling in with new issues to report. I'm vin 49xx with an April build, mid May delivery (Elon sleeping bag days).
Jul 28, 2016
SSD420 Keep me informed about this. I am having the exact issue. 90% of time my door sense a phantom obstacle. It's more than frustrating. It's embarassing! I happens 100% of the time when I'm showing off my car.
I have an appointment next month for the FWDs as well as some other semi-minor issues I've reported. Although, I'm told I will get a call tomorrow, and maybe get my appointment bumped earlier as yesterday I called in and reported some issues with Autopilot. .
Jul 28, 2016
Pjjava34
Will do. I go through the same embarrassment scenario and cringe when friends want to see the doors in action as I know odds are it'll fail me. I've talked with other X owners who've had their cars for months without ever having this issue. Beats me.
Jul 28, 2016
SSD420 My issues only started semi-recently. The week after I took delivery, I was back at the SC for some minor issues and questions. I actually didn't know there was an issue with my FWDs. I thought they were perfect. I asked the SC manager how i get the doors to open straight up before spanning outwards. Like, when you're next to a parked car. My doors just wouldn't open much. On that day they told me that they needed to fix my calibration and that there was a doors update. I waited 45 min while they did this update and was on my way. Now, since that update, my FWD fail 90% of the time! they failed maybe 1-2% before I went to SC.
Jul 28, 2016
tropical1 Just a note, we had this happen a couple times with our X and what we noted is if our kids setting in back seat were too close to the doors (arms / legs) when they were closing it would detect them and stop. Ever since they have moved a little bit away from the door when it is closing it hasn't had any problems. We also close the front doors before the FWD.
Jul 28, 2016
Infinite My X detects phantom obstacles in my garage and doesn't open fully even though there is more than 12" clearance even in a fully open scenario. I did the override from control panel only about a 100 times now. Every time it says Full open is set for this location but wouldn't open the doors next time. Sometimes it opens so low that it is practically impossible to get in the car, when I close it and open it again it may or may not open to a umbrella mode. Very frustrating as I had spent the money to raise the garage door up to facilitate the FWDs to open fully so that I can put the kids in the car seat easily. The guy at the SC was not helpful at all and kept repeating that he had no control over engineering and the only thing for to do is go post the issue in the tesla forum and they may look at it

Electric700 You could try calling them, and leave a voicemail if no one answers. Another option is to contact Tesla at [emailprotected].
Jul 28, 2016
Oloron FYI - picking up my X from the SC today. The FWD stopping short is a known issue and, at least in some cases, is due to a wire for a sensor sliding down in front of the sensor inside the door. (i.e. The door starts to go down, the wire shifts slightly due to the change in angle and movement making it block the sensor. The sensor now detects an "obstacle" where there is none.) This also explains why it's intermittent. Sometimes the wire moves away entirely and all is fine, sometimes it spends more time in front of the sensor and the door doesn't want to close.
For those who have this problem, the fix is quick and takes no new parts. They just have to open up the door, (re-)route the wire properly, and make sure to tie it down so that it can't shift to block the sensor.
Jul 28, 2016
systemcrashed Even though there may be more than 12" of space after you parked the sensors may have detected an obstacle closer than that as you were entering the garage, overhead obstacles included. Part of the way the new firmware works is that it "remembers" these signals just before parking and opening. The way I realized this is happening is that when my MX did this I had placed a box near the entrance of my garage, the sensors picked this up as I was pulling in, even though I cleared the box and it was not in the door's way, I still had a partially opened fwd.
Jul 29, 2016
Pjjava34 Service Center called me today to say that my wing issues are fixed and it's ready for pick up! Just 24 hours after dropping it off I'm a bit skeptical but they went on to tell me they had about 80 X owners call with wing issues in recent weeks and it was a firmware fix which "Tesla has been working feverishly on in the past few days to put out." They also said my non responsive seatback buttons on the 2nd seats are also fixed and were a firmware issue as well.
I'll pick up the car in tech AM and will see for myself I guess.
Jul 29, 2016
joebob73 I got my X back from the service center to address FWD closing issues. The wire was rerouted as well. I am not sure why the issue started (timed with the recent firmware update), but this seemed to have fixed it.
Jul 30, 2016
halg
Let me know if the issue is fixed. My driver side FWD has the same issue, if your are fixed I will call them up and get mine fixed.
Jul 30, 2016
Pjjava34 About 20 or so openings and closings today after picking up the car and no failiures yet. This would have never happened before as you would almost certainly get 3-4 stops in their but fingers crossed its working!
Jul 31, 2016
SSD420 That's good news. It's horribly embarrassing when showing off the car and cringing every time. I do have a bunch of other issues too, so don't know if 24 hours will be enough time for mine.
Jul 31, 2016
halg Awesome news, will give SC a call, thanks for sharing!
Jul 31, 2016
Pjjava34 I was told the "pinch sensors" were extremely sensitive along the edges of the door but a new firmware was installed to reduce sensitivity yet keeping them safe from little fingers.
Jul 31, 2016
halg Can the firmware be updated over the air?
Jul 31, 2016
Pjjava34 They weren't clear on if this was something we could do at home or they had to do at the SC. I didn't think to ask at the time.
Jul 31, 2016
halg Ok thank! It's very helpful.
Aug 1, 2016
tropical1 If anyone takes the X to the service centers and determines if the firmware can be OTA please post. I have only had the problem a couple of times but would like to get the updated firmware.
Thanks!
Aug 19, 2016
Pjjava34 Anyone still have frequent bouts with the FWD stopping short? A supposed firmware upgrade (per the service center) was to fix the issue and after getting the X in about 3 weeks ago it seemed to have been resolved. Over the past 10 or so days though it has gradually started again, stopping shortly before it shuts at a rate of about 3 times a day. It is usually on the same door for me. Though the other FWD stops short from time to time as well.
Aug 19, 2016
ohmman I had this issue early on, then it seemed to resolve (coincidentally?) after I did a full detail of the car. In the last week, it has come back on both doors pretty regularly. My X goes in on Monday for a huge punch list (25 items) so I'm hoping they'll sort something out with this.
Aug 19, 2016
Pjjava34 I know I've thought about your cleaning of the door seals and sensor area and since posting my question a few minutes ago went down to the garage for another clean sweep of the edges. I also do waterless cleaning of the car pretty regularly myself but even 5 minutes ago after doing another full wipe down it still sensed an obstacle on closing. The false obstacle detection has haunted me from the get go and it never goes away to the point that I'd rather tesla peel off the wing sensors and I'll take liability as long as the damn door just closes!
Please post what service makes up about the wings functioning normally.
Aug 20, 2016
systemcrashed Prior to latest firmware update this only happened twice. After this latest update it is happening one in three times. Tech support suggested I run a calibration exercise, I did it twice but it is still happening at about the same frequency. I'm taking it in for hopefully the last few cosmetic issues next week, this has been added to the list unfortunately.
Aug 20, 2016
Sean So Lowe Ok so far no problems with the FW doors but whenever they stop short because they detect something and I want them to open all the way what can I do? There is still clearance for them to open they are just over protective I guess you could say. Whenever I hit the fob or door button it just shuts the door. I want it to continue to open all the way up. Any suggestions?
Aug 20, 2016
F123456 To open them further, check the 17" display. You should see a screen that indicates the doors can be opened further by pressing and holding open on that display (not buy using the key fob or physical door buttons). Once opened fully, you can choose to set Always open fully at this location.
Aug 20, 2016
systemcrashed Just a note, my doors have started stopping short of closing when nothing is nearby, when an obstacle is beside or above it functions as it should when opening.
Aug 20, 2016
F123456 The good news is that not only is this a known issue now, there's also a known fix. There's a wire at the top of the door which is often not routed/secured properly. When they FWD closes, that wire sometimes ends up lying across the sensor, causing there obstacle detected issue and preventing there for from closing completely. The SC should be able to check all sensors and secure that wire.
Aug 20, 2016
ohmman You can also pull and hold the door open ring if you're in the back. As soon as you let go, they'll stop.
Aug 20, 2016
SSD420 My MX is currently at the SC for this among a list of other minor issues. They've had it since Tuesday morning. Supposedly they've fixed it and are just waiting on an unrelated part. I'll let you know what happens when I get it back.
I was having the phantom obstacle detected about 75% of the time and 100% of the time when I was showing it off (go figure!).
My Tesla app notified me that since Tuesday, Tesla has updated my software 4 or 5 times.
I want my MX back already, the loaner Model S they gave me feels so cramped. Although it's a P90DL !
Aug 20, 2016
Pjjava34 I feel you. I was showing it to some family for the first time 30 min ago and the fwd which typically doesn't fail me started failing me (twice) in the 30 min I was showing them the car.
I've dropped it off twice for the phantom obstacles and they've told me it's been fixed and surprisingly it does for a few days (which would never happen ) then it slowly starts in frequency and increases again with more and more stops.
I'll be looking forward to your post when you receive the car!
Aug 21, 2016
SSD420
I'll most likely post on this thread: MX going to SC, after 1 month
When I get my car back. Look out for my response. I'm eager to get my MX back. The MS loaner, although pretty cool with ludicrous, is too small for me. It's just not comfortable as my Model X.
Aug 22, 2016
Kewlly I picked up my Model X (VIN 4xxx) in NY a month ago. The FWDs started to experience false obstacle detection on the driver side 3 days after pickup (they worked fine for the first 2 days). I called Tesla and they picked up the car a week later, took it to the SC, were able to replicate the problem and documented that they had performed a hard reset of the pinch protection sensor and firmware, and were able to correct the issue. I get the car back a day later, and the problem went away for a week. This past weekend, the exact same problem resurfaced, and I called Tesla service today and were told it had been determined it was a firmware issue and that I had to just sit tight and wait for a firmwide update in a few weeks. At no point during the earlier SC appointment or my most recent call to service did they mention this issue with the loose wire, so I'm debating if I should call the SC (Red Hook) again and insist that they take the car back in or just wait for a firmware update.
Aug 22, 2016
efusco My wife's MX is at service now and I just got an email update regarding this problem. Here's the exact wording used in the update email:
"Falcon door trims have been removed and wiring re-secured. We also updated the firmware on the vehicle and so far they have been perfect."
They had implied, prior to the car going up, that they would have to physically replace the sensors. This suggests it's more a wiring and Firmware issue.
Aug 22, 2016
F123456 Mine also appeared to be a wiring and firmware issue. Everything has been working consistently since my "repair."
Aug 22, 2016
Roentgen Yep, have this problem now too, driver's side FWD. I do feel like it's been worse since the last update. Sadly, we had been yelling at our 5 yo for awhile because we thought he was reaching for or grabbing the door as it was coming down. Now we know it's the car's fault...
Aug 22, 2016
systemcrashed I'm going to report the same experience here, I have since asked my 6yr old to buckle up and sit in his seat before activating the B-pillar switch to close the fwd. it has not happened since.
Aug 23, 2016
Softwizard I am a bit late adding to this thread, but I didn't have any problems for the first 90 days of my MX (VIN 40xx delivered 04/18), then I experienced the "FWD won't go down 80% of the time and 100% of the time when showing off" LOL
The Dallas SC took my car for a week and said it is a sensor issue. They are currently waiting for "Revision E" sensors and trim. It is two weeks out for those.
Aug 23, 2016
Milin1609 I have experience the same in my ownership of 5 weeks. FWD would stop without any apparent reason and error pops up about an obstacle found. With second try, it would close. Happens 50% of the time. Taking to SC on 26th. Hopefully, they will fix it.
Aug 23, 2016
tropical1 SC fixed ours, was happening every once and awhile. Doesn't happen at all now. I believe our was related to the wire issue.
Aug 24, 2016
SSD420 Mine is currently at the SC primarily for this issue. They claim it's been fixed now. I'll find out as soon as I get it back
Aug 24, 2016

Aug 24, 2016
systemcrashed How often was it happening for you before the update?
Aug 24, 2016
WayneMa It happens at least 60% of the time. I have tested after the update, ten for ten perfect! Lets hope it stay that way.
Aug 25, 2016
