Double - DIN Upgrade Tesla Motors

Does anyone know if this is the Alpine, or a new head unit?
  • Oct 3, 2012
    dsm363
Pricey too. From the picture that looks like the Alpine unit included in the 2.5 tech package.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    nikwest
If it is the Alpine unit I would not recommend it to anybody. Not for half the price.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    Doug_G
Yeah, I can't really see spending $4,800 to upgrade from a sucky JVC single-DIN to a sucky Alpine double-DIN. Too bad.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    AnOutsider
Would the general double din upgrade mean you can then slot a better unit in there? Maybe you can get the parts for the dash change and buy your own nav unit.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    dsm363
If that's possible, that's what I'd do. Maybe they'll sell you the double din upgrade without the Alpine unit (which really sucks) for less and let you choose something else. Alpine does have a newer unit with Pandora on it but likely the same thing as the old one in terms of user-interface.
  • Oct 3, 2012

You would have to pay me to take another Alpine unit.

To replace my stock Blaujunk radio this is exactly what I have been waiting for.

    Only better.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    wiztecy
I'm still happy with my Blaupunk :) ...although disappointed that bluetooth is only for phone calls and not audio streams like Pandora. WTF? Who puts such a limited feature in like that. Looking to see if I can put an amp into the Roadster to get more response from the speakers. Haven't heard back from Tesla if I can do that on the 1.5 or not. I like a simple head unit and use my phone for navigation and pandora /mp3 streaming. That way I keep my upgrade path inexpensive.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    dsm363
How can a company put out a $1,200 product that is at the top of the price range in its category that sucks so bad? Tesla should somehow scale down their nav from the Model S to a 7" screen for the Roadster. Not sure if that is possible.
  • Oct 3, 2012
    vfx
    This is a cool idea.

    Will it open my top?
  • Oct 3, 2012
    dsm363
Maybe but only once. A few well placed charges could blow the top off in a second.
  • Oct 3, 2012

I have seen a Double Din app radio, that basically displays your Iphone Apps on the radio display. The radio allows for swiping, pinching, zooming etc. It was pretty inexpensive (<$400). I can't seem to find it now!
  • Oct 3, 2012
    Doug_G
Well, in a way that's better than the JVC, which pretends that it can stream audio. It skips and jumps so much that it's intolerable to listen to. And it also intercepts your telephone calls so that you can't hear them, and they can't hear you.
  • Oct 4, 2012
    Andrew Wolfe
Turns out the $4800 is just parts. Closer to $7K installed.

I'm still trying to get the details about what is included.
  • Oct 4, 2012
    dsm363
Hmm. I'm not sure that is worth it. That $400 iPhone solution that someone posted in a different Roadster thread would work maybe.
  • Oct 4, 2012
    AnOutsider
Ouch but might be worth it if you want the dash to look "right"

Was told that it's the latest model unit.

Wow. I think it's great that they're offering upgrades, but Wow.

I think my solution is better: turn off the radio and ignore the oft-incorrect GPS. If I really need to navigate then I bring a Garmin.

You're right. Couldn't tell at first if the bezel was thinner and they crammed a larger screen in there but looks the same.
  • Oct 4, 2012
    Andrew Wolfe
That first unit is larger than Double DIN. There are two - A 7" upgrade of the one in the 2.5 and a 6" model that has the DVD slot above instead of behind the display. I'm trying to find out which one will be installed.

Did the original 2.5 Alpine package include a subwoofer and a standalone amp? Did the door tweeters come with that package as well? Were the other speakers the same Blaupunkt units I have or something different?
  • Oct 4, 2012
    PRJIM
The original 2.5 Alpine package came with a standalone Rockford Fosgate amp- this is the same amp that was included in the 1.5 and 2.0 Roadsters. Tesla Service has been adding Alpine part no: KTP-445 (Power Pack) to all Roadsters with the Alpine package.

    From Tesla:

The Alpine unit is the same as the 2.5 roadsters IVA-NAV-10. It includes all antennas required to support the satellite radio and HD radio.

This upgrade does not include an external amp or sub. If your roadster is already equipped with an amp, we will tap into the existing amp. A sub is also not included. To have the original sub installed requires the battery pack to be removed to access the driver rear quarter panel, where the original sub is located.

Its amazing how the thread veered off into discussion of the main unit, Alpine. The hard part is moving everything, the easy part is deciding on what brand you want... oh, unless you go to Tesla's late-to-the-party, one size-fits-all approach! Yes, mine is a 3 year old Alpine unit, but Elie can put in virtually any brand you want. He's probably worked on more Teslas (including now the Model S) than all other after marketers combined!
    http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/2399-Customized-Roadsters/page4?p=40337&viewfull=1#post40337
Some of the old timers will remember when Elon sat in my car at the Model S unveiling and and looked at Franz and asked why Tesla had not made a double DIN and moved the air vents to the top instead of the front of the dash? They did not structurally think it could be done. Then Franz visited Al & Ed's corporate HQ, and after that the 2.5 interior was born! I still think the AE edition double DIN looks better than Tesla 2.5, but I realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
  • Oct 6, 2012

Thanks for the info - I'll probably both repaint and get the interior upgraded after receiving my Model X. And it will be Al & Ed's that I talk to.

If you want to take a 'fresh' look at your Roadster for less money, think of a wrap instead of a paint job. Hundreds instead of thousands and you can do it more on a whim.
  • Oct 7, 2012
    jbini1
I was gonna paint mine white. I've painted every car I've owned since most cars don't come white. But for a tesla idk if its worth it. The paint will never be as hard as factory, and could lower the value. Better off getting factory replacements if you can. I doubt the whole car is toast.
  • Oct 7, 2012
    7racer
since Tesla can make the screen in the Model S, wouldn't it be nice if they made a version for the Roadster?!?
  • Oct 7, 2012
    jory
my understanding was that the roadster paint was intentionally not hard but rather relatively soft in order to accommodate the flex of the CF body panels.
  • Oct 7, 2012
    bonnie
    What car is 'toast'?

Yep, it is a soft paint. There are also a few shops that have successfully repainted a number of Roadsters & understand the issues (including heat). I'm not planning on a major change, just refreshing it. Still will be white, maybe pearlized. I'm not going to really think about it until my X is in the driveway.
  • Oct 8, 2012
    W.Petefish
Exactly. (and it can be changed on a whim.)
  • Oct 8, 2012
    Andrew Wolfe
I'm not sure it is "hundreds" though. Mine was wrapped by the previous owner and I've been told it was $3500. Others have confirmed that this is what a professional, full wrap goes for.

Correct; depends on the extent of the wrap and who you go to to get the special "Tesla Hook-Up!"

Proving my point in my previous post that the name of the unit is the easy thing to swap... unless of course you go with the one-sized fits-all Tesla dealer retrofit

If y'all removed all of the old alpine equipment and put in the new pioneer equipment, you've just gained 100W of power. (the pioneer uses way less power, at least by the fuse ratings.)
  • Oct 9, 2012
    dsm363
I'm waiting for a system that is lightyears ahead of everything else in terms of user-interface and features before bother to replace the crappy Alpine. The Pioneer does looks nice though.
  • Oct 9, 2012
    7racer
W.Petefish, is that what you have in your car?
  • Oct 9, 2012
    W.Petefish
That is the exact model that I have.

Other items that need to be installed for full functionality:
    Alpine Camera interface
    sirius connect interface

If you remove the parrot bluetooth module, you gain 105W alone. (again, based on fuses.)

    Fuse based max power consumption:
Alpine Equipment - ~284.2W (discounting the Rockford Amp)
Pioneer Equipment - ~175.3W (again, discounting the Rockford Amp)

No, I don't, but that is because I prefer my handheld/Android. I have never really tried to use the Pioneer nav feature.
  • Oct 10, 2012

Pioneer isn't the best for NAV but is for sound quality.

I have this Pioneer unit in my car - Pioneer AVH-P6300BT DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com

It has Ipod connectivity so you can use it for NAV and it displays on the screen (ie Waze), and I have front/rear cameras hooked up to it as well. I never got the NAV add-on because I use my iphone anyway.

i saw a car getting its double din upgrade at menlo park this week. the owner had opted to install a different head unit than the standard one. i asked how they handled that and the service manager said they just deduct the cost of the head unit. he mentioned they prefer the same brand of head unit for accessory compatibility but it did not sound like a requirement. i took some photos of the install, but they are on my other computer which is having some issues. i'll try to add them to this post at a later date.

From what little I've read, the Alpine unit in Roadster has non-standard connectors for things like the backup camera. Alpine has a new unit out, and I've briefly flirted with the idea of replacing mine with the new one. However, I haven't heard if the new unit fixes the things I hate about my current unit:

    1) Can't use iPhone via cable if bluetooth is on. Have to plug, unplug, replug the phone every time.
    2) Volume controls don't work for several seconds when the unit powers on.
    3) Phone control works when your first program it, then it doesn't.

Then there's a bunch of UI things (3 pages for the soft buttons, etc.) that I know Alpine won't fix, but if the above are fixed I would consider an upgrade.

Could have been mine. (or maybe not - there are 2 custom installs underway)

Both are newer Alpine units - so pretty familiar to Tesla. Mine is the INE-S920HD while the other one is the INA-W910. I'll let everyone know how it turns out soon.
  • Nov 5, 2012
    dsm363
Hadn't heard of the INE-S920HD before. Actually sounds decent from the few reviews I saw.

Have you gotten your tesla back with the INE-S920HD? Review please?
  • Nov 20, 2012
    djp
From the Alpine website it looks like the INE-S920HD and INE-Z928HD have the new software, while the INA-W910 is on an older version. The 920 has physical knobs & buttons and a 6.1" screen. The 928 looks similar but with no physical controls and a 8" screen, which unfortunately is a wasted opportunity since the resolution is the same as the 920 (800x480).

The INE-S920HD looks like the best option by the specs. Love to see a review.

Can anyone who has swapped out the head unit confirm how Tesla handled it? Were they happy to put in whatever unit the owner wanted?

That Parrot Asteroid 2U looks like a really nice base for some EV-specific extensions.

Yes. I'll do a review with pictures next week - but mini-review: It turned out excellent.

The INE-Z928HD is really a special form factor for pickup trucks and full-size SUVs.

No full review yet - but here are some photos.

I am very happy with the sound - due mostly to new Focal speakers.

As far as UI - it is not bad. I still don't have the phone UI fully working but calls come in. Pandora works over BT with a full UI. Ipod works fine but I'm not yet sure if power is maintained when the car is off or if the iPod is powered down when you turn off the car. Have not tried a CD or DVD.

I had the base Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57. No amp, sub, or door speakers. Mine is a 1.5 with no electronics package.

    Now added:

    Alpine INE-S920HD
    Alpine KTP-445U "Power Pack
    Rearview camera (from Tesla)
Focal Performance PC 100 4 speakers front and back.
Focal KIT TNI 1.5 door tweeters
    Double-Din dash mod.

Alpine unit included a bluetooth mike and a USB cable which I added an iPod adapter to.

The Focal IC130/PC130 are 130mm speakers. The old ones were 100mm - so that's what I kept. Has anyone installed larger speakers?

Andrew inspired me to do the same with my Roadster. I had been thinking of doing the carbon fibre upgrade for a while to dress up the interior, so when I saw an option for a double DIN upgrade with improved Alpine I decided to pull the trigger. I picked up the car from the Toronto Service Centre this afternoon. The final result was impressive - it was like getting a new car. Eli, Lisa & team did a fantastic job. And as an unexpected side benefit all the interior squeaks and rattles are gone!

Parrot Smart is now available, so time to work out how to install it...

First problem is backup camera. Anyone know of an adaptor for the existing Alpine camera to standard RCA video?

  • Apr 16, 2013

    Waiting for delivery. Hopefully Friday.

Then, it goes on my bench and I'm gonna triple check every feature - make sure it does everything I need. Music, Bluetooth, apps should be fine - but a little worried about Hong Kong nav (although it has waze and google maps). People have side loaded tomtom (which would be fine), but for some bizarre reason Android tomtom doesn't list HK maps (while iOS does). I've been using waze this week, and it is surprisingly good.

Last thing to work out is reversing camera. I suspect I'll need to pull a new one as the Alpine has a very wired non-standard connector/signal.

I'm also planning on moving the iPhone up to the windscreen area.
